A former university professor has refused for a third time to testify to a grand jury investigating Muslim charities and businesses in Northern Virginia.
Former University of South Florida professor Sami al-Arian's refusal to testify during grand jury proceedings Thursday at U.S. District Court in Alexandria sets the stage for prosecutors to bring contempt of court charges against him for a third time.
Mr. al-Arian is in the 19th day of a hunger strike — his third in recent years — to protest his treatment.
Prosecutors say Mr. al-Arian was a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. But his 2005 trial ended in an acquittal on some counts and a hung jury on others. He eventually pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
Since then, prosecutors have sought his testimony for a related investigation. more

Business goes on despite the sadness surrounding John and Elizabeth Calvert's disappearance
Salaries and other business transactions were on hold at Harbour Town Yacht Basin after the disappearance of John Calvert, the marina's owner, on March 3. But employees and others involved in the business said legal arrangements have been made so that everyone should be paid starting Monday.
Other than that bump, things are operating as usual at the iconic Hilton Head Island tourist location, even as employees hold out hope that John Calvert and his wife Elizabeth will turn up alive.
"We are very close to getting salaries paid and very close to getting money for all the operations," said David White, Elizabeth Calvert's brother who lives in Decatur, Ga.. "The bottom line is: They are functioning, they will function much better next week, and they will all be paid."
John Calvert had a good business model in place that allows highly skilled general managers to operate on his behalf when he's not there, said Tony Gibus, manager of The Mariner's Club and a friend of the couple. more

Resolved Question: Can I get into Harvard Business School for an MBA?
My undergraduate degree in the U.K. was fair, I graduated with a second class, upper degree (which is about a 3.5 GPA) in mechanical engineering. However I don't think that I'll ever get into Harvard with that. Luckily, I'm starting a master's degree in the U.S. this year which may be a chance for me to redeem myself. If I am able to get a 3.8GPA or thereabout in my master's followed by a good five years of experience as an engineer and high GMAT scores do you think the likes of Harvard, MIT and Wharton would be willing to overlook my less than stellar undergraduate performance (which is a bit low due to my first two years at university)? moreResolved Question: What job is for me? What should I major in?
I am currently in high school and as college is quickly approaching, I am considering all majors to go into. I am a bright student and let me tell you briefly about my academics: 4.7 GPA (about) "Gifted Program" (GIEP) 250+ Community service hours per year (Trying for 300+) Advanced placement courses. In the top one percent of my grade. Personality, hobbies: Tennis player, USTA 3.5 rating, hope to be 4.0 when I graduate. Like to help people. Nothing in the medicine field, I hate blood and the human body, etc. Best in my math class, took 11th grade math courses in 9th grade. Outstanding leadership skills, etc. My gifted teacher thinks I should major in Public Policy at Cornell and then get an MBA at Wharton Acadamy (School) of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and go into Corporate Real Estate Development. I'm not sure if that's what I'm into though. I'm really artsy but I don't want to be an artist (I'm not that good), like arcitecture, job MUST require traveling to different cities, etc, salary about $100k starting, nearing $150k-$200k at peak. I do not know about maybe some type of international relations manager? I also like politics, not really law but I'm really good on the mock trial team and on the HS Speech League (forensics). So does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks, and If you have any ?s, I'll try to post additional details for you all. Thank you and have a great evening! -Ethan moreResolved Question: Do I count as an International Student?
I am a sophomore in High School and have lately been thinking a lot about colleges. I am trying to think of ways that I stand out. I would like to apply to a top business school like Wharton at U Penn. I was born in Northern Ireland and lived their for eight years and then moved to the U.S and am currently a permanent resident, and have been in the American school system since 4th grade. I'm a senior in high school, and I am considering a career in either business or corporate law. I really want to make a lot of money when I grow up (not to sound vain, but money really matters to me), and I would like a career that pays a high salary and is also something I would enjoy (I have therefore ruled out medicine). I really want to get either an MBA or JD from a top business or law school, but I don't know which to pick. I already got accepted in the wharton school of business at upenn as an undergraduate, so I don't know if that matters. What kind of track should I put myself on to get to the top of either law or business. THank you! moreResolved Question: Shot at Wharton or following business schools?

