Answering Service Business Questions asked

Open Question: Can background check information be expunged or removed?

Is it possible to have Nolle Prossed charges removed from a background check? I was originally charged with 2 felonies and one misdemeanor last year. During the court process, the unwarranted felonies were dropped by the DA and I pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor and received a probation and community service sentence. I was recently offered an excellent job opportunity pending a pre-employment background check and drug screen. On the background check form, the question was asked if I had ever been convicted of a crime. I answered honestly about my misdemeanor(which I had advised the HR rep of before the check) and date of sentence. I also did not have any convictions at the time of my original application. The company came back after receiving the background check information with all the charges and rescinded the offer of employment stating that I had not revealed the felony information. I had no clue that the other felonies were a part of the background information since I was never convicted. I had provided them the court information that I was only convicted of the misdemeanor and the felonies were dropped, however they said it would not be a good business decision to hire me at that point. They did however tell me that if I only had the misdemeanor on the background check, there would have been no problem in the hiring process. So does anyone have any thoughts? help? opinions? answers? Please help! more

Open Question: Insurance Professionals Only: Should I take the AU (Associate in Commercial Underwriting) before or after?

taking the CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter with a commercial concentration) program? I am currently in the commercial department of a very well known insurance & financial services company. My current duties include making auto/property/gl/inland marine changes to existing policies, quote & issue new business umbrella policies with insured specific underwriting approved information, research and produce loss run letters, and answer call center questions from insureds/agents/oas on an occasional basis. My ambitions are to become a higher level of an insurance professional, something along the lines of an underwriter or even a commercial insurance lines expert. I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration General Management & have obtained the INS (Program in General Insurance) & the AIS (Associates in Insurance Services) designations. I am currently studying for the ACS (Associate in Customer Service) & will be taking it very soon. I'm on the fence as to what insurance designation I should go for in the next testing window. The AU is only 2 tests while the CPCU is 8 tests. Obviously the CPCU would require a lot more work & effort and a much longer time frame but it's more highly recognized than the AU so I would rather get it first. But if the AU class work would help to better understand everything in the CPCU program then I should go that route. Any suggestions will help me with my career track please! Thank you in advance. more

Resolved Question: What's the hurry spanky?

I was just replying to you and was surprised you closed the Q that soon with you thinking you got nasty responses , and I assure you , you misunderstood what H is telling you , H did not mean to insult you. However please read my answer (or now question) below , and answer it if you have further inquiries on this subject. Other members input is always welcome. --- I bet you none of these are actually sent by real Dubai based companies or businesses , most of these are fake from people in other countries impersonating Dubai or UAE entities , to cash-in on the boom in dubai and the coverage it has been getting worldwide, they abuse that and all these e-mail lists and spam servers are not actually based in UAE . A lot of these come from Nigerian, Russia, east Europe, US, India, & Malaysia. The UAE can't reach these people because they are not operating from with in the UAE. Of course there may be some actual or real businesses sending promos, but for the real ones you can simply contact them and ask to be removed from any promo list or just add their e-mail your spam filter. Some times your own ISP/ webmail sends you ads for other companies they deal with , these are not really spam, they are just part of the way the operate. Unless you are on Hotmail they do send a lot of spam on that , try Yahoo or Google or whatever there are thousands of free mail websites not all of them are after spam money. As for operating a "scammer" business in UAE, that is very hard to do and the law is very strict if caught. The UAE has a specific internet law to prosecute any one that does that. But of course nothing is 100% proof , they may find a way but I don't know of any (internet scam from within UAE) , and haven't heard of such cases in a long time. We have several e-mail boxes with a UAE provider , and 1 of them always gets spam as you describe and it is quite annoying to the point we stopped using it, while the other e-mails on the same provider do not have the spam problem. These people who spam you must have gotten your e-mail from an online list some where or from a real company that you dealt with (like if you bought some thing or subscribed to a magazine etc). Where in this company sold the e-mail list of its customers to other parties for profit. Note that for the legitimate spam (not scams or viruses) opening them is not that risky because you need to open those to read how to "unsubscribe" or find out the contact e-mail that you can send a complaint to to make them stop sending you the ads. If you are not sure if has a malicious script in the e-mail then you can stomp that from being activated by turning off the script & java from running in your browser options settings. (this will also turn it off in Outlook e-mail reader -- meaning "options" in IE or Control Panel , it is the same) Just because a spam e-mail has pictures of Dubai does not mean it was sent from there , a lot of travel agents around the world work on commission and pay people to promote their deals TO DUBAI, from their own XYZ country, on the internet , it is not really any one from Dubai doing that. To check from which country & ISP the e-mail is coming from first you need to change your webmail or mail reader program to display full headers (usually not displayed , they are like the caller ID info), after which find out the domains + IPs shown on the headers text and do a WHOIS search on them, this will show the actual ISP and what country it operates from. Once you have done that go to the ISP page (which will be given along wit contact in the WHOIS info), and try to find out from their website how to lodge a span complaint . Send the complaint report to the ISP along with the offending IP of theirs (one of their customers) and a copy of the actual "headers" as proof it came from their service. Also provide exact time it was received because dynamic IPs are shared and they can only find out by the time this occurred. They will start an investigation until thy match which of their users did it and they will suspend their account. Some ISPs depending on the country may actually report the user to police or file a law suit against the spammer if they are a respectable company. Finally UAE domains are limited , and there are only 2 ISPs, namely Etisalat and Du. If your spam shows other ISP names then it did not come from UAE.H, yes I too did not see any other replies so that is why I assumed he misunderstood . But after this Q he replied privately and explained it was because of the name calling , so I don't know exactly may be there were some thing we missed. more

Open Question: What would be an appropriate attire for a years of service celebration?

