Undergraduate International Business Schools Questions asked

Resolved Question: Christian's opinion on Brigham Young University?

Hi I am an international student currently studying at a top 15 business undergraduate program. And the accounting program I am studying at is top 10. However the tuition and costs are heavy burden for me so I am thinking about Brigham Young University, where they have all strict rules and student codes (but i can live with perfectly, except the no coffee no tea rule) and very attractive tuition rate, and a very good accounting program that I think might be comparable to the one I am in right now. However job placement is the thing that I consider the most. I am not religious. But recently I have been going to church with my host family, they are really nice christian. I always wanted to pray to Jesus when I am down. But I am too scientific and I have never ever been religious for the past 20 years of my life I doubt I am ready for baptise or similar level. I haven't asked my host family because I think it would be impolite as I heard Christians don't like Mormons. So if I am to become a Christian, will it be wrong to attend BYU? (This is Question 1 :) ) Meanwhile I know there's a lot of christians here in the US. One thing I worry that because there are so many christians it might be inevitable that a lot of the job recruiters are christians. If a student graduating from a Mormon church school interview with the christian job recruiters. Is there a possibility that they will deny me because I potentially may be mormon? Are there many companies that go to the Brigham Young campus to hire? (these are Question 2 & 3) more

Resolved Question: Why University of Illinois (champaign Urbana)? Also, How personal is their admissions process?

Okay, so I am currently a junior in high school and I am researching universities and looking into the best schools, financially and by the quality of the education. I am originally from Illinois but I have been going to high school overseas in Milan, Italy since I was a freshman. It has been a great experience but I'm not quite sure if I will fit into the U of I community because of my diverse background and experiences. Although, I would love if it were possible. My mom recieved both her graduate and undergraduate degrees from U of I (champaign urbana) so she has been pushing me to apply there. Although she has told me once or twice that it is difficult to get in, and she's not sure I am able to. Honestly it was a bit of a blow to my ego but I would like to know what my chances are, and whether the admissions process will take into account the many extracurricular and other personal activities I have dedicated myself to. Below is a taste of my personal achievements during HS: I am currently taking the International Bacchleareaute (haha that is spelled wrong fyi) or the IB. This is like AP and is an accelerated program. I am taking HL math, HL English, and HL Chemistry although I do not plan to go into a Chemistry-related major. Since my freshman year, my semester grades have included all A+s and As except for this past semester I recieved 2 Bs. Our school does not include B+s or A-s because the IB does not grade this way. I received two Bs in Chemistry and Spanish. My courses include Economics, HL Math, Business Studies, HL English, HL Chemistry, Spanish and Italian. I am interested in entering the Business field or possibly communications although I have not quite decided. To continue this already pretty long description, I am in numerous extracurriculor activities and really dedicate myself to all. I have been in student government as Publicity official for my sophmore year and junior year, plus I am running for President this spring for my senior year. I am a member of NHS (national honors society) and have planned many charity events in conjunction. I am also treasurer of Prom Comitteee, and also do MANY sports. I was basketball captain my sophmore and junior year, and volleyball captain my junior year. I also play soccer. This takes alot of my time and I really enjoy particpating in everything. I won the most outstanding english award for 10th grade and most improved in physics last year as well. I am hoping to recieve both English and Economics this year and I am currently particpating in an international marketing competition with the well known company Media-Saturn. Overall, I just want to know if U of I will take into account many of these parts of my life that I have worked so hard to incorporate. I am almost positive I have left many things out as well. I do habitat for humanities and am going to travel to Romania in May as well as I have done a personal fundraiser for St. Judes. I know U of I has a great club diversity but I also just want the best school that will help me succeed. ~Thanks* Oh and I also do MUN (Model United Nations) and go to a conference in Dublin, Ireland everyyear...... more

Resolved Question: International Business major who wants to go to Medical School?

I am currently in my junior year as an international business major. I have about a year and a semester to go before I obtain a degree in international business. I have a passion to go into the medical industry, and be a doctor. To my understanding, if I take the core undergraduate courses after I graduate, (chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, etc.) I can then apply to medical school, regardless of what I received my undergraduate degree in. Does this sound possible? Will I be scrutinized for having a degree in international business, as opposed to something more medical, like biology? Thanks, Brian more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to transfer from a UK university to a US university in the middle of an undergrad degree?

