New rocket aims to offer Mach 2 thrill ride to the edge of space

BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP): Entrepreneurs of the new commercial space age plan by 2010 to be flight-testing a practical four-engine rocket ship that will be capable of taking people on Mach 2 thrill rides up to 200,000 feet (60,960 meters), and which also has the interest of the Air Force.

The design of the Lynx rocket, a two-seat ship a bit more slender than a small executive jet, was shown off Wednesday by Xcor Aerospace, a Mojave, California-based company that has spent nine years developing rocket engines.

Fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, the Lynx is intended to operate like an airliner, making up to four flights a day while using runways for takeoffs and landings like a normal airplane.

CEO Jeff Greason withheld specifics of costs and technical details at a Beverly Hilton press conference, but said he was certain investors will finance construction of the Lynx, which he estimated from this point forward will cost "south of $10 million (euro6 million)'' not including previous development costs. more

Business Care Lawn Service Questions asked

Open Question: Rental Issues. How can I protect myself?

The issues are the following: I am a college student who has one other roommate and currently living in a 3/3 duplex. I signed back in April of 2009 to pay $900 with lawn work included. From the very beginning our landlord was unfair to us because she only charged our neighbors $750 for rent for the year for the mirror image of our duplex. Our leases are the same however our neighbors pay less. Throughout the year we've had problems with our lawn care. I paid a non refundable $300 pet deposit, and expected that the living conditions for my pet would be adequate. However, throughout the year, our grass has gone even months without mowing (in Texas!) which made it impossible for my small shitzu to even go outside and do his business. She is extremely cheap, and never once put a smoke detector in our place which I believe is illegal. She never specified in the lease about repairs, and when we've had problems with leaks, she told me several times that she would pay anything over $100. Being a college student, several times I just had my dad come over and fix it in order not to pay. Recently we had problems with our garbage disposal, (something my dad couldn't fix) so I emailed her and told her we needed someone asap, and she sent her plumber who told us that he NEVER charges her because they are friends. My landlord obviously wanted to get $100 from us, for a service that was free to her. She has now become very aggressive and even got into a verbal and nasty arguement with the neighbors, and now she is trying to do the same with us. She is making it clear that she isn't going to refund us our $900 deposit. Our lease is over April 1st and we are expecting to recieve some of that deposit. Before we moved in, a guy who used to live here left the duplex, and left it completely dirty. She never gave us a move in sheet, and we never really asked for one either. How can we protect ourselves? What is considered normal wear and tear? Please let me know how we can protect ourselves. From the very beginning this woman has taken advantage of college students. more

Resolved Question: Need help picking best type of truck...?

I am in a Business Communications class that is writing a long report about a technology use policy. As a part of this report, in my group I was picked to be a lawn care service truck driver. I am a girl and know NOTHING!! about trucks (or cars for that fact). I am required to explain 3 different areas and ultimately pick the best one (between 3 or 4 examples). My 3 areas to explain are: 1. truck safety (which is the safest) 2. price (best for the price) 3. gas mileage (for our pretend business, which is going to get the best gas mileage pulling a trailer of "lawn equipment") I don't even know where to start without having just a little background knowledge. I am doing research right now. If you need more details, you can personally email me at adixon2008@hotmail.com DO NOT email this yahoo account, I don't check the emails. SEND QUESTIONS TO THE HOTMAIL ACCOUNT. I will still check here as well. Even if I could just get 3 or 4 trucks suggested, I could look up facts and statistics myself. I just have no clue what a good truck is. ALSO if you do provide information, please provide any links to websites or related material if possible. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: I need a creative name for a lawn care service and ideas on how to get it going:]?

My husband, John, and two friends, Brian and Xavier, have a lawn care service they've started. They've been doing it for about a year now and have built up a pretty good assortment of regular customers. They mainly mow lawns, but occasionally rake leaves, weed eat, pull trees/shrubs, trim hedges, pressure wash roofs. They also do random labor - they're helping someone build a shed this spring, they help people move, one of the trio is an electrician, some plumbing, a LOT of construction work . . . basically they do lawn care and everything else on request. They've decided to start turning this into a real business and for that, we need a business name. Something short and catchy that encompasses the whole of their business in a nutshell . . . if that's possible. Also, if you have any ideas that might help them promote their business and get it up and running, I'd love to hear them. Thanks so much!"Hahaha." That's hilarious. Serious answers only. Please don't waste my time. more

Resolved Question: Should I stay and work at the post office making $60,000 a year or run a lawn business?