My husband has worked for his company for 10 years and is being acknowledged along with 100 other employees. We called the event coordinator to ask what the required attire was and was not given a clear cut answer. She said she would like it to be somewhat semi formal but didn't expect it. So she she said maybe a little more than business casual not quite semi formal. I don't want to be over or under dressed...So I guess my question really is what would be in between Business casual and semi formal? Would dress pants/slacks, a dressy top/blouse and boots w/heels work? I really don't want to wear a dress as I recently had a baby and am not quite comfortable with the extra weight. Thanks in advance, more

Voting Question: Need help, receiving unemployment but former employer is appealing?

I live in Illinois and held two jobs last year 2009 but the one I am currently working for is discriminating against me and the other one forced me into resignation due to mistreatment. I was approved for unemployment benefits early this month February and the abriator sent me a letter stating that I was discharged and my former employer told me it would be best if I quit rather than being fired. I was told unemployment spoke with my past employer and they said I quit due to “personal” reasons. This is not true. It was because of discrimination, retaliation and verbally abusive hostile work environment. I have a phone hearing in a few weeks and can not afford a lawyer. I never signed any documentation and gave them a verbal 2 weeks notice. After reading my statement of the events that took place please let me know what you think and how I should go about this properly. This is very long by the way, sorry. Thank you. My past employer forced me to resign by making my work environment hostile and personally attacking me, not scheduling me for a couple weeks and it also made my mental and physical health problems worse and caused a lot of stress that was relative to the job. These last few months I have had to see doctors and I due to physical health problems. When I started at my other job I really put a lot of time and effort in and helped a lot of my co workers out that need time off by taking shifts for them. July 25, 2009 I was on my way to work at the first job and I got stung by something on the way there riding a motorized scooter. My arm started to swell up really bad and I was getting dizzy. I tried working at my first job for about 20 minutes, but the pain was too much to handle. I was sent home on my way home I stopped at the other job that was supposed to work and showed upper management my arm, by then it was turning red and hiving up I was in tears from the pain. She then said ok go home get some rest we will cover your shift. The next day I came in and I was written up for missing the day before! Within the first week of May there was a personal attack on me from my second job by one of my mangers and co worker because I was not able to take a shift for someone. From then on the co worker treated me very poorly and added to the hostile environment by going off on me in front of customers if I made any mistakes or needed information for products in order to complete my job duties. Whenever the coworker was working the service desk and I needed to call for something for a customer I would hesitate to call over. There was an instance where she did hang up on me. This has happened with my supervisor as well. Anytime I needed an over ride for an item or had a question about a price check or was un sure of the correct department number to call for a price or new item for a customer she would get upset because I was either not able to find it in the employers ad or get a hold of someone in the correct department because they would not answer and she would have to call an over head page to the department which is part of her job duties. In September I had a customer who was giving me a hard time about something along the lines of prices being wrong on a few products he bought and expired coupon issue. This employer does not accept expired coupons of any kind be it manufacture or from our store since May 2009. I explained this to the older man in a professional business way and he started going off on me and yelling very loud and humiliating me in front of everyone. I was on one of the self scans at the time this took place. He referred to me as just a kid and I don’t know how to do my job correctly and how ridiculous this was. After referring to me as a kid I could help but tell him I am 25 years old and don’t you dare call me a kid. I went to walk away from him to call my supervisor and he then said hey don’t you walk away finish your job! He said I want to talk to your manager. Supervisor came over and apologized to the customer and told me to go on break. I told my manager who at the time was in charge about what took place and all he told me is it happens and to just get over it. In early November I was helping a customer with a price check on one of the self scan checkout lanes. I must have not realized the customer wanted this product still and I accidently deleted it out of the computer. At the time the co worker that treated me poorly came to relieve me for break. When I returned she yelled at me for supposedly leaving the customer and that he wanted the item still. I did not inform her I was back from break because of what she had just put me thru. One customer cared enough to get the co worker’s name from me that saw this action take place. I was extremely embarrassed and humiliated by this person in appropriate actions towards me. A few weeks later I got pulled in the office and was told money was missing out of my drawer and I would be put on audit. The same workerI have filled charges with the EEOC against my current employer for discrimination but EEOC said they would not be able to help with what happend at my other employer workplace. I submitted a more lengthy report to them.. The same worker works cash office that has a personal grudge against me. I talked to upper manager and asked if she or anyone could have taken the money. I was told no. One of my managers told that co worker what we had discussed and the co worker again lashed out at me verbally. For the time I worked at my second job I was always on time for work and breaks. Except for a couple instances where I had to take public transportation. I was written up for being 2 minutes late. I was also then pulled in the office because I supposedly was late on a break by one minute another write up which is not true. I start a stop watch timer on my breaks always. I am OCD so I am good at watching time. The last thing they did was back in November they did not schedule me for a couple weeks. I was told that was because there were no hours for those weeks. But everyone else had gotten scheduled! I checked the schedule for the following week and it said 2 days. The next day I went to check it againand it was not there. They put me back on schedule without telling me thenn wrote me up for not showing up.Employer is aware that I have mental disabilities due to frontal lobe brain injury as well as possible physical health problems that involve my neck, back and hips that are currently being checked out and that I have addressed to my medical doctor many times. more

Resolved Question: Questions on starting freelance web design.?

