Oil surpasses $147 a barrel South Florida Business Journal

Whether real or not, Iran's missile testing last week spurred enough controversy to push the price of crude oil higher, industry analysts say.

The missile testing, along with the U.S. Department of Energy reporting a slight decrease in fuel inventory, on July 11 pushed the price of crude oil to more than $147 a barrel from $145.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"In addition to the concern about Iran's apparent saber rattling toward Israel, Nigeria's oil output is expected to decline further," said Gregg Laskoski, AAA Auto Club South managing director, in a news release. "The dollar also weakened, and all of that contributed to crude oil's price climb."

The national average price of regular unleaded gasoline is $4.06 a gallon, compared with $2.95 a gallon at this time last year, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report. more

Business must tackle carbon with care

The focus for the Business Council of Australia is on the debate Australia will need to have following the release of the Government's green paper later this month. At the end of the day Australia is seeking to play its role in reducing global emissions. We all know that the challenge of reducing emissions and dealing with climate change will be won or lost at a global level. This does not mean Australia should not take action. What it does mean is we must get the detail right as we take action. The reality is that the introduction of a national emissions trading scheme in Australia, in the absence of a global price on carbon, requires a comprehensive response to two key issues. The first is maintaining competitiveness and preventing carbon leakage and the second is ensuring business is prepared to take risks and invest because there is a predictable and long-term policy framework. more

India Inc predicts economic growth dipping to 7.6%: Survey

NEW DELHI: Indian business leaders feel economic growth in 2008-09 will not surpass 7.6%, a survey report released by an apex Indian industry body on Friday said. Giving the thumbs down to the economic outlook on high inflation and hardening interest rates, as much as 77% of the 350 chief executives (CEOs) surveyed by the Assocham Business Barometer (ABB) said they did not expect growth to surpass 7.6%, a statement by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) said.

With double digit inflation coupled with tight monetary policy leading to increased interest rates and input costs, the ABB has revised its April gross domestic product (GDP) projections from 7.9% southwards to 7.6%.

The CEOs feared that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) could take further steps with revision in interest rate if domestic inflation continues to remain in double digits. more

FPB calls for business crime focus

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) has warned that recent government proposals to tackle business crime represent just the first step in tackling a rapidly escalating problem.

Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw has unveiled plans to force offenders to return to crime scenes, apologise and pay for losses and property damage. But the FPB drew attention to the British Chambers of Commerce's 2008 crime survey, which demonstrated that the cost of business crime has increased by more than £2bn since 2004 and now stands at £12.6bn.

FPB chief executive Phil Orford welcomed Straw's proposals but counseled that more needed to be done to prevent business crime taking place. "Many firms are faced with the costs incurred by repeated crimes against their premises. more

Graduate School Of Business Questions asked

Open Question: what are the chances of getting into pharmacy school with a business B.A?

I am undergoing an accounting B.A right now but am thinking of going into pharmacy school bc of the job security. I tested out of my basics bc of AP tests so I don't really have a science GPA, though I still need to take the rest of the prereqs which I think I can manage a 3.0+ in. So honestly, how would it affect my chances for pharmacy school were I to graduate with an accounting B.A? more

Open Question: Should I go back to school at 21 yrs of age?

To make a long story short.. At 18, I graduated from a private French Lycee in Canada. I've always loved sketching and designing Fashion Illustrations and thought... "I only love Art, Fashion, languages and Literature and am bad at everything else so I should become a Fashion designer since I am passionate and crazy about it!" So, I applied at 2 prestigious Fashion schools in England and got rejected. I was very sad and then got accepted at my least wanted school in L.A and thought, "Ok, this is a sign. California is where I need to go study!" Went there and switched to a community college with the same program but w/ lesser tuition fees. Well for 2 years I got depressed. I was only good at the business/drawing part, and the making/sewing part even though I tried. I was really bad, quite horrible in fact. I know it's a skill that can be learned BUT not only was I bad. I had no more will, confidence, ambition and passion left. I had all four when I went alone to California supported by my parents. For 2 yrs I kept wanting to give up...but held on because I would be known as a Fashion school dropout. I would bring shame and utter disrespect to my parents and set a very bad example to my siblings. Also the money spent would a complete waste. Well...I got too sad and depressed...I got suicidal. After clear thinking and sheer embarrassment, going home for some rest and thinking about how it all got so wrong sounded best to my mother and myself. So, I got 2 jobs about 3-4 weeks after I came back in Sept. in 2009 but got depressed and my mother fell ill. I resigned from one and got fired from the other. Now, even though I am still young at 21 yrs of age and am still unemployed since Dec.2009. I have no experience and am sending out and giving out resumes left and right...but to no avail. I've realized that even though I feel old, late in the game and like a complete loser. I mean...where do you go after dropping out from Fashion school in L.A. to being an unemployed dropout in Ottawa, Canada... It's not as if I dropped of of Med school or a prestigious music program. I have no future without a Bachelor's in something. All my friends picked stable careers and are graduating at the end of this year or in 2011. And here I am...a worthless Fashion school dropout loser... Funny thing is I still love Fashion. I want sing and dance and write songs for a living but that will never happen. So I ask, should I go back to school? ...well more precisely University and major in something like Art History/ Finance to become a museum curator..or study English or French Lit. (I am bilingual) to be a Teacher or Translator These are the only majors where I might succeed. These are the only subjects that interest me because I'm not good at Math. and the Sciences so there. I need suggestions, guidance advice..? From a severely depressed/ridden with low self-esteem and incredibly scared of the future girl more

