Bostonian of the Week: Dr. Esther

And you know I want to have an entrepreneur and go to a gala event or I might want to walk in the park and there's one man I have that does something I like. And so I did this so I could guarantee them. I wanted people to feel safe.

When you're out on the town with one of your Dream Men, do you get a lot of reactions? You know, they used to just look at my chest. ‘Cause it's, you know, not bad. [laughs] And now they're just looking at the picture! It's weird! [laughs] But you know, they're looking. I'm hoping eventually it will be so branded that you'll be able to know that I'm with Jack. But right now you have to actually read the text on the back to know who Jack was. I've come out with four Dream Men. The fifth is actually waiting to launch, but I have many more. But I'm going slow because I want to see what the folks out there are looking for. more

Undergraduate Business School Rating Questions asked

Resolved Question: Christian's opinion on Brigham Young University?

Hi I am an international student currently studying at a top 15 business undergraduate program. And the accounting program I am studying at is top 10. However the tuition and costs are heavy burden for me so I am thinking about Brigham Young University, where they have all strict rules and student codes (but i can live with perfectly, except the no coffee no tea rule) and very attractive tuition rate, and a very good accounting program that I think might be comparable to the one I am in right now. However job placement is the thing that I consider the most. I am not religious. But recently I have been going to church with my host family, they are really nice christian. I always wanted to pray to Jesus when I am down. But I am too scientific and I have never ever been religious for the past 20 years of my life I doubt I am ready for baptise or similar level. I haven't asked my host family because I think it would be impolite as I heard Christians don't like Mormons. So if I am to become a Christian, will it be wrong to attend BYU? (This is Question 1 :) ) Meanwhile I know there's a lot of christians here in the US. One thing I worry that because there are so many christians it might be inevitable that a lot of the job recruiters are christians. If a student graduating from a Mormon church school interview with the christian job recruiters. Is there a possibility that they will deny me because I potentially may be mormon? Are there many companies that go to the Brigham Young campus to hire? (these are Question 2 & 3) more

Resolved Question: Does this advertisement for my University's Summer Internship program sound discriminating?

Cal State University, Fullerton' Summer Internship Program Application is misleading and sounds discriminatory towards students of higher income. You let me know. This was sent to my school email. Read It: Attention: CSUF Students Information and Application The Sales Leadership Center 2009 Summer Internship Program (Version: 5/20/09) The Sales Leadership Center at the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics, Cal State Fullerton, is pleased to announce an exciting summer intern program. Overall Description Students selected for this 2009 program will receive an 8-week paid summer internship working 20 hours per week at a pay rate of $12 per hour . The internship will consist of training (approximately three half days) by The Sales Leadership Center and the opportunity to work at a “host company” in need of your talents. Number of internships available: 30 Who is Eligible? The program is being directed to undergraduate and graduate students at Cal State Fullerton. Because the internship is centered on sales and marketing internships, we believe many of the applicants will be from the Mihayho College of Business and Economics. However, it is open to all CSUF students. The program is being offered in partnership with the Orange County Summer Youth Employment Program and as such there are certain additional guidelines: •Interns must be age 16-24 at the time they apply for the program. •Applicants must be able to provide proof of legal right to work in the U.S. There are a wide variety of Right to Work documents that may be used. Further information is provided in the Application section below. •Applicants must fall within certain income guidelines. Again, further information in the Application section below. A COMPLETE APPLICATION WILL CONTAIN THESE THREE ITEMS:•Item A: Completed OC SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM APPLICATION •Item B: Completed 2009 SLC SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATION •Item C: Your resume Item A: OC SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM APPLICATION Instructions to access a copy of the application: 1.Go to: www.ocsummerjobs.org 2.Scroll down the page and click on “APPLICANT” 3.Click on the words “Click here for the application form” 4.Fill out the application and print out Or, simply go to: http://egov.ocgov.com/vgnfiles/ocgov/Community Investment/Content/SummerYouth/OCSYEPApplication-final.pdf Eligibility There are two types of eligibility that the program requires as set forth by the OC Summer Youth Employment Program. Right to Work Eligibility There are several ways to establish Right to Work Eligibility. Many are described in the opening section of the application itself. Additional information is available at: http://egov.ocgov.com/vgnfiles/ocgov/Community Investment/Content/SummerYouth/I-9.pdf If you have any questions regarding RTW eligibility, please feel free to call 714-567-7528 OR TDD 711. Income Eligibility The OC Summer Youth Employment Program is geared toward students who have some level of financial need - typical of many CSUF students. If you live at home with just your parents, your household income is $1,000,000 per year and your allowance is $1,000 per week, there will likely be a hurdle with regard to income eligibility. However, if you’re like most CSUF students, you’re probably “scrambling” to make ends meet. Here are several examples of students that would qualify: •Students that are receiving any kind of financial aid •Students that live on their own •Students that are financially independent There are many other examples of students who would meet the eligibility guidelines. If you have questions, please contact us. If you are not quite sure if you meet the eligibility requirements, we would encourage you to error on the side of applying. When filling out the questions regarding income on the application, please: •Be truthful. •Do NOT exaggerate or overstate your income. While several factors are considered, a useful reference point is the set of guidelines on the following link: http://egov.ocgov.com/vgnfiles/ocgov/Community Investment/Content/SummerYouth/IncomeGuideline more