<<this question refers to a fairly old article, but it came to my attention as the author of the article has recently bought out a really silly new book: "The Empathic Civilization: The Race to Global Consciousness In a World In Crisis", so i Googled him and this article came up >> Jeremy Rifkin, a lecturer at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, accuses Americans in particular and westerners in general, of driving "death engines" that were responsible for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In a guest article for a newspaper, he wrote [QUOTE] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ""Katrina and Rita, then, are not just bad luck, nature's occasional surprises thrust on unsuspecting humanity. Make no mistake about it. We Americans created these monster storms. We've known about the potentially devastating impact of global warming for nearly a generation. Yet we turned up the throttle, as if to say: "We just don't give a damn." What did anyone expect? SUVs make up 52% of all the vehicles owned in America, each a death engine, spewing record amounts of CO2 into the earth's atmosphere. Shame on the United States of America and the peoples of other countries - we're not alone - who have put their personal, short-term whims, desires and gratifications ahead of the welfare of the rest of the planet."" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, do you drive a "death-engine" and do you support the author's business venture with Greenpeace and others to push forward proposals for hydrogen power? http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2005/sep/23/usnews.hurricanes20051 .. EDIT - @ Littlerobbergirl: All due respect, it says "death engine" in the article and even in the little bit of it that i quoted, so i don't know how you missed it. Try reading it again (especially this sentence: "SUVs make up 52% of all the vehicles owned in America, each a death engine, spewing record amounts of CO2 into the earth's atmosphere.) ;-) moreVoting Question: can i transfer to UPenn or Yale or stanford? (stat's are given)?
i now attend Brandeis University. I will be applying for junior transfer spots. I am primarily interested in those three schools (yale, UPenn, stan). As an international student i really dont fit in this school. the general lack of 'opportunities' for non-jewish student could be the main reason. also, i want more challenge. i came to US after 8th grade to start HS here. i had major english problem, so i couldnt apply to top notch schools (higher than Bran that is) due to low average GPA (tho the improvement is obvious). now i am as fluent as a native and i want more challenge. i majoring in econ right now. here are the stats: College GPA: 4.0 ACT: 32 composite (11/12 for essay, 36 for math) HS (IB program) GPA: 3.3 / weighted: 4.3 I am especially interested in Wharton business school. please give me some chances and suggestions Thank you very much moreResolved Question: What does it take to get into Wharton?
Currently, I plan on going to business school after I graduate. I am currently a freshman at Clemson majoring in Mechanical Engineering but I will have minors in economics and business. My GPA is about a 3.8 and will should remain above 3.75. What else does it take I am trying to start early and working toward this goal. I would like to attend either UCLA, Texas, Stanford, Wharton or Harvard for business school. That being said I am not picky and realize if I was offered a ticket to one of those I should hold on and not let go. moreVoting Question: i would like to work in business in switzerland when im older?

My sister is 46 years old and, by all practical measures, was sane until she was about 41 or 42. Then she stopped all contact with my mother first, then me. She wrote to our aunt and described apparitions and/or voices of our ancestors, who were concerned she was not religious enough. She put all family heirlooms in storage or gave them away then. She came up with crazy talk about how our mother had mistreated her...mind you, our mother has always been a loving and excellent mother. My sister said my mother had tried to kill her because she accidentally knocked over a dresser in her room, which must have hit my sister or knocked her over, when she was small. She insisted my mother always wanted her dead and still wants her dead. Finally, my sister had some strange relationship liaisons which she never discussed...she only said she met people online. One somehow found my e-mail address and attempted to contact my sister by e-mailing me, which was really bizarre. My sister was a top student, the salutatorian (2nd place) of her 700 person high school graduating class. Then she went to Yale and then, Wharton Business School, which I think is the top b-school in the country. She married a lawyer who died in 9/11, the World Trade Center. They had an autistic son together who was just diagnosed around 9/11. My sister coped with these tragedies quite admirably for several years. She had some life insurance and pension money, so she quit her job and started taking care of her son full-time. She founded a charity for autism. Suddenly, someone who had always cared about her family just appeared to go wacko. She calls up my mother periodically and rants. Once, she seemed to threaten her, so I attempted to contact my sister's therapist, to no avail. After that time, we found out her therapist has at least partial control of her son, but we don't know how or why. I am wondering if: A. her therapist could have brainwashed her in some way, B. my sister's illness could really be true and a normal progression of her life, or C. she has some physical ailment, say, which could bring on some psychosis. My mother's first cousin is schizophrenic. However, I am not aware of any other mental illness in our family. To clarify about her therapist and my nephew: the therapist actually has some sort of custody/ control of my nephew. My sister is not allowed in her own kitchen because my severely autistic nephew believes my sister tried to poison him. My sister uses a separate alternate kitchen within the house now and is required to by some agreement with the therapist. I don't know if the law was involved. That was the only information my sister gave us but she would not elaborate.alzheimer's isn't genetic, is it?? I believe it's linked to a virus.Interesting. Actually I just saw an episode of "House" which started me thinking. I don't know if my sister has symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, just other psychosis...it's tough to say and I am not a professional. But there was a woman with an excess of copper as well as liver disorder, who had symptoms of schizophrenia. I was just wondering if it was something like that. Good to know it's likely not schizophrenia. Don't know about post-traumatic stress. She was coping for so long, so well. It was a dramatic change. My sister is very mentally sharp, still. I feel like it's definitely not Alzheimer's. She doesn't seem fuzzy in any way. However I do worry a bit about brain cancer, because our father died of it. But there is nothing I can do, my sister won't talk to me. moreResolved Question: Where should I go to business school for an MBA?

