Stress-less tips for new entrepreneurs
Answer: One of the biggest surprises that comes to someone leaving the corporate world and entering that of an entrepreneur is just how much there is to do . . . and there is no one else who is going to do it for you. It can easily become both a source of frustration and overwhelm, taking you away from what the passion that brought you here in the first place. In order to keep yourself focused, Janet Neal of The Professional Women's Center in Montclair, N.J. has these tips:
1) Focus. What is your No. 1 priority? If you can identify this (and in a business, it's usually to make the money to sustain it!), you can always use that as a guide.
2) Prioritize. Use a system which helps you decide what absolutely needs to be done today, what could wait till tomorrow and what could wait until whenever you get to it. more

Value managers' shopping trolleys
Analysis of Moneyweb's Unit Trust Portfolio Tool shows value-fund managers were shopping mostly in the financial and industrial sectors of the JSE last quarter. This even applies to those managers who owe their recent outperformance to resources shares.
One example is the RMB Value Fund, the top performer over the past 12 months in the value sector, according to Equinox data. The RMB Fund had relatively low exposure to banks - even at the end of last quarter. Its performance had been bolstered by high resources exposure, it's largest holding being BHP Billiton (JSE:BIL).
Fund manager Stephen Brown tells Moneyweb that his fund has been buying banks as prices have fallen to more attractive levels. "We think the risk of losing money [on banks] is fairly low," says Brown. more
Plan Gore substitutes pipe dreams for pipelines
The result, as energy entrepreneur T. Boone Pickens so aptly points out, is a huge spike in the percentage of foreign oil America imports, from 24 percent in 1970 to almost 70 percent today.
Oh, yeah, and while we weren't expanding drilling to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or off the California and Florida coasts, Americans continued to buy gas-guzzling cars as they waited for miracle cars magically to appear. Until one day, prices at the pump jumped the $4 per gallon mark. Let me be clear: A smart energy policy must include incentives to increase the development and production of wind, solar and geothermal power as well as other alternative sources of energy. The serious advocate for carbon-free, affordable power would include nuclear power, which provides 20 percent of America's electricity, and cleanly, into the mix. moreLatest Business School Top Ten News

Resolved Question: Chances at these colleges?
Hi. I am a junior in high school and I want to know how I stack up. I want to be a business major with possible minors in film studies or history. I have 3.8 unweighted gpa, 4.375 weighted. I have over 200 hours of community service. I am involved with ASB, CSF, NHS, tutoring underclassmen, mentoring underclassmen, theatre, my church, every fifteen minutes, and I am on honor guard (top ten girls in the school based on academics, service, ect.) I also have a job. My SAT is extremely low, 1640, but I am retaking it within the next week. My ACT score is a 28. I have taken a total of 6 honors/ap classes and I am taking 3 more next year. I got a 640 on my world history SAT II test, with a 3 on the AP test. The colleges I am interested in are USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, UCSD, UCSB, Azusa Pacific, San Deigo State, Long Beach State, and Fullerton. If it helps, I would be a legacy at USC. What are my chances of getting in to each of these colleges? Thanks! moreResolved Question: Is this a good story to you?
*Please continue reading through the additional details. It is quite long story soz for that. (an action man is a doll kids play with) “Let me give you a tip,” he said, watching me carry hanger loads of clothes up to the guest bedroom. At that moment, I was looking more for a helping hand than fatherly advice. He used his pointer finger to motion me over to the guest bathroom. “Do your business. Flush. Wipe. Flush. Finish up, and flush again. And we use two ply so don’t go hog wild. It’s like using double the paper and the pipes aren’t that big.” I assumed at 29 years old I had everything under control in the potty training department. That didn’t mean my father wouldn’t try and teach me a thing or two. He never stopped lecturing so why should bathroom procedure and protocol be an uncovered subject. The month of living with my parents before my condo was finished was going to be excruciating. For years, my father and I fought a silent war in regard to the bathroom. A notorious neat freak, he would “tidy up” my bathroom while I was at school or work. Unlike a great thief, my father always left obvious clues. He’d remove the label from my toothpaste so that the white tube matched the counter top, the soap dispenser, and the rest of the bleached clean bathroom. He left the shower head pointed to the ceiling so all the excess water could drip out, to prevent rusting. He refolded the hand towels to hang neatly from the towel rings bolted into to the retro sun flower wall paper. He squeegeed the glass shower doors to prevent mildew build-up. His specialty? The spotless mirror that he wiped down with paper towel and a few shots from the bottle of Windex he kept attached to his belt like a six shooter. He was like a new sheriff in town. The toilet was the catalyst for most of the wars. I clogged it at least three times a week. Overuse of toilet paper. My father kept the plunger in the garage. I would have to pass him in the living room to get it and bring it back to my bathroom. He kept a mental record of how many times I used it. I think he even knew when I used it when he was at work, pressing the rubber end against his cheek to check for moisture. Most times, I could handle the unclogging myself. On one occasion, I convinced myself it wasn’t clogged, it just needed some additional water pressure to get the paper down. So I kept slapping the handle like a sailor tapping out Morse code. The water rose faster then my erection during mixed gym class and came rushing out of the bowl. I ran past my parents and into the kitchen for a roll of paper towels. My father noticed the roll in my hand and commented to me as I sprinted down the hall. “You wipe your *** with those and so help me God I will use that mop-top head of yours to dry my car.” He appeared behind me as I knelt on the floor and tried to sop up the murky brown water. “Oh for the love of Christ!” he yelled, pushing me aside to clean the mess himself. “Go get the mop out of the laundry room.” That night he forbid me to sh*t in the house anymore. He would leave a shovel and a flash light on the back porch. Walk at least twenty paces then add ten for good measure. The next porcelain bowel catastrophe happened in my senior year of college. I moved back home because I didn’t have enough credits to qualify as a full time student. I took over my old room and bathroom. At dinner, my mother mentioned that the water pressure in the toilet seemed off. I swore this time I had nothing to do with it. I hadn’t gone number two all day. My mother refreshed my memory of the information that need not be shared at the dinner table. After a detailed inspection, my father announced that the toilets were indeed malfunctioning. He called a plumber. After another detailed inspection, this time by a professional, my father found out that the problem was worse then he suspected. The blockage was deep in the pipes. It wasn’t toilet paper. My father came into my room and stood in front of the television to get my attention. “This is going to be your one chance to come clean. What did you stuff down the toilet?” I was enraged. For once, this had nothing to do with me or my carelessness. I thought that my dinner time revelation that I hadn’t sh*t all afternoon absolved me of all guilt. “I think I would know if I clogged the toilet.” I yelled. “What do you think I shoved an Action Man down there?? What am I, eight years old?” The plumber told my father that he would have to snake the toilet to find the blockage. If that didn’t work he would have to find the outlet on the lawn, dig it up, and snake it out from there. This went from a minor concern to a major incident. The only other thing my father obsessed over beside the cleanliness of the house was his professionally manicured lawn.In the twenty five years he lived there, my father single-handedly helped put the landscaper’s three kids through Ivy League schools. Cutting, mulching, spraying, feeding, seeding and watering. Neighbours would come over just to stand on it. Out of respect, dog walkers made their pets pinch their a*ses until they passed by, just so they wouldn’t sh*t on my father’s lawn. It made the 18th at Augusta look like a county park. My mother lit candles on the front porch, praying for the lawn, the toilet, and my father’s blood pressure. The plumber found the release on the front lawn, and opened it with the delicate touch of a surgeon. My father and I peered down the hole over his head. I imagined this was how the rescuers felt as they analyzed the well after baby Jessica did a swan dive to the bottom. My father still wasn’t convinced of my innocence. His stare made me second guess my own innocence. Did I really use the bathroom and forget? I started to replay the entire day in my head. I left the house in a rush. I returned home from class at 2:30 and made a ham and cheese sandwich. I played video games for a half hour until my girlfriend came over. We watched MTV for five minutes. FD set him up for the Superplex again and got it with no problem this time. He went for the pin. 1... 