I'm completely new and know nothing about business, but I'm very good with Dreamweaver and Flash. I'm a senior in high school and I'm starting to think about doing some freelance work in my town and the big city I live by. I'd like some answers from web designers themselves. I'm not out to make billions, I just want to have a little extra cash to throw around... It might evolve into a business if I do good enough. BUT, I have a few questions, you need not answer them all if you can't: 1.Do I need to pay taxes for my services? 2. What would be a good way to start? Craigslist? Putting an ad in the paper? Putting up fliers? Asking local businesses? All of these (haha). 3. What would be a good price-range to charge? I don't really have ANY experience with charging prices. 4. If I were to minor in web design in college, what classes should I take... or will the college tell me? 5. Does the customer pay before, or after I show them the site... Is it sort of like a no re-fund deal? 6. What is a good hosting service? Thanks if you answer any of these! more

Resolved Question: Am I making the right decision?

I am a 30 year old male, college graduate in business management, with 5 years of management experience under my belt. Even so I still have no solid career. I am living at home with my parents and hating every moment of it. I would move but can't due to my current employment situation and being about 40k in debt. Everyday that passes by I become more and more frustrated with my current situation. I have been seeking new employment but we all know that there are limited opportunities available at the current time plus I haven't really decided what I want to do (When I grow up). Career wise that is... I recently sat down to brainstorm about what I can imagine myself doing, and enjoying, in 10 years. The answers on my pad were practicing law, federal government, investigation, corporate management, traveling, etc... So then I asked myself, “How do I get there?” I immediately thought the military. Mind you I almost joined the Marines out of high school but decided on the college route instead. So I did my research, figured out that I could enlist as an officer and get into Administration, Intelligence, or Legal/Law enforcement. Everything sounded great; I was really excited (still am) about the job possibilities, benefits, and everything the service has to offer. Yet after speaking to a friend of mine who was in fact an Army recruiter but is now in processing, I come to find out that due to the fact that I had a DUI two years back I cannot enlist as an officer because I will not be able to obtain security clearance. I would have to enlist as a soldier (not officer) and gain my clearance over a 1-2 year period. After that I could then apply for OCS and be on my way. After learning of this I was a little disappointed. But I am still seriously considering enlisting. It may sound funny but I feel as if I have had a calling. One telling me that, "this is my time, this is what I need to do for myself." I don’t understand it completely to tell you the truth. My mother and father think I’m nuts, worst decision ever. Sister and brother in law have mixed feelings. All my friends support, and just feel I should do what I want to do. I guess my questions are: Am I crazy to want to do this at 30 with the credentials I do have? Is it true I will have to enlist as a soldier rather than an officer? How long before I can become an officer? Is it worth it? If so, what rank would I begin at? E-1, -2, -3? I think I have written enough for now. All thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. more

Open Question: I am a partner in a partnership business. Can I sell my services to the business?

Me and my brother own a music business. We help musicians get bookings at night clubs and other venues. Since I am a piano player too I have used the business to book myself for gigs and have the business pay me for those gigs. At the end of the year I issue myself a 1099-MISC. Is this a proper accounting and tax practice? I've looked on the IRS website and I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this. Thanks for the answers! more

Resolved Question: Do I have any chance of getting into NYU?

I'm a junior atm. I just toured it today and it's everything I could ever want from a college. I have a 98 overall grade, I think for all 3 years of high school actually. freshman year I was only involved in psychology club and I did maybe like 2 hours of community service that year for my sister's church. sophomore year I joined FBLA, interact, model un, and I was secretary of psych. I did indoor track, too. I also got 2nd place in desktop publishing for statewide competition for FBLA...and I did summer theatre that summer. this year, I'm in FBLA, model un, the school newspaper I'm VP of psych, I'm in drama club and I got a part in both the fall play and I our spring musical production of beauty and the beast (mrs. potts, so that's a supporting role) next year I'm planning on becoming an officer for FBLA, drama club, possibly model un? and I'll also still be VP for psych club. and I'll be doing summer theatre as well. I haven't taken an official SAT yet, but I took a past version in my SAT prep course and got 670 in writing, 640 in reading, and a 570 in math, with a total of 1880. I've been in honors english since freshman year, and I've had my schedule packed (no lunch since middle school!) I took 2 business classes which got me some college credit through a local community college (though I'm sure that means nothing), I'm in concert choir, was in freshman chorus, and took chorus all throughout middle school. I'm also a year ahead in math; I'm in precalc as a junior, though it's not honors. I'm in the highest level I can be in for each class except for math. it's not my strong suit. I didn't take any AP classes this year, because the only ones offered were in science (which is also not my strong suit) and AP US history...which I did take but then made me realize I have no interest in american history and I dropped down to level 3 vs level 4/honors/AP. that doesn't show up on my transcript though. I also switched from french (I got 3 years including middle school) to spanish, which I'll have 3 years of at the end of high school. next year I'm taking AP politics and government, AP psych, AP english, anatomy and physiology, a half year course of prob and stats (only a level 2, though...), concert choir, and spanish. I think I'll be in national honor society, too, though I'm not sure yet. they haven't selected juniors yet. what says you, yahoo answers? more

Open Question: Trying to figure out my "dream job" - Does this sort of job exist?

