Liberals claim marketing cruel blow

THE Liberals have accused the State Government of leaving the Bass Strait islands "off the map" in a new tourism marketing campaign.

Liberal MP Sue Napier said yesterday the islands had been dealt a cruel blow by not being given their own Tourism Tasmania "zone marketing" despite an earlier promise.

Tourism Minister Paula Wriedt has dismissed the allegations as nonsense.

Mrs Napier said rather than the traditional three marketing areas, there now would be five.

They are Hobart and surrounds, the East Coast, Launceston Tamar and the North, the North-West and the Western Wilderness. King Island will be absorbed by the North-West and Flinders Island will be part of the East Coast zone.

Initial correspondence between Tourism Tasmania and Flinders Council showed that the islands would be their own zones, Mrs Napier said. more

Resolved Question: Is there an advantage in obtaining admissions & scholarship by pursuing the IB Diploma...?

...program in American universities? My son is in the 9th Grade (Science Stream) in a good school in Kolkata, India. He has been offered a 100% scholarship from the ministry of education at the Anglo Chinese School (Independent) in Singapore. This happened just out of the blue and we were not prepared for it. I had always thought that the best time to go away from family to purse higher education would be for Post graduate studies after his graduation in India. However this opportunity has knocked on his door and we are not too sure whether it will be to his advantage. We are financially independent but a scholarship is always appreciated. I run a medium size distribution business but do not expect my son to join the same. I would like him to pursue a proffessional carrier. I do expect him to go out of India either after high school or graduation since in India the competition for admission in premium universities is exceptionally high. Only 0.01 % children can expect to get admission in premium institution. Pls advice... more

Resolved Question: I'm moving to the U.S. , how can i actually start living there permanently ?

I have a bit of a strange life. My dad works for the German Embassy in Paris right now. I'm a German citizen, but i don't speak German, my first language is English, and i've never lived in Germany. I have been to Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Chile, Florida, now Paris. America was my most favorite place, and i made great friends who i am still in contact with. I attended American schools all my life, so it helped me know more about the country. My dad and I are going to move to LA for 5 years, where he'll be working for the Consulate of Germany. I'm going to be 18, and will attend College. We will be issued A1 Visa. Now here's the thing. I really want to start fresh at a place, make this my new home, since i'll also be going to College, i want to live in the US in future as well. But after 5 years, when my dad leaves, i can't leave, and move back to Germany, because i don't speak German, and an American degree is not enough there, and i won't get a job with it. I heard to get a working Visa you need to be very skilled in engineering or in any medical field. Is this true ?... Cause i am going to Major in Business Management, and i want to work with Companies for Guitars, Shoes or anything music related. How do i get about starting a new life in the US ? please help, i will appreciate any answer. more

Voting Question: What do US citizens think about their own country being one of the worlds largest manufacturer of landmines?