Resolved Question: Hourly rate for a part-time, live-out nanny?

I am a 24 year old graduate student with my teaching certification for k-6. I have an undergraduate degree in psychology with emphasis to teaching and child development. Currently, I am working as a part-time, live-out nanny. I work 3 days a week (Mon-Wed) usually between the hours of 7:45-4:45pm. Upon hire I was only looking after a 10 month old baby girl. As a unfortunate turn of events took place, this child was diagnosed with epilepsy, forcing me to go between hospital and home for 3 months, along with looking after their other daughter (8 yrs) overnight. I now have to administer medication in the mornings as well as monitor her behavioural activity for signs of on coming seizures. Upon hire, my responsibilities were to only look after the baby's needs which included things like feeding, changing, bathing, laundry, cleaning up after and keeping happy. Additional jobs included getting the 8 yr old off the school in the morning when she was home (split custody), as well as taking the garbage/recycling out, loading and unloading the dishwasher and light vacumming and tidying of the house. Now however, 5 months into the job, I am training a new puppy, cleaning up it's messes that have been left for me. I'm washing family dishes, folding family laundry, cleaning up after family messes around the house. I'm organizing the recycling, working unfixed hours. I'm not informed of when the parent will arrive home, and often are asked to work additional hours without notice. The father of the child is currently unemployed and hangs around the house on a daily basis, leaving me to feel uncomfortable having to entertain him as well. The mother owns her own business, however sometimes spends days upstairs (i.e.sleeping, playing on the computer or watching T.V). while I tend to her child. I have now been asked to create a filing system, fill out important forms as best I can, organize mail, organize a garage sale, and keep the family organized and up to date with responsibilities, bills and house maintenance. She would like me to organize her family photos, maintain scrapbooks etc. With the summer approaching, I will have the addition of the 8yr old to look after majority of the summer. She is a gifted student requiring a lot of stimulus activities to keep her busy and satisfied. What do you think is a good hourly rate to ask for? I live in Canada, and am looking out for my best interests as I feel I am being taken advantage of. Thanks for your help more

Resolved Question: With the cost of tuition skyrocketing is it worth going to college?

Just for reference this question is coming from somebody with a BSE, a MSE, will have another MSE at the end of next April and will be attending Med School for his MD. However, after talking to many undergraduate students and hearing that the in-state tuition cost at a public University (University of Michigan) is at $8500/semester (not including housing, books, etc...) I was stunned. This is about double what I was paying when I started school back in 2000. With the economy in the shape it is in, and many parents unable to help their children as much as before, how can the Universities justify continuously raising the rates of tuition? I understand state funding has dropped a percent or two over the decade but does that justify a near doubling of tuition? How about not building 2 new billion dollar biomedical complexes in order to keep tuition at an affordable rate? Seems like every time I turn around a new parking lot for administration and professors are popping up. But let the poor student pay the bill? I mean, this is a PUBLIC University, not a private one. I look at public schools like UCLA which keep IN STATE tuition at an affordable rate but here at Michigan we get a nearly $25,000/year bill to be an undergrad along with our 20% unemployment rate. Obviously for degrees like Engineering, teaching, business and degrees leading to Law, graduate, and Medical degrees are worth it. But if you are going to get a degree in English to be "educated" but have to take out $50 to $70K of debt is it worth it in the end if you end up making as much as you would have just out of High School as a server or in retail? Maybe you make a couple thousand more a year but you have the joy of paying back those loans? Seems like the Universities have been able to successfully plant my generation with the idea that "you NEED a college degree" at all costs. I'm just waiting for 20 years from now to see the backlash of all the students who went through the rigorous amount of work put in for a degree that doesn't pay back the loans needed to obtain it. I'm getting to the point of telling my neighbors back at my parents neighborhood not to send their children to college unless they know they are going into a particular field because it simply isn't worth it. Yes, education is great but at some point money is a factor. And if you can't afford to pay for your child's education due to the tough times, they are better off not taking Uncle Sam's loans to get a degree that they can't use after it is all said and done. I really feel some people are just not built for schooling required for the practical degrees (by practical I mean in today's world with rising tuition/loans and a degree to allow you to pay them back). They are better off just not enduring the debt and just working right out of high school. So much for America educating its' children. Looks more like a scam to me as Universities are ultimately a business and they have done a wonderful job of marketing their message since we were in elementary school. Any opinions?Typical college freshman. Something is long, don't bother reading. And of course you can't put a "price tag" on experience, however may I propose a question? Is mom/dad paying your bill or are you? It's easy to write off the cost when it isn't coming out of your pocket. more