2... KICKOUT! I'm writing a 2 stories and I want to know what you think of the first chapter of each one and which one you prefer. 1) Chapter 1- New life I woke up feeling tired, it took me a minute to realize where I was. I was at my Nan's house, I had only moved in yesterday because my parents had died yesterday. I was seventeen and now an orphan. “Yasmin?” my Nan called softly opening my door. “Morning.” I yawned. “Oh, are you feeling okay?” she came and sat on my bed. “Yeah, but I didn't know where I was when I woke up...” I looked around the purple room which once was my mother's. “Well, how about you eat some breakfast and unpack your clothes.” she stood up and walked out of the room. I stood up and walked into my bathroom, I washed my face and brushed my teeth. I walked out and unpacked a few clothes so I could change. I sighed as I looked at the top, my mother had given to me for my sixteenth birthday. I missed her, only yesterday morning had I gave her kiss and walked out of the house, only to come back and find my house in pieces and my both parent's bodies being pulled out. Tears started to roll down my face. I didn't know how I was going to get through the day without sobbing. I pulled on my jeans and the purple top and brushed my long black hair. It took me ten minutes to fix it, I had a really bad night last night, I couldn't stop crying and I kept having nightmares. I wiped my tears and ran down the stairs. “Morning Gramps.” I greeted, sitting in a chair next to him. “Morning kiddo.” he gave me a hug and went back to his newspaper. “Gramps! I'm not a kiddo anymore! I'm seventeen!” I managed to hold a grin. I pulled out a carton of cereal and poured some into a bowl. After pouring some milk in I settled down and ate it all. I got up and washed the bowl in the freezing water. “Yas, dear, why don't you unpack your clothes and all your other things?” Nan suggested. I nodded and walked up the stairs. I looked down, there was only one bag. I sighed and unpacked the few clothes I had left. I pulled open the wardrobe door and it was half full of clothes already, I gasped, they were all my size. I remembered that this used to be my mother's room and that these must be her old clothes. I pulled a black pleated skirt and a black designer top out. I tried it on and it fit perfectly showing off my figure. I grinned and carried on putting my own clothes in. I looked underneath and there were all off my mother's shoes and sandals. I knew they were my size so I didn't bother trying them on. I pulled my phone, Ipod and laptop out. I had these on me yesterday, as I was taking them to my friends house. I sighed, there was a new message on my phone. I clicked on the inbox and opened the message. Be safe.... Mom...x Tears immediately started to trickle down my cheeks. If only she had followed it herself, she and my Father wouldn't be dead. I curled up on the bed and started crying. I never really saw my Father, he was a business man who traveled to promote products. He used to come home and give me presents from all around the world, but now they were all destroyed. Nearly everything in the house was from different places, I remember on my ninth birthday, my father came home and gave me and my Mother matching gold necklaces, I never took mine off. My Father had come home yesterday after a month of being abroad. I gave him a massive hug and left for my friends house to pickup my laptop, which she had borrowed. At least I got to say a proper goodbye. I hadn't planned for my parents to die this early, they were only thirty-seven. I didn't think I was going to have to live with my Nan either. My Nan's house is a three hour drive away from my burnt house, I would never feel less at home then now. If course I loved the fact that it was my Nan and not an adoptive Mother but I missed my friends and school. I had to go back to get my things from the school tomorrow for the new school I would join the day after, I dreaded it. I looked up from my flash back and wiped my eyes. I jumped off the bed and looked into the mirror, my eyes were an odd shade of purple, I had no idea why, in my baby pictures I had turquoise eyes, which turned to lilac, which soon turned a true shade of violet. I never understood it. I was still wearing my Mothers old clothes. They had creased. I looked at my pitch black hair, my father had it too, I longed to have my Mothers light brown hair. My Mother also had dimples which I had and pale skin. My smile was a replica of my Father's. I looked away from the mirror and at my phone, some of my best friends had no idea what had happened. I called my closest friend, Lilly Clemence. “Hello?” she answered. “Hello? Lils?” “Oh, Yas, where were you today?!” she sounded worried. “Lils, chill, theres something really important to tell you.” I started. “What is it, are you okay?!” “I'm fine, well, not really, look, yesterday went I came over to yours to get the laptop, I came home moreResolved Question: Top Ten Rappers of All Time?
Many people may have problems with the list i have compiled, and if you do, rather than posting that my list is garbage, or that i'm not a real hip hop fan, name a few songs by artists you feel I have overlooked, and i will check them out. Before the list, i just want to tell everyone about my experience with hip-hop. I am 19 years old, and attend university, where I am majoring in Philosophy. Growing up, i heard some hip-hop on the radio, and playing on my older brothers stereo, but for some reason it never really appealed to me till I got to high school (coincidentally, i also discovered weed at this time). The first CD i purchased was Game's the Documentary, and i still love that CD, although Game doesn't quite make the cut for top 10. I later got Ice Cube's Laugh Now, Cry Later, Young Buck's Buck the World, the greatest hits CDs of Biggie and 2pac, and a couple of subs in the trunk. I've been hooked ever since. In the last few years, I have made an effort to diversify my listening, within the rap genre. Just a year ago, I discovered Outkast, and even more recently, I began listening to R.A. The Rugged Man, Bone-Thugs, and Clipse to name a few. Anyway, enough back-story, heres my list. 1. Eminem Top Song(s): I'm Back, Business, Rainman, Old Times Sake, Elevator, The Real Slim Shady 2. I need some advice, because some of the decisions I will be making in the next few weeks could have a major impact on my future. I am currently a freshman at a college in Tennessee, and I am planning on transferring to Texas A&M University for Fall 2010, because of my girlfriend. Here is some background information: My girlfriend, who is a senior in high school, is a family oriented, very intelligent beautiful girl. We have been dating for a little over 2 years, never broken up. We are both pretty intelligent, rational thinkers and are very in love. Her parents are quite wealthy, and everyone in there family attends/graduated from Texas A&M. She applied to/got accepted to many other colleges, but didnt really have a choice because it just made sense for her to continue the legacy at Texas A&M . They have lived in tennessee all of her life, and are building a new house on a golf course right outside Texas A&M. She will be moving in the summer, because she got accepted. I am applying as a transfer student and I just want to make sure it is the right decision. I have prayed about it, I have thought about it as much as possible, and I have support from both her family and my family. It is such a big decision because it involves large amounts of money in tuition that I would have to borrow, and It is just a big commitment in general. Just recently, I found out my parents were getting divorced, and It shook me pretty hard. I want to get away from it all, and start a new life in Texas. My girlfriend lately has gone into protective mode, where she is sort of distant. I asked her about it, and she said she thinks it was just her preparing herself for if I don't get accepted. I re-assured her that my credentials are good enough, and that I will get in one way or another, and now she is back to normal. I know that if I do move there, we will get married after we are both through college. I am a business major, and i am applying to Mays school of Business, which is one of the top ten business schools in the nation. I just want some advice/feedback as to what other people would do in my situation. It feels right, but it just so un ordinary. Most girls follow guys, you know? A few of my close friends know my situation, and agree that it is a good choice, and a few say that I am crazy. Let me know what you think, because this is really important to me. moreResolved Question: What do u think of Ron Paul's article: " Keynesianism Delivers a Decade of Zero "?
