Business North - The Daily Briefing - Business Newspaper Online Bill moves forward to help small businesses save money ...

ST. PAUL - A bill (HF 3721) authored by State Representative Denise Dittrich (DFL - Champlin/Coon Rapids) would require health insurance companies operating in the small business sector to make employers aware of low-cost health care coverage plans available for their workers. Dittrich's bill has been moving quickly through the committee process this session. It passed on a unanimous voice vote in the House Commerce and Labor Committee.

"By passing this bill, we can make small employers aware of more affordable health care coverage options available for their employees," said Rep. Dittrich. "In doing so, we can help save small businesses money while ensuring that those who are eligible for health insurance, receive it."

The rising cost of health insurance has taken a toll on small businesses throughout Minnesota. more

Business Briefing

The Treasury Department deals in millions and billions and even trillions of dollars, but it can think small, too. Officials announced Friday that starting next month, individuals will be able to buy Treasury securities in amounts as small as $100, down from the current minimum of $1,000.

The change will take effect for the weekly auction of three-month and six-month Treasury bills that will be held on April 7. Treasury Department officials said the hope is the reduction will attract smaller investors.

Vijaya Bank on track with business target

MANGALORE: Vijaya Bank is on track to meet its expected business target of Rs. 100,000 crore by 2010 and may end up achieving it a year earlier, according to Chairman and Managing Director, Prakash P. Mallya. The bank as on Friday had achieved a total business of Rs. 78,600 crores, Mr. Mallya said and added, "It is my gut feeling that the bank will breach the Rs. 100,000 crore business target by March 2009."

Addressing media persons after inaugurating the bank's 1,047th branch at Bajpe, near here, on Saturday, Mr. Mallya said he was quite satisfied with the growth achieved by the bank. Bank's deposits have shown an increase of 25 per cent and advances 26 per cent. The bank started its deposit mobilisation drive early in December and this has yielded results.

"We will open our 1,051st branch at Sunkadakatte in Bangalore on Monday," he said. more

House passes business tax bill

BOISE -- An industry-driven bill that could afford Idaho businesses an eventual $120 million tax break gained House passage here Friday. The piece of legislation that seeks to phase out during a five-year span Idaho's personal property tax on business equipment escaped the House on a 39-31 vote.House Bill 599 now goes to the 35-member Senate, where the measure boasts a dozen co-sponsors, including four of the nine members of the Senate Local Government and Taxation Committee.Thirty-two members of the 105-member Idaho Legislature are listed as co-sponsors of HB 599, which has been promoted strongly by Idaho's most powerful business lobby -- the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry.IACI has estimated the recommended bill would cost the state $110 to $120 million during the five-year phase-out that could start next year if certain economic conditions are met. more

Voting Question: Will This Be A Safe Way To Do A File Transfer? How Do I Restore My IE and Firefox Favorites?

So awhile ago, I was writing about some terrible virus that was killing my computer. I was fairly certain I got rid of it. To be safe, I attempted doing a back up, but it kept failing. And finally, my computer totally crashed. There's no OS on my slave drive, so I can't boot from that, and other hard drives don't work because they're not fit for that computer (I already tried that route). I was told that because I can access the boot menu and whatever was a good sign that my hard drive is still good- the system files are just corrupted. I need to get all of the files off of the crashed master drive. I was going to have someone set it up for me so that I can do the file transfer (as there's too much stuff in too many folders, and I don't want a reinfection, ya know?) Anyway, this dude is apparently too busy, but he's the only one I could afford and that would let me do the file transfer after setting it up. So I ordered a USB to SATA/IDE data transfer cables, and a 1TB Western Digital My Book Essential (the newest model). I have access to my parents computer, so I figured I just could plug everything and spend a day transferring the files I want, then do a system recovery and be back in business. My only questions are- is that a safe method? I'm pretty sure the guy I had spoken to said that Data Transfer Cables hold some risk of failure or something- which is why I wanted him to do it in the first place. But that has me wondering- how the hell else would he or anyone be able to "plug in" my drive to their computers? He does on-site service, so I don't see how he could install my HD onto his laptop. I mean, is installing the hard drive directly into the computer safer/better in general? Because I could do that, I guess. Plugging in some cables seems like less hassle than opening up a computer though, ya know? But if it's safer than by all means, I will. Help is apprecieated! Also, how would I get back my Internet Explorer and Firefox favorites? I asked the guy if he'd be able to restore those and he said yes, but didn't elaborate, and since I'm doing this myself, how would I? Thanks again!! more

Resolved Question: How do i fix this tech. problem affecting Internet Explorer 8 (Using Vista) due to Data Execution Prevention?