I'm currently reading management at City University London (Cass Business School) , which is one of the top ranked in the UK for their undergraduate management program. I have an SAT score of 2210. I studied the IB diploma at an international school and although I have a good final score in my IB diploma my high school GPA is low (3.1). However my grades at university have been excellent so far and far better than what I had at school I'll finish my first year at City University soon and I would really like to transfer to the US for the remaining portion of my degree. Would it be possible for me to do so? And also will I lose one year and have to repeat the first year or can I join the second year of a management/ business major degree in the US ? more

Voting Question: Can I take a pharmacy master degree after the college where i'm majoring in biochemistry?

Well, I'm a bit confused...I'm a freshmen at EC college where i'm majoring in biochemistry and minoring in Business and management. I wanted to attend school of pharmacy after my high school but i couldn't because i'm an international student and my scholarship covers only curriculum at undergraduate college. Therefore, i didn't have much opportunity. If it is a big deal for me to obtain a pharmacy degree, do you have any other suggestions what could i consider as another choice :) tnx more

Voting Question: i am currently an undergraduate accounting major what should i pursue in grad school?

there seems to be a variety of opinions and ideas on this and was just wanting to find more information, maybe some of you are more familiar or have gone through the process so i'd appreciate any help! MBA, MSA, MST??? or should i consider something else? i do not have any relevant accounting experience yet if that makes a difference, i will be interning in the Spring, but grad school is a sure thing for me whether i do it now or later. perhaps i should look into information systems/computer technology? international business? thanks any advice is helpfulyes here in florida we can take the cpa exam with an undergraduate degree, but we are still required to complete another 30 hours (grad school) to receive the actual certification. so tax lady, you think it is best to get relevant work experience before attending grad school? thanks for the info about the MST, i am feeling like a Masters in Accountancy would probably be the best route for me more

Resolved Question: How difficult would it be to start a law firm?

I will be graduating in the spring of 2011 with two degrees in International Business and Finance/Economics; also, I will have a minor in Spanish. I have always had the intention of going to law school; however, I have found myself questioning what I would like to do after, God-willing, I graduate from law school and pass the bar. I plan to move back home which is a town of nearly 40,000 people to start my own law firm. I have held different internships and made multiple connections with different lawyers/judges in that area. Furthermore, I have been wondering if it would be wiser to simply work for one of these lawyers, with whom I have already built a relationship or try to hop on board with a larger law firm in a nearby city. While I prefer to fancy myself as an entrepreneur, I have been questioning myself as to whether or not the benefits outweigh the difficulties. While boasting is not exactly my forte, I do understand the concept of "busting ***" and I have maintained a 3.93 GPA throughout my Undergraduate career, thus far. Another obstacle I have found myself unable to hurdle is the fact l will most likely not be well-capitalized after law school--and this may present a problem considering there is a significant amount of overhead involved in starting any business. Another concern I have been having, which may seem, chronologically, backwards, is whether or not attending an elite law school is absolutely essential. Now, don't get me wrong, but I just do not see the purpose of drowning myself in tens-of-thousands of dollars of debt just to get out of law school and hang my own shingle. I could, potentially, attend my home state university's law school for a considerable amount less than, say, a nearby private school. Also, if I were to attend my state school, I would still be a viable candidate for one of the law firms in which I have previously interned--or any other law firm in my hometown, for that matter. And, lastly, I have been mulling another option over in my mind for a few weeks now, and I would like to get some feedback. I have been considering working full-time, since both of my degrees and minor are very marketable in the general workforce, and taking law school part-time. This would allow me to earn some sort of capital which I could invest in a 2-3 year CD while I was in school, and then invest in my law firm after I pass the bar. However, I would be finishing an entire semester behind my fellow peers. Also, I fully understand the stress involved with such a heavy workload, but, once again, I fully understand the concept of "busting ***." You get no where in life by idling lethargically. I understand that this is hardly a question, and I apologize for that. However, any feedback would be greatly appreciated, as I am sincerely torn at this juncture in my life. Thanks, and cheers! more

Resolved Question: Which is the Best Work Experience to get into a Top MBA program?