Open Question: Need help from military members with years of experience. Should I join the Air Force or the Navy?

I am about to graduate from college with a bachelors degree in business administration with a 3.5 GPA. I took the ASVAB and I have a 72 AFQT score. I am not the best test taker. I studied like crazy for the Naval OAR exam in order to qualify for Naval OCS, but scored a 35, which is not competitive enough. So I am considering my second option and enlisting in either the Air Force or the Navy? I do believe in service but these are some other reasons why I want to join the military in order of preference. 1. Graduate School 2. Travel opportunities to see the world. 3. I have $22,100 in student loans that I want the military to pay. 4. Adventure (I would like to work in the intelligence field and learn a new language) Which branch supports my previous goals the most? Which military branch provides the greatest amount of travel? In working in the intelligence field, does one branch beat the other? What branch will I have a greater opportunity to complete my graduate program? Which branch provides the best life style? Will I be doing more grunt work in the Navy than the Air Force? Which branch do I have a better opportunity to become an officer in the future? I am hoping I can have an experience military members provide me with some insightful advice and perhaps use as a contact in the future for further questions? Thanks for the help! more

Open Question: Should I go to France to finish my studies (exchange program)? Would it be recognized by US employers? help!?

The facts: Im currently a Junior at a California State University. Major: Business Management 3 Semesters more till I graduate (including the 1 im currently taking) Proposal: Im part of my school's business program, which is offering the opportunity to study abroad (to France) and receive a 2nd Bachelors degree. How it works: You would have to study 2 semesters abroad (approx. 10 months, and by the end of the term, you would receive a bachelors degree from that University. I get to pay cal state tuition, and only cover for personal expenses and housing which is heavily subsidized by the French Government. After the 10 months are over, I would come back to California, finish off my other degree (2 semesters more to go) and possibly con-validate some of the courses, so I dont lag behind a whole year. I would then graduate here in California also, receiving my 2nd degree. I would probably study marketing or operations in ICN, and finish off management here in California. French University: ICN Business School (Nancy, France) EQUIS accredited Member of Grandes Ecoles Member of AACSB & EFMD My question was if It was worth going there. Thankfully my parents support me. The only concern for me is to go and besides the cultural enrichment, having to waste 1 year (10 months) if a degree from the ICN Business School is not recognized in the United Sates. Would recruiters/employers here in the US, even care? Do they only focus on national schools? I hear people say, some recruiters/employers see it as a plus, some recruiters/employers dont even care. What do you think? Thanks! ( any comments/answers are greatly appreciated) more

Resolved Question: Is it odd that illegal aliens can protest for rights in the U.S. but can’t do it in their country of origin?

Comprehensive Immigration Reform ‘March for America’ – Over 100,000 expected Washington D.C. - March 17 - In just a few days, Sunday, March 21, Washington will see the largest concentration of pro-immigration reform protesters in the history of the United States. This rally, will bring together legal aliens, illegal aliens, U.S. citizens, gay, black, Brazilians, Koreans, Indian, Irish, religious and non-religious people, as well as a myriad of different groups, from our “melting pot” with one goal in common – to fix our broken immigration system; a system that if left unchecked will eventually destroy families, business and the economy of the United States. People from communities across the United States are working together towards achieving the 279 votes needed to win just and humane comprehensive immigration reform legislation: 218 votes in the House of Representatives, 60 votes in the Senate, and one signature from the President. There are estimated to be between 11 and 20 million undocumented immigrants, at least 8 million of whom are in the labor force. These immigrants want to “come out of the shadows” and become productive members of the American society yet have not been able to do so because their undocumented status which give them basically no rights. They have to accept lower pay and worse working conditions than would be the case if they had legal. They are unable to drive a car, attend college and join the armed forces status or even collect unemployment benefits after they have paid into the system. The effect of the current laws undercuts the potential of millions in the country, reduces the consumption power of the working class, and, even though undocumented immigrants do pay taxes, deprives federal, state and local governments of increased revenues that would come from higher earnings. Children have the greatest problems. Some 4 million U.S. citizen children with one or both parents undocumented, who, on a daily basis face the cruel possibility of the arrest and deportation of a mother and father. Many others entered when they were young. They graduated American high schools, and now, cannot attend college, get a job or even drive a care. They are relegated to a lower class, similar to the historically “untouchables” from India. These children, who for all intents and purposes are Americans; they speak English without an accent, they are part of our culture and have little or no knowledge of their parents country and heritage. The far right anti-immigrant lobby complain that U.S. born workers that the undocumented are "stealing their jobs" and claims that their mass deportation would "open up" jobs for U.S. born workers. They have convinced many, but these people manipulate the facts to prove their point. Workers of every kind, immigrant and U.S. born, documented and undocumented, occupy jobs in the economy, but also create wealth by their toil and engage in other activities (as consumers and taxpayers) that create jobs for others. http://news.jornal.us/article-4699.Comprehensive-Immigration-Reform-March-for-America--Over-100000-expected.html more

