Hallmark's Hairball: A Former Artist Told How He Didn't Get Sucked

Back in the mid-'90s, a manager at Hallmark Cards went to her boss to ask him to fast-track a line of cards for Kwanzaa. The holiday was getting mainstream attention, and the manager explained that American Greetings and other competitors were likely working on the same idea.

Her boss quickly shot down the idea. “Kwanzaa can't be very important," he said, “because I've never heard of it."

The anecdote illustrates something I heard frequently while interviewing current and former employees of Hallmark for this story about the company's layoffs. Many described a behemoth bureaucracy within Hallmark that stifles creativity and often sucks good ideas into a vortex of paperwork and budget meetings.

Turns out somebody has actually coined a phrase for Hallmark's overblown officialdom. more

Bright copper: Meet the new chief

He sports a CV that ticks many boxes for a modern executive: a business degree from Bocconi University (a respected Milan business school), a Harvard MBA and a stint at the management consultancy firm McKinsey. He ran mobile phone company Omnitel Pronto Italia until 2000, when it fell into Vodafone's clutches as part of its mammoth takeover of Mannesmann.

He is said to be bright and ambitious, with the analytical mind needed to gain a firm grasp on corporate strategy. He was seen as a possible successor to Sir Christopher Gent as chief executive, but that job went to Arun Sarin in 2003. The following year, Colao quit the company to run RCS Media, whose assets include the Milan daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Analysts saw his departure as a blow to Vodafone, but his time at RCS ended in rancour after a row with major shareholders over strategy. more

City a good wireless example

Richard formed a task force drawn from the City Council, local businesses and the local chamber of commerce, which in turn worked closely with corporate users in the area, including Raytheon, a major employer, as well as a network of health care providers, which, because they were looking for better data-networking solutions, agreed to contribute $1 million to a citywide fiber network project.

Encourage investment. Another resource Mayor Richard called on was cable franchise reform, which passed in Indiana in 2005 and thus permitted Verizon to begin fiber build-out without dealing with local bureaucrats who would have delayed the project by demanding costly regulatory concessions in return for granting the company permission to build.

Some states have passed franchise reforms to stimulate competition in areas where local governments, which, having grown fat on revenues from cable franchise fees, had every reason to protect local cable monopolies. more