" Texas Straight Talk A weekly column Keynesianism Delivers a Decade of Zero This past week we celebrated the end of what most people agree was a decade best forgotten. New York Times columnist and leading Keynesian economist Paul Krugman called it the Big Zero in a recent column. He wrote that “there was a whole lot of nothing going on in measures of economic progress or success” which is true. However, Krugman continues to misleadingly blame the free market and supposed lack of regulation for the economic chaos. It was encouraging that he admitted that blowing economic bubbles is a mistake, especially considering he himself advocated creating a housing bubble as a way to alleviate the hangover from the dotcom bust. But we can no longer afford to give prominent economists like Krugman a pass when they completely ignore the burden of taxation, monetary policy, and excessive regulation. Afterall, Krugman is still scratching his head as to why “no” economists saw the housing bust coming. How in the world did they miss it? Actually many economists saw it coming a mile away, understood it perfectly, and explained it many times. Policy makers would have been wise to heed the warnings of the Austrian economists, and must start listening to their teachings if they want solid progress in the future. If not, the necessary correction is going to take a very long time. The Austrian free-market economists use common sense principles. You cannot spend your way out of a recession. You cannot regulate the economy into oblivion and expect it to function. You cannot tax people and businesses to the point of near slavery and expect them to keep producing. You cannot create an abundance of money out of thin air without making all that paper worthless. The government cannot make up for rising unemployment by just hiring all the out of work people to be bureaucrats or send them unemployment checks forever. You cannot live beyond your means indefinitely. The economy must actually produce something others are willing to buy. Government growth is the opposite of all these things. Bureaucrats are loathe to face these unpleasant, but obvious realities. It is much more appealing to wave their magic wand of regulation and public spending and divert blame elsewhere. It is time to be honest about our problems. The tragic reality is that this fatally flawed, but widely accepted, economic school of thought called Keynesianism has made our country more socialist than capitalist. While the private sector in the last ten years has experienced a roller coaster of booms and busts and ended up, nominally, about where we started in 2000, government has been steadily growing, because Keynesians told politicians they could get away with a tax, spend and inflate policy. They even encouraged it! But we cannot survive much longer if government is our only growth industry. As for a lack of regulation, the last decade saw the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the largest piece of financial regulatory legislation in years. This act failed to prevent abuses like those perpetrated by Bernie Madoff, and it is widely acknowledged that the new regulations contributed heavily not only to the lack of real growth, but also to many businesses going overseas. Americans have been working hard, and Krugman rightly points out that they are getting nowhere. Government is expanding steadily and keeping us at less than zero growth when inflation is factored in. Krugman seems pretty disappointed with zero, but if we continue to listen to Keynesians in the next decade instead of those who tell us the truth, zero will start to look pretty good. The end result of destroying the currency is the wiping out of the middle class. Preventing that from happening should be our top economic priority. Posted by Ron Paul (01-04-2010, 01:36 PM) filed under Monetary Policy "vani he had the solutions BEFORE the crash last year, but people like you wanted him to shut up about the problem. Isn't it time to start listening?Heather, it is amusing. They tend to emit a cloud of technical jargon designed to confuse the listener, which refers to models only necessary -- or even relevant -- if you accept the Keynesian principles to begin with. moreResolved Question: From a third-tier university MBA program to Ivy League Law School?
I was just wondering how realistically I would have a shot at going to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, or Cornell Law School? I have a Bachelors of Business Administration from the University of Memphis with an undergraduate GPA of 3.3. I also have 5+ years of professional work experience in the area of technology. I have since gone back to get my Masters of Business Administration from the University of Memphis and plan to graduate with a 3.85 GPA. After I obtain my MBA, I am going to join the peace corps for two years. After my peace corps service, I aspire to go to an Ivy League law school. Will my undergraduate grades or third-tier status of my college severely hurt my chances? I am not worried about the LSAT, I've always scored in the top ten percentile of any standardized test that I've taken. I was hoping my graduate school GPA would overshadow my undergraduate work. moreResolved Question: YAEWF Blaze Episode 1!! Results - Star and Promo - Who will win the Royal Rumble?