I find myself perplexed at the issue of landmines still being used today. They are indiscriminate killers and remain dangerous decades after being deployed, and long after the wars have ended, still killing people to this day, many of which were not even born when the war was is progress. Each year in Vietnam to this day, as many as 1000 civilians are maimed or killed by US deployed mines or unexploded ordinance. Mines being the most common cause of death or dismemberment. Tragically, this is almost 40 years since the US left Vietnam. More alarming to me, is that the United States is credited as being the largest producer of land mines second only to Russia. http://www.colby.edu/par/Fall 98/LandMines.html From 1969 to 1992 the United States exported nearly four and a half million antipersonnel landmines to at least thirty-four different countries (including Afghanistan, Angola, Vietnam and Iraq). For these landmines America received on average one hundred twenty-five million dollars per year. Over forty-seven American companies manufacture APL, their components or delivery systems. Landmine production contracts in the late 1980s and early 1990s have earned companies upwards of three hundred thirty-six million dollars (Alliant technologies; 1985-95). While currently American corporations are adhering to the American moratorium on landmine production (America's stockpiles are full), the American defense industry is no doubt reluctant to lose such lucrative business relationships with the Pentagon and the foreign countries who also purchase these landmines. In the Television Documentary "The world according to Bush", it was quoted that former President George W. Bush is the largest individual shareholder in the US companies that produce landmines. They being... Raytheon, Honeywell, Rockwell, Texas Instruments and Lockeed-Martin. http://www.icbl.org/index.php 120 Countries sign a treaty to ban land mines - but not the US. The US remains the only western country not to sign the current treaty, and has refused to sign all previous invitations to do so. http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/mines/background-apercu/making-mines-fabrication.aspx?lang=eng The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) says 13 countries have not banned anti-personnel landmine production: Burma, China, Cuba, India, Iran, Nepal, North Korea, South Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, United States and Vietnam. Some of these countries have not actually made AP mines in recent years, but refuse to ban production officially. http://www.icbl.org/index.php/icbl/Library/News-Articles/Universal/us_shameful_lm_policy By refusing to join the Mine Ban Treaty, Obama shows disregard for international humanitarian law Last Tuesday, just before the Thanksgiving holiday, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly revealed that President Obama would follow in President George W. Bush's footsteps and not sign the international Mine Ban Treaty. Many of us had hoped he would embrace President Clinton's pledge that the U.S. would join. The United States produced a policy in 2004, but they are yet to commence following their own policy... http://www.state.gov/t/pm/wra/c11735.htm See also.... http://www.banminesusa.org/ US based campaign to have the US Government ban landmines. I have traveled South East Asia extensively and have met so many people, predominately young people in Vietnam and Cambodia missing arms and legs as a result of US landmines. I was in the South Vietnam town of Vung Tau in 2007 when the discovery was made. As workers were digging the ground for a new fence around a school, a US made anti tank mine was uncovered only 18 inches below the surface of the ground, and directly under a well worn path that children walked on daily. It was a tragedy waiting to happen. I learned also while in Vietnam, that volunteers from Australia, New Zealand, United Kindom and Thailand were working together for over 20 years to remove or detonate the unexploded ordinances and mines left behind by the United States, but it was only in very recent years that the US Government provided funding to do it. I turned to read some books and credible references to learn that the majority of landmines deployed by the US were dropped from aircraft and their locations are unknown, but the other allied countries that deployed land mines during that war, deployed them by hand and map the location of each one, thereby removing all of their mines within 2 years of the end of the Vietnam war. I visited a small town in Southern Vietnam near the Mekong River. Near the middle of the town, surrounded by housing was a piece of land measuring around 8 acres in size. Signs about the heavily grassed area warn to stay out. The block was a former US base. I was told that straying dogs and cows once or twice a year set off the unexploded ordinance left behind by the US. I was also told that to this day, no work has been done by the US to clear the more

Voting Question: Identify & discuss FIVE major macro-environmental factors that are likely to affect the success & growth?