I am trying to decide if I should stay at the post office or do my lawn business full-time. I was also offered a school bus driver position ($18,000 a year for 20 hrs. work each week) that offers full health care. I can cut during the day when I am not driving the school bus. How much should I make to maintain the same standard if I leave the post office? I am 38 yrs. old, make $60,000 a year at the post office, and must work until I am at least 62 yrs. old. When I retire, I will get 1% for each year from the post office, money I invested into thrift savings and social security. If I decide to go with the lawn business I will make $18,000 a year as a bus driver and $80,000 from my lawn service by myself. Most likely I will always have someone helping me. I have also heard when you are self-employed, you can also get a break from certain expenses like workers comp. for example. I believe my employer and I have to pay 7.5% each for workers comp. Resolved Question: I'm 13 years old and I want to start a bussiness...?

My friend and I really want to earn money to save up on things we really like. I am a a fairly good artist, and I always wanted to create a comic book series. I need a certain software and tools for that. I also want to save money for college, or maybe a future car. My family can't get all that, so my friend and I decided to start a business! Today, we brainstormed a lot of ideas and we both realized that we had good gardening skills. So we wanted to do yard service. A few hours later, I found out that it can be difficult to maintain a business, and I was worried that people won't take us seriously. Besides, I'm a short person, so people might think I'm a clueless kid. I want to be a businesswoman when I grow up, and I want to look back at this when I'm 30 and knowing that I was a serious, hardworking girl. I would also know that this is where I started, and I can look at my successful business in the future. My problem is, I don't know the right way to advertise, how much money I should charge, how to deal with stingy people, how to make this all work! I'm also having trouble on what we should name our business. We both have different names and if I try to combine them, it will look like a mutant heap of letters. Of course, I'm not going to call this "Amanda's Yard Service" (My names Amanda) because what about Izzy, my friend? As for advertising, should we print out fliers and put them in every mailbox in our neighborhood? We don't have colored ink! Or should we advertise in a different way? Oh, and our yard service offers lawn mowing, weed pulling, grass and bush trimming, plant watering, and everything that your yard would want! We have all the tools we need for this, and we love nature so it would be nice to care for it. We are thinking about charging two dollars to mow a small lawn and three dollars to mow a big lawn. We want our prices to be cheap because that will attract customers, and the economy isn't doing well (at least that's what the president says, I'm not very fond with economy) and since we're just young teens, people aren't gonna pay thirty bucks per lawn. And how do I deal with stingy and rude people? I'm really stressed about this and I need to know the ins and outs and pros and cons of what I'm about to endure. I'm hardworking, determined, skilled, creative, and my friend is to. So if you don't feel like writing much, then just give me a useful website in which I can refer to. (Not the ones with popping, flashing, ads and/or outdated and bad info.) I will take the time to read all of your answers! Please, please. I am in desperate need of help! I really appreciate those of you who took the time to acknowledge my question and hand me a great answer. PS: Even after we get enough money for what we need, my friend says that she doesn't want to do it anymore after wards. But I think that we should keep on doing the business, as it will be educational and we can save up for more money to get more things. How do I convince her to do this? And also, for example, if someone wanted us to do their lawn for two dollars, should we include that they pay us each? As in, they pay me two dollars and Izzy two dollars, so instead, they actually pay four dollars? Or should it be that they pay us two dollars and we split the profit and each of us have one dollar? Do you agree with our pricing? Do you think we should reduce it or increase it? Oh, and our pricing should be an even number so we can split the money. Please, I really want to know! Thank You! :) more

Resolved Question: How can I charge off a customer's account (i.e., put it on their credit report)?

I own a lawn care business in Florida. We have a customer who was a real you-know-what about paying and she still owes us like $80 (plus late fees over the course of the past year, since it's been over a year since we serviced her two properties). I know it doesn't sound like much, but we have several customers who keep giving us problems about paying, so I want to find out the best way to handle this. It's not a large enough debt to sue over, so I guess my only two options are selling it to a collection agency and getting paid like 10% of the debt (not enough to even go through the hassle) or charge it off and put it on their credit reports. How would I go about doing this? That may not even be worth my time, either.... :/ Thanks in advance.I don't have their SSNs. We don't really use actual contracts very often, but most of the communications are via email so that in itself is a contract (they state yes, do the service, and we agree to it and invoice them that way). The problem is mostly with the out of town people and we're considering making them pay up front in the future b/c of this. If we did choose to sue, we would be okay b/c I doubt someone is going to come down from out of state to defend themselves...but the main issue with that is the money it costs to sue someone to begin with. more

Resolved Question: How much should I charge for lawn services?