'm graduating this semester with 3.36 GPA. My school is ranked around the 80s by the US News for its undergraduate business program. I double majored in Accounting and Finance. My goal is to get into a top MBA program (not necessarily HBS or Stanford, but the likes of Kellogg, Columbia, UCLA, or even Stern and USC would be just great). Now, assuming I get a high GMAT score (670+), which I would invest alot of time to attain, what kind of work experience would help me the most to get into a top MBA? I have two options, either to work for 1) a Sovereign Wealth Fund; or for 2) PwC on the financial advisory side. I intend to work there for about 2 - 3 years. Many people told me that a Sovereign Wealth Fund work experience would be prestigious, unique, and surely differentiate you from other applicants as admission committees are looking for diversity in backgrounds to bring in a different perspective in class (what are the odds that there is another international applicant having the same background in an SWF?). However, others told me that PriceWaterHouseCoopers is very prestigious and highly reputable firm in financial advisory (and big 4 in actg), and admission committees at the top schools still hold notions that working for a big consulting firm is the best you can bring to the table along with I-banking. So, which of these backgrounds would help me the most (taking into consideration my undergrad) to get into to a top MBA? What might impress an admission committee more? more

Voting Question: I'm looking for a university that matches my interests/grades?

-I want to major in international business, and minor in languages. -I'm looking for a 4 year undergraduate school, preferably in Florida or California, but thats only a preference. -Looking for a small school in an urban or suburban setting(private school preferred, like around 2000-5000 undergrads) -I have a 4.0 GPA(top 10% class rank) -My SAT scores are not great, but above average. I am not good with standardized testing. -I would like to study abroad if they have a program for that(Would love to study England, Italy, or Japan) -Ivy League schools would be a little stretch for me to apply to, however I am looking for a very good school close to Ivy League. I know that my choices are very narrow indeed, but if you have any ideas please share them to me!!SAT scores, taking another one in 10 days so I hope they go up, but my scores right now are : Reading: 530 Math: 610 Writing: 560 more

Voting Question: What should I major in if I want to enter Business School?

I plan on attending the University of Washington, and I eventually want to get an MBA at their school of Business. I want to get a degree in International Business and want to work with China. What should my undergraduate major be? I was considering minoring in China Studies. more

Resolved Question: JD or MBA? Would like input!?

So @ my school, we have a program where if you have a 3.9 GPA or higher and declare your major in your sophmore year, you can get your masters degree and bachelors at the same time, granted you spend an extra year as an "undergraduate" so to speak taking graduate classes. My school while rising in the ranks (t60), its international studies department is top 8 in the country. I'm quadlingual and am almost certain that i will be getting into the field of international business or consulting down the road as i have worked and interned over the summers, and done some minor deals on the side. These languages happen to be Mandarin, English, Hebrew, and Spanish so its very well rounded....and more importantly, i've been making connections in the far east for quite some time building my network. I'm going to be 23 when i graduate and while i have alot of time ahead of me, i am warry of staying in school too long and not getting started with my career. When i graduate in a year, i'll have the following: Minor in Biology Bachelors in International Studies with Concentration in Economics and trade Masters of Global Finance and Economic Integration I guess this is where the road forks...i do have a keen interest in both of these paths...and i'll play the pros and cons 1.) JD - Pros? Plays well to my strength, no need to dable with work experience, i'll graduate when im 26. Cons? slightly unusable in its state although if i got an LLM in international law...i would be in business. 2.) MBA. Pros? fits my current completed coursework beautifully. I've already been focused on these types of courses for years. Cons? Requires 2 years of work experience which while no bad rears an ugly economic reality. I'll be 27 when i'm done with it! Any Ideas? I mean i realize in the grand scheme 1 year is not a big deal, but i am at somewhat of an impasse. Thoughts? I've been researching those JD/MD programs, but i really don't want to be in school until im almost 30...Too much. CN: Quadlingual INTS M.A. wants to get good "combo" degree...help! Would most likely want to get into the "trade" of trading biotech properties and contracts overseas.top 10-15 wharton etc... more

Resolved Question: Should I take out a student loan to pay for a better University?