I am a sophomore in a pretty respectable high school in CT, and i want to get into a very good business college, something with a nice Finance curriculum, since i want to go into finance ( I think thats best if i want to become an Investment Banker, right?). Anyways, i want to get into a good business college like The Wharton School, and i was wondering how i can prepare to maximize my chances of getting into Wharton. Also, Does anyone know the average GPA and SAT scores for people that got into Wharton, and other good business colleges too, or where i can find out that kind of info. I tried finding the stats for Wharton, but it gave me all of Upenn, not just Wharton. moreVoting Question: What GPA is needed to have any chance of getting into the top business schools?
Such as HBS, Wharton, etc moreResolved Question: What are some good business schools with finance to look at?
Hey, so I am freshmen at Coastal Carolina University. I live in New York and was attracted to the campus, weather, location, and it was one of the only schools I got into. I wasn't very motivated in high school. I was mainly focused on playing basketball instead of school. I also didn't really have any aspiring goals after high school. I didn't know what to do so I didn't work hard and my grades in high school reflect that as well as my SAT scores. I graduated with a 2.7 GPA and 460 verbal, 470 math, and 470 writing. 1400 total. Or 930 for Math and Verbal. After going to Coastal I found what interested me and became much more focused in school. I like finance and other subjects closely related to finance, but majoring in finance would be fine for me. I also don't feel like Coastal is a good school in term of academics. I feel like I am hurting myself if I continue to go to this school because I am now much more motivated and think I should be looking at schools that will give me more opportunities and help me more when I graduate. Some of my EC's are: -3 year varsity basketball player. Team Captain SR Year. -Volunteered at Boys and Girls Club for 3 years. -Customer Service Representative at a Supermarket for 2 1/2 years -Worked at a state park title "pool maintenance" for 3 summers. -Joined S.T.A.R. at Coastal. (Students Taking Active Responsibility) aka volunteering -Joined S.G.A. at Coastal. (Student Government Association) I just got my grades from the end of my first semester and got a 3.9 GPA and took 16 credits. Next semester I am taking 18 credits and hoping to achieve grades just as high and am going to work hard for them, obviously it's easier said than done, but I am hoping. I have been looking to transfer since about the middle of the semester just to go to a more serious school and a better business school. A lot of the schools require that you go to the university first and then if you perform well you might get into the business school. I kind of want to stay away from these schools for the obvious reason that if I don't get in I'm pretty screwed and might have to transfer or something again. I applied to SUNY Binghamton, Buffalo, and Albany, but not sure how good there business schools are compared to others that I could get into or if that even matters. Also SUNY's are much cheaper for me since I am instate. So what do you guys think I should do? I mean I'd apply to the top schools like Wharton, Ann Arbor, Stern etc.. but don't think I'd get into them considering my performance in high school. So what schools do you think I could get into and is it worth going to a top business school specializing in finance or maybe go to a SUNY and save money? I've been stressing and haven't come to any conclusions. Any help would be appreciated thanks. And sorry if I left something out I typed this once already and it didn't go through =( haha. moreResolved Question: how hard is it to learn a completely new language at 18?

