Business cutting back on staffing: NAB

A survey has found more businesses are reconsidering their hiring plans because of an economic slowdown.

National Australia Bank's quarterly survey shows a sharp drop in business conditions over the three months to June and the bank's chief economist Alan Oster says plans by businesses to employ more staff are rapidly declining.

He says that means competition for staff is becoming less intense and is now predicting the current 3 per cent growth in employment will slow to about 1.5 per cent over the next year.

"The slowdown has been sufficiently large in profits and trading that employers are starting to say, 'Well look we don't need to hire as many people'," he said.

Business confidence for the June quarter fell four points to -8, which is its lowest level since the economy was emerging from the 1990 recession. more

GMB reminds public on maize movement laws

THE Grain Marketing Board has warned farmers and the public that laws restricting quantities of grain that can be moved by individuals at any one time were still in place.
In a statement, GMB spokesman Mr Joseph Katete said an individual was allowed to carry a maximum of 150kg (3 x 50kg bags) of maize at any time for their own consumption and any excess would be confiscated by the state. He said people also needed to know that it was an offence to buy or sell maize other than through the GMB.
“GMB would like to inform farmers and members of the public in general that they are only allowed to move three bags of maize for their own consumption. Anyone caught moving an excess of three bags at any given time will lose the extra bags as they will be confiscated by the State," he said. more

Is recession avoidable? Business group says yes

NEW YORK — Gas prices are high, food's more expensive and the job market's cold, but the U.S. may still avoid a recession.

That was the message Monday from a private business group whose index of leading economic indicators defied expectations and inched higher in April.

The New York-based Conference Board said its forecast of future economic activity rose 0.1 percent in April, matching a 0.1 percent increase in March. Economists had expected a 0.1 decrease in April.

The index is designed to forecast economic activity in the next three to six months based on 10 economic components, including stock prices, building permits and initial claims for unemployment benefits.

"These data certainly reflect a weak economy, but not one in recession," said Ken Goldstein, labor economist at the Conference Board. more

International Business Grad School Questions asked

Open Question: Management of Information System (MIS) Gradschool?

Hey guys.. I need your help.. I live in AR, and I am looking for grad school that offers Management of Information System Program. So apparently, instead of Computer Science department, It is included in Business department. So far I have had two in my mind.. University of Arkansas in LR and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. I don't have geographic preference as long as I can pursue my academic career. FYI: This is my senior year, and I'm an international student. My major is information technology with GPA of 3.56. I will be done with my undergrad by fall 2010 and I am one semester ahead (3.5 years). Funding would be my biggest concern since I will have to self support. I am looking for a school that can get my an assistantship. I have been working in technology field for almost 3 years since my freshman year, so I have quite a bit of both technical and customer relation experience. Please help. Thank you! :) more

Resolved Question: College graduate who has been living with parents since October-Should I just pack my bags and move to a city?

I graduated college almost a year ago now (Spring 2009), and I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back home with my parents in October and have been holding 2 jobs in retail ever since. My hometown is extremely rural and doesn't have a lot of international business opportunities (which is what I studied). I'm going crazy.. there is nothing to do here, and I feel like I'm just wasting time that I should be networking. My parents won't let me move out until I have a full-time job offer, but I am considering up and moving somewhere. I feel like if I was in a city it would help my job prospects instead of applying in a small town hundreds of miles away. If I moved somewhere, I could at least work in customer service until that full-time job opportunity comes up. I feel like it's just a waste being here at 22, when I should be out starting a life of my own. I know I am not going to get a job just sitting here. I have been accepted into a few graduate programs out of state beginning in the fall, which my parents see as a waste of time, but I know it will open a lot of doors. What should I do? Should I just pick a place and move there?? Still apply for jobs through my computer in a hick town while working in retail? Go to grad school and take out loans? Ugh it is so frustrating, and I am getting tired of living with my parents and being in the middle of nowhere. more

Resolved Question: Pursuing Japanese MBA?

