Earthly Delights, longtime health food store in Schenectady

The last day of business for the store at 162 Jay St., is July 31, said Marcy Newman, a longtime employee.

"I think financially it's gotten too difficult for them to sustain," Newman said of the owners, Lori and Jennifer Sendra.

Located on the Jay Street pedestrian mall, the small store has creaky wooden floors, two compact aisles of health food products and fresh soup and sandwiches. It's a destination for many loyal customers.

Even with its homey touches, the store had been forced to compete with the growing selection of natural foods in supermarkets.

In an interview with The Business Review in December 2007, Lori Sendra said she had stopped buying Newman's Own brand cookies and salad dressings because she couldn't compete with the prices at Price Chopper and Hannaford. more

I'm a sole proprietor, I sell items through an online store, but I'm only an affiliate, I never see or obtain any goods as they are shipped from their warehouse to the customer. I also offer local computer repair services out of my home. In MN I know I didn't need a business license for the online bit, but I'm not sure for here in SC. Resolved Question: looking for a business name?

Hello. I live in minnesota (in the Mpls area) and I am starting a tech based business. The business will be a dual partnership between myself and a very good friend of mine whom together total 40 years of pc experience. We are looking to do pc repair, custom machines, gaming rigs, virus removal, remote connections...and so on. We don't want to limit our services by using a name that ties us to one specific area (IE: computers). I have been asking family, friends, strangers...just about everyone I meet if they have any ideas for a name. I'm open to any suggestions if anyone has a name that they don't mind sharing. Thank you much :) more

Resolved Question: How do I come up with an awesome logo?

Resolved Question: Does anyone know how I can make my google local results higher?

I have a business - brendons computer service. I fix computers. I do a great job of it for a great price. Better service and price than best buy for sure, or any of my competitors for that matter. I think I deserve to be on top. I'm on top local in yahoo. I was in google but now I'm now if you do a search for 'computer repair wilmington, de' in google I'm not in the top ten even I don't think. What can I do to raise myself back up? I think google's search engine goes by how many sites I'm linked to guestimate the importance of my website. I'm not 100% sure though. I have a very thorough ad through google listing with 'wilmington, de computer repair' scattered throughout the backend. Help me help others from getting ripped off by the big businesses. Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Can I run a small computer repair business at 16 years old?

I am 16 years old and I have been repairing computers out of my house now for about 2 years. Is it legal for me to put flyers out advertising my services and prices? Resolved Question: Reformatting computers as a service?

I am considering reformatting computers as a local service as a source of income. I know the legalities of it is sort of eh...so I'm wondering if I will get it trouble for it? These are the conditions under which I will work: I will provide the reformatting as an act of computer repair only. I am NOT selling copies of the OS, nor the disks. The customer understands that I will not provide a product key of any sort; it is their responsibility to obtain one, whether the original from the purchase of their computer, or by purchasing an OEM OS Install disk/key. Even so, I don't know if this is allowed? I'm only 21, don't have any background in business or law. Just trying to make more money now that I'm going back to school full-time and had to quit my full-time job. Thanks for your time. more

Resolved Question: How do you recover from the "Malware Defense" virus?

I was browsing for a game recently and my computer was bombarded by a computer protection scam. The windows and icons used by the creators of the scam were fairly convincing but the biased words they wrote in the interface gave it away. Several windows popped up and I..well I freaked. :/ I tried looking for, what my limited knowledge of viruses considers, suspicious processes and services in the task manager to stop them. This did not work. I found the suspicious processes, but the virus had disabled the "go to service" function of my task manager and many if not most service names are just jumbled characters to me. So that fell through. I then moved to old reliable - Malwarebytes. Turns out this virus is a real sweetheart and was designed to infect and integrate itself with REAL Windows files and processes. I didn't recognize these obscure Windows processes and the were taking up unusual amounts of my computer's resources so I went to their folder locations and deleted them..so naturally my system isn't at 100% now. :/ Later I found a site which had a tutorial for how to take care of this virus without manually deleting files. So I followed it and worked around the virus to use Malwarebytes. It worked, I scanned my comp., but now I need help finding out how to repair the damage I did. :/ I know I made a stupid move...but what's worse is that I haven't taken a backup - ever. My Lenovo R61i was acquired through a school program and I haven't had the money to buy an external hard drive or even the disks for back ups. I would prefer not to have to completely re-image my computer as the IT department tends to wipe almost everything from the HD (though I am thankful for the services offered ;) ). I know it's important, but I can't remember all the dlls and other files I deleted. I recall a "twunk_32"....but that's about it. :/ If anyone has any knowledge of the Windows files that are affected by this virus I'd would be appreciative of any sharing of this knowledge. System Specs: Lenovo R61i Windows Vista Business x32 Intel Pentium Dual 1.86 2038MB RAM 160-ish GB Hard drive Anti-Virus/General Computer Protection Software: Sophos AVG Free Edition Spybot:S&D Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Please email me if you have questions or wish to help. Resolved Question: I need a legal agreement to do in home computer repair.?