Hi all. I know I'm grasping at straws expecting the Yahoo Answers community to point me in the direction of my dream job, but other than a couple of points I really have nothing to lose by asking, so here I go: I am a college grad with a Bachelor's degree and six years of bookkeeping/administrative/customer service experience, as well as supervisory experience. I mostly stumbled into that line of work haphazardly while I was just trying to make some spare change during my school years. I was hoping to switch to a more personally fulfilling career this year, but now rather than figuring things out at my leisure, I've been given a strong push to quickly figure out what I want to do since the facility where I worked has shut down and now I am out of work. I have a decent severence package so I still have some time to ponder the situation, but this whole unemployed thing is getting me antsy. Anyway, these are the qualities I have to offer and/or am looking for in a new job: *While of course it would be nice, I am not really looking nor expecting to make six figures a year. I am more concerned with quality of life and having free time rather than making tons of money. I am willing to forgo luxuries like cable TV as long as I am otherwise financially secure. At any rate, I live in a two income household so I will not be the only one paying the bills. *I have entrepreneurial inclinations, or certainly a need to work more or less independently (minimal supervision) with an ability to exercise my own judgment. Almost every single member of my family, including my parents, has done the small business thing, so I know what's involved. Right now I don't really have the money necessary to jumpstart any ideas I've come up with, so this aspiration may be more of a long-term requirement than an immediate expecation. *I want to do work that is meaningful and fulfilling. While the day-to-day tasks of work ALWAYS become boring over time, I want to at least be able to look at the big picture and feel like I am fulfilling a positive purpose within the world. In particular, my concerns lie with matters of animal welfare, habitat preservation, and the like. I also have interest in spiritually empowering other people, but I shy away from traditional religion and new age type stuff, so that doesn't leave me much career option of that kind. *I want to travel. Even if this travel is not explicitly built into my work, I should be able to get away for a vacation twice a year, and at least one of those vacations a couple of weeks long. *My strengths include strong writing and proofreading skills, typing, computer literacy, and using the internet for research. I am also detail-oriented, organized, and consider myself to be a planner and a problem-solver. *I consider myself to be somewhat creative and would enjoy composing written works, but I would not feel comfortable composing written pieces freelance as my primary source of income. I would consider this to be a good side project. I also don't really have a professional portfolio that would land me a full-time gig doing that sort of thing. *I am introverted and would NOT be happy in a sales or marketing career. IF I was pitching about something I really cared about and thought was worthwhile, I could probably do it, but I am definitely not interested in hawking some hot new product, whether tangible or intangible. So is there any semi-secure career option that would play both to my interests and my strengths? Preferably without requiring more schooling? I know it's a longshot, but I'm interested to see what (serious) ideas others come up with that I might not have considered.Under the bullet-point mentioning travel, I would also like to mention that I have an interest in other cultures, both in the present and in history. For example, I had considered teaching English abroad as an option that fulfilled all of my strengths/interests, but didn't like the idea of leaving the country for a full year or more. more

Voting Question: Why do some people provide poor customer service?

I do not understand whether I ask a question and it is consider to be trivial, then people might not give me an answer. I mean you are there working at a business. If I do not have to depend on you to find out, then I go find out for myself. You are getting paid and if someone want to find out about your workplace, then you should be happy that they have some interest in your business. For example,I know that this grocery store that opened in April 1992. I just ask a cashier that I know, since I am a regular costumer if she can find out the exact date for me. Then, she told me along the line that I should have something better to do than hanging out here. In my mind, the only reason why it seem like that would be I am filling out my lottery tickets and while I am there,I just ask questions. If you think about it,there is a lot of things in life that are trivial. Another question would be I just ask what kind of computer do you guys use,but the thing is that I was there paying a parking citation. The city clerk just tell me that she does not know, since the city buy them. Well, she is the City Clerk. I mean she is basically the city itself and she could have check the computer for me. In addition,I am a taxpayer and I feel like that I am obliged to find out if I ask. Gheez, even on television there are television shows that are trivial such as how a pencil is made on the Science Channel. 9:03 A.M. CST-9:04 A.M. CST:Headline typed! 9:04 A.M. CST-9:18 A.M. Voting Question: How did you get BMW MOTORRAD to take responsibility for the problems you bought when buying a f800gs? Or?