I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I am a good student. When I say good student, I don't mean to brag, I mean a great student, especially compared to many other kids in my school. Currently I have an unweighted average of 97.48 and a weighted of 99.21, which is not the best in my grade, but it's up there. There are very few students in my grade that I consider smarter than myself, and I am in AP classes and participate in my schools selective scientific research class, which has been described as "the academic elites of the school". I know I have a while to go before I should start worrying about college, but my brother is a senior and is currently applying to colleges, and it has got me concerned about my future. I would absolutely love to go to Wharton of UPenn, but I just don't know if I have what it takes at this point. I take business classes as electives, I am in the DECA club, which is a business competition club, I will be in the Business Honor Society, among other clubs. I also am a member of the Italian club, and the Foreign language Honor Society, and I run track and cross-country year round, and I am on the Varsity squad. I also play the trumpet and guitar and participate in the schools symphonic band, marching band, jazz band, and wind ensemble. I am a Boy Scout, well on my way to Eagle, and I hope to achieve that rank before senior year. I know my grades aren't tremendously amazing, but I do plan on improving them over the next few years, and there is no doubt in my mind that I will do so. Any suggestions to what else I can do to help me out, but I need to start now in order to have it for the next two years. Thanks!!! moreResolved Question: 10pts!!! What now????
I just got accepted to the Wharton School of Business at UPenn; however, it looks like I'm going to end up with a B in Calc for my first semester. It's my only B but since it's in calc and wharton is so math oriented, will this result with my acceptance being rescinded? *oh ya, I just moved to a new school system this year and they weight my old transcript differently, so it's possible that this B will push me out of the top 10% even though I was in the top 5% at my old school moreVoting Question: public perception of the wharton school of business?
i just got accepted to wharton (business @ upenn) for undergrad, and Im getting really self-conscious. truth of the matter is, as shallow as it may seem, i do care about prestige. and I feel like princeton or harvard or cornell or the other ivies might sound more prestigious than wharton. and so i was wondering if the public perceives wharton as a joke or as a good school. thank you. moreResolved Question: Is banning hand guns the answer to lowering insurance premiums in the US?
Despite its status as an advanced industrial nation, the United States has some unusual characteristics. For example, while its health care system is the most expensive in the world, its citizens are neither healthier nor do they live longer than citizens in other countries. In addition, while the U.S. is considered among the safest countries, deaths from gunshot wounds are staggeringly high. In 2000, the U.S. recorded close to 11,000 firearm homicides and more than 16,000 firearm suicides. The European Union -- an area with a population approximately 25% higher than that of the U.S. -- reported fewer than 1,300 firearm homicides for the same year. In Japan, the number was 22. For every firearm death, there are nearly three gun injuries requiring emergency medical treatment. By conservative estimates, gunshot injuries cost about $4 billion a year in medical expenses. Parting with your gun could pull the US out of debt and increase the average lifespan 103 days (according to Jean Lemaire professor of insurance / actuaries at Wharton school of business). Or would you rather keep your gun even so? Sources: Annest JL, Mercy JA, et al. "National Estimates of Nonfatal Firearm-Related Injuries: Beyond the Tip of the Iceberg." JAMA 273:22 (1995):1749-1754. How can I be more independent?
I love my mother, I really do. It's just that I feel like I never got the same chance as other kids to learn and develop practical/social life skills. (I'm 20, in college near home, living at home) My mom was a single mother, as my father had passed when I was still a baby. She was so busy with work and friends that she never had time to teach me things. Which is totally understandable. I was an only child, had zero friends, and wasn't allowed to play outside, so I spent the majority of my time home alone. She never allowed me to play with puzzles/paint sets/clay, etc because it was "too messy" and too much of an "ordeal", so I learned quickly to spend all my time watching TV or drawing (with pencils only). She did everything, from dress me & pick out my clothes as a little kid, to even doing dishes. I begged to help and to learn, but I was just told, "NO, it's faster/easier if I just do it". Fast forward to my teen years, I was never allowed to learn how to drive, because my mom thought I'd just crash the car and die (either that or hit someone/thing else and go to jail). I was, and am, forbidden from studying abroad which is something I want to do so badly, if I even move out, she says she'll disown me forever (and she's done it to other family members, so it's not a hollow threat). I'm not allowed to go on rollercoasters, or learn how to surf (even though I do know how to swim, and other people had watched me and said so), when I DO happen to make a friend, I'm never allowed to go out with them unless it's in one of her "approved" neighborhoods and if I'm home before 8PM. According to her, only rapists and gang members are out after 8PM on weeknights. As a result, in life I am always at a loss when it comes to the most simple things, such as skateboarding, driving, or even opening a wine bottle. I have no other family, and no friends, as I keep losing the ones I make due to my mother's restrictions. I wish there was someone out there who I could pay to teach me these common sense skills! LOL She won't even let me apply to Wharton or Harvard business schools (and I have a decent shot at it), because she thinks I can't survive on my own. (I have a job, promoted to manager, and I'm doing well. I never had trouble getting jobs, past the resume stage). I bought a "How to Do Things" manual for basic survival skills and one for home skills. If I study and practice what's in those books, could that sufficiently put me up to speed with everyone else? I just want freedom and independence so badly... Let me know what else could help? Thanks!! :-) moreResolved Question: If I try to get a second Bachelor's degree, would I be at an advantage or disadvantage w/ High School Seniors?

