moreResolved Question: Besides practicing and developing in skills, how would a teen go about starting a photography business?
I am fourteen. I've been interested in photography for about seven months or so now. I own my own DSLR and my own equipment, etc. If you would like to see some of my work, I've included a link down below. I am just curious how I would be able to jump-start my career ahead of time. I believe that at my age, it is important to seize every opportunity you can find. I live in a place where there's not a lot of businesses or...well, much of anything. I've recently emailed a locally owned clothing store about possibly offering services to them with no charge. Also, I will be talking to a guy who owns the local coffeeshop-he works with my dad at the university-about displaying my work there, once I get a whole collection.
So what do you think? Nothing is guaranteed. The clothing store will most likely not even give me a second look just for my age, and I doubt my photos are good enough to be displayed/sold in a coffee shop.
here's a link to my online portfolio (sorry, i know they're not very good):

by the way, both of my parents are professors in business...just adding that, so i would be able to manage it. :) and also, there are not any classes etc at my school until you are a sophomore...:(

How often do you go into a cafe and sit down, order a coffee and ask yourself- "this coffee is terrible, I could do so much better than that, and why are all these people in here paying money? I'm not pretending to be a "know all", but It can't be rocket science!
I'm from a hospitality background, 24yrs old and want to start my own small cafe business, offering simple, tasty and qaulity service with a smile in a chilled out atmosphere. Can't be too hard can it? Apart from loads of hard work, great business position, trade skills etc. How is the best way to find out about the nitty gritty in terms of:

moreResolved Question: Short story, please help edit?
I've posted this before, but I just made a lot of changes to it, and I want to know what people think. If you have any suggestions, I would REALLY appreciate it!
Tick tick tick. The constant noise in my mind was going to drive me mad. Tick tick tick. Shut up, SHUT UP! I clenched my fists and held my eyes shut tight, but I was unable to quiet the explosive inside myself that was sure to go off at any second. Never again, will I do this to myself, never again. I quit. I'm done. Even in my current state, I know that's a lie. I need this, every bit of it. I can hardly comprehend living any other way. It's not only the drug I'm addicted to, it's also the lifestyle. The struggle, I need the struggle. Not knowing where I am going to sleep each night, and other uncertainties, are what keep my heart beating.
The room is dark. The only light is coming from the moon, which just barely shines through the cracks of the boarded-up window. It was only now that I remembered I was at some squatter house with a six or so other people. These were my friends, my buddies. My fellow fucked up, wasted-life junkies. Perhaps in a past life we all meant something to someone. Maybe we were even contributing members of society. But now, now all we are is the sidewalk you spit on. Yes, my friend, we are, in fact, the filth of this country. At your service.
"Come on, man, let's go." Yes, yes, let's go. Let's go for a little walk. We already have enough to last the night, but this guy has money, and it's the best time of the night to score. He thinks he’s my friend, but sadly, I don't even remember his name. With us, a friend isn't what you may consider a real "friend". It's just another word for connection. The more "friends" you have, the less shit you pay for yourself. Having a good "friend" may be the difference between sleeping on a park bench or a couch. That's what friends are to us. To use, and be used by.
To be honest, I feel a little bad for this kid. He hasn't figured out how things works yet. He's real young, but he's got a lot of cash. Probably stole it from mom or dad, or dying grandpa. It's not a concern of mine. Anyway, he thinks we're close, so this score is looking bright. For me anyways.
The kid explained to me the place we were headed. My vocal chords felt lazy, so I didn't tell him I knew exactly where we were headed. I knew the place well.
I could see the house about 50 yards ahead of us, but I could probably spot it from a mile away. It was most likely, at some point, a soft blue or periwinkle, but with each guest that walked through the door, the house had faded to the color of dusk air. I opened the tall chain-link gate and stepped into grass that was up to my knees. The front door cracked, then immediately slammed shut again. It was a signal. "Walk right in," it said.
The kid stepped ahead of me. I could tell he was eager. Fine by me. The first step of the porch creaked when he stepped on it, so I skipped that step. We slid through the door that we had opened barely enough to squeeze through, and quickly shut it. That's just common courtesy in a place like this.