Open Question: What can I do to achieve my goals?

I graduated from college two years ago and things ..have not been good. I know that we are in a recession, but i feel like thats just an excuse. I have no family to help me with money. My problem is this..i graduated from college with a degree in history(and a associates in business). I have tried to get a better job and noone has even called me back. What can I do? I thought about going back to school, but i dont think a masters degree is the answer...I would like to move back to the border and have a job at least paying 15 dollars an hour... more

Open Question: What careers (or college majors) would allow me to live in a rural area?

I hate cities and would love to live in a small town or other rural area. I grew up in a town of pop. 6,000 with a "city" of pop. 150,000 about 30 miles away. Cities any bigger than that bother me. I don't want to go into agriculture. Teaching isn't something I'd consider unless it was at the college level, and I'm not sure about graduate school anyway. I was considering computer science, but I'm not sure about job prospects in small towns/cities. I don't think I want to run my own business. Maybe government work in computer science would work for me? I'm not sure. I'm open to suggestions/advice.I should note that I say I don't want to go into agriculture because I know NOTHING about it. I wasn't raised on a farm, or anything similar, and wouldn't know what to expect with a degree in agriculture. It'd be a gamble. more

Open Question: Would other state universities accept my credits?

I went to Devry and got a Bachelor's of science engineering degree. The engineering degrees from Devry here in Atlanta are actually ABET accredited. I can't speak too much for the business degrees but I've heard business graduate nightmare stories about not being able to get a job or transfer credits I've heard a lot that "for profit" schools do not look too good on paper but we've had students here get software engineering positions at Lockheed Martin, Phillips, GE (I got hired here recently), and many other great companies. I don't think the quality of the education is bad at all, just over priced. To me it comes down to the individual and not the paper because I've known graduates from FSU who still work in restaurants because they didn't know how to apply themselves. My concern is that I want to pursue other engineering degrees at other universities like Georgia Tech. Will state universities accept the credits from Devry? I understand a school like Georgia Tech turning me down since they are near top of the nation when it comes to engineering but what about other state universities that aren't at the very top but are still very respected? more

During my junior year I took Principles of Accounting 201, 202, and income tax and have become interested in pursuing an career in accounting. I would like to work for a Big 4 firm one day. Since i'm a upcoming senior, I will not have time to get a accounting degree also. I feel its pointless to stay back an extra yr at Shepherd and earn a bachelors in accounting because Shepherd is not wellknown or ranked, and Big 4 firms have never came to Shepherd. Should I go get an Masters in Public accounting from a different university?. The schools that i'm interested in attending for my masters are: WVU (very cheap instate tuttion, plus WVU claims the Big 4 accounting firms and many regional accounting firms actively recruit at WVU), UNC (ranked #9 in the country) Vanderbilt (seems to have an strong reputation, plus majority of it's students get internships that pay 10k or more with the school's partner compnaies). The only problem with UNC and Vanderbilt is that tution is expensive (41k and 57k respectively for an 1 yr program). I have manged to graduate with very little debt, and I would like to keep it that way. But i'm willing to consider other schools if my chances of getting an job at a Big 4 firm are greater. btw i'm graduating from Shepherd with an 3.6-3.7 cum laude honors, dean list, plus many extracirculars, so hopefully I can get into good masters programs. Thanks for all your help more

Open Question: At what point should I clear out old transactions from my accounts in Quicken, if ever?