Studying abroad during undergrad wasn't possible because of school credits and financial issues and I found out that getting an entry-level job in Tokyo after I graduate would be nearly impossible. Instead, I'm now considering studying in Japan during graduate school after working in the U.S. for a couple of years. I'm majoring in International Business while in undergrad, and I want to focus on East and South East Asia. I've been to Tokyo a few times and now I really want to experience living there while I'm still young, so I figured my one option would be getting my MBA from a university in Tokyo. About the language issue, I've been actively learning for two years now, and I figured I could reach conversational or even fluent level if I wait until I go to grad school (two years from now) to go there. The thing is, should I decide to come back to the U.S. or pursue a job in Tokyo, how would a Japanese MBA affect my job prospects?I understand that competition in any professional field will be tight whether I decide to work in Japan or in the U.S. I was looking into the MBA programs for Keio, Waseda, and Sophia for their reputation in being internationally focused and wondered if it would be worth it to pursue an MBA in one of those schools should I choose to live out my professional career in Japan. more

Resolved Question: With which major i have a better chance of finding a job after graduating from grad school?

Hello , I am about to get into grad school , the thing is that i am not sure with which major it'd be easier to find jobs after graduating. I am an international student and i am looking to work in the US and later moving back to Europe. I have to choose between any of these three majors and i'm extremely confused : International Master of Business Administration ; Master of Public Policy and Management; or Master of education in Counseling and Guidance. I was a Political Science major in undergrad and it has been extremely hard to find a job in that area especially since as an international student i can't work for government organizations. I would deeply appreciate your opinions. more

Resolved Question: Should I take an entry level job at an advertising firm or pursue a master's in college student affairs?

I graduated from college in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in international relations. While in college I was in a sorority and had the opportunity to work in the admissions office. I was involved in a lot of student activities, studied abroad, and did a few internships. I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back in with my parents and have been working in retail until something comes up. I was recently accepted into graduate school for a master's degree in college student affairs, but I also interviewed for a full-time entry level job at a global advertising firm. I am very unsure of what direction to take, and just wanted to get some input about each direction. I definately enjoyed the college experience, and I think it would be neat to work at a college, but it is all I've known. I like learning, and the college environment. Part of me thinks that I might just be attracted to it because it's all I've known. However advertising/marketing is what I went to school for, but since I haven't worked in it, I'm not sure direction I can take with it. There's a lot that I want to do in my life, but I'm not sure what my end goal is. I feel like I'll figure out what my "dream" is as I go, but I need to start somewhere. I'm also unsure if it would be unwise to turn down a full-time to pursue grad school. I know I'd like to get a master's degree someday for sure and work on the international level but just not sure what direction. Suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Currently Confused About My Future...?

I'm 17 and currently being dragged under by the monstrosity called "College". ..and I am completely overwhelmed. Not by the applications themselves: I have already applied to all of them and been admitted to two of them. I'm pretty proud of that; some people end up rejected. But my parents keep bugging me: planning visits, pushing me to do really well grade wise (even though I already try hard!), telling me that I will have to work every summer in college, in general BREATHING DOWN MY NECK!!! And all of this has formed a picture: working hard at college, day in and day out, no more play or fun, grad school, then finding a job, to slave away at for the rest of my life. And all I can think is that running away is starting to look very appealing. I have to admit that I am naturally lazy, but its not the work load that is causing me unease. The problem is what i want to do/study. I want to major in History(preferably Asian/European), English(one of the few things I GET), Veterinary Medicine, International Business, Chinese/Japanese or German, and Agriculture. And as I've been told, I'm an idiot. I would have too 1) be a millionaire, 2) stay in college for the rest of my life, and 3) I still wouldn't be able to do all those things at once. So they're telling me to pick 2 at most. But I don't want to limit my life to those things. I actually just want to spend my life traveling: taking oxen carts and boats to travel among countries, with nothing but a backpack and a friend. Then again I also want to learn every language in the world (atleast semi-fluently), which is an impossible dream. So... I'm confused. And in need of advice. Maybe on which majors have a steady, enjoyable job after college or maybe if anyone knows of a USA gap year exchange program. Or maybe if there is anyone out there that would want to run away with me...but only as a last resort :P. I've read enough to know that runing away will never end happy or even happen (most get caught and shipped back to wear they belong). So just give me a piece of ur mind (no crappy comments like "...are you dumb!!" or "go get a reality check"), i'm asking for real, helpful, semi-serious answers. And if that is impossible, at least give me a good laugh ;)Thanks for your answers: they really helped. I feel alot better about what to do and my follow all of your suggestions. Sorry if i sounded like a winey brat: I just felt that everyone else knew what was going on and i was left behind. if you have any colleges/universitys to suggest, that would also help alot: so far, ive only applyed to Purdue Univ., USC, UNC Charlotte, and College of Charleston. more

Resolved Question: How do I get a master's or PhD in anthropology if I don't have a bachelor's degree in it?