Before you read on, this is a VAMPIRE story. If you have anything against vampires, then just don't read this. It is in no way like Twilight - I started writing this story before the Twilight craze and have only just stumbled across it. Right, back to business. I am thirteen, and have been writing this story. I wanted to know what you think. Any criticism will be taken in, good or bad. ‘Desired name:’ I have gone through my fair share of names in the past five centuries, but it was only now that I struggled for a different one. For half a century or so, I would normally keep my surname, but I would change my first name at least every decade. This time, I thought, why not? I might as well write down the name I was christened with almost five hundred years ago. Adelaide Panshawe, I scribbled down on the paper in a speed which no human eyes would have noticed. It would have been a scribble, but belonging to a rich family when I was young meant I was forced to be as graceful and perfect as possible in every aspect. It is an ancient name, but I doubt anybody would question its peculiar type much. I didn’t socialise much, I just got on with watching history being made. I found if I spoke to humans more, the harder it was to resist my temptation for what pulsed in their veins. I generally kept my distance, it was the easiest way. ‘About yourself (i.e. background, previous schools/homes):’ I thought about being true about my most recent past for once. I had been spending my last decade in a small town in Italy, making it look like I barely made enough to go by, with working in a petite shop which paid for my flat, which was just as small. Those around me never knew of my mansion which I had built myself, secretively in the woods. I could have bought a mansion ten times the size that I had made, but what would be the fun in that? It gave me something to do over the month I settled in. I wrote down that I had been living in Italy for the last three years of my life, attending a school in the town I lived in which wasn’t known of unless you lived in the town. I doubted that anybody would look into my past – there would be nothing suspicious about me which would cause such measures. I filled in the rest of the form, stating I would be in the last year of high school, which would make me eighteen. My aging froze when I was nineteen, I could barely pass at sixteen – so that age was out of the question. The age in my eyes made it difficult for me to pass as my body’s age, as did the way I spoke. Over time, I have trained myself to speak like the youth of today. It sort of comes naturally, but my aged way of speaking sometimes seeps through; it normally escapes when I’m distracted, as does my accent which is slowly fading as time goes on. I walked over to my fax machine and faxed my new identity to Mr Jackson, the person who has provided things like my birth certificate and drivers’ licence for forty years. I strode over to my open windows and enjoyed the last sunset I would see in Italy; it was a sunset I definitely wouldn’t forget. As my house was quite high up on its hill, I could see over the entire forest. The sun rose over the tree tops alone, with no fluffy clouds surrounding it. The sun set a ray of a collage of colours across the sky – pinks, oranges, yellows, it was beautiful. I exhaled as I turned away from the windows and stared at the study I was in. This had to be one of the favourite places I had stayed, hands down. It was modernised, with the newest technology in every corner you looked in. My fondness or today’s technology was baffling – being from the 16th century, I would be expected to hate anything new, anything that wouldn’t have been explainable back then. But I didn’t, I loved it all. In less than one second flat I was downstairs in my kitchen, looking for something interesting to eat. The fridge was full – the person who I would allow to rent out this mansion while I was away would be treated well. I decided on some cereal, which I downed in a small amount of time. What, surprised that I eat? The fact that I don’t eat is a myth, just like a lot of other characteristics made up about vampires. Yes, I am a vampire. But lately I have been on my best behaviour and have not killed anyone nor drank any blood. Vampires don’t need blood, it is just something which is hard to resist, and makes us stronger and our senses more sensitive. Since I have not drunk any blood in two months, I am starting to get used to not drinking it regularly. Thank you for reading it all, if you do. :) moreResolved Question: Struggling in college, and need good advice.?
Hi, I'm from a working class family. I just enrolled in an elite public college in my state last semester in the International Studies program to get into law school. I am 21 years old. Before I got into the state school, I was in a community college because wasn't that great of a student in high school and we didn't have any money to enroll me in a university out of high school. I recently changed my major into clinical psychology, after last semester's workload and the nature of their program (too business and economics focused) led me to become disenfranchised with my aspirations to become a lawyer. Every professor I've had so far had said I was very well-spoken, a smart student, and I become emotionally involved with the aspect of the study. When I was in community college, I had a 4.0 average for all five semesters. On top of that, I worked a job and was in the gym more or less for an hour a day. When I got into this university, I was overwhelmed by the amount of work they give the students- who, having been grandfathered into their curriculum out of high school, seem to accept this. Everyone I know studies, has a relatively high GPA, maintains this go-getter attitude, and has time for sports, music, and friends. I only found myself able to effectively complete and understand all of my work pulling all-nighters and absorbing excessive amounts of caffeine. I made a mistake last semester by working. It was my mother's (who is single) mandate that I maintain a job in order for her to give me a place to stay over break. My grades fell from the stellar 4.0 I had before entering to a staggering 2.3. None of my professors here were sympathetic. They all said "Manage your time. You'll get through this. You're smart." And off they went. I barely made it out last semester with the minimum credits for a full-time student. Now I'm taking an extra course to catch up, so in total, I'm taking sixteen credits this semester. I was doing fine for the first month, which is generally a baptism-by-fire type of workload. I still pulled all-nighters and drank coffee. I felt I was lacking in the social department since I had recently dropped going to the gym and decided to quit work to focus on studying and socializing, but keeping expenses to a minimum. I decided to become involved in Greek Life by joining a fraternity. I was hit by the ten-ton hammer that is pledge season. I am so behind in my schoolwork from missing so many consecutive classes due to lack of sleep and low motivation. Now I've hit rock-bottom. I have two B+'s, a C, and a C-. I'm completely unprepared for next week's final exams. I haven't read a quarter of the semester's workload. It seems irrational. The teachers here assign a week's load of work for a day, two of which we have per class. My community college friends who enrolled in other universities seem to be having it much easier. I feel that I've been dealt the wrong hand in life here by choosing to attend a prestigious school; sometimes I imagine transferring to another university, but I feel it's too late being a junior to start over. I don't see myself belonging here, amidst these robotic students with 3.5+ GPA's who eagerly take 18 credits a semester and enroll in organizations while having time for coffee with friends and going to parties. I've even lost interest in playing music, which is something I've always loved. I think this college and its high expectations are taking the best of me. People have said recently I've looked stressed, detached, and cold. I don't know what to do... I'm working 20 hours again to pay off pledge expenses. But now I feel like I'm not going to be able to go to grad school and will end up as a failure in life. How can I survive this next week, and what can I do about next semester? moreResolved Question: What do you think to this extract?

I am currently working on my application for a study abroad in the USA. Since my grades aren't the very best, I need to persuade the jury with my study proposal. This is basically a 2-page informational essay about the course of my life so far and my future goals, especially in education. I have received an education pretty focused on economics thus far and would therefore like to argue, that it would make the most sense for me to go to a college that has a very good reputation in the economics / business department. However, since, like I said, my grades aren't top notch, it can't be the most prestigious school either. The perfect fit would be a college that is generally seen as mediocre, but has a fine economics / business branch. The list of the colleges available is this: (Platz/Plätze = Number of available places) Duke University (Durham, North Carolina, 1 Platz) Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana, 2 Plätze) Middlebury College (Middlebury, Vermont, 1 Platz) Reed College (Portland, Oregon, 1 Platz) University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois, 1 Platz) University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1 Platz) Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Michigan, 1 Platz) Hampshire College (Amherst, Massachusetts, 1 Platz) Montana State University (Bozeman, Montana, 1 Platz) Rutgers University (Camden, New Jersey, 1 Platz) Tulane University (New Orleans, Louisiana, 4 Plätze) University of Arizona (Tucson, Arizona, 1 Platz) University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 1 Platz) University of California System (13 Plätze) (UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz) University of Colorado (Boulder, Colorado, 2 Plätze) University of Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky, 1 Platz) University of Maryland (College Park, Maryland, 1 Platz) University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 1 Platz) University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2 Plätze) University of Washington (Seattle, Washington, 1 Platz) So which of these would you recommend? I went to a top ten Undergraduate Business School (Cornell). My GPA stunk, with a 2.85. Even worse, I failed my Managerial Accounting course and it was one of the easier courses I had taken at Cornell. The course was graded off of the midterm and final only. The next year, I re-took the course. I aced the midterm, however, I got very sick when I had to take the final, didn't get a minute of sleep the night before the exam, and ended up getting 60 on it. So, I ended up with a C in the course the second time around. It's been over three years since I graduated. I still look back on this, and am astonished that I let myself fail a course, and then retake it and only get a C, when I could have Aced the course. It's honestly one of the biggest regrets I have in my life. Anyway, how will MBA admissions look at this? I mean, I can easily see them scratching their heads saying WOW he failed an accounting course? Retook it, and got a C? Is accounting that difficult for this guy?? It's depressing to think about! Also, I took the GMAT and scored a 710. moreResolved Question: Should I pursue a dual major, major and concentration, or simply my finance degree?
