Display of strength through unity
In the business arena, mergers and acquisitions are commonplace; not so in the realm of business schools. Deans around the world will therefore be watching closely how events unfold in the UK's Thames Valley, west of London, as Henley, one of Europe's best-known management colleges, merges with the business school of one of the UK's strong academic universities, Reading.
When the two become Henley Business School on August 1, it will be the merger of a largely unknown but academically rigorous university department with a high-profile but mature management brand. The good news is that the relationship will be hugely symbiotic: Henley brings with it a portfolio of MBA degrees and executive and corporate programmes; Reading's strength is in undergraduate and specialist masters degrees. more
Business cutting back on staffing: NAB
A survey has found more businesses are reconsidering their hiring plans because of an economic slowdown.
National Australia Bank's quarterly survey shows a sharp drop in business conditions over the three months to June and the bank's chief economist Alan Oster says plans by businesses to employ more staff are rapidly declining.
He says that means competition for staff is becoming less intense and is now predicting the current 3 per cent growth in employment will slow to about 1.5 per cent over the next year.
"The slowdown has been sufficiently large in profits and trading that employers are starting to say, 'Well look we don't need to hire as many people'," he said.
Business confidence for the June quarter fell four points to -8, which is its lowest level since the economy was emerging from the 1990 recession. more
Business big shot: Klaus Wübbenhorst
He graduated with a degree in business administration in 1981 from the University of Essen. He also obtained a doctorate from the Technische Hochschule, Darmstadt. In 2005, Dr Wübbenhorst was awarded the title of honorary professor by Friedrich-Alexander- University in Erlangen-Nuremburg.
GfK has about 9,300 employees working in 115 operating companies in more than 100 countries, but, despite its international presence, insiders say that the group remains "very German", with strong ties to its native country and its roots.
The company was founded in 1934 by Wilhelm Vershofen. The company contines to use the motto of its founding father - "Let the voice of the consumer be heard" - which it says is the foundation of its success.