Marketing Question: Identify & discuss FIVE major macro-environmental factors that are likely to affect the success & growth of Hello Kitty? CASE: Hello Kitty: Can Hello Kitty Continue to Rule the World? She’s the cat who appears on everything from diamond jewellery to pencil cases, with her own theme park and even a branded hospital. Recently, a newly opened 30‐bed Hau Sheng Hospital in Yuanlin, Taiwan, which aims to relieve the stress of childbirth for women, was completely decked out in Hello Kitty theme. The four storey hospital is decorated in pink with cartoons of the white cat looming out from every possible surface. Newborn also get everything Hello Kitty, including pink or blue receiving blankets, nurses dressed in pink uniforms with cat‐themed aprons, cot linen and room decors. This is Hello Kitty healthcare. Hello Kitty, a cartoon cat, has appeared on branded merchandise since 1974. But how has the brand’s owner, Sanrio, created a USD$1 billion (SGD1.5 billion) marquee with a personality so appealing that it has been able to cross cultures, product sectors and move into experiences as diverse as theme parks and hospitals? Roberto Lanzi, President of Global Consumer Products (Europe, Middle East and Africa) for Sanrio, admits that the success of Hello Kitty and its many manifestations might look a little odd to anyone not familiar with the business. He explains: ʺOne of the key points of Hello Kitty is its ability to transcend product categories. It is the only brand in the world where you could buy a lollipop or a bottle of red wine. Itʹs also one of the only licensing companies in the world that does more than USD15.7 million (SGD24.5 million) a year in pure diamonds.ʺ For most licensed brands, there is a moment when success turns into over‐exposure. This does not seem to have been an issue for Hello Kitty, however. Starting out 34 years ago as a cartoon cat on a purse, it has appeared on everything from mainstream school notebooks to edgy, pricey Fender Stratocaster guitars. When McDonald’s created Hello Kitty Happy Meals in Tokyo, people queued up outside in a way usually reserved for rock concerts. When McDonald’s offered limited edition Hello Kitty premiums along with its Happy Meals in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, customers mobbed the restaurant’s outlets. Many bought the food and immediately throwing it away, just to get their hands on unique Hello Kitty dolls dressed in traditional Asian costumes. According to Sanrio’s Lanzi, the ingredient tying together every license is that using the cartoon cat should bring a little bit of ʹjoyʹ to any product or service. Tsai Tsung‐chi, director of Hau‐Sheng Hospital with Hello Kitty branding, agrees, saying that the hospital brings a smile to mothers at a very difficult and frightening time. Lanzi adds: ʺHello Kitty was created with the focus of being a small gift, whatever the product. The proposition has always been ʹsmall gift, big smileʹ.ʺ Martin Roll, business and brand strategist at VentureRepublic, and author of Asian Brand Strategy, says that there are many reasons for Hello Kitty’s popularity. ʺUnlike many of the Disney characters and other popular cartoons that emote and develop a distinct personality, Hello Kitty is a rather boring cartoon figure,ʺ he claims. ʺIt does not even have a mouth to talk. Hello Kittyʹs Zen‐like calmness and faceless expression are the main reasons for its appeal across age groups and markets. There are 500 new Hello Kitty products launched around the world each month and 500 lines are discontinued. The idea is, according to Sanrio, to change the range to match different and emerging marketing, business and cultural trends across the world. Apart from the hospital, Sanrio recently signed a licensing deal with mobile handset manufacturer Sony Ericsson, which has launched a range of Hello Kitty branded phones. Lanzi says: ʺMobile phones are a very natural product for the Hello Kitty brand. Children are now using mobiles just as much as teenagers and adults. They are objects that everybody has in their pocket and it is always seen. It is great for exposure.ʺ While Sony Ericsson may advertise its Hello Kitty branded phones, Sanrio relies purely on its partners and word‐of‐mouth. It doesn’t have a ʹnormal licensing strategyʹ, according to Lanzi. ʺThe big difference between the Hello Kitty and our competition is that Sanrio never advertises any aspect of the brand, he claims. We don’t rely on animations, films, TV shows or anything like that. We are probably one of the only brands in the world that relies on our partners, merchandising and word‐of‐mouth to keep us out there.ʺ VentureRepublic’s Roll explains: ʺOne of the important factors that differentiates Hello Kitty in the world of cartoons and characters is that it is not alive with stories, gimmicks and pre‐determined personality before it reaches people.ʺ By being a simple cartoon with very minimal characteristics, the brand actual more

Resolved Question: Question concerning credit card dispute against my business?