I have two options: 1) Attend University #1 ( Florida International University for undergraduate business studies) with no need to take out a student loan. or 2) Attend University #2 ( University of Miami, which happens to be an excellent school). However, the problem would be that I would have to take out a student loan to be able to pay for my tuition. I am not sure if I should go ahead and take out a loan to go for option two( which is a top 50 business school), or take option one without having the need to take out a loan. Can someone please advise me on this? P.S. I am planning on transferring to one of these universities as a junior, after I receive my Associates from my communiity college. more

Resolved Question: Why does a US college (CUNY) need Complete Secondary School Records (Statements of Marks) for EVERY year?

So I'm applying for a CUNY college. This is one of the requirements for international students (which I will be): "Complete Secondary School Records (Statements of Marks) A complete record (all years) of your high school/secondary school education is required. Educational records in a language other than English must be accompanied by an official word-for-word translation on business letterhead (see English Translation Guidelines below)." http://web.cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/outside.html ^ How the heck am I going to find reports from EVERY year of high school? Resolved Question: MS in Marketing (ex. Northwestern IMC, NYU Integrated Marketing)?

Hi, As an international student interested in marketing (mainly Brand Management) but who has no work experience, I was hoping to go for a masters in marketing before getting a MBA later in my life. The only TOP schools (the ones with reputable MBAs-at least top 25) with a MS in marketing I found were NorthWestern's IMC and NYU's Integrated Marketing program... Does anyone know any other MS in marketing programs from a top ranked school? In addition, I would like to know about the reputation of the two programs I mentioned above. I heard NW's IMC is a respected program in the marketing industry but compared to top MBAs (w/marketing concentration) I wonder how much it fares...As for NYU's program, I have not heard any feedbacks at all (both positive or negative) and I wonder if it is known in the business industry at all. *As a side note, the only MBA I might get right now is Cornell's accerelated MBA. I'm graduating from Cornell's undergraduate business program and they have a special option of going straight to Johnson but I was hoping to go to a much higher ranked MBA in the future instead of attending Johnson which is not that famous for marketing anyways... Hope I could receive a lot of informations from you all! Thx! more

Voting Question: If I have a Bachelor in Environmental Science can I get a Masters in Environmental Planning?

In the fall of 2009 I'm beginning my first year as an Undergraduate. I'm double majoring in Environmental Science and International Business. However, I have been thinking a lot recently and I came to a conclusion that I want to be an Environmental Planner. In order to become this I need a Bachelors in Environmental Studies, Bachelors in Urban/Environmental Planning or Masters in Environmental Planning. I'm really worried now because my school only offers Bachelor in Environmental Science not Environmental Studies. Will I be able to pursue Masters in Environmental Planning if I only have Bachelor in Environmental Science? OR should I consider transfering to another college that has Environmental Studies as a major? (the only problem is this college that I'm about to attend is giving me almost a full scholarship) Please help!!!!! I can't fall asleep..I'm so worried more

Resolved Question: Will I have an edge with a Masters degree when applying to Medical School?

I am currently entering my sophomore year in college. My major is finance. I am also on the Premed track, so I am taking all the courses that are required to apply to med school. In my junior year I plan to apply to a program offered at my school for undergraduate students interested in international business. The program would help me complete a MAIB (Masters in International Business) degree in 2 years, meaning my undergraduate career would last 5 years. Following the 5th year, I would like to enter Medical School. I am not doing this program because I think it would give me an edge while applying to medical school. I really enjoy taking business classes and am happy with my choice in major. I would love to complete a masters degree in International Business. However, I want to be a doctor and would like to work in the field of medicine. I was only wondering if the Masters degree would help my chances of getting into medical school. On the other hand, would it show a lack of interest in the science field and end up hurting my chances by backfiring on me? * I would be completing all the pre-requisites for Med School and taking a few of the higher level science related courses such as Genetics, Endocrinology, and Microbiology The other concern is: When should I take the MCATs? Usually regular premed students would take it in April or August of their Spring semesters. However, because I will not be heading off to med school until a year later than my peers, should I be taking it a year later as well? more

Hi, I am working on developing an international student resume sample for our career center and I am looking for a university in India (that is popular and recognizable to our Indian students) that has a bachelors degree in Business. Has anyone heard of Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University? They have a Bachelors of business management degree. Is this school well known? does it have a good reputation? more

