Internet marketing accounts for 23% of ad budgets

Almost a quarter of advertising budgets is spent on internet marketing, according to a new report.The E-consultancy Best Practice Guide to Managing Digital Channels has revealed that 23 per cent of marketing budgets in the UK are allocated to digital media, including search engine marketing, online advertising and affiliate marketing.This is up from 11 per cent of budgets in 2005, meaning that the average company has doubled its spending on internet marketing in the last few years, report author Dr Dave Chaffey noted.Commenting on the figures in an interview with E-consultancy, Dr Chaffey said that it is unlikely this will double again in the next three years as the figure of 23 per cent is an average that represents businesses at different stages of digital media adoption.However, he remarked: "For later adopters, their spend could and probably should double over the next three years, particularly with the economic climate encouraging investments into more accountable, direct response digital media like paid search."According to the latest Bellwether report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, spending on internet marketing is continuing to grow, despite budget cuts in other areas of advertising. more