Sorry if this is too much info. Just wanted to be sure that I cover everything. During the fall and winter I run an online children's boutique. We specialize in higher end children's items and mostly pettiskirts. I was contacted in January by someone wanting to place a $500 order for skirts going from the states to Singapore. The items were paid for through Paypal and drop shipped to the buyer by the skirt manufacturer. I placed an order, with the manufacturer, for my own children and did so for several other customers as well. All have confirmed that they received their skirts within a week. I am now, more than 5 months later, being contacted by the Singapore buyer who claims she never received hers. Again, more than 5 months later!!! She attempted filing with Paypal but they immediately closed the claim due to it being so long after purchase. However, they did mention that she could file directly with her credit card company and could still be refunded!!! I am so upset. I do not run my boutique through Summer months in order to spend time with my children when they are not in school. Each summer I delete all of my order information, emails, files, etc., so I can get a fresh start the next fall. This has kept things more organized for me up until now. Due to it being so long without hearing from anyone, I no longer have the shipping information. The only thing that I have is the email in which I sent when the order was shipped in January 14th. So now to the question.......Can she really get her money back after this long? In my opinion she should not be able to because there is no reason why she should not have contacted me earlier if she did not receive her order. Infact, I had told her only it would only take a couple of weeks when she first contacted me. I am wondering if she is trying to scam "me" considering the situation and the fact that she is from another country. At this point I no longer have the profit that I made on the skirts to refund her. I am a stay at home mom and with the site being closed through the summer, I have no extra money myself. What can I do? Any information on this or advise would be greatly appreciated!!!Just to follow up with MEG D..... As I mentioned, I no longer have record of anything except for the email in my sent folder confirming to her that the order had shipped. The skirt was drop shipped direct from the manufacturer and they no longer have the information after this long. We are talking 1/2 a year later! They do have the order sheet where it was highlighted when the package was on the shipping table and another sheet that was highlighted once it was on the truck. So it definitely went out. They also print labels direct rather than retyping them or hand writing them so no error with the address. Hopefully you are right about the card company. I honestly do not have the money to loose with this. Thanks so much for your time!! more

Resolved Question: Should I, an Australian Muslim convert, study in Singapore?

Hi! I'm an Australian Muslim woman planning to study in Singapore perhaps next year, because I'm sick of studying at the Australian university I'm currently at. I don't feel welcome where I am, being a Muslimah, and I know that there are a lot of Muslims in Singapore. Also, it's a beautiful country and I have holidayed there many times before. I'm presently studying a primary education degree in a Queensland university in Australia, however it's not very specific as to what I want to teach when I begin my career. I want to teach English as a Second Language, preferably in Madrasahs (Islamic schools). I have found a teaching English as a second language degree at the "Cavalry School of Management & Design" which I am interested in, and it is EXTREMELY specific to the qualifications I need for my TESL career in future. As I am not 18-years-old yet (however, will be in November), I am still dependant on my parents but they are not sure if they would afford paying for me to live in Singapore. So, I know this is meant to be just one question, but I actually have multiple questions that I need to ask: 1) How reputable is the "Cavalry School of Management & Design"? 2) What are some jobs that I could take up in order to cover some of my expenses studying in Singapore... Consider that in regards to experience, I have only had 2 previous jobs (cashier and salad bar attendant), I don't have a degree yet, and I only have an IT and Business certificate. 3) Would there be any Islamic organizations that you know of that could perhaps sponsor me while I am there? 4) Should I go for it!? Please, some advice, suggestions, whatever! :) Peace. more

Resolved Question: Studying Abroad - What should be considered?

I am planning on studying abroad my junior year of college; I am currently a freshman. Assuming I am accepted into the Wisconsin School of Business over the summer, I have the ability to choose from a limited number of countries that have parallel curriculum to ours. The following is the link to my choices:http://www.bus.wisc.edu/international/studyabroad/undergrad.asp . As of now, I am limiting countries based on their universities' reputation. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the National University of Singapore are the only available university's that are ranked in the trivial top 100 rankings. Subsequently, these are my top two choices. I know I would enjoy these cultures but I want to make sure the school is a notable one for my future employers to see. Is this the right approach? Do employer's even care about the university attended? Just curious what you think! Thanks! more

Voting Question: Money aside, what kind of lifestyle do you want?