However, their initiative doesn't mean they are the best leaders. The study also found narcissists don't outperform others in leadership roles. Narcissists tend to be egotistical types who exaggerate their talents and abilities, and lack empathy for others. The researchers stress that narcissism is not the same as high self-esteem. "A person with high self-esteem is confident and charming, but they also have a caring component and they want to develop intimacy with others," said lead researcher Amy Brunell, a psychologist at Ohio State University at Newark. "Narcissists have an inflated view of their talents and abilities and are all about themselves. They dont care as much about others." She added, "It's not surprising that narcissists become leaders. They like power, they are egotistical, and they are usually charming and extraverted. But the problem is, they don't necessarily make better leaders." Born leaders? The results, which will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, come from three studies, two with students and the other with business managers. In one study, 432 undergraduate students completed surveys that measured various personality traits, including aspects of narcissism. Then, the students were put in groups of four and told to assume they were a committee of senior officers of the student union. Their task was to elect next year's director. Results showed that students who scored higher on one dimension of narcissism the desire for power were more likely to say they wanted to lead the group. The narcissists were also more likely to say they did lead the group discussion and more likely to be viewed as leaders by the other group members. Another dimension of narcissism the desire for attention was not as strongly linked with leadership roles in the groups. Shipwrecked island experiment In a similar study, more than 400 students, placed into groups of four, were told to imagine they were shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. They had to choose 15 items from the ship that would best help them survive on the island. Individuals who scored highest on the power dimension of narcissism again showed the most desire to lead the group discussion, rated themselves as leaders, and were viewed by other group members as the leaders. To rate leadership abilities, the researchers compared the 15-item lists with one prepared by an expert who has taught survival skills to the U.S. military. Turned out, narcissists did no better than their less self-centered counterparts at choosing survival items. A third study involved more than 150 business managers enrolled in an executive MBA program at a large southeastern university. The managers were grouped in fours and told to assume the role of a school board deciding how to allocate a large financial contribution from a fictional company. Two trained observers monitored the group discussions, finding that the MBA students who rated highest in narcissism were most likely to emerge as group leaders. The results held even when other personality traits, such as self-esteem and extraversion, were taken into account. Narcissists in society Brunell said she believes the results apply to many parts of life, from the politics of presidential races to Wall Street. "Many people have observed that it takes a narcissistic person to run for president of the United States," Brunell said. "I would be surprised if any of the candidates who have run werent higher than average in narcissism." Wall Street traders could also have a high dose of narcissism, she suggested. "There have been a lot of studies that have found narcissistic leaders tend to have volatile and risky decision-making performance and can be ineffective and potentially destructive leaders." Brunell does hedge though, saying that not all troubles in Washington and Wall Street can be b more

Resolved Question: How can I best spend my time as an undergraduate to increase my chances of acceptance to Yale SOM MBA?

Hey, I'm about to be a freshman at the Kelley School of Business majoring in finance and entrepreneurship. Besides getting a mid 700s on the GMAT, and having a solid few yearsof work experience once I'm out of undergraduate, what should I do as an undergraduate student to ensure my chances of getting into the Yale School of management to get my MBA? Can anyone speak from experience? Additional Details Just to add to the specifics, as people asked me what kind of school Kelley was: the Kelley School of Business ranks in the top 10 business schools in America according to Businessweek, and is #11 according to U.S News (tied with Cornell). It is also ranked #7 in the nation for finance and #2 for entrepreneurship. It is one of 3 b schools in the nation to have all its programs ranked in the top 20. Resolved Question: Know of any good Ph.D. programs in Finance?

I'm extremely interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Finance and I'm trying to find the best rated school where I actually have a good chance of getting accepted.
