Games hurdles for Beijing businesses
Many ordinary business operations have been curtailed, not just in the capital but throughout China. No transportation of chemicals, for instance _ causing mayhem for the fertiliser industry, which depends heavily on Chinese inputs.
Foreign businesspeople have mostly given up on getting visas for China until well after the Games. Numerous conferences have been cancelled as a result.
The Shanghai-based marketing-focused website Access Asia points out that a growing number of brands manufactured in China these days require independent factory inspections to tick off the working conditions under corporate social responsibility templates before orders can be confirmed. But the inspectors can't get visas, so the contracts are left dangling.
Access Asia says: ``While Beijing may think the Olympics is worth all this, the fact is that the West cannot move Christmas to late February. more

What small business can bank on 3
In the final part of our series on the support banks offer to small businesses, we look at some of the products that may help you, as a small business owner, to import and export goods. Forex, import and export South African businesses have been busy in recent years sending goods back and forth across our borders. Steven Matthews, the chief executive officer of FNB International Banking, says there has been a huge growth in imports. They grew 33 percent in 2005/6, while exports expanded 25 percent in the same period. Generally, Matthews says, it is not difficult to do business in other countries when it comes to making and receiving payments. "South Africas banking environment is considered First World. It is very sophisticated," he says. With Swift, an international payment system, it is relatively easy to make payments to a business in another country. more
Food company could cut 700 jobs
More than 700 workers at a Lincolnshire food factory could lose their jobs after managers announced plans to stop production at the site.
Northern Foods said its Fenland Foods plant in Grantham would be "mothballed" from August.
The decision came after Marks & Spencer withdrew production of its Italian ready meal range from the factory.
Northern Foods said it would carry out a 90-day consultation process and support the 730 workers affected.
'Credit crunch'
Andy Worth, regional officer of the GMB union, said: "This is tragic news for the workers and their families, especially as there is very little alternative employment in the area.
"We will do all we can to mitigate the impact of this announcement.
"The credit crunch is now beginning to hit home. more
Metro One receives delisting notice
The company's stockholder equity as of March 31 was actually a negative equity of nearly $1 million. Metro One has recorded a net loss every year for the past five years.
Nasdaq has asked Metro One to provide a plan to achieve and sustain compliance with Nasdaq listing requirements, including a time frame, by June 6.
Metro One's original business was providing enhanced directory services to customers of mobile phone companies. The company achieved peak revenue of $258 million in 2002, and a net profit of $26.1 million that same year.
The company's business declined as cell phone companies increasingly automated enhanced services, or sought offshore services that were priced lower than Metro One's. The company now provides inbound and outbound phone calling service, along with data and analytics and other related services. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of college rankings and how are they determined?
I am really really troubled by these rankings. For instance, when I was looking into grad schools, I chose a school in Australia that was ranked as one of the top 100 schools in the world according US News and The Times ranking. But when I started there, I had no clue how that school could possibly have such a high ranking. The buildings were run down, the professors didn't seem qualified and 99% of their students were from Asia and didn't know any English, but paid 10 times the tuition. Yet they allowed them to study there. There were no admissions tests and no internal English tests that the school required. It works like this for most universities in Australia and is big business. Yet many of these schools are in the top 100. I only made this stupid decision to study there based on these stupid rankings I was looking at before and was misguided. So I have no clue how these rankings are determined and am wondering if it's more of a marketing scam to earn money. moreResolved Question: Which undergraduate business ranking chart is best? I am currently applying to business schools and I would like to apply to at least one online program. However, since I run the risk of employers frowning on an online degree, I would like to be sure that the program is both high quality and prestigious (i.e. I'm not going to U. Phoenix). Unfortunately, I cannot find any organization that ranks online programs. Ideally, there is something out there similar to the US News and World Report rankings.