The smell inside overpowered me. This would be fresh junk. For a second, I forgot where I was. Who I was. What it meant to think, to move, to be. Even just the smell kills.
I was brought back to earth when I heard a voice. "Hey, James!" James? That's not my name...must be the kids. James, James, James, have to remember that. "You the one paying? I'll need to see the money first."
"Yeah, let's talk in there," said the kid/James, nodding toward the kitchen. I'll make myself at home while they take care of business. There's an almost-full pack of cigarettes on the coffee table, I might as well help myself to a few, for later. The house itself is a piece of shit, but he’s got some perks in this place. The television is at least 52 inches wide. I bet his toilet plunger is worth more than my life.
The two men walked out of the kitchen, one counting a wad of cash, one staring greedily at the drugs he was holding. What a beautiful variety. James knelt to put the junk in a briefcase that I hadn't realized he'd been carrying the entire time. They shook hands, we shook hands. "Pleasure doing business with you, gentleman," the dealer said, in a manner so typical I almost felt embarrased for him.But it doesn't matter, doesn’t matter at all. Right now, all that does matter is getting back to the squatter, and fast.
We left thedealer’s house quickly, and walked with a pace much quicker than our trip there. My brain felt like it might ooze of out my nose, or ears, or an even less explainable cavity if I didn’t distract it. I glanced over at the kid. He was counting his steps. I could read his lips well, “…34, 35, 36…”. He looked insane. Or rather, like a strung-out junkie what wanted to know how many steps it took from one of the best dealers around, back to the place we were staying. I probably didn’t look much different.
He veered of the street, towa
He veered of the street, toward an alley. “Where are we going?” I asked, hesitant to follow. I just wanted to get back and start cooking.
“Shortcut,” he managed to say quickly, between footstep counts. That struck my interest. I figured he’s wandered around this town more than I have, though I’ve been out here longer. I know where I am, I know where I’m going, and I don’t like to roam around like some 30-something teenage delinquent. But if we can get there quicker, I’m all for it.
We were about half way down the alley when I saw three people approaching. They were quite a ways away, but it made me nervous nonetheless. We’re thin, pale, and holding a briefcase. Anybody with half a brain would know we have either money or drugs. Anybody with a weapon or fist is going to take possession of it without second thought.
James was farther ahead of me, so I had to holler. “Hey kid, let’s turn around, I think we’re going the wrong way.” I was lying, but it didn’t matter. James continued to
. James continued to walk ahead, and count his footsteps. He was now counting in a loud whisper. It was starting to worry me. “Come on, man, let’s go.”
“158, 159…” He was speaking aloud now.
“James, what the hell?” He started to shout.
“163, 164, 165!” He was screaming at the top of his lungs, as if someone was attacking him, and the only way to ward them off was to yell random numbers. I glanced ahead. The three figures were now gone. He probably scared the shit out of them.
He stopped walking dead in his tracks, and was no longer yelling. In fact, he'd stopped counting all together. I watched him attempt to take a step, only to stumble and fall to the ground.
I ran up and knelt beside him. “James? James, what the fuck, kid?” I shook him, and shook, and just kept shaking him. “James?” He wasn't breathing. He stopped breathing. I couldn't call 911, I couldn't call anybody. There was nothing I could do.
So I grabbed the briefcase, and I ran.
Okay that's it. Thanks in advance.
No I want it to be explosive. Explosives "go off." Explosions are the result. And the contractions are because it's in first person from the perspective of a junkie.
Hal 9000- Good thing you are level one, then. They actually helped edit it, like I was asking. Their answers were great...
I added more, it's pretty rough, but read it if you like. It still isn't finished, but I think I'm getting close.

moreResolved Question: Do you use text message marketing?
I work for one of the best text message providers in the country. I am just starting off with this company and I'm trying to think of all the different types of businesses who can use text marketing effectively. I also need to think of creative ways of present it to them.
To make one thing clear, we do not allow businesses to spam or just blast messages out to anyone or everyone! This is an opt-in only service and we completely compliant with all federal and industry regulations.