Resolved Question: anyone could help me edit my scholarship essay please?

the essay is due this Friday, which is very very important to me for applying scholarship. i have been looking for many of my friends to help me edit, but no one is available. could anyone can help me? i would be really appreciate. As an incoming freshman to college, I started considering my goal in the future. My mother inspired me to enter the medical field. She used to a doctor, by observing her helping many patients to regain their health. I wish that I could also help spread joy and comfort to others, just as she did. My volunteering experience at the local hospital also strengthened my belief. I come from a traditional Chinese family, we moved to the United States three years ago due to my father’s postdoctoral training. My mother has a part-time job at a supermarket. Therefore, our monthly income could only cover the basic housing and living expenses. I understand how expensive the medical school is, and my family’s income cannot cover majority of it. I have to take account of my family’s financial position, whenever I decide on college choices. Although I choose to go to the relative cheaper state university this fall, the tuition still is a problem. This is why I would like to apply to this scholarship. I realized that it was not easy to achieve my goal, becoming a successful doctor, so I try my best to challenge myself in various ways. Academically, I have been taking all the possible advanced placement courses in my school, such as biology, chemistry, calculus, American history, economics, humane geography, psychology, and statistics. Moreover, I helped my teacher create a syllable for the new AP psychology class by choosing the textbook, study guide and supplements. Eventually, I placed fourth place in psychology subject at the UNO district literacy rally, and will represent my school at the state competition. Additionally, I was selected to be the most outstanding chemistry student of the year and four-year honor roll student. Besides working hard academically, I am also an active member in many extracurricular activities. In the school, I am the vice-president of international culture union, encouraging more ESOL students to participate and share each other’s unique cultures. As the secretary of French club, I help arrange every meeting and organize the community service hours. Furthermore, I tutor math during lunchtime four times a week at the National Honor Society, as well as plan school-wide events in the student council. I also take part in some academic-related activities, such as science Olympiad, Mu Alpha Theta, and the engineering club. Outside the school, I volunteer at the hospital, work at local business, and participate in a pathology mentorship. I am not sure whether I am the most deserving candidate to receive this scholarship, but if I had the honor to be rewarded, I would use this scholarship money for my undergraduate school in order to pursue my medical career in the future. more

Resolved Question: What Should I take for my Undergraduate?

I took SAT and Had a 1640 out of 2400 before high school. Now I will retake it after years of AP classes. I estimate about 2100 score and want to become a lawyer, preferably in the Business field. I don't want to deal with issued like murder, violence, and divorce, more of things like merger, oversight, and verification and approval. What Should I take for an Undergraduate (I'm thinking something like International Business). What should I take and where should I go assuming I have up to 40 grand a year to spend. more

Resolved Question: 4.0 at Community College. Could I get into a better school?

Okay, so i have a 4.0 at community college in Texas and wanna transfer. The problem is, I'm limited to in state public schools because of financial reasons. I wanna major in International Business. I could go to UT, but i would be a year behind because I do not yet have Calc. ( I would spend a year getting calc, and then do an internal transfer into the business school) I could do that but I really dont want to. My only other public university options with that major are Texas Tech, San Angelo State, and Sam Houston State. Would I be doing myself justice by going to one of those three schools, possibly Tech? Does it really matter what Tier your school is? I mean an undergraduate degree is the same whether you get it from OU or Harvard? What do yall think?I didnt take Calculus because Math is my weak point and I had to start remedial, but I'm done with everything else so... more

Resolved Question: Would someone be kind enough to proofread my scholarship essay?