I have a f800gs that from day 1 has had defects and some life threatening. How did you contact any person that was knowledgeable or able to get you to the person that did know BMW motorcycles/products/service...? All of my attempts to get correct information about BMW motorcycles has been very frustrating and seemingly useless. No person at BMW seems to be willing or able to answer questions. They do not know anything about and will not connect me to any person that knows anything about their riders gear/parts/service... I have called and e-mailed bmwridersgear.com multiple times with NO response. I have never called and had a person answer the phone, it is as if they are out of business. I have asked Motorrad and the dealers service/maintenance questions with multiple different answers. This leads me to believe they are lying and or do not know their product/job. I payed and wasted many days at the dealerships each time my motorcycle has died or had a problem. I have used 2 different BMW motorcycle dealers to do service and multiple warranty repairs on my f800gs and bmw will not give me any straight yes or no questions as to whether my motorcycle has been fixed properly. Motorrad has offered me about 500 in dealer cash to shut me up but I would like to know how to contact a person at BMW that knows their products and is willing to truthfully answer questions like any good business used to be able to. I know it is hard to know a lot about a product or service but a person should at least know how to contact a person that truthfully knows a specific product or service. Is there a non BMW person or company that knows the product and is willing and able to answer questions and help a customer and not make them want to hit them with a baseball bat? I have only 2,000 miles on the motorcycle that I supposedly bought new, with 3 miles on it. 2 or 3 people at BMW Motorrad have told me I am the second owner also. BMW has now said that is not true. I am just very frustrated in my dealings and lack of knowledge/responsibility/willingness to interact properly with a person. I payed more for a new BMW vs a Susuki/Yamaha/Harley/Ducati/KTM...thinking I was buying a quality product and service, that was not always breaking down or falling apart. Boy have I been proven a idiot! Thank you. more

Voting Question: Construction Contractor for Veterans Affairs. Do I have to pay Sales Tax (NY) when purchasing materials for VA?

I have a 3 yr contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs to perform construction services, I am a GC, conducting my business out of, and only inside NY State. I can not get a straight answer anywhere. When I am purchasing materials for VA jobs, shouldn't the purchases be sales tax exempt? The VA tells me to pay tax, but when I give them a PO to inbed or hide the tax in the line items, because they aren't supposed to be paying it!?? I am almost 100% positive I can be exempt, but don't know how to go about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!! more

Resolved Question: Captial one card NON SECURED that I will be receiving or SECURED card from US bank to rebuild bad credit?

Please read this in full and respond with appropriate answers only to all questions listed. Do not list false websites or you will be reported! I want to first say that I am 25 years old and back in 2004-2005 I went thru some credit problems. I have not had any credit since and have no credit debt and it has been paid off for almost 2 years all accounts are closed. I have 3 negative accounts that will come off my reports by late 2012. I would like to start rebuilding my credit. I have recently been rejected by bank of America for a regular card which they talked me into applying for and a secured card so I have 2 inquires as of January 2010 from them. One inquiry in February 2010 from applying for a NON SECURED Capital One card with a $39 annual fee and have been approved will be receiving next week but after many reviews of the company they seem to have deceiving business practices, raising the APR rates and instead of putting for example $300 as you credit limit they put instead what you charge which would hurt my utilization on my credit scores. If you try to close the account they add fraudgelant charges to your account etc. Their customer service is from India and is not good. Is this true? I read this on yahoo answers and my 3 cents complaints. If so should I try for a US bank SECURED card with $300 down with a $35 annual fee? The credit union out here does not offer secured credit cards. If I can not receive a secured card from US Bank should I open up a 1-2 year $1,500 secured CD with my bank which is Harris bank to show an installment loan? I have 2 charge offs and a credit card account with a couple 90 day late payments which is CLOSED also. I have 5 accounts in good standing but are closed and were never used. How much will my credit scores go up from 1-2 years from now? Currently before all new inquires for 2010 my FICO scores were TU: 597 Equifax: 648. I will only be using 7% of my limit of $300 instead of under 30%. Refer to my other question on here from the other day for more details on my credit situation titled “How to rebuild credit with different types of credit and my scores quickly?” Thank you. – 10 points for best answer -I already know alot about credit from research online so do not tell me how to handle credit. Keep your debt to ration utilization under 30% but 7% or less is better because this is how you obtain a very high FICO score. Do not open alot of lines all at once and wait 6months-1 year. Do not close oldest accounts this affects the average age of credit. I know all of this.Always pay in full to avoid intrest charges and higher rates, never pay minimum payments. more

Voting Question: Is Anyone Crazy Enough To Do This?