A little history about me: I am attending Colorado State University as a Sophomore after leaving the US Navy four months ago with four honorable years of service. I am 24 years old. Since I began college, I found there are many opportunities, resources, and directions that can help me pursue a career in investment/corporate finance. My goal is to find employment/internship with a “Top-Ten” company or a Wallstreet firm. My options: 1. Double major with Finance and Computer Information Systems (additional 39 credit hours): This was suggested by a career advisor at Colorado State University. However, may cost me an additional year at college. (2.5 yrs as opposed to 1.5 years). I am not concerned with the money, but whether the effort is worth my time. 2. Finance degree with a certificate in CIS (21 additional credit hours). This allows me to add more communications courses and more economics and accounting courses to help me become more competitive. 3. Finance degree with no certificate and simply add a load of additional personal development courses, such as: advanced speaking, writing, negotiating, statistics, and additional accounting and economics courses. 4. Finance with a minor in foreign language. This was suggested by a family member involved in finance. However, this program will limit me from taking additional courses, in that, each language course is 5 credit hours apiece and every week day. Feel free to recommend something else, but please explain why you are recommending that route with consideration to making me more marketable to potential employers while being competitive as well. CSU is not an excellent school for business, so consider how I might achieve a position with one of the top ten companies or wall street firms with many of my competition graduating from more prestigious universities (HBS, Wharton, Sloan,...). Finance degree with no certificate and simply add a load of additional personal development courses, such as: advanced speaking, writing, negotiating, statistics, and additional accounting and economics courses. 4. 2. I am currently an Undergraduate student and I have three semesters left until I get my Bachelors degree in Political Science and Economics. At the time of my graduation I plan on having a GPA in the 3.4 to 3.5 range along with a long work history and several extracurriculars that i am currently becoming involved in. After I graduate I plan on joining the Navy and take a shot at the SEALs. I eventually want to attend graduate school to complete a joint Law Degree/ Business degree program. My dream is to attend a school that is a top ten school in both of these categories. I was just curious if anyone had any knowledge and/or experience as to the SEALs effect on admissions, and the weight it would carry on my application. If anybody has any information or insight on this issue it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. moreResolved Question: What do you think of my story? PLEASE read.?
Prologue If I told you I was a normal teenage girl from Atlanta, I would be lying. There’s really nothing “normal” me. At age six my parents gave me ten bucks to go into the grocery store and get a box of cereal. I bought the cereal and sat on the bench for two straight days, waiting for my parents to return. Finally the store manager called Child Services. I stayed in a lot of group homes and learned that some people don’t care about how old you are before the steal away all your innocence. When I was nine, a teenage boy at a group home in New York raped me. When I told my social worker she told me that sometimes those things just happen. At ten, a nice couple decided to take me in for a while. They even took me to France. Which is where they left, sold me actually. To a man who needed an innocent face to deliver his drugs. That lasted about a year. Soon enough, I snuck away one night. Made it to Paris. There, I survived by stealing. Something I learned I had quite a niche for. First it was just food. An apple from the market, a banana, or perhaps even a biscuit from the bakery. But it got so easy. Pick pocketing, my next step up the latter. Men in business coats who constantly are counting their Euro and buying a ton of coffee, women who wear fur coats and lots of jewelry, teenagers who wear the top brand of clothing and walk with their heads held higher than everyone else. Those are the people I chose. People who could spare some. But still, I got bored. The first time I wanted something and decided to take it by force, came to a shock to even me. I was walking along the side walk and I saw it. A cross necklace. Diamonds on each end. White gold from the cross to the chain. Just like the one my momma had. But I was sure hers wasn’t real. Hers was just a dollar store necklace with some 2 cent rhinestones. This was the necklace I wanted and I was sure going to get. That night, I stayed in the ally way behind the store until 2:21 AM. I slid my backpack inside a crack in the brick wall. There I stood, slipping on my black gloves and spandex. My long black, curly hair was tied into a French roll and covered with a tight black hat. This time I had to be careful. This was a jewelry store. Pulling a medal nail file out of my pocket, I used to it to unscrew the out side vent. Two seconds later I was inside. A can of spray paint, a lock pick kit, and a rope with a harness. I was in, out, and hooking my necklace around my neck in 2 minutes 22 seconds. A start of an epidemic. Now I’m fourteen and one of the top thieves for higher in the world. Just call me Robin. Chapter One Sitting in a desk with my head down, appearing to be asleep, I listened intently to my science teacher. She is explaining genetics. How one is dominate over another. Things I already knew. Here I went by Atlanta George. Get it? Yea, I know, so sly. To my clients I’m known as Robin. But to myself, I realize I have no real name. No one ever called me by a name until a few years ago when I restarted school, and that was just a name I made up. Don’t sweat the small details with the whole parent/ guardian stuff. When you’re a thief, things like this are easy. Anyway, since I’m sure you don’t want to hear about how genetics are past from parent to offspring, I’ll catch you up on my current client. Jeffry Collins is a rich man that needs an unofficial hand getting a hold of some documents to keep his company out of a law suit that could probably take him for everything he’s worth. So he called me. These documents have been removed from every hard drive in his company’s files, but one copy remains. This copy is in a vault in the basement of the Bank of England. A job that will take time a thought. But I have until Thursday. The Bank of England was originally built in 1732 by George Sampson. So everything is old school. Real old school. The vault is in the basement. Each floor has 4 security guards except for the basement; there’s 6. One in each hallway and two in front of the vault. A challenge for a fourteen year old girl, right? Wrong! I could do this in my sleep! The problem is, Thursday night there is a ball. Security will be off the charts. Not only because the American Black President will be there but also the royal family. No children. Normally I can pass for 18-20 but any older I’m really pushing it. This time, I’m not going to be able to just walk in like I normally do with a fake ID and a formal dress. I’m going to have to be invisible to everyone there. So I was thinking, go in threw the vents, weasel into a locked elevator shaft, drop a couple stories, climb in some more vents, set off an alarm on the top floor, get the documents and get out. It’s a lot harder than most of my jobs, but it’s not the hardest. Besides, this man is offering half a million. With that I could- yeah, I don’t know what I could do it. Save it until I am out of school? Buy a private island with all the money I have in my “CollBuy a private island with all the money I have in my “College” saving account? Yeah, I don’t really know yet. Glancing at the clock and seeing it was 3:00, I grabbed my backpack and stood up just as the bell rang. I almost made it to the door before I heard Madam Beaumont’s high voice, screeching my name. “Atlanta! Atlanta!” Spinning around on my toes, I stared at her not attempting to hide my annoyance. “Yes?” I snapped. I was so tired of Madam Beaumont. She wouldn’t bother me near as much if she could learn how to keep her nose on her face instead of in my business. Somehow that seemed to be difficult for her. “Could your parents please come to the conferences tomorrow night? I’d very much like to speak with them,” she said taking a seat behind her wooden desk. Ugh, not this again! I rolled my eyes and tossed my backpack on the floor. “Madam, look. My parents work and they often can’t make it. Tomorrow Mom has a staff meeting and my father is talking to a client about aclient about a problem with their bank account. So don’t get your hopes up.” I knew she had more to say to me, but I grabbed my bag and got out of there. Man she annoyed me. Two buses and a long walk later, I made it home. A small cottage a few miles outside the city was my very first real home. First it was a shack with a broken window and the roof falling in. After my first real job and a hefty payment, I found some unofficial contractor to fix up my home. Amazing what people will do when you pay them ten grand in cash. It was small but it was home. I threw my backpack on the floor, and pulled out my 22 from underneath the couch cushions. Thursday was going to be a serious job, and if I got caught in that vault they aren’t going to hesitate to shoot me in the back a few dozen times. If I was going to do this job, I better get some target practice in. I stacked to hay bales and hung a target. It was a simple dart board design but it served its purpose. The Title is "If Robin Hood was a Woman, He'd Enjoy the Tights" In the first chapter Robin is talking about her most recent job and how she's going to do it, but when she actually goes to the Bank Ball she learns that she wasn't the only one the man hired for this job. He also hired a female grifter to get what he needs if Robin can't get it for him. Later Isabelle, the grifter, and Robin form a bond. For the first time Robin's not on her own and Isabelle is has someone to protect. A mother-daughter bond forms and it becomes dangerous when they get hired to con a mob. What do you think? Be brutal. moreResolved Question: What are my chances at University of Pennsylvania(Wharton)?