I have a bachelor's degree in International Business and am thinking about pursuing a career in anthropology. Resolved Question: What are the requirements for admissions into an MBA program? =)?

I want to make sure I get as many of the qualifications done in time to apply for grad school. some facts: -undergrad junior with associate degrees -international relations major(BA)(2012) -communication major(BA)(2012)(likely to graduate with 3.5-3.7 for both) -freelance makeup artist -online business -community service (centered around international & youth issues) ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: 1) i am a non business major and i would prefer to go directly into a program after i graduate. i heard that some schools require that you have work experience after bachelors? or does my time working at a bank during undergrad count? 2) for my major the highest i had to take was statistics, macro & micro economics. i am assuming i should take calculus before applying? any other class suggestions? 3) so i need a good gpa, gmat score & business experience for admissions? thank you for helping me out (in advance)! more

Resolved Question: What is the best opportunity: College Admissions, Global PR/Marketing, Grad School-don't want to burn bridges?

I graduated in the spring of 2009 with a bachelor's degree in public relations and minor in international relations. While attending college I was able to work in the admissions office, which is also a form of public relations. However my coursework concentrated on pr/business. I would definately like to get a master's degree quickly, especially since I have the drive at this age to do it. I have been interviewing for quite a few jobs both in higher education and with an international pr agency. Working in admissions, I could get a master's for free from the college I work at, and at the agency, they would pay for you the master's degree. However, I already submitted 8 graduate school applications (both for a master's in international communications, and college student affairs), so I am wondering what happens if I get a full ride there. So much to think about.. What is the best job opportunity?? College admissions, a global pr firm, or going straight for a master's?? My problem is I'm not sure what I want to do exactly. I think it'd be fun to work at a college, but I also think I'd enjoy working in international public relations. I know that I want to work on the global level, but working at a college I could grow into international admissions or study abroad. Global PR there is a ton of growth in that too. I know as an end goal I'd like to be a professor of cross cultural relations. More than anything though, I just want to get out of the state that I live in. Most of the opportunities that I've been offered are in the state... Suggestions? What is the best route to take with this economy? more

Resolved Question: I have a job offer, but I've already submitted 8 grad applications. Should I take the job or go to grad school?

I graduated this past spring (May 2009), with a bachelor's degree in public relations and minor in international relations. I have an interview for a full-time job with a huge public relations agency, with a lot of growth opportunity. It'd be an entry-level job, but it would expose me to working with several global agencies and businesses. However, I have already submitted about 8 graduate school applications for a master's degree in international communications. None of them are near the agency at all geographically. I know that I want to work on the international level. I already took the time/money to apply to schools so if I end up getting in and getting an assistantship, it is going to be really tempting. However, I feel like this opportunity is good, and since it's entry level there's a chance that I could relocate somewhere after a few years. Therefore, I don't want to try and work on a graduate degree while there until I know I would be staying in that location for a while. What should I do? Do I take the job, and if I get into grad school, quit? Do I just turn down a job offer in hopes of getting an assistantship into grad school? Do I take the job and put grad school on the backburner? I'm just concerned if I do that, I won't have the drive to go back.. Suggestions? more

Voting Question: How important is a minor when applying for jobs / grad school?

I'm double-majoring in Spanish and International Business, and considering a minor in Economics. I'm about to start my last semester. I work part-time and takes classes - to get the minor I'd need to take an extra 6 hours of classes this semester, bringing my total to 18 hours. In the past I've taken 15 hours and been able to balance the workload, but the one time I tried to take 18 I ended up dropping the extra class because I didn't have time for it all. I could, in theory, try to work a little less at my job to make up for the extra hours in class, but it would still probably be my most grueling semester in college - something I'm not interested in doing unless I know it's worth the effort. So my question is - how important is a minor when applying for jobs and, eventually, to grad school? In looking through the questions already posted here the majority of the answers seem to range from "Not important at all" to "It can help, in certain cases". So, how important is it for a student who will already have two degrees, one already from the business college? more

Resolved Question: Is it worth it to double major/minor for grad school?