At graduation time, if I have a -3.6 GPA -Two internships -A thesis paper published on a theory on immigrant entrepreneurship in America at different decades with statistical proof conducted in new york city (published in a scholarly journal) -Started and am president of a Management Skills Improvement club (wrote a few case studies with the help of faculty) -Started a philanthropy initiative raising a couple thousand dollars of money each year for inner city schools and volunteer program -Member of and write in the journal of an Emerging Markets club -Study abroad at Oxford University (Among other things I am still planning on doing, and job experience of 2-3 years- at a place that is still to be decided where I work diligently and dexterously) And hopefully, a GMAT score of high 600s or low 700s- right around the margin (based on practice tests) Major Hobbies: -Wine making at home (from crushing the grapes, to fertilizing and preserving)- I think I might go into a small business of selling personalized wines before I graduate -Horse Polo and riding (I attended a Polo camp in India as well) What do you think, roughly, are my chances of getting into a good MBA program. Some of the ones I am considering are: -Duke University Fuqua School of Business -Yale School of Management -Dartmouth College Tuck School of Business -Cornell University Johnson School of Business -Wharton at UPenn However, ones in the tier just below, such as UCLA are considered as well. Thanks! moreResolved Question: what are my chances of getting accepted into these colleges?
I worry about what schools i should apply for and i dont have a clue about where i stand, so i wanted to see what others think. I am currently a senior in high school. I have a GPA of 3.7 from scale of 4.0(weighted). That is about a 92.6 (weighted). I have taken AP US history and honors american literature during junior year. I am currently taking 3 AP classes (AP Spanish, AP English, and AP Calculus). I only have 70 hours of community service, which i consider horrible compared to many others. I am rank 8 in my class. I was in the national honors society last year. I have only participated in bowling, but had no awards and no leadership. I participated in track and cross country but i never finished them. I barely did any extracurriculars. I dont know if hobbies even matter because i do martial arts on my own because i learn from a personal trainer. I have breakdanced for a year, and i did hip hop dancing for half a year. These hobbies were all done on my own without attending any schools because i had people to teach me. My SAT scores are: 490cr 590math and 550writing and it was my second time taking it. I havent ever worked at all so i have no working experience. I was also a transfer student from another school where the grading system was in letters, so my GPA might not be what it actually is due to the inability to change the letters to numbers. I had A's and a few B's when I was in my previous school. I have been handcuffed once in middle school, but i do not know if it was considered an arrest because the lady at court told me she did not know. I was found guilty of shoplifting because the lady told me that if i admitted to being guilty, the file would be kept as a secret, and no one would have access to it. I have also been suspended in my sophomore year for cursing but it was an in-school suspension so i dont know if it was actually considered a suspension. I transfered after sophomore year and i entered my present school during junior year. I think that i barely have any chance in any of these colleges. Can someone tell me where i stand as a candidate? I dont know if it helps but i am asian american and of chinese descent. 1. UPenn (Wharton) 2. New York University (Stern) 3. Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper) 4. Cornell University (Johnson) 5. Boston College These schools are probably out of my reach, so i dont know if i should even apply to these schools. I really want to attend these colleges, so is there anything i can do as of now to make myself stand out? If not and they are out of my reach, can anyone tell me what other schools or universities offer good undergraduate business programs because i am deciding on majoring in business. I do not just want what is good, but what my best possible chances are. It would be nice if anyone can answer quickly because a lot of applications are going to be due soon so i have to get going. Thank you.I also wanna add: University of Virginia (McIntire) and Pennsylvania State University (Smeal) I might consider the following... Univ. of Maryland College Park (Smith), Boston University, Georgetown University (McDonough), University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University (Whitman). moreResolved Question: Good business law schools to go to?