The school I go to is a Vocational High School, meaning that half the time, we study a 'shop.' Some of these include Culinary Arts, Plumbing, and IT. I am in Business Technology. Because my school has so much emphasis on the vocational study area, we do not get all of the classes offered at other schools. Examples: We have one foreign language: Spanish. The highest level you can go to in here is 4 or 5. We have to AP courses. Calculus, and History. I will only be able to get into history because I took Algebra I freshman year. We have limited science classes. We have biology, physics, and chemistry as the only honors and college prep classes. The rest are lower level/remedial classes. I took honors for the past two years, but in Junior/Senior year you can only get college prep. They do not offer courses like Psychology, which is one of the best for the field I wish to go in to (Special Education). In English, we get Honors, College Prep, and Regular. At the rate I am going, I will have honors all four years (95+ average every term, Outstanding Achievement Award last year) We also do not have the clubs that some schools offer. I recently got accepted into National Honor Society, and plan to join the Aviation Club next year, but nothing else really interests me. We have no drama clubs or anything. My school is one of the top ten Vocational Schools in the country, and everyone passes the standardized tests and whatnot. I just don't know if the lack of offerings in the academic department and extra curricular activities will hurt me. moreResolved Question: Can anyone edit my Illustration Essay Plz.?
Overcoming the Past It seems to me that so many people like to blame the past on whatever mistakes are made later on in life. After reading the newspaper, magazines, and autobiographies for many years, I get the feeling that people find it easy to recall the past and lay blame. Johnny who is teased unmercifully by his classmates grows up to commit premeditated murder. The blame lies with the classmates rather than Johnny’s poor choices and lack of control. Whether it was an abusive family, physical trauma, or just anything out of the ordinary, the past seems to play a part, especially when it comes to wrongdoing. However, one can get beyond the past. For instance, Oprah Winfrey suffered a terrible childhood. More than one adult abused her sexually. Her mother abandoned her when she was three years old. Relatives told Oprah the story of how her grandmother would “whip” her mother everyday. Then at the age of nine, a cousin raped Oprah, so sexual abuse was ongoing throughout her teens until she was sent to live with her father. Oprah could have used all of the trauma from her childhood for an excuse to sit around her adult life perhaps doing nothing or wreaking havoc on the rest of the world, blaming the past for her behavior. Instead, she overcame the trauma to become one of the most powerful and wealthiest people in the world. Her popular television talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, provides testimony to how she successfully overcame the past and developed a very fruitful life. I know people personally who have lived terrible lives in the past and went on to become successful later on in life. Growing up in the tight, little village in Monrovia, where everyone knew each other’s business, I recall a childhood friend who had a very difficult life. By today’s standards we were all poor. Nevertheless, most of the neighborhood consisted of hardworking parents raising their families, offering any security and love that they could. One little girl named Becky, however, seemed worse off than the rest of us. Her father drank; her mother sat around mostly and smoked cigarettes. Becky always seemed to be in her own little world. She would sit on the cluttered porch in her tattered clothes and worn out shoes when we were not in school. Her sad eyes peered out through her tousled hair covering her face. Sometimes Becky would play with the rest of us. I never remember her mother calling her in to eat dinner or paying much attention to this child. Her life did not seem as good as that of the rest of the children in the neighborhood. And to top it off, when she was about ten years old, her mother died! She was sent to live on another street in the neighborhood with her Aunt Rose. Much sadness surrounded this child, but today she is one of the most successful people in the community as an owner of her own Becky’s Pride dress shop and as a member of the local School Board. She did not let the sadness of childhood hinder her path to adulthood. Determination, strength, and character can overcome life’s traumas. And Becky certainly exemplifies this. Counselors, psychologists, and the media seem to dwell on the fact that trauma in a person’s life is what frequently causes social problems such as crime. Courts are filled with lawyers arguing their cases by using the past environment as a crutch for current poor choices of behavior. And yes, people like Jeffrey Dhamer, Son of Sam, and other notorious people who have committed horrible crimes blame these actions on their past. This seems to be an easy route to take in addressing serious, underlying problems. However, many people like Oprah and Becky have made the choice to overcome the past and have pursued very rewarding lives. They not only have created a productive life for themselves but also have reached out to others with assistance, direction, influence and support. Oprah and Becky offer a beacon of light in the direction of overcoming a difficult and challenging past. moreResolved Question: What are my chances at University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)?