For me, I would like a luxorious life. I would want a house in a good reputable area, the size just enough for me and my family. I would want a rest house, somewhere near the beach, where I can go there from time to time to relax or invite a few friends to unwind. I would want a good everyday car, something like a 5-series would be good enough, and I want to also have my dream car, a Ferrari, in my garage. I will not be boasting with the Ferrari. I love reading Robb Report, which is a high-end lifestyle magazine, featuring exotic cars, vacations, attractions, jewelry, etc. I am more intrigued with the exotic cars and vacations than the others. I want to splurge my money into vacations, travelling, and trying out new things in different places in the world. I want to first travel to Asian countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore, and try out exotic restaurants, and check out their attractions, like theme parks, malls, etc. Later on, I would want to travel to Europe, and maybe even be able to stay there as long as a month while being able to manage my business from where I am. Again, I want to try different and unique things in Europe, and just travel around the world. And lastly, I want to give back to the community. I want to help those that are needy, and I can be much of assistance to them. I would like to not only help financially, but I want to also spend time and effort being with the less fortunate, giving them words of wisdom and inspiration. I want to leave a legacy in this world, and I find it in giving back to the community. I would want a family that supports me in all I do, and all I want to do. I want to be stress free, and to live a happy life. I want my wife to enjoy what I do, and to be that "extra push" for me to do things that I fear about. I want her to also check on my "blindspot" and give me feedback if I am doing wrong of which I am not aware of. I want my children to also live an exciting life at an early age. I want them to travel and discover the world, even while they are young. I want them to be very sociable at an early age, and be successful in school. I want to live a life surround with friends that support me in all I do. I want to share with my friends my successes. I want to keep a close and deep relationship with those friends that means so much to me, the ones that will be with me through thick and thin. more

Resolved Question: SAT score of 2140. Do i have a shot at ivys? International Student here ):?

SAT score of 2140, where can i go? (are ivys still possible?) Hey guys, i have a score of 2140, 700 on the critical reading, 800 on math and 680 for writing (screwed that up)...So it's a 1500 for math and reading only. My projected grades are 4As for my core content subjects and i take a h3 in biology (AP equivalent). would it help me chances? I have done approximately 400 hours of community service in the last 2 years (including overseas service), am captain of my sports club in school, have volunteered at school events such as orientation and was formerly chairperson of the ROTC equivalent in my secondary school. However, given that i'm an international student from Singapore, what are my chances of getting into places such as cornell? I'm actually aiming for MIT business,Upenn,NYU,cornell,emory,berkeley... and yale... What exactly are my chances and should i retake SATS? Thank you so much! more

Resolved Question: aww thought I'd share this sad story I just found about parents.. *Read it I can't explain it*?

My mom only had one eye. I hated her... she was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students & teachers to support the family There was this one day during elementary school where my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me?! I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "EEEE, your mom only has one eye!" I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. So I confronted her that day and said, " If you're only gonna make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?!!!" My mom did not respond!!! I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I was oblivious to her feelings… I wanted out of that house.. So I studied real hard, got a chance to go to Singapore to study Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren!. When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children!" GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!" And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared out of sight. One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip… After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity!! My neighbors said that she died I did not shed a single tear!!. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have… "My dearest son, I think of you all the time.. I'm sorry that I came to Singapore and scared your children. I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you I'm sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up You see........when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with one eye. So… I gave you mine….. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye …With my love to you… …Your mother… The prophet (sall-Allahu alayhi wassallam) Told us that we must obey Allah and His messenger at all times but after that Comes your mother then your mother then Your mother then your fatherThanks Stallion S. And bookreader 1696: I didn't get it from www.funlok.com but just checking it out now and it's a good site :D so thanks. I can't remember the link I got it from :( more

Resolved Question: TRUE Pro Wrestling Fan Quiz?