Me and a buddy are starting a lawn care business. Most yards to this point have been small and easily quoted. But, we have to bid out a job today for about 2-1/2 acres in the back and a front and side yard. We want to the job, but don't want to low-ball ourselves and then dont want to overbid and not get it. What is a reasonable price for this size yard? more

Resolved Question: Small business ideas.?

What are some good ideas for a small home based business that could later grow into something larger? Currently I make signs, banners, small yard signs and random stickers (like the In Memory Of and car club decals). Apart from that I do pressure washing and other small jobs on the side. I've though about adding lawn care to the pressure washing bit but, it seems like everyone and their dog does lawn care now days. To me it seems like you have to lease a building somewhere if you're offering a product or hope like hell word of mouth and a bunch of advertising works out for you if you provide a service. Of course I have business cards and flyers and all that scattered across the county advertising the services I provide. I'm just looking for something different that catches on real quick or might help improve my income that has a low cost start-up. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Need help with job-related information (for a minor)!?

I'm a 14 year old male who just wants a few extra bucks here and there. I was wondering if I could work at a grocery store, pizza parlor, gas station, cashier, etc. What I'm wondering is: What places can employ me? Do I need a work permit? Would I need to do the income tax (if so, more information is needed)? Would I need to make a resume even for such a trivial job? Could I start a self-owned business for things such as lawn care, personal services, etc.? And any other questions that may come up I would like to be answered. Thanks ahead of time.I went to the site that ? recommended and this is what I found: 1. List through income of us. 2. Login to your clarification. 3. Kind the info as essential plus submits. 4. Do again steps 2 inside the way of 3! 5. Take release of sum of spending earned as of us at month-ends. Unlike extra agenda that come into view in the direction of be similar, we in fact pay out you for each verified shape you present online! Which doesn't make sense. Could you clarify it? more

Resolved Question: How to start a lawn care business?

I have just retired and want to start my own business doing something I enjoy doing. I would enjoy nothing more than starting my own lawn care service. Resolved Question: can you report a business?

i want to know if its possible to report a business to someone, i guess the police or something, for multiple offenses? its a commerical lawn care company for a shopping center, who have been gotten into altercations with me and some people who work at the shopping center several times. we called the company but the manager tried to say they were just doing their job after a few of us have politely asked the employees to stop blowing grass all over our cars or to at least blow it back off, like normal lawn care companies do. after the 5th time it happend the employee aimed his leafblower at us while we stood out there with our cars and when we confronted him he laughed in our faces. its not the whole car thing although it is absolutely ridiculous that other commercial lawn companies take the time to clean up their messes...but its the principal of the thing. an employee working for a professional company should be able to at least do their job properly and handle a situation with customer service skills. i dont really want to go to the police other than to report his agressive behavior but other than the company itself is there a higher authority to report this to that will make sure they take the situation seriously? more

Voting Question: Do you have to have an attorney present to make a service agreement or contract?

Resolved Question: How can I spend less time playing video games and surfing the web?

I'm sure it's very common for 16 year old to stay inside and play games all day. I'm tired off it, all summer long I played games 24/7. The weather has been horrible. Most of the time it was muggy and damp, which prevented me of doing stuff outside. The area that I live in isn't very populated and there's hardly anyone around. I don't have a brother or a sister or anything, so I can't have fun with one of them. I don't drive, I don't have a job, I don't have a lot of friends. Don't get me wrong, I have some friends, but not a a whole lot. They don't live anywhere near hear either. I'm just tired of spending my life in the cellar and I want to do something about it. It's really hard for me to put down the controller or step away from the Computer monitor. There's really nothing for me to do in my neighborhood. Moving isn't an option, so I can't do anything about that. I felt like starting a lawn care business, but I don't know how and I want to keep the money. My Dad want's half of every profit that I make. How could I get the service started? It's probably the only type of job that I could get, it's something that I like doing, and it could get me out of the cellar. How could I make the broshcure or whatever to get the word out? Thanks for your help! more