I always wanted to go to Wharton ever since, i don't know, 4th grade? I have good grades, etc. Even though I have a lot of the requirements, I wanted to know what other good schools there are out there like Wharton, if I don't make it in :( Also, I know it's really hard to get into the school, and I wanted to know what you have to exactly do to get in, or at least improve your chance to get in. Please give me information such as: - grades, even though it's obvious it needs to be 4.0 or higher. - community service - SAT scores - background information - experiences/internship - sports - etc. Thank you so much! moreVoting Question: Hey chances at Cornell University?

Hey - Im currently a soph in highschool and I want to further my education with a business degree. Im thinking about Haas, Cornell, University of Chicago, and Wharton. Im probably going to end highschool with a 3.96~3.98 GPA, taking all Ap and Honors classes. My class rank is currently 1 out of 729. I am expecting about 2150~2250 on the sat, with definite 800 in math. I got 800s in Sat II Math, World History Sat, and hoping for one in Chemistry. I will also have over 500 dedicated community service hours in one organization with leadership qualities through it. I am dedicated to two clubs, being officers of both, and will eventually be president of both. I would like to know the acceptance rates of each of those colleges above, and my chances. I really need information on Haas because I cant find much. Also if you can recommend GOOD business schools, money is no problem, its just acceptance.i get around 2150 - 2250 on practice tests moreResolved Question: Penn: single or dual degree. M&T?
I am applying Early Decision to the University of Pennsylvania. In the future, I plan on having a career in business. However, I am not sure if I should only apply to Wharton or should I do a dual degree with the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Wharton School of Business by doing the Jerome Fisher Program in Management & Technology. So basically I have 2 questions: 1. By being in this program, will my workload be heavier? Or do the credits get split up? 2. Will I have a better chance of getting into this program or to the Wharton School of Business. (My grades aren't perfect 4.0 material like other candidates but I do have a lot of leadership positions and clubs with some unique hobbies that set me apart) moreResolved Question: Need an opinion about college school?
so im in a dilemma. ive been fortunate enough to been accepted to 3 schools for GRADUATE studies: University of Southern California for Elec Engr University of California, Irvine for Elec Engr University of Pennsylvania for Systems Engr I am from california and i went to UCI for my undergraduate studies in EE. now i am figuring out what I should do for grad school. I made a list of key features whether good or bad UCI: -Cheap, ~20k for the program -I know the faculty and some students. Easier to make friends and i know the school. -I can commute from home to save money. USC: - Better name than UCI. Nationally known (partially to its football). Best engineering rank. - Can possibly commute or take train. But nonetheless its 40 miles from home so i know the area alright and i have a car. - Expensive, 100k for the program UPenn: - Probably more worldwide known than the other two being an Ivy league. - Expensive, 100k - Far from home. Don't know about weather, living habits, etc. -Major is systems engr. Curriculum is 1/2 business which is REALLY what I like. Some will be taken at Wharton. So I have talked to many professionals and most tell me that I should go to either UCI or USC. They said that if I want to work in California after, which I do, I should stay in California since UPenn's network is mostly east coast. on top of that USC and UCI would be economically cheaper in terms of having a car and knowing the area. on top of that i have a current internship i can keep. they said work experience is the most important thing looking for jobs. so its logical to stay in california. BUT heres the dilemma. i want to eventually do an MBA and go on doing business or sales. maybe even entrepreneurship. If I go to UPenn, I am simply buying their brand name. Will it help in admissions to a MBA program saying I've taken classes at a top tier business school like Wharton? Also, say in business or sales, does it help to have come from a well known name? I am looking for a long term return on investment. Any comments/opinions welcome. For your reference: USC National Rank ~ 25s, Engr Rank #7 UCI National Rank ~ 40s, Engr Rank ~40s UPenn National Rank #4, Engr Rank ~30s moreResolved Question: this is my aim and present situation... help?