This is still Stemming from Earlier Questions today about Why the WS has become Lame , Newbies , & Kiddies. I asked a Question asking people to name a Fact only a TRUE Fan would know (Thank you to those of you who answered) but I didn't get an answer to some of my Example Questions. So , I figured i'd make it into a Quiz: 1 - Who is the FIRST TRUE Professional Wrestling Heavyweight Champion? (This was 100+ years ago) 2 - Who was the First Recognized NWA Champion? (60+ Years ago) 3 - How/Why did the Tommy Dreamer/Sandman "Singapore Caning" Match come to be? 4 - Who is Lou Thesz , & Why is he important? 5 - What did Gorgeous George Contribute to the "Professional Wrestling" Business that we have Today? 6 - Who was the First AWA Champion? (48 Years ago) 7 - True/False - Professional Wrestling Preceded Collegiate & High School Wrestling. 8 - Why are Buddy Rogers & Bruno Sammartino important in the History of WWE? 9 - What is the Scale that a Bloody Match is rated on Known as , And where/how did it gets the name? 10 - Name the Six(6) Most Prominent Wrestling Promotions in the United States in History up to Today.*EDIT* - Ha , You're Funny. These are Easy. I know the Answers to these right of the top of my Head.*EDIT* - 3 People are REALLY Close. only 1 wrong answer for each of the 3. #10 seems to be a bit troubling. Read the last part of #10 - "Up toToday".*EDIT* - #10 - all I will say is - Give that "Other" promotion it's Due for being prominent. 5/6 seems to be easy , but that 6th Promotion seems to be giving some problems. more

I am currently attending Fordham University (CBA) studying International Business - Business Economics. I have set my schedule up so that I can leave the United States by the end of summer; however, I will need to take an extra 2-3 classes to graduate. The "top tier" part of my question can be left out as it does not matter how prestigious the school I take my last 2-3 classes at is; I would simply like to attend a good school for my education. more

Resolved Question: Our 8-year high school reunion is coming up. Should I show off to the girls that dissed me?

It's been 8 years since our senior year in high school. We're about to have a reunion in a couple weeks. I was somewhat nerdy and skinny in high school, and used to try to talk to a couple of the "pretty" girls and they'd lift their noses at me like I was worthless. Pretty mean girls. About 5 of the girls I remember that were rude and stuck-up to me are going to be there. I checked their MySpace pages, and 3 of them are overweight. 4 out of 5 of them work shitty jobs... one changes dirty diapers at a day care center, another bags groceries at the supermarket, one is a waitress, another one is a golddigger that jumps from guy to guy and doesn't work. The one with a decent job is some kinda of data technician at a hospital. I graduated from Standford and now hold a good position with a Singapore-based investment firm, and make over $150,000 a year, and plan on adding about $30,000 more to that income with this online business I just started. I live in a wealthy neighborhood as well. I also am no longer skinny as I have worked out ever since I got out of high school, and have a cut physique like a swimmer, and I date a girl that models for Ed Hardy. I drive a 2008 E350 Mercedes as well. My question is, should I go in there and go out of my way to flaunt to these stuck-up girls what's going on in my life, since they dissed me and humiliated me in high school? If so, how should I go about doing it? Any recommendations? I plan on bringing in my girlfriend for them to see as well, who looks about 1,000x better than any of them. Shallow, I know. But, the reunion is only for one day; think about how these girls dissed me month after month in high school. Would you rub this in these women's faces? I'm cynically looking forward to it...ProfessorC... the gold-digging chick with no job as peace of mind? I never even thought of any of these girls until I was told about the reunion... then I decided to thumb through the thumb buck. Trust me, for the past 8 years I have not been thinking of them day in, day out. You defend them and say "this is what teens do"... really? I didn't do that, and neither did any of my friends. Mean people are mean people. Don't excuse them just because they're female and I'm male.*decided to thumb through the YEAR BOOK more