The first step in creating my future is a proper education. For my generation, a college education will be essential, if not necessary, to find a secure, stable career. In the past, anyone could find a job, college education or not, but as more people were able to afford college education the standards in the job market increased. Some sort of education is highly preferred, even in brainless jobs, such as cashiers or food servers. To have a stable future, I need to at least obtain a bachelors degree. After graduating from High School, I plan to get a bachelor’s degree and double major in International Studies and Spanish. I would like to attend Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Though it is farther away from home, I believe they have an outstanding study abroad program. They were ranked #1 in the nation for the percentage of undergraduate students studying abroad in the 2008 Open Doors report. I have been invited to study abroad with a group of select students my freshman. I am also considering Miami University and Ohio State University as they are both close to my home and also offer many great study abroad and internship opportunities. I plan to study abroad or internship abroad in Japan or Spain, to better understand the world we live in and to become culturally diverse. I believe that interning and/or studying abroad will be great experiences to have, to help prepare me for a global future. It is essential for me to get a college education, because without one, I will never have the chance to work in the international field. I will never learn how to proficiently speak a different language or know how to properly conduct myself in business meetings or interviews. Working in a large business or for the United Nations will not be possible with at least a bachelor’s degree.Yet, if I do receive a college education, all of my dreams will be possible. Four years, living independently in college, would allow me to get accustomed to being responsible for myself. Not only will I receive an education, but I will also learn many life skills. With a degree, I would be a strong candidate for any job. If I learned a foreign language, I would become an even better asset to any company. But none of this is feasible without receiving and education. The only thing keeping me from achieving my goals is that I am having financial difficulties. I live in a single parent home without the aid of child support. My father is unemployed and my mother only works part-time as a clerk in Meijer’s. Though my family would like to send me to receive an education, they cannot financially afford to send me to college, even though I have already been accepted. I hope to receive enough grants and scholarships to be able to pay for most of my fees.I would also like the committee to know that I am aware of my extensive absences throughout high school. Because of my parent’s divorce and our financial difficulties my sister and I suffered many hardships, and missed many school days. My junior year I also became very sickly during 3rd quarter because of the stress of my family situation, and spent much of my time with doctors and at the children’s hospital. I believe that I am deserving of this scholarship because I have demonstrated that I have leadership skills, determination to achieve my goal, and the desire to pursue my major. I also understand how much an education can affect ones future. As the first person in my family to attend college I hope to set an example for my younger sister so she can see that we do have the chance to better ourselves. I believe that I have just as much right as anyone else to receive an education, and should not be handicapped because my family’s situation.***I think i need to place the 2nd to last paragraph somewhere else, but I am not sure where. I do need to have this note added in there because I missed a lot of days my junior year. I also think that I don't have a good (or any) conclusion....any suggestions? This scholarship money is for a 4 year university not a high schoolThanks for the advice, its part of the essay requirements lol, but it did sound like I already got it. Resolved Question: Best Accounting or Finance Professional exams?

Hi, I'm an international student currently taking a gap year after finishing my first year of undergraduate BSc Investments (Cass). I'm keen on enrolling myself to one of the professional courses so that I could at least earn a qualification before deciding I want to complete my 4-yr degree. Could anyone recommend any professional accounting or financial courses and institution I'm eligible to attend full-time classes? I just know that CFA only allows final year student to sit for the exam and London School of Business and Finance. Other than that, I have no idea what's the difference between CMA, ACCA, ACA, etc. I enjoyed studying economics and financial accounting as well as quantitative methods and company valuation. I look forward to working in the UK and Asian countries. Much appreciated for your help. more

Resolved Question: What is a good university for graduate study in international affairs or relations?

I am about to receive my undergraduate degrees in international business administration (with a focus on economics) and Spanish. I think that I would like to go to graduate school to study international affairs/relations, but that's about all I'm sure of. I'm especially interested in Latin America. I wouldn't be against studying outside of the U.S. or taking some of my courses in Spanish. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I'm from Europe and want to study in the US.?

Hi everybody, As the headline says, I'm from Europe (Denmark to be more specific), and I have successfully finished and graduated 12 years of education (high school) in 2005, and I am thinking about going to start my undergraduate studies (Bachelor degree) in the states. I have traveled a lot during the last years, and am currently working on a Saudi Arabian prince's private megayacht to save up money for my education next year. However, I am not too sure about where to start before applying to a college/university in the US. - Should I apply for a community college and first get a touch of how studying would be in the states? -Should I try to go straight into a business school in the states, since the bachelor that I want to pursue is withing the business area? (e.g. BA in Business administration, E-commerce, management, entrepreneurship) - or should I perhaps try to get started on an internationally recognised bachelor degree back home (e.g. BA in International Business) and then try to transfer to an american institution of education and continue my studies there instead? I am currently 22 years old, turning 23 in April next year, and I am beginning to feel a bit stressed about education since I really want to get started. However, I do not want to enroll in any education - I wish to get an education that allows me to go international. I am registered to do my TOEFL and SAT I test in January. Any advice? What should I do. Thanks in advance people, DanielEDIT: Or perhaps should I try some summer schools or university preparation courses to try and get at touch of how it is to study in the states? more

Resolved Question: Can one attain success by attending an unreputable public school?