I'm in my late 20's and have been using Quicken since graduating high school. I've built up quite a number of transactions in my various accounts over that time. I'm wondering if I should ever delete the old transactions or if I should open new "accounts" to start them fresh every 10 years or so. I've already started trying to clean some things up by deleting memorized payees and categories that are no longer relevant, like my college bookstore, businesses that are no longer around, etc. Is Quicken meant to be used for storing every transaction during a person's lifetime? Or, if not, what steps should I take to "clean" it out a bit? more

Open Question: should i go straight to a fashion institute or to a regular university first?

my dream one day is to open my own design/art studio, clothing brand, become an apparel designer, manage my own business, yes its a big dream but its something that i love and want to do for the rest of my life later on. I've been told that im really undecisive and i jsut really don't want to make a huge mistake, i could go into the art institutes such as FIT, Art center, Parsons and ect, but i do want to major in buisness first so i know what to do once i land on my own two feet and start my own clothing brand/company if possible, and i don't just want to be another face at those school that might only result to me working at a retailing store, which is not bad its just not something i could imagine myself doing, i would want to be my own boss. of course though i would work part time at a retail store or intern but not as a life job. so i was wondering if it would be better to go to NYU or USC ect and major in business first, graduate then go to the fashion institutes or head straight to them? more

Voting Question: Where would it look better to go to college?

Right now im inbetween going to the university of montana and the university of dayton. Dayton is definitely a better school academic wise, but my heart is telling me to go to Montana. I want to go into business and im into the business school at montana but only the economics program at the university of dayton. If you were a company looking to hire people would you even consider a student graduating for the university of montana vs a better school like Dayton or Michigan st? more

Voting Question: Is grad school an option for a person with a low gpa?

I graduated 3 years ago with a BA in Sociology and minor in Poli Sci. I graduated with a 2.0. Prior to graduating I managed a fast food restaurant. I continued to do so for another 2 years upon graduating. Unfortunately, when I decided to do something in my field the economy went down hill and the job market became a lot more competitive. My steady job, in the restaurant business, was now working against me. I had no experience in the private sector. Now here I am 3 years later, not able to find a decent job(the restaurant was sold & have not been able to get another good paying job), and still no experience in my field. I would like to go back to school to get a Master's Degree. My two main problems is a) I graduated with a very low gpa. 2.0. b) money. My question is: is it possible to get accepted into any Grad programs with a low gpa (2.0) in the state of Florida? Do I need to take some undergrad classes to increase my chances? Any legit advice will be well appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Person with mental health issues trying to find a job, could you offer some advice please?

My brother is 36 years old and is having a lot of trouble finding a job. He graduated high school, but clearly has many issues when it comes to basic academics, ie poor math skills and low reading level. He got laid off from a moving company that he'd been working at for 4 years, about a year ago and has been looking for another moving job. He has been in the moving business for the past 21 years, and claims that it's all he can do. He says that when he was younger, he was diagnosed with everything from adhd to learning disorders, mental health issues, and I can see this. I just want to know if there is any type of job that he could possibly get, because his unemployment is running out (is this possible?) and he's lost hope in finding a job. I've looked for him, but there are always qualifications that he just can't do. Any help would be wonderful, thank you. more

Voting Question: For all you active or retired navy soldiers: is the navy right for me?

Okay, so Im interested in joining the US Navy and I was wondering if some of the answers to the questions I asked my recruiter were accurately rendered. So to all you people who are currently enlisted in the navy or have been I'd appreciate what your experience has shown you to be true concerning the matters I'm about to cover. Based on my personal characteristics and goals, do you believe joining the navy would be in my best interest? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. So to start, here is a little background on me. I am 23 years old trying to get my bachelors degree in business administration, more specifically a focus in entreprenuership or small business management. I have about 2.5 years left before I graduate and I wish to complete my bachelors degree debt free, taking 15 credit hours per semester untill I finish and then hopeful move on to an MBA program. Now, from what my recruiter tells me, the most amount of time I would expect to be out to sea is about 6 months - during my entire 4 year naval career - depending on what job I qualify for. What concerns me is whether or not I will have the time to complete a degree in the time I am with the navy. Since, from what I understand, when on shore I will be working 8 hour days, when off shore, fitting in school once traveling can be difficult to do. How accurate is my understanding of the dailey time committment? In otherwords will I be out to sea on only one rotation, or can the navy basically ship me out whenever they want and where ever they want, for how ever long they want without a moments notice? I personally dont want to take all of my classes online and wish to take my core classes at an accredited land based university that I would be required to physically attend... Plus I dont want to exit the navy after my four year term with no college degree because I was out to sea most of the time... My recruiter explained it to me as I would be be working mostly 9am-5pm, monday-friday leaving my evenings open for school and weekends... Also would I only be expected to actively serve 4 years, of an 8 year contract. How true is what he explained to me? As I mentioned earlier, finishing my degree is of most importance to me. I like the fact that I wouldn't have to worry about the financial aspects of school while in the navy, but I want to be sure I wont have a hard time of prioritizing my degree because of factors outside my own control, like being shipped off to bumb fucking egypt for 12 months, or having to work crazy hours and so forth. Keep in mind if I stayed in the civilian sector taking 15 credit hours per semester I could have a degree in 2.5 years, but most likely with debt :(. So what should I do? Join or not? Will I be able to complete a degree and be fully fuctional in my roll with the navy? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Is grad school an option for me?