Here is what I have done so far....
Most of my sales focus in on owner operated restaurants, boutiques and coffee shops. We promote our service to them as a loyalty program/mobile VIP club. I get a great response for business, but its very hard to get them to try it out even though we don't require a contract.
So my question is, do you use text marketing? Is so, what industry are you in? Do you have any ideas on how I could offer this service, or do you know of a good niche market to talk to??
Text is very very effective, but many business owners are afraid of trying something new during these slow economic times.
Thanks for your help!
I forgot to mention that we also promote to clubs and bars and they are our best type of business so far.

My mother owns a coffee shop in Providence, RI That is open monday through friday. We got an offer from a luxury apartment community in Cumberland RI, to set up a small coffee cart in their main building on Saturdays and Sundays only for about 4-5 hours each day. I am having trouble finding information for my mother about licensing and permits and if there are special weekend only business permits. at her permanant location we do all of the baking and cooking. When we go to the coffee cart location, we will be bringing all of the baked goods with us. We are doing this on a trial basis to see if residents of the community would even be interested in using our services, so it seems foolish to apply for full licensing and permits if it's not going to work out. My mechanic flirts with me...he stares at me when (he thinks) im not looking, he services my car for free sometimes, he is very chivalrous, he's open in discussing some aspects of his life to me. One time I said it's not easy being single and then he said "tell me about it!" I called him today to ask if he was closing his shop for good- he owns it (his gate has been closed earlier than usual) he was kind of rude in replying saying its only been closed one time....then he asked who it was calling and i told him it was me and his demeanor changed and i said it was closed yesterday and the day before and he was like yeah it was (so he lied) he was nice and telling me why- (he had to take care of business) and i had actually used that to segway into asking if I could treat him for coffee or a meal since he was always "hooking me up" He said that wouldn't be necessary. I played off my embarrassment and kept up my open bubbly persona until I got off the phone but I don't understand- Im already an established repeat customer, what does he get out of giving me freebies and being open with me if hes not romantically interested?
What gives..?
moreResolved Question: Read this and tell me what you think. I wote this 2 years ago?
Ok where should I start? Well do you know what, all my life, well up until I was 13. I always thought ok was spell O-K. But in actuality it is spelled o-k-a-y. That is so weird. The American people are so lazy we can’t even spell out a whole word. Americans are so fat and lazy we can’t write to more letters. “ Oh no I can’t two letters because I might to take a break from watching T.V. and eating my Crispy Creams while sitting at Mcdonalds drinking my coffee to write four lousy letters.
Do know that in a national survey that McDonalds is the number one place to buy coffee. McDonalds? I feel that McDonalds is barf in a bag on a tray Dunkin Doughnuts is 2nd. Because America drives to Dunkin Doughnuts. You have herd the slogan “America Runs on Dunkin’” It has the little businessman running holding a Dunkin Doughnuts coffee cup. I can’t recall the last time I saw some one running out side of gym class and still they aren’t running very long or fast. Ha and third is Starbucks. I herd today that people go to star bucks once keep the cup and then put cheaper coffee in there used coffee cup. How cheap are we America to use old cups with old coffee in it so we look cool? Ha. Personal I think coffee is gross and I’d rather drink coco.
America is so cheap and stuff is so over priced that is sickens me. Milk is now going up to four dollars a gallon. That just makes me sick. Buying milk is going to put people into the poor house. But we will go to Starbucks buy one cup of coffee and reuse it with the McDonalds coffee.
Do you know how bad the service in McDonalds is? We go there after church on Sundays and they are so slow. The way it is set up if order say a number 10 sandwiches they will give you the large meal. So you always order saying just the sandwich. They always pretend they didn’t hear you. They always forget to give you something. But they charge you for it. So when you go up and say that you forget it they get up all huffy with you. They always say you didn’t say that. But it was charged on the receipt. They feel who are we to ask a favor of some one who works at MCDONALDS. Like they are better than use. Oh ya Burger Flipin is a 10 on my list of success.