im basically frm india pursuing b.com in chennai university.. my dad has a well established business in India and i aspire to make the products fit to be exported globally........... I hav spoken to few persons and now i have two options... Do an MBA or MS in management in abroad ( uk or us) work there for 3-4 yrs and then come back to india and take over my dads business.. or Do an MBA in india and simultaneously start a new venture whilst studying.. Apply my techniques and tweak it.. get it well established.. Then after studying work for sometime and merge mine and take over my dads business... The advantage of doing mba in abroad is that we will have global exposure.. and a few say that in US which is highly affected by recession, is the perfect market place to do MBA disadvantage is u might get over exposed for current Indian market and later have to come down to understand it... next is u ll be studying the local companies over there which u might not be familiar with.. Advantage of doing here in India is v get lot of new contacts who will be big shots in the future and can be in constant touch with them to establish ur business.. and the study of a developing market is very useful as u can predict a few things.. Disadvantage is that u might get under exposed when considering long-time.. As i said earlier.. My aim is to introduce a lot of products and meet the global standards and start exporting making my dads business a global empire... my extra curicular activities are musical jingle composer, skilled in maya animation, skilled in internet marketing, skilled in MS office.. have spent 6 months in e-marketing if that could help.... Any help????????? Since i am basically physically challenged, working before a post graduation is not appropriate for me... I ve searched in the internet and stumbled upon European School of Economics which offers courses in Paris , London , New York , Florence and Rome .... I think the course MS in Management suits me cause that offers the following courses - • Modern Business Research Methods • 21st Century Advanced Business Structures • Organisations and their Cultures • Managing for Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility • Decision-making • Management of Resources and Operations • Entrepreneurialism and Leadership • Globalised Information and Communication Systems • International Project Management • International Business Management • Human Resources Management • International Strategic Marketing • Research Methods and Modelling Techniques • Internship Programme (3-months) These subj are relevant to my dream... But Wharton School Of Business also accepts students from the world with 3 yrs degree... and stanford also the same... But they ask for work experience... at the same time it can be excepted in certain circumstances.... as i said my ailment prevents me to work before further studies... This is as far as i ve collected... Pls help!!!!!!!!! moreResolved Question: What are my chances of getting into a top MBA program?
I am a 23 year old female planning to apply to MBA programs for Fall 2011 entry. I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis (top 12 university in the US) last year with a Bachelors degree in Biology and a minor in Business Administration. My overall GPA is about a 3.4. I recently took a diagnostic GMAT and got a 680. I have a project management position in the Federal Government (in science/healthcare). Since I plan to apply for Fall 2011, I will have had 3 years of work experience before entry. I'm particulary interested in MBA programs that have a concentration in Healthcare/Biotechnology management. If I score over 700 on the GMATs, what will my chances be of getting into a top MBA program? I know I'm probably not competitive enough (given my mediocre GPA and less than 5 years of work experience) to gain admission into the best of the best schools (Harvard, Columbia, Wharton, etc) but what are my chances for Duke (dream school), Carnegie Mellon, or Vanderbilt? Are there other schools suited for my credentials and career interests? Any help will be much appreciated! moreResolved Question: Does The East Coast Respect Stanford University School of Business?
I intend to go to Stanford University for business school. Its my dream school but, I dont want to work in California (SF Bay area or LA). I want to work in New York City. When I go to apply for jobs or through recruiting, will the companies in NYC respect my Stanford Degree as they do Wharton or Harvard. I say this because in NYC, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Wharton & MIT are GOD. But, in California, its the same except for Berkeley, Stanford & UCLA. moreResolved Question: What professional field should I major in?
I'm a current student at the University of Texas at Austin and hold 3 years more before I graduate. I thought I wanted to do Pre-Med soon to realize that the natural sciences aren't as appealing as I imagined. I'm not great at math either. In turn, I've (always) liked the adventurous aspect of going into business. In fact, I like business... I'm not in the business school yet since I'm unsure of what to major in. I would like to eventually get the BBA from the McCombs School of Business... I dream of then going to the Wharton School of Business and earning an MBA in either Finance and/or Management. As of today, looking into the future, will business or medicine strive? Clearly medicine will always be around and it will improve, but with the upcoming Health Reform, a doctor's salary will virtually be cut in half and well it takes much of the merit in that, given the opportunity cost of years a doctor gave up in order to study... Now, I like the idea of Investment Banking! Its hard, suicidal, and stressful...however, the idea of (hopefully someday) landing a job at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, or another firm, as an Associate I-Banker and working up the corporate ladder seems pretty nice. Plus the fat paychecks they get are just a big WOW. Many say that I-Banking is gone mostly due to the Market Crash in 2008, but I believe that as long as money, businesses, and people who want to get richer exist, demand for I-bankers will exist. I'd give the market a few years before its up an running smoothly again...Plus, I love to travel a lot and wear a tie and suit! ...hopefully someday open up my own company. So what should I do? Medicine or business? If med, which area of concentration? And if business, which concentration has HIGH future potential (with amazing pay). I would like concrete answers. I've had enough of the whole "its up to you to decide...whatever makes you happiest...you shouldnt focus on the money...yadda, yadda, yadda...." Thank you. moreResolved Question: Do I have a shot at ivies?