I'd like something that will, cover my ass, for a in home computer repair business. I'm a college student and I want to offer ""squad level services for about 1/3rd the price. However I don't have the pages of paperwork! I'm going via craigs list. I'd like to post it at the bottom of the posting and or have them sign it when I show up. Any ideas? I need a total not responsible for any property: intellectual, hardware, data, everything and anything. Something that would protect we if say their computer died while I was there, data got corrupted or they didn't understand me telling the it will erase everything 5 times before I did it. Or even the classic accusations of stole our data ( I have no interest in there data.) and asserting I can leave at any time if I feel uncomfortable. No reason given. Also the ability to reject people. I'm thinking 50 an hour for an in home service will be best.honestly I'll be lucky to make 350 in a year. I'm just doing this on the side till classes get hard.yeah 350 a year, then another 200 to make it legal a year.. Your over estimating the level of business I'm doing lol. more

The name of the Company is PC Pharm. Resolved Question: What is a good name for a computer repair shop?

I plan to open a computer repair business from my home next month. I am in the process of getting all the legal work completed (LLC registration, tax info., etc). So this is the story, I own a Dell Insperon (not sure of the model) and it recently broke down to such a level that it wont turn on, has a blue screen of death (BSOD), wont allow me to reload Windows Vista, or repair the computer, and has smoke coming out of it. Resolved Question: Is a computer repair business a good idea?

I have the proper education and funds to start my own computer repair/setup/consulting/etc... business. I realize that it will be extremely hard to compete with large established businesses (Best Buy), but I've done the math and I figured out that I can provide the same services as the big companies (Best Buy), for 1/3 the price of what they charge (on several services but obviously not all) and still make a good profit. Plus I can provide in home services, and I wont make you wait 2 weeks like some companies (Best Buy) do. Obviously I wont make my decision based solely on the answers I receive here, but I thought that I would see what some other people thought before I spend my life savings on something that might be doomed to fail.If I do decide that it is a good idea, of course I will talk to some business experts and lawyers and such before I spend any money. I'm asking you now to help me decide whether or not to spend time any money consulting professionals. If I do decide that it is a good idea, of course I will talk to some business experts and lawyers and such before I spend any money. Resolved Question: 16 Year Old Computer Repair Charge Price?

Hi, I'm going to take a big step forward and start up a computer repair business and I would like to know how much I should charge for my services? I am extremely good with computers from getting rid of viruses and spyware to fixing a computer that won't even boot up. Anyways I was looking for exact prices for what I am doing but any help would be great! Geek Squad (overpriced computer fix-it team) charges a ton, so I'm confused on how much I should charge considering I'm only 16 it will probably be less. Anyways how much for the follow services? Spyware and Virus Removal?: Fix a none booting computer: Backup computer: Internet router Configuration: Or an Hourly Rate?: Anyways any help is nice! Thanks for all answers, best answers will defidentally be given. more

Resolved Question: Trade Name registration in another state?

Voting Question: Need advice on starting a computer business?

I'm 16 and me along with some kids from school would like to start a computer building/support business. Basically we'll take orders from people, build what they want, and be their personal support people/repair men whenever something goes wrong. The only problem is none of us have any idea on how to get started with this. Could anyone provide me with some suggestions on how to get started? What will we need and most importantly will we be able to pull it off? Will it coast us money to get started and what would a good service charge rate be for building the computer? How about repair rates? We're all self experienced in the computer field. more

Resolved Question: Interview Follow-Up Etiquette and Questions?

Ok, so I applied at Best Buy the other day for a position in Geek Squad. I'm not getting any hours at my other job, and I really need this one. They called me in Labor Day and I sat down with the hiring manager and had a interview. He told me over the phone they liked my application and wanted me for the job. We spoke for about 45 minutes and he had me fill out some general paperwork and answer technical questions about computer service and repair, which I answered confidently and (I believe) correctly. A week later I came in and spoke with the same man who interviewed me, he spoke to me briefly before introducing me to the manager of that stores Geek Squad. Me and that manager proceeded to speak for 30 minutes about my qualifications, experience, and knowledge and he outlined the job for me and told me a lot about what it's like to work there. After that second casual interview, he asked me to write my name and phone number on a business card and said he'd call me in a couple days. After that, him and the hiring manager talked to me and said they were really short on employees and were going to contact the District Manager about me and then get back to me. It's been almost a week since that, and still nothing. I was thinking about going in again, but I don't know who to talk to or contact. Should I even go in or am I pestering them? Should I contact the district manager? Are they just playing hard to get for some reason? Any and all advice is helpful. more

Resolved Question: What are some of the best bang for buck ways to market a new business?