This upcoming semester I will be going into highschool. i am in band, so i'll have to go to band camp over the summer, which my parents CONSTANTLY talk about how it'll be so hard for me to manage it and everything else - they do it so often that I want to quit band. I'm first chair in my section in the biggest junior high in my area... I love music, I absolutely love it, so i knew something was wrong when I actually debated quitting band this next year... It seems like my parents are TRYING to make me feel this way, so I won't 'set myself up for disappointment' as they have even said they've tried to do for me before, which doesn't help. I am taking some highschool courses at my school, and I passed the exams, so I want to take a 'p' instead of the letter grade, because I have a low B but a high score... They don't seem to understand that and argued with me over it for awhile... Generally I do okay - not excellent, like all A's perfect attendence - but better than a lot of kids... My parents have been ragging on me for two bad grades I made about FOUR MONTHS AGO... I took the ACT test last year through a program they were trying to develop in our school and I made a 22 on the test. Soon I got lots of pamphlets from top highschools and colleges.. A couple days after I made the bad grade I received another pamphlet from a top highschool up state.. They basically told me 'to forget it' if I keep making such bad grades like that.. It's not much of an excuse, but I was sick when i took those tests. Of course I'm not going to do as great as possible, at least I try. Like every year we have awards at the end of the semester.. My mom got upset that I only received one award while another kid received, like, 20. They're not even for anything that important! It's for the teachers to decide who they liked the best over the year. Besides that, they're borderline mentally/emotionally abusive. I remember once, I had basically had a nervous breakdown after trying them to tell them how depressed I was, and said I wanted to give up (not on life, just give up in general) . I was crying a lot, and they just stood watching me, calling me 'turtle' and other things because I was trying to hide my face because it was so embarassing for them to see me cry. My mom said that 'maybe I should see a counselor', almost jokingly, to which my dad replied,' screw the counselor, she needs a (deleted) shrink,' which I thought was really hurtful. I'm still insecure about telling people my feelings.. I've been to the lowest of low in life, at ten years old.. I'm pretty sure you can figure out what I mean. My grandmother has cancer of the lungs... The hospital didn't know where it had originated from because it'd gotten so bad it got in her blood. They messed up on the scan and then later discovered that it had come from her lungs. Everyone is giving up on her, and it's not fair to her. I know I'm whining about my grades and my parents and I know that will pass eventually, but they are giving up on her! Her son, my father, told her that she will probably die, only a few days after she was diagnosed! They have just started therapy. Apparently she'd had the cancer since October of last year. My father has to stay with my grandfather a lot because he is so old and weak and has heart problems that he can't take care of himself. My uncle on my mother's side has a wife that literally tells him that she hopes he gets hit while he's out jogging, and they suspect she's tried to kill him before, but he can't get divorced because he'll lose his job... He runs a business from home while taking care of the kids. She's 'sick' and manages to take 8 prescription medicines, a few of which cause suicidal tendencies and agression. They have five children all under the age of six, and they know things they shouldn't know. They're four year old tells her father that she hates her mother... It's horrible, and my grandparents on my mom's side have to take care of them a lot and might have to move across the state, which means the only family I'll have down where I live are my parents. It seems my and my family's lives are falling apart.. Lots of them don't know each other's problems because we don't really communicate to each other because of a lot of family fighting, so they settle for the next best thing - me, and that's hard for a 14 year old to deal with along with everything else. Yes, I realize people have it a lot worse than me. I realize this could be taken as whining, and if it is, I'm sorry. I try to be sensitive to others' situations. This kind of happened all at once for me, and it's too much, considering I don't really tell anyone what is going on because I'm afraid. I know I'm not the worst, by far, and I pray for those who have it worse. Honestly, I just need to vent and get some advice, because I'm at the point where I feel like breaking down at the slightest thing. Thanks for reading this.my parents basically call me stupid sometimes - sorry, i didn't have enough room moreVoting Question: Top ten business schools in US and what GPA needed to get into each school?

Heres the first part: “Where did you get those shoes, the Salvation Army?” Worshipped and feared mean girl Claire von Ruben strikes again. We weren’t even ten minutes into our junior year of high school and she was already burning out the freshies. It figured. She was, of course, one of the legendary three queen bees of East Heights Preparatory School for Young Ladies. That gave her the right to rule the school, according to her popular-but-not-as-popular-as-her posse of lowly worker bees that would spit shine her shoes for her if she told them to. The fact that her dad was a world-renowned business man had for some reason put her on top at our school. Maybe it was because she could afford tuition, a Mercedes, and the limited Dolce and Gabanna heels that everybody else wanted but couldn’t afford; everyone, that is, except for Giovanna Sinclaire, and Claire’s own twin sister, Olivia. These were the three bees of E.H.P, all powerfully reigning over the school. Claire and Gi were best friends – competitive best friends, constantly trying to out-do each other. I personally believe that Malaysia is the best country to open a new Disneyland. Malaysia is on top of the list for Southeast Asia most visited nation and 3rd in Asia region just after China and Hong Kong and France being the most visited nation in the world. The total population of Malaysia is about 27 million and is made up of different ethnic groups and races. The population of Malaysia is relatively young and it is very important for Disneyland because young people have great willing to try this kind of services. The 0-15 age group constitutes approximately 39% of the population and 57% of the population is in the 16-64 working-age group. Also, due to the multi-cultural influence here, many Malaysians can speak many languages, like Mandarin, Arabic or English. English language is the second language and is taught in schools. Most of Malaysians speak English fluently so it gives a great advantage over different countries because good understanding of English helps when you dealing with business partners. Violent crime involving tourists and in Malaysia is relatively uncommon. According to the Crime Statistic figures, Malaysia has relatively low crime rate and it is one of ten safest countries. It is very important because tourists must fell safety. The law of Malaysia is mainly based on the common law legal system and it is actually a country that welcomes foreign investments. In Malaysia it is relatively easy to set-up a business. When you are doing a business in you have to remember that sometimes is difficult for people in Malaysia to say “no” or to deliver bad news and they don’t always take the word “yes” to mean “I agree”. You also need to be sensitive to the ethic background of contact. Do not give alcohol or pork-based items to Muslim and avid sharp objects or clocks when dealing with the Chinese. Some provinces observe Friday as the day of rest and close for business so the owner of Disneyland must consider localization of the business. moreResolved Question: Do recruiters view MBM's equivalent to MBA's?
mbm - master of business management I go to a top ten school and I am planning on getting an mba in the future. However, the mba program at my school often weights work experience very heavily in admissions, and I think i have a better chance at getting into the MBM program, which is offered through the business school in conjunction with other departments. Will getting an MBM instead of an MBA from a top ten school change how recruiters will view my application when i apply to jobs? Is MBM worse? moreResolved Question: Does this look good to you?