BRODIE’S BOARDS: Making business suggestions Please review the sources and considerations below to help you answer the four “business plan actions” at the bottom: Source One: There are several steps, materials, and tools involved in making surfboards. The basic materials needed are foam, fiberglass sheets, resin, and catalyst. To hand-make a board, the builder will need a saw, electric planer, cheese-grate planer, sand paper, gloves, respirators, a broom, good fluorescent lighting, squeegies, and a space big enough for all of this stuff. Building a board is broken up into several steps. Check out this website to see some of the details. Keep in mind that these represent only a part of the process. Source Two: This website shows some of the basics about shaping surfboards. http://www.answers.com/topic/surfboard Website on investing in capital to expand production: http://www.amosweb.com/cgi-bin/awb_nav.pl?s=wpd&c=dsp&k=investment,+production+possibilities Website on Captial goods investment: http://www.dallasfed.org/educate/everyday/ev1.html Source Three:Brodie is a surfboard builder. He is currently doing all the stages of production, from the first cut of the foam, to the final stroke of the resin to laminate the board. Since Brodie is an experienced shaper, it takes him about 2 weeks to shape and laminate a board so that it is ready to ride. (few hours on shaping and up to two weeks on the lamination and curing.) Brodie has a number of costs to consider when he is making and selling his boards. Basic costs: surfboard blank: $75 Rent on the space $100/month Resin: $15/per board Fiber glass cloth $21/per board Hours of labor 12 hours/board Source Four: Visit the websites below to support your understanding of marginal cost, marginal product, and the law of diminishing returns. http://hspm.sph.sc.edu/COURSES/ECON/Cost/Cost.html http://hspm.sph.sc.edu/COURSES/ECON/MCost/MCost.html http://ingrimayne.com/econ/TheFirm/ProductionFunct.html Source Five: Check out this site about investing in Human Capital. http://nashville.bizjournals.com/nashville/stories/2003/06/23/smallb5.html Consider the following issues: *Brodie is a great surfboard shaper. He can shape a board pretty quickly and deliver a good product. He feels that he is a bit slow at glassing though. He spends about an extra 2 hours per board than many of the other laminators that he knows. *The town that Brodie lives in has just passed a law that lifted the tax on the use of the foam that he uses to makes his boards. *With the rising of oil prices, the cost of his foam and his resin (oil based products) has been rising over the last several months. *The local laminating shop told Brodie that they would laminate his boards for $150 a board. (The average cost per board is $170). *There are several people who have asked if Brodie needs any help around the shop shaping, sanding, sweeping etc… They are willing to work for $10 an hour. *There are two other surfboard shapers in Brodie’s town * When entrepreneurs succeed in their business ventures, more goods and services are available for consumption. Successful business ventures also increase the employment opportunities available to people within an economy. As you have seen, there are many risks involved in starting your own business. While there are various business structures available, you can never avoid all possible risks when creating your own business. There are many incentives that entrepreneurs consider when assuming the risks involved in creating their own business. A business owner may be motivated by the incentive of a sense of satisfaction involved in provided a certain good or service to the community. Often times, entrepreneurs enjoy the sense of being their own boss and some of the potential and hard earned freedoms that come along with that responsibility. The expectation of a profit is a common incentive for many entrepreneurs. They believe that they can offer a good or service that will make them money. more

Resolved Question: [UK question] Deductible expenses against mystery shopping income?

I have a full-time job earning above the personal allowance and NIC threshhold. I've just started doing some mystery shopping work on the side, which is nothing to do with my day job. What's involved is basically you go to e.g. a pub and have to order a drink and a meal, and report on service times, quality of food, staff attitudes, condition of the toilets and so on. The pay consists of three things: 1. Reimbursement of the amount that you were required to spend in order to do the assignment (e.g. the particular meal or drink that you had to buy and comment on). This has to be receipted. 2. A travel/mileage fee. This is a set amount and proof of actual spend is not required. In most cases this does not cover the cost of my Tube fare there and back. 3. On occasion, there is also a fee for doing a job - small amounts, up to a fiver. So far, when there has been a fee there has not been any mileage/travel paid for the same job. Obviously I still incur a travel cost for the job. So mentally I see this as being the same as 2. In essence, it's a free meal/drink/purchase in exchange for your time and trouble and the fact that they are choosing when and where and what you eat/buy (the instructions are very specific and there is little or no personal choice). You don't actually make any money out of it. Unfortunately for me, I work in tax (I specialise in a completely unrelated area) and am a member of the CIOT, which means that I don't have the option of just keeping quiet about my earnings on the grounds that it's such a piddly amount and nets out to nil anyway and nobody's going to pick it up. It's essential that my own tax affairs are clean as a whistle. So... I know the rough answer, which is that everything (1, 2 and 3) is taxable and I can deduct my expenses against the income. But are the required purchases an allowable deduction? Do the Revenue apply Mallalieu v Drummond at this level and say "oh well you'd have had to have eaten anyway and so it's dual purpose" and disallow it? Is there a distinction drawn between things like e.g. having a meal at a mealtime, compared with something that's clearly a luxury item like buying a cup of coffee (which I wouldn't have needed to do in order to survive)? Does it make a difference whether or not I am required to comment on the quality of the food as part of the assignment (for example, if the assignment is in a shop the brief might just be "you must make a small purchase" but they don't care what I bought or whether I enjoyed eating it)? Since all I get is reimbursement of expenses that I've actually had to pay out, I don't make a cash profit. If I have to pay tax then these meals will be costing me "real money" (albeit only 22% of their cost) even though I wouldn't have chosen to go and have those meals if I wasn't required to by the assignment. Then again, who ever said tax was fair? I had a look on the HMRC website and they had no specific notes about it. All their stuff on setting up a business doesn't really cover what I'm doing and is too general to be of use. Does anyone know whether they have a specific policy on this? Thanks for reading! (Please note: I am in the UK. I don't need to know how it would work in any other country. Thanks!) more

Resolved Question: Can you answer this business plan question?