Even a small business dealing with what I like. Alright number 2 says starting a local Lawn and Car care Service. This is just something that I want to do to make some extra pocket money. I enjoy washing & waxing cars as well as doing yard work. I like to do physical labor when it's nice outside. I just don't know how to get it started. For a start I just want to work around my neighborhood. I'd also like a part time job to get some REAL working expierence. I put one application in for Weis this whole summer and that was it. There's so many other places that I have an oppurtunity but I'm just oo lazy to get out there. (Is it possible to earn the highest degree in Karate in 10 years)? I have a small interest in planes and flying them. I've often thought about it in the past but I don't know how I would get started with that. Okay, my cousin's are in their mid 20s and one's close to his 30s and they still live with my Aunt & Uncle. They just recentely earned their College Degree's in Graphic Arts. It doesn't take that long to get it and they probably have an Associates. Would I be able to become a Lawyer or a Psychiatrist and start working in some place as soon as I get out of College and have more expierence than them in their field when I'm 26 or 30? And finally, I want to start major Corporation dealing with Electronics and Video-Games. Law & pshyciatry are just two of my ideas out of the many. But would I be able to start a small business like web design or something right out of College? Thanks for your help! I reall appriciate it. more

Resolved Question: Help Lawn Care Business Start-Up?

Some of my friends and I are looking to start up a small lawn care business in my neighborhood. We are looking at printing off flyers and we own and understand all the equipment. My question is, if we intend to mow the lawn, edge it, and clear it of any sticks or pinestraw, how much should we charge? Voting Question: Trying to find a cashier job for summer break?

I'm in college and already have a full time job during the summer. But I start early in the morning and am done no later than 3:00 in the afternoon. I'd like to pick up a part time job as either a grocery store cashier or at a gas station. That's too much time for me not to be doing anything to make money since I need to pay for college. I start spring break on February 27 and will be home for a week and was planning on looking for a job during that week. Is this too soon? I'm also not sure if they'd want to hire me: I'm a college student that already has a good full time job. It seems like there's a lot of high schoolers or else young adults that never went on to college that work in these places around my town. Also, I've never had a proper interview before! I took over my brother's lawn care business and then was recommended by a neighbor with connections for my full time job with the park service. I'm not sure what the process for a grocery store/gas station attendant would be. I heard you don't need a resume for these sorts of jobs: but I do have one. Is it likely these places would have a problem with me just wanting to work nights and weekends? Would they mind if I already worked a 40 hour week somewhere else? I just want to make sure I'm prepared. This is a small town so I don't have many choices and chances to get hired for a job. Thanks for your advice. more

Voting Question: Should I start lawn mowing/care business?

Here is my current situation: I am a 30 year old male, married with 2 children in a suburb of Indianapolis. I am currently an accountant for a firm and not completely happy with my job. I have recently started a real estate investment/property management company with a family member. He is the bank roll and I am the "worker bee." I have a strong interest in starting a lawn mowing service for residential and commercial. It would be something part-time while doing the rental property part-time so I can leave my full-time job. What would it take (or how much work) to make approximately $25,000-$30,000 per year with the lawn service? Do you think this is a good idea? I am 6 weeks away from earning my MBA and sick of sitting at a desk and staring at a spreadsheet all day long!!! more

Resolved Question: What do I need to know or do before I start a lawn care business?

Me and two of my friends (we are teenagers) are starting up a lawn care business this spring and summer. We need to know if we need to apply for a business license, talk to the IRS, or any other legal matters. We only intend for just the three of us to be working on the lawns that we service; therefore, we won't hire anybody. And it will more than likely be one year. We plan to split the profit four ways, with the extra portion paying for expenses. If we give our 'business' a name is it therefore taxable? Just tell me everything that you know, please. more

Resolved Question: Can a Homeowner's Association management company charge the HOA for their equipment?