I really want to go to a top school and would like to know my chances at each of the ivies on a scale of 1-10 but i filled the misc section mostly with respect towards the wharton school of business at Upenn. Im a senior that recently moved and am thus having a hard time figuring out my stats at my new school, but the following is a list of where i stood at my old school and the two should be fairly similar: I have a high school GPA of 4.2 weighted, 3.92 unweighted My class rank is 14 out of 345 ACT composite=32 SAT superscored composite=2130 SAT Math1=690 SAT Literature=700 SAT US History=700 I was commended as a national merit scholar for the PSAT and am a National Hispanic Scholar. During my junior year i could take 3 APs and i only took two. I got a 3 on the US History and a 5 on the English Language. This year I'm taking 3 APs and Spanish IV. I volunteered 135 hours for a local Congressman and was then hired by him as a field representative. My officer positions include: Olympus club class representative 10th grade, Olympus club treasurer 11th grade, FBLA vice president 11th grade, after moving i started a new chapter and was FBLA president and founder in 12th grade, DECA vice president 11th grade. The activities i was involved with include: AcDec, quiz bowl, FBLA, DECA, NHS, History Day, Model UN, Olympus, Stock Market Game, National Finance Challenge (3rd in state for 2 years), and National Economics Challenge (3rd in state for 2 years, 1st in state 1 year which put me at 35th in the nation), and young Republicans. Misc: I've visited Penn 3 times and sat in on an econ course at wharton, am from a state that sends under 10 kids a year to Penn, and took math courses over the summer so I could take AP AB calc before graduation specifically because wharton wants kids to have calc, and I have a fairly well known alumn writing me a rec letter. I plan on applying to Wharton ED. Please rate my chances on a scale of 1-10. I am graduating this semester with a 3.4 GPA. My school is ranked around the 80s by the US News for its undergraduate business program. I double majored in Accounting and Finance. My goal is to get into a top 10 MBA program, not necessarily Harvard, Stanford, or Wharton, but Kellogg, Chicago Booth, MIT Sloan, and Columbia will do the job. Now, what can I do right now to land such an admission? I am contemplating a couple of options: 1) One option is to get an MSF (Masters of Science in Finance) right now and then work for a couple of years, then go back and apply for the MBA; 2) Another option is start working right now and then apply for the MBA. So, would an MSF + 2 years of experience be better (or same as or less advantageous) than 3 years of experience? Please tell me how can maximize on my chances on getting into a Top MBA? Would passing 1 or 2 levels of the CFA help? Also, what kind of work experience would help me the most? I can land a job in a Sovereign Fund but also have the change to work in PWC on the advisory side. Which would be better? Are there other better types of jobs that can help out more? What are the preferences of admission committees? (During this time, I will work hard to ace the GMAT and get a score above 680.) A little history about me: I am attending Colorado State University as a Sophomore after leaving the US Navy four months ago with four honorable years of service. I am 24 years old. Since I began college, I found there are many opportunities, resources, and directions that can help me pursue a career in investment/corporate finance. My goal is to find employment/internship with a “Top-Ten” company or a Wallstreet firm. My options: 1. Double major with Finance and Computer Information Systems (additional 39 credit hours): This was suggested by a career advisor at Colorado State University. However, may cost me an additional year at college. (2.5 yrs as opposed to 1.5 years). I am not concerned with the money, but whether the effort is worth my time. 2. Finance degree with a certificate in CIS (21 additional credit hours). This allows me to add more communications courses and more economics and accounting courses to help me become more competitive. 3. Finance degree with no certificate and simply add a load of additional personal development courses, such as: advanced speaking, writing, negotiating, statistics, and additional accounting and economics courses. 4. Finance with a minor in foreign language. This was suggested by a family member involved in finance. However, this program will limit me from taking additional courses, in that, each language course is 5 credit hours apiece and every week day. Feel free to recommend something else, but please explain why you are recommending that route with consideration to making me more marketable to potential employers while being competitive as well.