America is obsessed with food. Have you ever been to the barfarossa. We go there sometimes on Sundays and watch the black ladies wear their elaborate hats. Yes I said BLACK ladies it doesn’t bother me much. Whoa got to slow down getten ahead of myself. But don’t worry know I will talk about that later just you wait. The food there is so gross. It is awful it is so greasy and fatting. It just makes me so sick. But we went their and there was an air bubble in the ice cream machine and it would make a loud pop and the fat black ladies would jump back screaming and hollering. It was so funny. I think I died laughing.
Have you herd of the new diet ALI. The fat people of America think it is some miracle pill and they will just lose 100 lbs. What they don’t realize they have to get of there lazy butts and exercise. They are going to be so disappointed when it doesn’t work. I can’t wait to hear the fat people of America join arms to take down the ALI program. They will literaly stampede down the ALI company walls with tens of thousands upon thousands of pounds. Oh I can just see the law suite that will arise. I will laugh so hard. Now I am not saying am I’m a skinny minny but I am average.
It seems that in America there is to types of people in the world extremely obese people and than people are so skinny that look more like poles than people. In all those magazines that are so skinny that they are nothing. Now men look at these women they think that’s what woman are supposed to look like. Well news flash we don’t. I know that woman like to eat desserts and chocolate is our favorite. So we are not going to look like that. Those models are like a machine a well-trained robot. They are programmed to throw up everything that they eat. They to eat chocolate and go through a bindge cycle.
My grandmother had a magnet that said those indulge bulge. And that is so true. We can eat of sweets but it should be in small seizes. We don’t need to eat so much. We just want a small taste and that’s all that we need to eat. But I am no dietitian so don’t listen to me.
America is obsessed with budding into every one else’s business. On the news today all you hear is Paris Hilton goes to prison. Paris Hilton out of jail. Do you know that in the schools we can’t talk about god, or the true meaning of Christmas? But we can talk about the meaning of Hanukah. moreResolved Question: Read this and tell me what you think. I wrote this about a year ago.?
I know that I must know of the business I will get involved with, but would like to have some ideas of some kind of services and goods that would probably work out over here, what for instance would you do in Italy? I have thought of an internet shop or maybe a coffee shop, or a small grocery shop, but it must be something that will really work; Please help.
moreResolved Question: How creative are you?
Hello,
I live in a city with two colleges and a very large high school. Furthermore there is a large community of "artsy/organic" people living here as well. The city has a lot of charm and even more potential. Ten years ago it was a dump and now little boutique shops and businesses are popping up along with an influx of upper middle class citizens. Business in the area is thriving.
Sadly I have noticed that there are no recreation or personalized services in town. Specifically catering to the target crowds I have mentioned above.
My question is: As a High school or College student in a relatively urban setting, what kind of business/service would you like to have available to you? There are enough bars, coffee shops, restaraunts, billiards and pizza joints in the area so I would like to target something else. Something....outside the box but affordable addicting and of course FUN!!
Any Ideas?
moreResolved Question: Wrong for business in church?
A couple of people in my church and I have been talking. We really need a youth pastor in our church and we cannot afford it in our church budget. We were talking about different options and one of us mentioned selling coffee and doughnuts before Sunday School and in between Sunday School and church. It would be closed during all worship services. My question is: Is this wrong? Some people said it was a sin because of when Jesus overturned the tables at the temple. However, I heard in my New Testament class at HBU that he was mad because they were cheating people out of money and overcharging because there was no where else for people to buy animals for the offering. Anyways, what is yall's opinion on the situation? Is it wrong to sell coffee on church grounds to help pay for a youth pastor for our growing youth group?

moreVoting Question: How should managers handle poor or non tipping customers?
A small resturant - 10 tables - serves full breakfast and lunch. A table of 4 business men sit there for 4 hours with laptops and cell phones conducting a meeting. They order only coffee, water, juices. Waitress provides polite and prompt service, while resturant is busy, and all other tables full. They leave only a one dollar tip, after telling us, "Thanks everything was really great." Waitress upset - she lost money on that table, which could have turned several seatings of full orders and paying customers. We dont want to piss these type of people off, but we are a resturant, trying to make a living. The dollar tip is an insult. How do owners deal with these situations?