I am currently deciding where to go to college and was looking for a few outside opinions. My possible career aspirations include being a doctor, patent lawyer, or politician. I've narrowed my college choice down to two and they honestly couldn't be any more diametrically opposite. The colleges are Columbia University in New York and University of Hawaii Manoa. Columbia is obviously one of the top schools in the country, but I feel as if it is to much money for undergraduate education. Will Hawaii provide an education that is reputable and rigorous enough for me to my goals. I've done a lot of research, so I'm looking for people who have either attended Hawaii or are very knowledgeable in this area. P.S. I have no desire to do international business or international law.thanks for the quick response. Despite Hawaii's third tier ranking I've noticed that many of the professor come from top ranking universities including cornell and oxford. A feat many public school cannot boast. Does this create any reputability for the school or is it, as I would imagine, completely overlooked.to the second comment. I've spent countless hours thoroughly weighing my options and this is a highly informed decision. I would go to UH manoa for the cultural experience along with a decent education. From what I've read many of the worlds wealthiest people went to small unreputable state schools. Although no one is guaranteed into Columbia, I feel as if I'm a strong candidate with a 1550 SAT and 4.0 GPA, as well as Leadership positions and community service in many clubs. Many people keep saying that Columbia is the obvious choice, but I feel like if I worked at it, I could be just as successful (and a lot happier) going to a laid back school like Hawaii. more

Resolved Question: McGill versus Concordia business?

So I would like to do an undergraduate in International Business and am wondering which between McGill and Concordia I should go into, I know I have the grades to get into both, and I know the John Molson School is really good at Concordia but McGill does have the reputation... I would also like to take part in a student exchange which school is the best for that too? more

Resolved Question: In your opinion, is it a good idea to do major in something you ...?

In your opinion, is it a good idea to major in something you are good at in undergraduate school and then get a graduate degree in something that will get you a job you want? I am strongly considering majoring in math when I go to college. I am very good at it and it will be much easier for me to graduate with a high GPA, but I don't want to be a math teacher or anything of the sort. I am also considering going to graduate school afterwards and getting an MBA or a graduate degree in International Business. I don't really want to do either of these things in undergrad. Does this sound like a good idea? With a high GPA in college, I could get into a good graduate school much easier more

Resolved Question: MBA, masters? What should I do after I finish my undergraduate degree from college?

I am just finishing my BA in public relations and Spanish, and i am wondering what to do after I graduate. I am in my third year of college, but I am graduating early due to AP and CLEP credits from high school. I do not have any work experience, other than three internships I have held during college. Is there anyway I can get an MBA without work experience? What else should I do instead of an MBA that I can do straight out of college. I currently attend ASU, but am willing to go to any school. I have a 3.9 GPA, and I am interested in marketing, international business, and business management. HELP please! more

Resolved Question: whether it is wise for me to transfer or not?

I am an international student who currently study in michigan state university. I transfered from the university that is in my home town to michigan state university a year ago, and 34 credits have been transfered to michigan state. Now, after one year of study in michigan state, i get a 3.92 Gpa. I am considering whether it is wise for me to transfer again or not. I have a couple of concerns, and i really appreciate if you can give me some suggestion. I want to major in business, and the business college of michigan state rank #23 in the U.S. So, michigan state has a pretty good business college, and some programme like supply chain management, and accounting has a really high ranking in the us news and world report. Do you think it is wise for me to transfer again to some prestigious university like UC berkeley or UCLA? Some of my friends told me that my undergraduate degree doesn't matter unless i am able to transfer to IVY LEaGUE schools. Graduating from UCLA has no difference from graduating from michigan state university especially michigan state university has a couple of very good business programme. Second, i want to look for a job after graduation, and i currently major in logistics, and i am more interested in finance. Do you think i can get a better job easily by graduating from ucla or uc berkeley instead of michigan state? the third is that as an international student, english is not my first language, though i am a smart student.business curriculum in UC berkeley is much harder than the business curriculum in michigan state? Because competing with a lot of talent whose first language is english is a big challenge for me. Can you please give me some suggestion about the difference in course difficulty between michigan state and ucla or uc berkely? Do you think i can graduate from UC Berkely or UCLA with a good grade if i can gain admission to those universities. What can a prestigious university give me that an ordinary university can't? IS it woth for me to transfer again? Because the 34 credits that are transfer from the university in my home town might be wasted if i choose to transfer. i would really appreciate if you can give me your precious suggestion.well, tank you for your suggestion. I meam compared with graduating from MSU with an excellent GPA, Do you think i can get a good job much more easier by graduating from prestigious university such as ucla berkeley, or u of michigan with a fair gpa ? more