Prior to doing a System Recovery on my lap top this evening (that originally had IE 7 factory installed by the manufacturer) in the past month or two, I downloaded and installed the full version of IE 8, however I've had this problem before where I installed IE 8, and due to Data Execution Prevention, when I opened the web browser window, it would close/quit seconds later. At that time, a technician over the phone showed me how to fix/rectify the problem, and this time around I only have Data Execution Prevention set to essential not all things (Control Panel on Vista (all, not classic view) > System and Maintenance > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention - which is currently set to "Turn DEP on for essential Windows programs and services only" Not: "Turn DEP on for all programs and services except those I select" I had it set to "essentials" prior to the system recovery I conducted/did earlier this evening, and IE 8 opened, ran, and functioned ok. Microsoft is closed for phone support until business hours during the week, which is why I'm asking on here. My ISP can't help with this query, as it's to do with a Microsoft product/software. Could it be the Add Ons settings that need to be adjusted/changed in the Internet Options of IE 8? more

Voting Question: My computer refuses to let me log in for any longer than it takes to log me back out. Help?

I recently had the misfortune to download a number of viruses. They seemed harmless enough for me to put off dealing with them, so I did. Then they started to hijack my Internet connection, so I restored my system a few times and that fixed the problem temporarily. Then I started getting warnings that some system files had gone missing. I hadn't deleted any, and so I figured that either they had been deleted (deemed unlikely, since the computer was running well enough) or that one of the viruses had triggered the message. I decided that I'd had enough of this virus business so I tried to eradicate it. I started by sending SpybotSD and HijackThis after the suspicious processes and programs. They found things, but they didn't seem to solve the problem. Then I downloaded a trial version of an Internet Security Whatchamacallit from Trendmicro.com. It had me uninstall the four-years-out-of-date McAfee anti-virus software and Spybot SD, on the grounds that it offered both of those services and that there would be conflicts otherwise. Around this time I placed the Windows XP Home Recovery CD that came with my computer into the disk drive, but did not run it. Installation went well. I rebooted and scanned, and the program couldn't find anything. I had it scan again, and it found something suspicious and I had it fix the problem. Something came up that necessitated another reboot (I believe that I had updated the anti-virus package and it wanted to reset). When I turned the computer back on, I ran into a Windows XP Professional-type login window (minus the ctrl-alt-del requirement) asking for a password to the account called "main," what the system calls the account that I use. I gave it my password, it logged me in, brought me to the desktop, and then logged me back out. Same thing when I tried my username; other name/password combos fail to do even that. Removing the recovery disk didn't help, nor did rebooting, and even Safe Mode locks me out. Using an Ubuntu Live CD I was able to check up on my data- it's all still there and intact (maybe not the system files, I dunno). Any ideas? Suggestions? Words of consolation? more

Resolved Question: Is this data recovery company legit?