I have a 2.74 gpa from my undergrad. My degree is in Psychology. I made a 620 on the GMAT. 1250 on the GRE. Can I get into any business schools? If not what other graduate degrees are lucrative? I'm tired of being poor. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Why do I have this sudden urge to stay young?

After I graduated high school I was immediately employed by my father. I worked for him for about four years and made a substantial income. But for some reason I still felt empty and far from being satisfied with my life. I was working and living in the real world while all my friends were attending college enjoying their youth. After the recession hit my father's business, I made the choice to go back to school. It's been a rough adventure after losing more than half of my annual salary. But it's actually given me intrinsic warmth, a sense of freedom, and youthfulness. I'm doing quite well in school and I have about two more years left until I obtain my bachelor's degree in accounting. I do not want to go back to the "real world". I want to travel, party, see the world, and learn first hand about other cultures while I'm still young. Is this wrong? I'll be 26 by the time I graduate. I feel like I should settle down and start making a "real life" for myself. I just don't want to go back to that grim life so soon. I learned real quick about what it was like to be Americanized at a young age. Why do I have this urge to stay young and free? more

Resolved Question: how do i start a business?

i have much to offer when it comes to healthcare and am compassionate, ethical, moralistic, but most of all caring. 6 years ago i came across a clinic that offers healthcare to the people of the community in nuevo laredo, mexico for 20 pesos or 2 dollars and they receive basic care from gynocology to general healthcare and at the same time have medication issued to them if they are not able to purchase it at the local pharmacy. i am interested in placing a minor emergency clinic in my community with more or less the same idea as many people are not able to afford the doctors, hospital etc. how do i present my idea? i desire the old abandoned hospital as the first available and convenient place to start, but i have no idea about the funding. i am aware of the laws surrounding healthcare so i would be careful not to overstep the boundaries. there is so much need and i have so much love to give. everyone tells me i should be a nurse as i have much knowledge concerning health and medicine, but i am queezy when it comes to needles. so i have friends that i graduated from school with that are gentle in that aspect. where do i seek information and funding from the government? more

Resolved Question: Is our marriage worth saving?

First, a little background history: My wife and I started young. We were engaged young, married young, and started our family young. And despite the odds and the nasty comments from relatives, we managed to not "end up in a trailer home" (in quotes because this was one of the aforementioned comments from a relative. We did good for ourselves. We bought our first home, started our own business and then because of the business, sold our first home and moved into a bigger one that had space for our business. Well, the economy took a crap and so did our business. Then we were stuck in a too-big home with a too-big mortgage that the business was no longer paying half of. So I got a weekend job. It was hard at first, but we managed. Then I began hating my full-time job. I'm miserable there. So I applied to a college and began attending classes every weeknight in the evenings so that I can get into a career I love. It's been about three years since that decision. Well, my wife is miserable. She is a stay-at-home mom who is also attending school full-time, but everything of hers is online so it doesn't interfere with her being home with the kids. In the beginning, she was in full support of my going back to school but now she makes comments sometimes like when I have to study and she wants to plan a family thing..."of course you have to study, etc." She says things like she's tired of being the one waiting at home for the other. She's tired of when she's had a terrible day with the kids that she doesn't have a partner who comes home in the evening so she can get out and re-coup. She hates that the boys are being jipped out of a family dinner each night. She also says that me being gone all the time is affecting how she mothers, her patience is wearing thinner and she's constantly stressed out because there's no start and end to her "workday." Then we fight because I ask her how she thinks I feel...I'm working full-time, going to school and then working another 12 hours over the weekend. I tell her to wait it out, that our situation will get better but she says by then she's afraid she'll have too much resentment. We're trying to sell our house. I'll be graduating in a year. She is almost finished with school. But I can't get her to see that it will all be coming to an end soon. She always uses the line "what if I'm dead by then?" (she started using this line after her friend was killed in a car accident about 9 months ago.) She says when the house sells, we should go our separate ways, but I can't see how that could be better than our current situation. What can I do? Are we past saving? When it's good, it's reallllly good but then she gets into moods where she just resents everything I do. I don't know what to do, I don't want to lose her but I can't change our situation. more

Voting Question: Being rough vrs. Being a man......A piece I wrote telling young men not to go that fast route. Is it good?