As of next Fall 2010, I will have completed the major requirements for my BA in Political Science. I am so excited, 6 more classes to take. 3 in the Spring, 3 in the Fall. I want to go to law school, to become a healthcare lawyer and get a Masters in Public Health or Public Administration. Heres the classes, I have taken already... Critical Thinking in Politics-Core requirement American Govt and Politics-Core requirement International Politics-Core requirement History of Pol Thought-Core requirement New York State Politics-Elective Mass Media and Public Opinion-Elective Public Policy and Public Administration-Core requirement In the Spring Im taking: Poltical Parties, Middle East Politics, and the Politics of James Bond. In the Fall, I have to take my Seminar, Intro to Comparative Politics, and one more free elective. Is it worth to add another minor such as Economics, Business Administration, History, Communications, English, Philosophy, Women, African American or Native American Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, or Sociology? Or just take a whole bunch of electives in all these areas instead of just trying to put a minor in my degree. Perhaps like Philosophy? I already got 1 minor in working on titled "Public Policy and Public Administration" I am also working on my honors thesis so, I dont want too much trouble. more

Voting Question: i am currently an undergraduate accounting major what should i pursue in grad school?

there seems to be a variety of opinions and ideas on this and was just wanting to find more information, maybe some of you are more familiar or have gone through the process so i'd appreciate any help! MBA, MSA, MST??? or should i consider something else? i do not have any relevant accounting experience yet if that makes a difference, i will be interning in the Spring, but grad school is a sure thing for me whether i do it now or later. perhaps i should look into information systems/computer technology? international business? thanks any advice is helpfulyes here in florida we can take the cpa exam with an undergraduate degree, but we are still required to complete another 30 hours (grad school) to receive the actual certification. so tax lady, you think it is best to get relevant work experience before attending grad school? thanks for the info about the MST, i am feeling like a Masters in Accountancy would probably be the best route for me more

Resolved Question: Struggling in college, and need good advice.?

Hi, I'm from a working class family. I just enrolled in an elite public college in my state last semester in the International Studies program to get into law school. I am 21 years old. Before I got into the state school, I was in a community college because wasn't that great of a student in high school and we didn't have any money to enroll me in a university out of high school. I recently changed my major into clinical psychology, after last semester's workload and the nature of their program (too business and economics focused) led me to become disenfranchised with my aspirations to become a lawyer. Every professor I've had so far had said I was very well-spoken, a smart student, and I become emotionally involved with the aspect of the study. When I was in community college, I had a 4.0 average for all five semesters. On top of that, I worked a job and was in the gym more or less for an hour a day. When I got into this university, I was overwhelmed by the amount of work they give the students- who, having been grandfathered into their curriculum out of high school, seem to accept this. Everyone I know studies, has a relatively high GPA, maintains this go-getter attitude, and has time for sports, music, and friends. I only found myself able to effectively complete and understand all of my work pulling all-nighters and absorbing excessive amounts of caffeine. I made a mistake last semester by working. It was my mother's (who is single) mandate that I maintain a job in order for her to give me a place to stay over break. My grades fell from the stellar 4.0 I had before entering to a staggering 2.3. None of my professors here were sympathetic. They all said "Manage your time. You'll get through this. You're smart." And off they went. I barely made it out last semester with the minimum credits for a full-time student. Now I'm taking an extra course to catch up, so in total, I'm taking sixteen credits this semester. I was doing fine for the first month, which is generally a baptism-by-fire type of workload. I still pulled all-nighters and drank coffee. I felt I was lacking in the social department since I had recently dropped going to the gym and decided to quit work to focus on studying and socializing, but keeping expenses to a minimum. I decided to become involved in Greek Life by joining a fraternity. I was hit by the ten-ton hammer that is pledge season. I am so behind in my schoolwork from missing so many consecutive classes due to lack of sleep and low motivation. Now I've hit rock-bottom. I have two B+'s, a C, and a C-. I'm completely unprepared for next week's final exams. I haven't read a quarter of the semester's workload. It seems irrational. The teachers here assign a week's load of work for a day, two of which we have per class. My community college friends who enrolled in other universities seem to be having it much easier. I feel that I've been dealt the wrong hand in life here by choosing to attend a prestigious school; sometimes I imagine transferring to another university, but I feel it's too late being a junior to start over. I don't see myself belonging here, amidst these robotic students with 3.5+ GPA's who eagerly take 18 credits a semester and enroll in organizations while having time for coffee with friends and going to parties. I've even lost interest in playing music, which is something I've always loved. I think this college and its high expectations are taking the best of me. People have said recently I've looked stressed, detached, and cold. I don't know what to do... I'm working 20 hours again to pay off pledge expenses. But now I feel like I'm not going to be able to go to grad school and will end up as a failure in life. How can I survive this next week, and what can I do about next semester? more