www.drivefish.com I need to get the data recovered off of my crashed hard drive and I have been searching online for different services and companies that specialize in recovery. The price for a single hard drive recovery -- no matter the amount of data -- seems pretty ridiculous, on the order of $1200-1500 (from 3 different sources). I came across a link to DriveFish.com on one of the forums that I was browsing through which offers $199 flat fee for recovery. This seems too good to be true and before sending my drive with all of my personal data and information I want to determine if it's legit or a complete scam. I checked the Better Business Buraeu website and couldn't determine that they were listed. Please provide a method or link to a resource to determine if this company exists and is not a hoax. I plan to file a small claims suit against Fields Data Recovery for breach of contract. By the way, don't use them, EVER. I can say that they have the worst customer service that I've ever encountered. Last year, I entered into a verbal service agreement with them to recover data from my hard drive (which died). I specified, before agreeing to do business with them, that I needed the data by a certain date. They gave me a complete assurance that it would be done, and also guaranteed other things, such as emailing me specific documents a week before the specified date. I am really kicking myself in the head for not getting everything that was discussed in writing, especially since I am an attorney! There was then a lot of delays caused solely by their ineptness: First, they didn't 'recognize' my package and so it sat at their office for 3-4 days. They claimed that it would be worked on as soon as they received it. Second, once they started work, it took them anadditional 3 days, over what was promised, to finish. Third, during this time, the main customer rep/technician that I had dealt with, who had promised to be my liason and email me the specific documents discussed earlier, took a week-long vacation. He failed to inform me of this during our conversation two weeks before, when he promised that he would be available and would get the documents to me. No one from their office returned any of my calls during this week when I was desperately trying to get a hold of someone there about the data that I needed. Fourth, Fields Data Recovery then sends my recovered data to the WRONG ADDRESS. They don't bother to check with me as to where it will be shipped, but instead ship it to my credit card's address (which was completely different from the address I had given them - it was also located in a different state). TIme was starting to run out for me. Fifth, they failed to make the deadline that we had agreed to. At that point, desperate for the documents that I needed, I contacted them and explained that I REALLY needed those documents. One of the other technicians took it upon himself to immediately assist me. However, the documents that he emailed me did not contain any of the documents that I needed; in fact, he sent me some documents that I am 100% sure are NOT mine. Sixth, the deadline had passed. I suffered harm from the lack of the documents. I expressed my extreme disatisfaction with their business practices and services. In return, they agreed to reduce my payment from to half of what it was originally. I had paid them before I shipped my package to them. After this conversation in which they agreed to reduce my original charges, I waited for six weeks. No changes showed up on my credit card, nor did I receive any check returning the amount which they agreed to refund. At this point, I was very tired with dealing with these guys. I called the credit card company, and theytold me that they would have their internal dispute resolution department contact Fields and handle it, but that I should send back the CDs which they sent me (to the wrong address) as a show of good faith. I did so. Later, the credit card company tells me that they "can't" do anything because Fields Data Recovery is an "international" company. In response, I write a letter to them showing that Fields Data Recovery, USA, has extensive US operations, is a subsidiary of Fields Data Recovery International, and is incorporated in the US. I then get a response from the credit card company telling me that I should have sent my letter to them within a month of the events in the dispute. However, I sent my letter to them within two weeks of receiving their letter. It is clear to me that the credit card company doesn't give a damn. So, now I'm out over $1000 with absolutely nothing to show for it. I have a few emails from Fields representatives to me concerning the work, butthe emails don't say anything specific at all - just that "we promise we are working very hard on your hard drive, sorry for the delay, etc." However, I did confirm that the company does keep records for every client and that my record noted that there were substantial delays in my case. However, I don't know if it specifies the terms which were discussed for the contract. I plan to subpeona these records. I don't have any further evidence besides whatever documents I can get my hands on, including their emails, my emails, and their records, and my own testimony. Basically, my questions are: 1. Do you have any suggestions in terms of evidence that I could use against them? 2. Would it be any use at all to complain to the Better Business Bureau about this company? Any other non-legal suggestions to warn others? 3. Should I include the credit card company as a defendant? 4. Do you think that Fields has any defenses? As a young lawyer, I believe that I will be able to prove my case, if the judge believes my story. Any advice that you all have would be very much appreciated. Thanks to those who have already responded.EDIT: Some details which I forgot to mention: 1. After my credit card company refused to do anything, I called Fields to ask them about the refund and requested that they return the CDs that I had shipped to them. I contacted them three times about this. They never got back to me. It has been over 8 months already. 2. When I file suit, I am going to either ask for the entirety of my payment back, plus compensatory damages, or the refund and the CDs, plus compensatory damages. more

Resolved Question: Will a business license for a service also permit me to sell goods?

I run a data recovery business and clients are encouraged to provide their own blank media for me to put their recovered files onto. But if a client doesn't provide their own blank media, I'll buy it myself and add the extra cost to the client's total price. Naturally I want to make a profit from my investment in the blank media, whenever its needed. However, this isn't what I'm in business for. I already have a state tax identification number (Kentucky), a business license for the county I live in, and a DBA. In order to also sell blank media at a profit in the event its needed, do I need anything else such as a seller's permit / resale permit / wholesale license? Or am I good to go already? more

Resolved Question: Starting PC Repair Business. What are the best data recovery solutions for deleted files & Damaged Hard Drives

I am starting a PC Repair Business. I would like to offer data recovery for people who accidentally deleted files. I assume there is decent software out there for that. What is the best solution for this scenario? Also, I would like to offer the same for people with dead, or dying, hard drives. This would require a more "physical" approach. What is the best solution for this scenario? Please answer both questions. I am not sure how much money I want to sink into this... I guess it depends on the market for the service. For the first example, I would have no problem buying software (but freeware is nice too, if it works). For the second example, I will assume it is expensive, so just give me whatever you can. Top answer will go to whoever give me the most useful info (answers both questions, gives more than one solution to each example, gives me something I can actually use and works). Thank you!I am A+, Net+ and MCP Certified. I have worked in IT for about 2 years in a global network situation in which we sync all pc's to a server and perform a daily tape backup. So, my background in data restoration is limited due to this. I thank you, sincerely, for your concern, however, the level of data recovery I wish to perform is not covered in any of the materials of study for the A+ exam, nor any other exam I have passed to date. The "dying hard drive" scenario: I have never heard of the ziplock and freezer method, though I may try it someday for kicks. I have heard of "clean rooms" needing to be set up, along with special (and expensive) equipment, to disassemble the hard drives to retrieve data. If anyone knows anything about this, or anything close to this, please let me know. more