Over the years, people had said some disturbing comments to me about my "unmanly" tendencies. "Dude, you need to man up" "You wouldn't last 15 minutes in the hood". Even church members and college graduates had said this to me. But I wonder what do they mean by soft? I always thought it was because I wasn't no gangster. I thought it was because I live in a safer neighborhood, graduated high school, or never been to jail. It wasn't until one day I realize that my lifestyle had nothing to do with those comments. After spending some time with myself, I began to see what people mean. Physically, I'm a big guy. I'm not a giant, but I'm far from small. I look at the way I act and I see that I'm shy, soft spoken, scared, never defend myself, lack confidence. I think about all the "soft" jokes and all these traits I have can be percieved as "soft." "weak" or "unmanly". Shy men have it rough because society pressures us to come out of our shell. They make us feel as if a man ain't suppose to be shy. A man is supposed to be out and about, bold & courageous, stand up for what he believes in and even "dying for his country" But really, it aint the matter of being "hard". You don't have to be ''hard" to get rid of your "soft" tendencies. Hard means "tough, cold-blooded, heartless". A man murdering somebody, then going on about his business, not feeling anything as if nothing happened is "hard". Plenty of young men take this too far. They think that if they act hard, many people will be afraid of them. Not knowing that there's always other men out there that will test them. Hard people have more enemies than soft people. Hard people can never rest because they always have to watch their back. If you act hard, and do people wrong, everybody will hate your ass. Some people will respect you and treat you good only because they're scared, out of fear. I don't think there's no need to be hard OR soft. When you think about it, a soft person and a hard person both end up having the same results in the hood: either beaten up, shot or dead. There's nothing worst than going out here, acting tough and get the sh*t beat out of you for trying to be something you're not. But again, I ask myself " If I cant be hard or soft, then how can I get people to respect me?" Honestly, I believe that CONFIDENCE is the way to survive in the world. I think self assurance is the only way to get people to respect you and treat you fairly. When you're bold and secure, it'll be hard for others to see you as a victim. You can be a very warm & friendly person, and still put the fear in god in people when you show them that you're not the person to wrong. It starts with your inner self. I always had a belief that other people were superior and better than me and it shows. When you carrying that belief, it will show. Other people will see it and take advantage of you for being intimidated by them when you shouldn't be. Size don't seem to intimidate a person once they know how that person is. I used to think if I pumped a lot of iron, people will leave me alone. But they didn't always do that. I think people usually treat a person by the way they act. It doesnt always have anything to do with how big you are. A man could be 6 foot 9, but if he still has a soft demeanor, people will still walk over him and take advantage of him if he lets them. You can pump iron everyday, but if you still carrying that same soft demeanor, people are still going to treat you the same way. You'll just be known as the big dude who can easily get b*tched out a lot by other people. I remember a guy in my school at Holy Cross name Romelio. He was a great big, heavyset dark skinned guy. He was really big, and I wouldnt have never fought him. But I seen that these white boys still didnt seem to respect him because of the way he acted. He wasn't shy but he was kind of soft and "oreo" like. I'm telling you, confidence is the only way to survive in the world. I talk a lot about big men, but I've noticed that we have a lot of tiny short men out here in the world too. You got some short men who can't whup nobody's ass, but they talk and act like they can. They go around talking mess, acting bold and courageous, and not too many people ever mess with them. You know why? Because of the way they carry themselves. Not because they think they're bad, but by them being small, their confidence is so big, and people overlook that they're small. Romelio didnt get that kind of treatment and he was a big guy! Get my drift? Whenever I come to work, I check out all the other guys sitting around before start up. When I'm looking at these guys, I see that they're laughing, talking, joking, being social, talkative. While looking at this, its hard to view them as a victim. These aren't bad guys, they all are pretty cool & friendly people. They aint acting tough, picking fights, whupping peoples asses. It's just that these youngMy question is...do you agree with me?? more

Resolved Question: Advice/Input/help/etc on Business or dietetics/nutrition degree?

I am graduating High school this year and I don't know what to do. I'm thinking either business or dietitian. Business: I've looked at some required courses, they look pretty boring and like something I wouldn't want to "learn" for >4 years. (I.E. Fall asleep classes) But a business degree is pretty versatile, but then again apparently there are a lot of jobless people running around with business degrees. Dietitian: I've always loved health. But i think they average around $45k a year (and who knows how much for newbies) which isn't a ton. I'm mainly afraid that I'll get a degree in nutrition and end up not being able to find a job. I'm not afraid of anything else. I love math. I like science. I know i'd love going to school for this. Soooo I guess my question is: which degree is better? Would i be more successful with a business or a nutrition degree? Are Dietitian jobs hard to come by? Sooooo confused. P.S. Should I take the AP Stats test? I know I'd pass with >3 but I'm worried that if I have to take another Stats class in college that I will fail that class because I know I won't remember anything/much P.P.S. Does my minor have to relate to my major? Because I want to minor in Chinese..which is .. kind of random..I guess THANks! more

Open Question: Should I take a break from school?