Resolved Question: Keep grad school textbooks and notes or trash them?

I have several boxes of books and notebooks from my graduate schooling (have an MBA). I have not looked at them once since I graduated 6 years ago. I marginally work in the field I went to school for (want to work in financial industry and/or international business, I have been a call center rep/telemarketer since grad school), and am looking to work in a field which is more closely related to my schooling, but I don't see this happening for at least another few years, if at all. I'm a senior business major and I'm really wanting to get a major in international business. I am wondering if it's really a big deal to be involved on campus if I want to get into graduate school. I've always been the type of person where I chose to have a job rather than be in organizations. Do you think I should join a bunch of clubs if I'm really wanting to get into grad school? more

Resolved Question: Is going to business school, law school, or getting a doctorate in Korean studies worth it these days?

I know someone thinking of doing one of the three. I say they are all a waste of time now, with the economy the way it is. You have biz grads who flip burgers, if they can even get that. You have law grads who can't find jobs, and a Ph.D in Korean studies??? What use would that be? The person I know doesn't seem too bright for someone who has a bachelor's degree from Duke...and it's in Comparative international studies/German/german studies...also a waste of time, I'd say. She owes like $75,000 in loans for this useless degree. No wonder her parents get aggravated with her.Plus, I consider this girl to be a frenemy, since she would hardly speak to me when she was unemployed for moinths. Then when she got a job in Texas, she tried rubbing my unemployed face in it by speaking to me again. Now, that she knows I am in Korea again, I think it's bugging her, 'cause she won't speak to me since. She saw me talking about Singapore one day, and all of a sudden she was on facbook announcing she was dying to go there all of a sudden. She couldn't wait to leav Korea, and now that I am bakc here, she has been talking about Korean things and now this doctorate in Korean studies thing. She acted like she hated Korea last year when she left. Very fishy indeed. Copycat syndrome. more

Resolved Question: How can I write a convincing finance resume where my experience looks mixed (but isn't)?

I left college for financial reasons many years ago and do not have a degree. I have overseen staffs of college grads, have been a coach and mentor to many, and am more well versed in business than the vast majority of graduates. I am currently working on my accounting degree, but will need to find work before I finish school. I have 7 years of international trade experience, including 5 in management that I do not include on my resume because it is old. I am 40 and looking for work in banking or finance. Current resume information: 1.Director of Operations / General Manager -- I managed a division of a co. for 1.5 years. Started as a temporary clerical position. I salvaged a major account by negotiating a compromise with an irate salesperson and the client. I began doing accounting and found systematic cheating by a large client. The financial materials I prepared to address this resulted in prompt payment of $200,000+. I then took over a failing division of the company and within 7 months the division was profitable. It was sold to someone with an MBA and extensive industry experience and within 6 months the company was bankrupt. The parent company was part of the dot com crash of 2000 and I was again looking for work. 2.Accounting (interim position for an insurance company). Spent a year there before, an urgent personal matter forced me to move on short notice (family related). The president of the insurance division gave me a glowing review and dozens of contacts where I would be moving including members of her family. 3.Wine Distributor, 14 months. Interim position taken immediately after arriving in my hometown. I worked independently for a company several hundred miles away, and reintroduced the company and its brands to this smaller local market with great success. 4.Finance / Credit Analysis / VP I was invivted to join a finance company (commercial leasing / lending). I became an officer of the company and built a significant clientele from scratch and generated the majority of the company's revenue. I was there 6 years before market conditions soured and all staff other than the president and a part-time CPA were cut. I am having trouble writing a resume that adequately conveys my accounting, business development, and management background. I am also having difficulty getting responses to my applications. Advice? more

Resolved Question: Best Canadian University for International Students: Toronto, York, Waterloo or Ryerson?