One of my homework questions from the textbook says: "The specific parts of a business plan will vary depending on the goods and services the firm is selling. Explain." I don't really understand what this is even asking! Do they mean that the parts themselves are interchangeable, or just that the content of each part will vary? Any assistance would be appreciated! Thanks! PS Tried this in the homework section already without a good answer yet, so I'm hoping if I put it here a business person might help me. Sorry if it seems out of place. more

Resolved Question: Are there two rulers, Theocracy [Rule by God] and religions today [Rule by Satan] & Does the Devil exist?

Interesting points about theocracy and religions today below: Churches such as Catholicism have abandoned God's Kingdom [or theocratic rule] by preaching that world peace can be brought about by entities such as the U.N. [Rule by human] This one reason they are the Harlot spoken of in Revelation. [Or sold out to the human way like a harlot making herself a enemy of God by that sinful act (James 4:4, "Adulteresses, do YOU not know that the friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is constituting himself an enemy of God." Do not hate people but do not want their low standard ungodly ways in religion, government, or life. See chapter 5 of Galatians for genuine Christian high standards.)] True Christianity does not get involved in the wars of the nations. Supporting this claim, consider the following: “A careful review of all the information available goes to show that, until the time of Marcus Aurelius [Roman emperor from 161 to 180 C.E.], no Christian became a soldier; and no soldier, after becoming a Christian, remained in military service.”―The Rise of Christianity (London, 1947), E. W. Barnes, p. 333. [More careful review shows they were not in government business as well at all.] All of this follows what Jesus said at John 18:36 "Jesus answered: 'My kingdom is no part of this world. If my kingdom were part of this world, my attendants would have fought that I should not be delivered up to the Jews. But, as it is, my kingdom is not from this source.'" [Not from human source but God as his only source (See Matthew 4:8-10 where the Devil would give Jesus the kingdoms of the world if he would only worship him the Devil but Jesus said NO! He would only worship God his Father!)] Found on Internet: "Does the Devil or Satan exist? Where did he come from?" Near accurate below. "Why did Jesus refer to the Devil as the “prince of this world”?—John 12:31 Why does a loving and all-powerful God allow the Devil to influence men and their affairs? Prior to his fall, the Devil was the angel “Lucifer, son of the morning.” (Isa. 14:12) He was created and remained perfect until iniquity was found in him. (Ezek. 28:15) His iniquity was pride, which led to his ambition to “be like the Most High” [God].—Isa.14:13,14 Satan’s ambition led him to tell the first lie — that Adam and Eve would not surely die if they ate the fruit of the forbidden tree. (Gen. 3:4,5) Through this lie, Satan usurped authority over man, and since that time he has used lies and violence to maintain his hold over the human family. He is the father of lies and a "murderer [of the human family] from the beginning."—John 8:44 The Scriptures promise Satan’s hold over mankind will be broken. First, he will be bound for 1,000 years in Christ’s kingdom so he can deceive the nations no more. (Rev. 20:1-3) Thereafter, the Devil will be released for a little season to test mankind a final time, and then he will be destroyed in the lake of fire.—Rev. 20:7-10" Since the first two people on earth left the genuine theocracy rule and believed Satan's lie, they can rule without God, mankind have to be tested if they want God to rule or the Devil. The Devil is a counterfeit god and death only from him. Jesus Father Jehovah is the genuine source of his kingdom and that source will lead to life on a new clean earth without Satan and those who love his ways are gone! We have free will choice so follow the counterfeit god or the genuine God! The genuine God has high standards to live under his new system, are you willing to live up to them to be there? The great golden rule of treating all others as well as you like being treated is the key. (Matt. 7:12) Why would anyone want anything less? more

Resolved Question: Is Murray Park owned 100% by Rangers FC?

This i just typed out for steviebhoy and he went and accepted an answer halfway through it, so here it is again for you. It was formed as a seperate company to offset the cost and is entirely self funded, the company is called Rangers Youth Development Ltd - however the company is fully owned by Rangers FC. If a player comes through the ranks Rangers pay the company a fee, which goes towards the running costs of the company. Likewise if Rangers don't want to take on a youth from it, the fee goes to Murray Park from another club. Rangers invested £2.5 million in the company, and 4 other investors put in £1 million each. The training ground itself is owned wholly by the club. The company is one of a few under the ownership of the club, including the website, rangers media investments ltd (unrelated to the fans website of the same name), the retail business (now not operating, run by JJB) and financial services (again, carried out by another company). Like it says on page 27 of the financial statement linked below, all are owned 100% by Rangers. Murray Park is an asset of Rangers, Rangers own it 100% http://www.plusmarketsgroup.com/cgi-bin/reports.cgi?action=DisplayReport&report=rangers2009.pdf more

Voting Question: How can I go about reporting First Premier bank for harassment?