I am going to graduate in May with my AA in Business Administration. I completed my associates in two years straight out of high school. I took full time classes and went during the summer and I'm sick and tired of school, but I'm the type of person that wants to get things over with. I was thinking about taking a break in Fall 2010, but I'm afraid that I'm going to regret it and will feel a semester behind. hey! im 17 and im in high school 11th grade and i had this guy from Lincoln Tech come to my class and talk to us about how great Lincoln Tech is and how it can help you make money & how 88% i think he said Lincoln Tech students get placed in a job and all this good stuff about how blue collar jobs are good because cars will always be around and what not so there is always a demand for work in this field. now for my question, is this really as good as he made it sound? like i want to do sound systems, and radios and gps devices and EVERYTHING Electronic in a car, i have a huge passion working with computers. so can i get like a personal review of personal experience with anyone who has been to LT and knows how it works. i also herd they pay you for attending training and when you graduate you start out on average like 20,000 18 or 19,000 a year and you get your bachelors (i believe) in like 2 years or something like that but what are your thoughts should i go? is it good is it worth it? will any place of business recognize me for attending LT? i have read so many bad reviews online is it really a bad school? thx! more

Voting Question: How many people here didn't go to a 4 year college and still make decent money?

Do you feel okay in the decision you made? Do you think a 4 year degree is absolutely necessary to succeed in this world. Sometimes I wonder what my 4 year degree will amount to if it is not in the medical field? I have heard several people tell me that sometimes it is better to attend a trade school, community college or even just get an online degree simply because lots of people get 4 year degrees and do not even use them in the subject they got the degree in. Then, after they graduate, they find themselves in a wall of debt due to student loans. For example, I know people who have majored in Business, History or even Accounting and when they graduate, they do not even get into the profession in which they have a degree in. Resolved Question: what would you consider an ideal first job for someone about to graduate in graphic design?

Or an ideal internship? I know that there is a world of difference in what a student does in school and how a graphics business actually works. I'd love to learn and I am the type that is willing to start from the very bottom to get my foot in the door. Just wondering what I should look for, everything I see basically is asking for 3 plus years experience. more

Open Question: Girls what do you think of this? i m writting it'?

When I found out we were moving again and I would have to change schools, I was not surprised, I was actually waiting for it. This has happened to me so many times it’s gotten old. Obviously it is no one’s business because I suppose in other families the parents would ask how the children feel about it . They don’t see how much it sucks for me to have to change environments so often. It just annoys me is that when things are finally kind of, acceptable it’s time for me to move again. Which by now you would think I’m over it but still. School is starting next week and I have to say I’m a bit nervous. Every time I think about it I get that feeling where my stomach pangs and I feel the urge to pee. I just really don’t feel like hearing all those “Hey what’s your name?” And all the introductions people feel like they have to give. I mean don’t get me wrong. I’m all for friendships and all but I am so tired of people who act like they are friends for the first two days then you say hi to them in the hallway, not because you want to but because, oh I don’t know you want to be polite or because you just feel like you have to; they ignore you. Or they smile at you like you’re some stalker, obsessed with them. Hey, it’s not like I wanted to say hi to you in the first place. I just really don’t know how to deal with most people so I come off as weird. Which I wouldn’t really mind be seen as except people act really annoyingly towards the people they think are weird. Well at least people in high school. Two weeks ago, after we had packed some of the last boxes in our car, my dad went past a light brown building. I wasn’t really paying attention until my father told my mother, “It’s closer to the house than Springbrook.” That’s pretty much how I knew it would be my new school. You don’t even want to know how I found out we were moving. My father doesn’t tell me anything; he doesn’t tell us anything. The relationship between my father and me pretty much goes like: “Good morning dad”, “Good morning, how are ya.” Then that’s pretty much it unless he is yelling at me for something I did or, needs me to call my mother or one of my siblings. I have two brothers and an older sister. My twenty years old sister, Mila-Rose is the eldest .She graduated from high school last year and took a year off to travel throughout Europe with her close friends. I think it’s two other girls and two guys. My parents don’t know about the guys. My older brother Yannick is eighteen years old, and he’s a senior in the same high school I attend. He is the one I am least close to. My little brother Nicolai, twelve years old, is the spoiled one in the house. I always say he is an accident because he came 6 years after all of us. For the last few days Nicolai has been popping in my room to tell me how exited he is: “This is going to be so cool! New friends, classes, new everything. Do you think girls will like me? What shirt should I wear for the first day of school?” “Nicolai,” I say for the hundredth time, stop being so vain. No one cares what you look like” At that time I heard Yannick shouting from his room: “ She doesn’t care what she looks like, that’s she has no boyfriend!”What do you or do you not like about it? more

Resolved Question: How to deal with being a young manager of a business?