I'm looking to take a Postgraduate Tourism, Marketing or IT Management-related course :) MA or Grad Dip level. Kindly review the schools based on these criteria: - good programs for international students - great Engineering/ Business courses - one that is reputable but not too competitive... I want to learn in a good institution but don't want to be buried in books all day. Right now, I'm leaning towards UNIVERSITY of WATERLOO or RYERSON UNIVERSITY. Also, if you have additional time, kindly advise me on the status of the ff. in the schools you will mention: - part-time employment opportunities for students - great international student population - employment opportunities/ placement/ professional networking after graduation - extra-curricular activities and parties :) Thanks so much for your advice! [===================] I want to hear about reputations of schools from residents themselves. Because I hear from school recruiters/ websites all the time and of course, they tend to oversell their schools. I want to hear about what's more or less the general outlook on these schools. Thanks again! more

Resolved Question: What is better, an MBA or a Masters in a business related field?

I studied business as an undergrad and would like to go to grad school now. When I look into MBA programs however, I realize that I have already taken all these courses. It's usually classes like Finance, Management, Marketing etc. So I would feel as if I would be repeating everything, especially since all the classes are taught from an introductory level. There are Masters programs in business for International Business, Marketing, Management, Finance etc. These courses seem to build up on an actual business degree, so I would be more inclined to do that. However, it seems that MBA's are regarded higher than Master degrees, even though I believe that the Mater is harder. The admission process seems to be more competitive for an MBA and usually you have to take the GMAT. I also read that with an MBA you can get into high positions and with a Masters you can't. Is that true? Because it wouldn't make any sense to me. I am just really confused what to go for. A Masters in a business field such as Marketing, Mangagement, International Business etc. or an MBA. What do you think I should do coming from a business background? It also seems that most people who go for the MBA come from a non-business background. The MBA seems to teach only the most basic business skills. Far fewer classes than I took as an undergrad. So why would it be considered better in case it really is?But what is better? An MBA or a Masters??? By the way, I took 3 accounting classes and 4 finance classes as an undergrad. For the MBA program you only need 1 course each. more

Resolved Question: What is the best way to prepare for GMAT?

Currently, I am a Sophomore student majoring in business - finance and minoring in accounting. I am having awesome grades and planning to go to the best business grad schools in the country. For that I will definitely need lots of points on the GMAT. I have realized that I will need to start preparing myself starting from this summer. Resolved Question: I'm a recent high school grad and I really need your advice regarding college. Ten points to most helpful?

I’m having some major difficulties with what major to choose. Please please please please do not advise me to take up general ed courses, if you are, then please please don’t bother answering! Don’t mean to sound rude, but just hear me out first. For the longest time, I wanted to major in International Business, but then I asked around and did more research and eventually came to know that all the international business courses are theory. Having found this out, I diverted away from this major. But now for some reason I have reverted back to this major. The problem is I want to major in something fun and interesting. I have considered so many different careers but still can’t come to terms with that I really want to do. All I know is that I want to travel the world and become successful. Once again, I just want to major in something that will give me the opportunity to find an exciting and interesting job. I also do know that you have to master 1-2 languages in order to be successful with an International Business degree. I have also considered technology, but I just can’t figure out what in technology. Also, which degree will be hot in the future..international business or finance? I do know for a fact that in academia and the real world jobs, the ones that are really exciting and interesting are few and far between and seldom do they pay well. Anyway, I think I just have to come to terms with the fact that the working world just isn’t that interesting or exciting. I guess it’s called “work” and not “play” for a reason, lol. If you can somehow guide me, please do so. THANKS! more

Once again, please give me as much advice as you can. Thanks a ton.a degree that combines both business and technology. more