What do you consider worthy of tribute about him/her? oList his/her admirable traits oCreate a list of 5 to 10 interview questions that you would ask this person if given the opportunity to interview him or her. Consider using words and phrases such as: justify, explain, evaluate, “to what extent”, classify, describe, determine, implement, defend, etc. (See list of possible words to use in formulating a question) oIf you had an opportunity to thank this person, what would you thank him/her for? If your speech is about a famous person, you must make sure they are accurate…keep track of them on work-cited page. If your speech is about a person who is not famous, then you must use interviews, old local newspaper articles, old family albums, etc.) Step Three: Plan and Decide (Create Outline of Speech) – due Thursday, January 15 Decide which information you will use from your research. Plan the best way to organize your information into an effective speech. Create an outline of your speech (please put details on the outline) Example of how you might organize speech: oQuote or eye-opening fact; statistic; etc…hook oBiography of Individual oAccomplishments oWhy tribute to this individual? **Step Four: Create Full Written Draft of Speech – Due Tuesday, January 20 Create your manuscript with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Present and Evaluate Speeches (4 to 6 minutes) and this is what i have so far: January 21, 2009 English 10 Barack Obama was born August 4, 1961. Honolulu , Hawaii , USA . His full name is Barack Hussein Obama Jr.; which means “Blessed by God”, in Arabic He was born to a white American mother, Ann Dunham. And a black father, Barack Obama, Sr. they both were students at the University of Hawaii . His father left to Harvard while his wife and son stayed behind. His father went back to Kenya where he worked as an economist. Barack’s mother remarried an Indonesian. He worked as an oil manager. His father would write to him, but due to his business, he visited his son only once, and that was when Barack was ten. Barack managed to go to one of Hawaii ’s top prep academy, which is Punahou School . Then later on Barack attended Columbia University . He became a community organizer for a small Chicago church for three years. He helped poor south side people deal with a wave of plant closing. Then he attended Harvard Law School . In 1990 he became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. Then in Chicago he practiced civil-rights law. In 2004 Barack Obama was elected to the U.S senate as a Demarcate representing Illinois . Then in November, 2008 he ran for president as a democrat and won! And now he is the 44th president of the United States and the first African- American running for president. Barack Obama’s greatest accomplishment is his family, His two daughters and wife. He is worthy of my tribute speech because he is the very brave and he is the first African- American president. And because he is Step One- investigate/design I look up to this person because he has done many good things. THANKS =D moreResolved Question: Who likes Harry Potter? (I do.)?
Okay for you Twilight haters or Harry Potter haters don't bother wasting my time. In my opinion Harry Potter surpasses Twilight but I love reading the Twilight series very much. So don't go bashing them. Whoever does or is thinking about it... grow up. Anyway this is an essay I wrote on Harry Potter that I'd like you to read. It is a VERY rough copy and also pretty long. So you don't have to read it. Let me remind you I'm only in 8th grade. I had to write it on my favorite series to try and convince some students to read it. (Basically haters.) Thanks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If I had the time, I could think of hundreds of different reasons why you should love Harry Potter; maybe even thousands! Many people claim that they don’t like the Harry Potter books. But that’s only because they’ve never read them… These top ten reasons are the first that came to mind, but they only skim the surface. 10)Genre- The Harry Potter books are fantasy. However, when you read them, it doesn’t seem like fantasy. The books are believable. What I mean is that even though there are magic and mythical creatures, it seems real. The way the books are written makes it seem like having magic is a regular part of everyday life; sort of like there’s magic in our world too. Since the books are about the people, not the magic, they hook the reader. So, even people who hate fantasy can enjoy Harry Potter. 9)Humor- A lot of the time the stories are grim and dark. But the author never hesitates to put a little humor in. Whether it’s a stink bomb in the Great Hall or a boy’s embarrassing dress robes with lace; J.K. puts it in. It lightens up the story even if only for a few moments. 8)Magic- In the books the magic is AMAZING! There are fantastic spells, potions, enchantments, hexes, and jinxes. One of my favorite hexes is called ‘petrificus totalus’. When cast, it locks your opponent’s skeleton together. They fall to the floor; unable to move or speak. There are dark spells too, of murder and torture. As the books go on, Harry learns more and more about dark magic. There are three Unforgivable Curses: The Cruciatus; curse of torture, The Imperius; curse of control, and the finally the death curse; Avada Kadavra. He survives all three. 7)Separate Books- Each book in the Harry Potter Series has its own separate adventure. Every one of them has a different story line. They follow Harry as he learns and grows. Each year at school is a different book. Even though it’s a series, the author doesn’t keep you waiting at the end of the book. Something major has been accomplished by Harry and he goes off for another summer at the Dursleys (his evil aunt and uncle). There is a sense of closure to each piece. 6)Team- Harry’s ‘team’ is always with him. Together Harry, Hermione, and Ron, conquer what they couldn’t alone. His friends never falter to appear at his side, even when he doesn’t need them. It’s nice to see the main character rely on them instead of having to do everything himself. The strength of his friendship with them helps him accomplish a lot more. 5)Thinking Ahead- I love how J.K. Rowling makes little things in earlier books become extremely important in later books. Many things that are casually mentioned and are barely noticeable turn out to be of great significance in the books to come. For example; one day Harry, Hermione, and Ron walked into a pub called the Hog’s Head. The pub owner was there minding his own business, wiping glasses. The three children barely took notice of him, except when they ordered their drinks. Then, in the last book, the owner turned out to be very important. He was the brother of Albus Dumbledore, a beloved lost friend. He helped them uncover mysteries about Dumbledore and even saved their lives! 4)Conflicts- Every kind of conflict in literature, is presented in these books. First of all, you can see evidence of Man to Man conflicts. There are tons of battles, and wars, and fights, and duels. Secondly, Man against Society comes into play. The government, or as the magical world calls it, the Ministry of Magic, always interferes with Harry’s plans. Sometimes the government hates him, and sometimes they try to use him as an icon! Next, there’s Man against Self. Harry can never figure out what to do next. Nothing is easy to decide on. Almost every choice he can make leads him into trouble. J.K. Rowling is constantly showing Harry as indecisive. This illustrates him growing up. The fourth conflict is Man against Nature. There isn’t much of this type of conflict, but at certain times Harry finds himself running from famished giant spiders, or being taken down by a ruthless, angry willow tree. Last, but definitely not least, is (drum roll please…) Man against Fate. Throughout the whole series (even though Harry doesn’t know for quite some time), he has to dodge the fact that it is his destiny, or fate, to kill so moreResolved Question: Chances of getting into Wharton?

I need some help here. I am planning to go into business academia and I am in the process of applying to different schools. I went for the Top Ten Schools for a PhD in Accounting (6 of them are Ivy Leagues). My friends have been trying to convince me to lower my sights or end up wasting money on application fees. They believe my background isn't solid enough to get me into those schools. I am 26 years old; I earned my accounting bachelor with a GPA of 3.83 and since none of the programs require a MBA, I intend on starting right away with doctoral studies. I have won several honors and scholarships and I was the head tutor of the accounting lab in my university. The only problem is that my GRE scores were a disaster (Quant-700, Verbal-490, Analytical-4.0). My friends told me that people with much better scores and undergrad and grad GPAs of 4.00 still do not get into Ivy League, and therefore I do not stand a chance. I still want to take a shot at it and will like to have the input of the Yahoo community. Thanks for your help. PS: I am currently working as an auditor and I am in the process of earning my CPA license, thus I do not have the time to study to re-take the GRE exam. moreResolved Question: WHAT COLLEGE CAN I APPLY TO (TEN POINTS)?