This year I started a computer repair business, and I'm currently working my business full time, but I need to get more customers in order to be viable as a business. All of my customers have been very happy with the service I've provided, and several have been repeat customers, but I'm having a hard time getting new customers. Currently I'm doing advertising online with superpages/yellowpages and pay per click with the big search engines. I'm also getting in the local yellow pages, but I need to wait a couple of months until the new directory comes out. I've also started a facebook fan page, a twitter page, and a blog with articles I hope are helpful for my customer base. I don't have a lot of cash to invest, but I have time. What do you think I should do to get the word out? more

Resolved Question: Computer technicians: how long does your average repair take?

I'm thinking about starting a small computer repair business, servicing small business and residential customers. I understand that this is a difficult question to answer, as some repairs take a few days and others take a few minutes. However, if you were to look at all the repairs in a given month and average the mean time to fix, what are we talking? more

Resolved Question: help reformatting my computer?

ok i'm fed up with my computer. it has a lot of junk and like all the memory is used up (realize i can get more (and will get more, but... not yet)) and i got the stupid antiCMOS virus that i can't get rid of... i'm done haha. i have nothing really on my computer so everything i want i put on a flash drive. so i'm gonna reformat. 1. how do i do this? i have the cd, i realize you let the cd start up when the computer starts and hit space when it asks you to boot from the cd. i know a blue screen with writing is next and you do what it tells you and also delete the old windows and install the new one into the old space. then windows will start installing. i know all that (and am right about the above?). i'm gonna have a little bit of trouble when it's almost done and it asks for the key thing though and all that stuff. i've done it in computer repair class but that was like business stuff we put in and not sure what to put in for my computer. i don't have any of the original cd, boxes, or whatever for my computer - just the computer and borrowing the windows cd. i know you have to put in a key thing in that is found on the original box but i can't find that, is there anywhere i can look on my computer before reformatting? 2. so i don't have much trouble doing the actual reformatting after i get the key > after i do the above i just install service pack 3, microsoft office, adobe reader and flash, avast antivirus, firefox, and whatever programs that i used before, right? anything else i need? pretty sure the basic stuff comes with the cd like media player and basic programs and stuff. 3. the other major thing i need to know is this: in my house, we have a modem plugged to the cable wire and stuff. that modem is connected to a wireless router that is connected to my computer. the router gives comcast internet to two other computers in my house. so my computer has like the main comcast connection or whatever. the computers get internet when my computer is off. question: will the computers still get internet when my computer's reformatting? and if so or if not, will i have to get the comcast stuff back on there (any stuff)? or will the comcast stuff be there automatically because the computer is connected to the router which is connected to the modem which is connected to the comcast internet? or do i need to put the comcast stuff on the flash drive and save it? or do i need it at all - will i just get internet from the modem and need nothing else? i tried to describe my stuff good so you'll understand, please help! thanks! more

Resolved Question: Out of state sales tax question?

I operate a small computer repair business from my home in Iowa. So far all of my customers have come to my home to have their computers repaired, so I have charged them Iowa sales tax. I recently started doing on site service and someone in Nebraska has requested that I do an onsite visit there. If I do an onsite visit in Nebraska, will I be required to get a Nebraska Sales Tax # and to charge them the Nebraska Sales Tax rate and then remit that money later to Nebraska, or do I charge them the Iowa rate and then later remit that money to Iowa? more

Resolved Question: Should one pay before or after the job?

Years ago, I used to write customized programs for small businesses. I would embed code within the program that said, "If date equal dah-dee-dah then end program" This way I could be assured of getting paid and they could not pay if they did not like the program. Good deal for all involved parties. When doing computer repair (i.e. optimization, crash recovery, installing new hardware etc.) or anything else (like selling advertising) I might be left holding the bag after paying the printing and design costs. Now I collect upfront or no ad. I went under after accepting printing ads for big restaurant chains (I knew they were not going to stiff me). I had no idea that many of them were more than willing to pay late fees so they could stick with their own alloted times (sometimes quarterly) to pay their accounts payable. I was rich in accounts receivable with no gas in my car!!! Not a smart move on my part. Question: Is there some legal precedent that states, as a matter of protocol or even de facto who should pay first - the party buying the service or the person receiving the service. While typing this it crossed my mind that we usually pay for products upfront and we pay for services like hedge trimming after we see the job has been completed to our satisfaction. but many "services" involve buying a product (the parts or supplies) needed for providing the service. But this whole thing begs the question - what is or or what are the legal guidelines, if any, for who should pay first? I'm watching one of the judge shows and the judge says it is a mistake to pay a contractor upfront. I would say it is unwise for the contractor to do "it" upfront and possibly take a hit if he/she gets stiffed. Hence my question - who should pay first?V.B. - I noticed you left out Microsoft. I am afraid to do anything that prompts me for my code because they HAVE disabled my pc and I had a legitimate copy. those guys are crazy!! I guess because they do warn us, huh? That makes it ok? more