My family has had a business since before I was born. My parents of course own the business. I am the next most experienced person with my whole lifetime being at this place. I graduated a year ago from high school. Now I am manager at 19 years old. I am having some BIG problems. If anyone has any suggestions, please say.... I am young, I look younger than I am, and customers dont always take me seriously. I know my stuff, I really do, but when a customer walks in and askes for someone else, its really hard to keep my confidence up with that person. Most of our employees are a lot older than me, some 50's, 60's. They dont like the idea of a 19 year old being in charge of them. I dont blame them, but I am the experienced one. They just started. When a customer asks for them instead of me, they get this thing in their head that they are over me. The biggest problem! A couple of past employees are coming back after not working for a few years. When I last worked with them, we were good buddies, all age 16-17, i was not always serious with the job at that age and tended to goof around. But since that 3 years ago I have changed a ton, I am an adult, I think differently than I did at 16. My fear is when they return, they are going to kind of try to think things are the way they were before?, and this really sucks because I am good friends with them. I have heard you cant be friends with your employees, but Im not sure how to handle this. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Certificate or Minor?

I have a bachelors in biology but want to get into medical sales. I thought if I got into a minor or certificate in business from a school that also would allow me to do an internship, I could definetly increase my chances of getting a job in medical sales. My question is whether I can get a minor since I already graduated. My other question is whether a certificate program in business would require a business background as my understanding was that a certificate means you already have experience in that field, which I dont. more

Voting Question: Business cards for university students -- tacky or professional?

Hello: So I am a undergraduate student completing my degree in Psychology. I intend to pursue graduate school after my I complete my degree. Anyways, I was thinking of getting some business cards printed up with my personal information such as my email, phone number, and personal website, as well as it saying "Undergraduate" where the occupation/position would be. I want to hand it out to potential thesis supervisors when we meet and others to begin networking a little more. So my question is does this come across as being tacky or trying to hard? Or does this seem professional and appropriate. I guess I am looking for some answers from some professors on how they would perceive this All other advice is also welcome :) more

Resolved Question: So, I found out earlier that I'm not going to graduate this Spring, because...?

My adviser informed me that I've yet to meet the Global/International or Historical Awareness course required for my degree. Now before I enrolled for the Spring semester, I met with an adviser (different one) who explained to me what final credits I needed to complte to get my diploma. She did not mention anything about a Global/International or Historical Awareness course. So now, I feel lied to, along with the thought of me being RIPPED OFF for taking an unnessecary course, because at the end of this semester I would've earned, what I thought and was told, my 64 credits for my Associate of Business, but now I'm going to be earning 67 credits due to being mislead by an adviser. The fine print says I needed to take a Global/International or Historical Awareness course and I thought the college advisers were there to help me (like tell me about the fine print and what I needed to do to earn my degree/credits and what not), not mislead and rip me off. Because the way I'm seeing things is that the school I'm attending "hid" this info from me, so that I continue to "invest" money for education, as they know once I'm graduating the odds of me paying for anything towards the school is slim to none. My question is, what should I do about this? Should I bring this to the Dean's/President's attention? Because now I got another fork in the road. I now have to spend my summer taking a class that I thought wasn't needed. I obviously took and paid out of my own pocket for a course I didn't need to take. And I now get my diploma at the end of Summer, instead of at the end of Spring. I'm very upset at my school in general for telling me this now when I'm 7 weeks away from what I thought was going to be my graduation. *Sigh* Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Aviation Management Job when I graduate from college in May 2011--what to do until then?

Hello. I've been stop and go with college, getting full time jobs here and there. I will be graduaing in May 2011 with a B.S. in Business Technology and Management. I've held a few aviation related jobs from working the desk at a local flight school to Flight attendant for a regional. I quit the flight attendant job to finish up my college and the local flight school couldn't me on due to lack of business. I am interested in getting a job with Airline or Airport Management. Right now I have my eyes on Austin, TX. I need to move away from VT-- a little, expensive jobless state here in New England. Do you have any suggestions for me? Would trying to get my foot in the door before I graduate help? Right now I am working in a non-aviation field, would getting a job in the aviation biz be a good idea or does the fact that I worked at the flight school and was an FA look ok for now? I tried to get a summer internship at SWA but I wasn't accepted. Thanks for your time more
