Drumming up business for businesses

A s Carol Hobson Thole was preparing to launch her business last year, she sought advice on marketing.

She found it through the Small Business Development Center at Cabrillo College in Aptos. With the assistance of a marketing consultant, Hobson Thole found ways to get the word out to potential customers without investing a lot of money.

Until she went looking for help with her business, Hobson Thole didn't really know that such services existed.

Six months later, she is serving as interim director of a Small Business Development Center herself. And she knows that low awareness levels about its resources will be a challenge.

Hobson Thole, a former business and computer instructor at Hartnell College with a management and human resources background, took over last month at the Small Business Development Center at Hartnell , following the resignation of director Elza Minor. more

Harvard Business School Introduces Executive Education Program on Maximizing the Value of Intellectual Property

BOSTON - Harvard Business School (HBS) announced today that it will offer a new Executive Education program aimed at developing effective strategies for transforming intellectual properties into commercially viable assets. Called Strategies for Protecting and Monetizing Intellectual Property, the program will be held on the School's campus in Boston on July 27-30.

"In today's highly competitive global economy, it is essential that companies have a clearly defined legal and business policy for maximizing the value of their intellectual property," said Professor Josh Lerner, faculty chair of the Harvard Business School program. "This new offering will provide executive participants with actionable strategies to improve their organization's competitive position in the marketplace."

The program explores the critical interface between the law and business strategies and addresses the growing importance of intellectual property. more

Strange Bedfellows Form Advocacy Group to Push Health Care Reforms

The AARP, along with the Business Roundtable, the Service Employees International Union and the National Federation of Independent Businesses, have formed Divided We Fail, which aims to see Social Security strengthened; make affordable, quality health care available to anyone who wants it; make prescription drugs more affordable; create incentives to get people to save for retirement, and expand job opportunities so people can keep working as they get older.

"We came together around a set of principals that we believe should be part of any kind of health care, financial security reformand we are willing to say that we will deal with the details later," said Nancy LeaMond, head of government relations and advocacy at AARP.