Alright here is the deal, I got a contract with verizon and all these business calls come in for a crystal I've gotten calls for her prescription reminder at CVS which was easy to let them know I'm not crystal and I've gotten other credit callers looking for payment. Now with the information that I'm not crystal most stop calling. However, First Premier Bank will NOT stop. There is literalty no end they call EVERYDAY at least once if not more. A few times I was able to answer and tell them "I'm not crystal this is jessica, I don't know crystal you can ask verizon if they have her new number please stop calling." I have told them 3 different times to stop take my number out of the system. Now they ALWAYS call as an unavailable number but always leave a message looking for this woman. Currently I have my privacy setting on my phone to restrict calls out of of my contacts list but I can't keep that on for long due to work and school purposes. Yes I can simply go to verizon and get my number changed but why should I go through the hassle of paying a charge and taking the drive and making the time and telling everyone I know about my number change. It's not something I should have to do. They do give me a call back number but when I call it's only a prompt and I haven't found a customer service line or an email address I can write to. more

Please note that this will not become an actual business; we just have to do some primary research to include in our business plan. 1. Do you prefer to buy your pet products (food, toys, accessories) from a major store chain or a smaller, more local business? 2. How important is name-brand pet food to you on a scale of one to five (five being very important)? 3. What kind of pets do you have? 4. Would you be willing to pay a little more for better quality products and service, or does the economy dictate that you have to budget now more than ever? 5. What are your thoughts on a doggie bakery? A photography studio for pets? 6. What would be a good, attractive theme for our store? THANK YOU!!! more

Resolved Question: If religion is just groups of cults, what is it that makes us good people?

I was on CNN arguing with some of the people on the blogs. I mentioned that I was an atheist, and they Christians freaking swarmed on me saying they wished I would go to hell, which I thought was ironic. And one mentioned that since I had no religion, I must be a savage with no morals. I answered that if the fear of going to hell is all that kept her form being a savage then she is pathetic... I do community service because I like to help others less fortunate than myself. I think that is the spirit of modern day Christianity and why it is so incorporated with politics and business. They use is as a cloak to disguise their greed and use it as a means to oppress and steal from the lower classes. Any thoughts? more

Resolved Question: To whom and how do I report a fake/scam business?

I recieved a letter saying I needed to update my vehicle warranty coverage from Service Protection Plan, Texas (envelope) Service Protection Direct, St. Louis,MO (letter). The letter shad my correct information expect wrong vehicle. I figured it was a scam then so I called to see if they would give me any information on how they got my information. I spoke with someone who answered the phone with a "Hello" instead of a professional company greeting. After I told her it was the wrong vehicle and proceeded to ask how they got my information, she cut me off and said it was a "mistake". I continued to try to ask how they got my information and continued to yell and tell me it was a mistake and ask me "Are you serious? Are you for real?". I hung up and called back to try to speak with someone else. I recieved another "Hello". I told the man that the customer service rep I just spoke with was very rude and I only had one question to ask. He asked me for my name and put on hold, only to connect me again with the same customer service rep who aswered the phone calling me by name and saying "So you ready to argue again?". Afterwards we engaged in a rage and name calling and I hung up only to recieve a restricted call from that same customer service rep on my line. How do I report this company and to whom do I report this company? There are others who've been affected by this and actually give them the money and they just move to another location and change the name. more

Resolved Question: How is Republic Bank getting away with such nonsense?

I've heard the horror stories about TaxBrain, TaxAct and Republic Bank. Sadly, I have fallen into their victim pool. See below. This is a letter I sent to the Federal Reserve, CNN and our local news channel. I filed my federal taxes through taxact.com this year. They are using Republic Bank in Louisville, KY as their third party depositing service. I have been reading several complaints online about Republic Bank. Since the IRS stated my refund would be deposited into my account Friday, February 5th, I decided to call Republic Bank to check on the status of my refund. The gentleman I spoke with told me that my refund had already been sent to my Bank of America account for deposit. I then called my Bank of America account representative and she told me that if the deposit had been sent, they would see it, and she didn’t. I then called Republic Bank again and explained the situation to a 2nd representative with their institution and asked him to provide me with a tracking number for the deposit and he told me tracking numbers don’t exist. After telling him I thought something strange was going on, he then told me that my refund was not sent to my bank, it was sent to the Federal Reserve, and that the Federal Reserve would be depositing the refund into my account. I asked him why I paid Republic Bank to handle the deposit if they were going to turn around and allow the Federal Reserve to deposit the money instead. He then told me that a new Federal law has been implemented this year and every institution that practices the same type of business has to send the money through the Federal Reserve. I was not satisfied with this answer, so I called the Federal Reserve. I left a message for a gentleman named Josh at the Washington DC office and I was very excited when he called me back. I explained my problem to Josh and he informed me that there is no such law that has been passed and that I needed to file a complaint with the Reserve. After I spoke with Josh, I called Republic Bank again and asked them to explain why they had lied to many so many times and to please tell me the truth about where my money actually is. I spoke with a supervisor named Robert and he told me that Josh at the Federal Reserve didn’t know what he was talking about. This kind of business is an outrage and Republic Bank needs to be stopped. It is my understanding that they were served a cease and desist order from the FDIC last year because of their pore practices regarding tax refunds. I really hope someone can help me and the other millions of people who are being affected by this bank.I Support Tax Brain: This has nothing to do with Tax Brain, it has everything to do with Tax Act and Republic Bank. This issue is completely separate from anything else. As for me having no understanding of anything, your are incorrect. I have a full understanding of all of it because I spent a full day on the phone with the FEDERAL RESERVE and my bank. Grow some intelligence please and thank you! more