Resolved Question: Can I get into Top 10 Business Undergraduates?

I've posted already about universities, but this time I'm really getting down to it and choosing which ones I should apply for so I'm going to put most of my academic record here, and hope you guys can help me out? It would mean a lot. I really would love to get into someplace like NYU Stern. Okay so, GPA = 3.7 (fucked up freshmen year) But, did the IB program. SAT = 2200 (760W, 720M, 720R) ECAs French Honor Society (1 Year) Choir (3 years including senior, do I put that on as 3?) Peer Mentoring Soccer (4 years including senior year: Varsity 3, JV 1) - Represented School in international tournaments 3 years. JV Soccer assistant-coach. MUN (2 Years) Volunteer Work 2 years of teaching English @ A blind school 2 years of building houses in Laos 1 year of serving as interpreter at Paralympics. Extra Skills ABRSM Violin level 6 Fluent in 5 languages Can communicate in Sign Language 3.7 is my unweighted GPA, 4.5 is my weighted. And I'm ranked #4 in the class so just barely 10% since I go to a small school. Thanks lots for your help, I hoped to make up for my academics with the other aspects. But ... yeah. more

Resolved Question: How should I prepare for an MBA program?

Hi. I just recently graduated with a BA in Government (Political Science) and I have decided that it might be a good idea to get an MBA. I know that I want to concentrate in International Business, but the problem is that I didn't take a single business course in college. Also, I haven't had any math since high school. I was thinking about taking a couple of math and business courses at the local community college while also working and volunteering. I also looked into maybe getting an associate's in either business administration or international business so that I could have a basic foundation in the field. With all that being said, I am just a little confused as to whether or not this is a good idea. I don't know if going back to school at a community college will help me in my quest for an MBA. Does this sound like a good idea or just a waste of time and money? I am in desperate need for some insight seeing as though my parents are of little help (neither went to college and have very little knowledge of higher education), and the counselors at the community college are not helpful at all. They just tend to look at me like I am a raving lunatic when I explain my case. Also, one final question. Is an associate's considered an undergraduate degree? I found this exciting internship opportunity in my city with the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Commercial Service, but it is only open to undergraduate and graduate students. Would I be eligible if I pursued an associate's? Thanks for any help in advance! more

Resolved Question: Is it better to get your masters immediately after undergraduate, or to work first?

I'm having a really hard time deciding what to do when I graduate in April. I will have a B.A. in Communication Studies and a minor in International Business and about a 3.3. I also have some semesters of statistics courses. I would like to get my M.A. or M.S. someday, but I'm not sure in what, nor I'm not sure from where. However, I don't know what I'm going to do after I graduate with my degree. I was thinking about working for a while to get a focus down and then getting my Master's degree. However I hate the thought of working some nasty entry-level job as well. I don't know what to do. I have NO idea how I would afford graduate school while paying car insurance and other costs as well. What are the pros and cons to getting a master's degree right away? What are your suggestions for me?Another thing to add is that I have worked in the Admissions office at my University, I don't want to go to graduate school at my current University. I've also worked in the News and Communications office at my university and I've studied abroad and done a marketing in ternship. I also like learning at college, but the thought of getting a job in the real world excites me. However I don't see myself working in the business world the rest of my life because I get bored with jobs very easily they're just not fulfilling for me. And I like to learn. more