I own a home in a neighborhood governed by an HOA as most do. Our HOA is managed by a property management company as most are. I never realized how bad the management company was until I bought a second home last year also in an HOA neighborhood and after seeing how fair that companies management fees were, how much they worked, and how accessible and helpful they were to the homeowners I began to realize how bad my primary residence's management company is. I have always thought they were not up to par, mostly because, as many of my neighbors have agreed, I can never get a hold of the manager of this huge corp. that is assigned to my neighborhood, and I've never felt that they ever even came to check out the neighborhood or would take care of necessary things, and charged a lot for their fees in comparison to what the provided. But recently I was sent the proposed 2009 budget for both of my HOAs from the management companies. They both obviously have management fees, which I understand they deserve to be paid for their efforts. For my second home that is the only line item in the budget for them and all of the others are items relating to the property such as tree trimming, insurance, painting, etc. My primary residence's however has a line, an expensive one, of the management company's fees, but then also a line for office supplies, and a line for office equipment. And the office equipment was $5000 a year for our 90 townhome neighborhood. I know my other management company has equipment and supplies they use too, but obviously this comes into their management fee. The way I see it is it is like paying a lawn mowing service and then having to buy them a lawnmower to use, or paying an attorney for 5 hours of work and then having to buy them a computer. Office equipment and supplies is part of their business costs to operate as a management company, they are the ones who should have the tools they need to provide their service of management. I mean you don't hire a contractor to work on your house and then have to provide him tools to use. Obviously these costs of tools and stuff will be reflected back to the HOA, but it should be in there fee, which is already more than high, but I understand that a fee from a company with great tools and technology would be more than one without since you would think they could be more effective with those things. So I would think a management company that has no tools of their own would be super cheap since you are essentially only paying for their labor at that point and not for the entire service. I mean if I hired a lawn care company for say $50 a week to mow my lawn, the owner of the lawn company isn't making $50 a yard, he is really making say $25 since another $25 or so represents his costs of gas, equip., maintenance, etc. Just like if you have someone come install say a new sink in your house, you'd pay less to someone who installed a sink you provided, than someone who would come put their stock sink in since they have costs and labor to be paid for. Additionally, what equipment could a management company possibly need that costs $5000 a year for just one neighborhood of my size, I mean I understand a computer, phone, copy/fax machine, but that's about it, and these things last a lot more than a year, and additionally, these are things being used by more than one neighborhood by that management company, not just ours, so all the neighborhoods should be sharing those costs, so I believe they are probably collecting $5000 from each neighborhood for this "equipment" which may costs $5000 actually, but they say are collecting this from 5 neighborhoods to buy one piece of equipment that will be used by all 5 and they collected $25,000 to buy $5000 of equipment. Additionally, if my HOA is paying for this equipment, our HOA is the owner of the equipment, right? Not the management company. I mean if you buy the tools for the contractor to use while he is fixing your house, he isn't going to be able to keep those tools when he is done. Additionally, since it is our equipment in their office we should be able to make sure it isn't being used for any other neighborhoods or managing their own business, but solely for purposes of managing our neighborhood. I am a real estate broker and I just can't imagine charging my clients for listing their homes and then also charging them for equipment so I can buy the necessary phone, paper, computer, e&o insurance, listing fees, etc. needed for me to do that service. I have costs that I incur, but those are my costs to be able to provide my service, not the homeowners. If I was to be paid say 3% for just my time that would be grossly high for the level of work I do, but I have costs of gas, etc. that all get paid too which make the costs worth it. One of the major benefits of hiring a company to provide any service is that you don't have to buy the tools and every other person in the world doesn't have to because that servicer has the more

Resolved Question: Hello :-), I would like to know how to make a business plan for a small lawn care service?

10 POINTS FOR BEST ANSWER I would like to start up a lawn care service, and note: if I start it I will be working at it very hard - I hope to go to college for either business or entrepeanuereship (wow BAD spelling, sorry) and I will take this very seriously! I want to know what kind of business plan I should have, I obviously want to make it like a real business plan but a very simple one - I have to wait until football is over so I will have a good amount of time to make my business plan before I will be able to start. I am 15, going to be 16 in late november and I will be able to drive which would be a plus for the company once I turn 16, my parents want me to have a job so I'm sure they will lend me the car to work for the company. I want to be a cheap and reliable service for families that want a cut lawn but don't want to pay a landscaping company to do it for a large amount of money. I will be going alone on this until I have enough houses that I can use the help. I need to know about the business plan, how I make it and how I determine how to: - Price my service - Decide when to hire someone, most likely a friend - How much to pay for a lawn mower, should it be gas, self-propel, or elelectric? - How I should advertize myself - and anything else you can think of Please let me know your thoughts either in an explaination or a link to a good website that will help me with this, thank you very much! more
