Business leaders slow to adopt Web 2.0
Another 22.4% are "interested in these tools but we haven't figured out how to apply them to our business." Twenty percent haven't yet seen the need for Web 2.0 at their companies, and 11.9% said they're unfamiliar with the tools. "That's a relatively even distribution among those familiar with Web 2.0 tools. But it is interesting that less than 50% of businesses are using them now, despite all the rhetoric about these services. The other 22.4% who are interested would expand current usage by half again. These are relatively cheap media forms. Why hasn't business adopted them more fully? It would appear that marketers of Web 2.0 platforms and services haven't done as good a job as they might of explaining what they have to offer. EpiCept said it has to perform two post-approval clinical studies as part of the marketing authorization granted under Exceptional Circumstances.
Of the two clinical studies, one would study the clinical pharmacology of the drug by assessing certain biomarkers in AML patients in first remission. The second will evaluate the effect of Ceplene/IL-2 on the development of minimal residual disease in the same patient population.
Jack Talley, president and chief executive officer of EpiCept, said, "We are evaluating all of our strategic options for the marketing of Ceplene, and will continue to work towards realizing the drug's potential to fulfill an important unmet medical need for AML patients in Europe."

Open Question: Would you take a sales job knowing you'll probably be fired?
Would you take an outside ad sales job and ride the wave for a few months until you get let go for not meeting your quota? I am currently unemployed due to a layoff about a year ago. I am now in school full time. I had an advertising sales job a few years ago and happen to know that ad sales is just a revolving door because you can't really sell advertising through cold calling. Businesses need to see how well marketed your publication / station is doing and come to you. I have been offered a job in ad sales and know that in this market there is no way in HELL I am going to meet that quota, but they do offer a base salary. I am thinking about just taking it, not breaking my neck over it and just riding the wave. Outside sales offers a lot of freedom, just driving around all day, pretending to work.Any thoughts? Ok so here is the story... I am 25, female finishing up my BA in General Studies (Liberal Arts) focused in Sociology & General Business. I just got engaged to my wonderful bf. no doubts in my mind about that at all. Here is where the problem starts. I hate my job. It is stable, but I feel like if I stay there any longer I will drive my self crazy. The economy sucks & so I can't find another job. I live with my parents now, but I was looking to buy condo with my fiance. Being that I hate my current job I was thinking about going to radiography school for 2 years and then go an extra year to focus in radiation therapy to help treat cancer patients. The problem is is that for 3 years I will have no income. I feel like this is an unfair pressure to put on my relationship. We are looking to get married (small wedding) next May. What kind of wife would I be not bringing nothing to the table? He is supportive, but I am the one that handles the money, so I really do not think he has a correct concept of how we probably will not be able to afford much. I guess my question is is WHAT DO I DO??? should I do something that in time will lead to a good (salary wise & emotionally rewarding), or should I stick it out bc I am kind of old to change things already? Anyony that is in radiology, radiation or even the health care field - your outlook on the schooling and the job is very much appreciated. I was a teacher for 23 years until corrupt bureaucrats hung me up to dry after I was assaulted by a student and came away with a torn up back and PTS. Instead of helping me they tried to twist everything around and put me at the cause. The AFT steeped in it went to court my supervisors lied on the bible and I came away with over a year of salary signed a letter that I would never work for the district after 20 years and found out after several interviews that I was blackballed from ever teaching again. From 1998 to 2007 all I could do was sub, draw out all my retirement money to live on and worked for CompUSA from 10/03 to 06/07 as lead macintosh sales person and repair. Then in 10/07 I found a teaching job at a private school teaching science. I made a major and costly move to Conroe TX and 3 weeks into the job they laid me off due low student numbers. Since then I have been out of work the blackballing even reached 60 miles from Houston and all I could do is sub and struggle to pay my bills. Besides being a teacher I am highly proficient with the Macintosh computer. I was a member of the Houston Area Apple User Group for over 20 years were I did seminars on macgames utilities and how to care for your Mac. Around 2002 I tried my own Mac business but then Enron happened and I quickly went from a 40000 a year job to less than 10000 in 5 months and had to re-enter the work force. I nearly went bankrupt. Then I found CompUSA in 2003-2007 and the damn teaching job in 2007. Now I am looking for work in the Mac industry. If anyone wants a resume you can contact me at maclewconsultant@aol.com and I will email you a copy. After I graduated high school I was immediately employed by my father. I worked for him for about four years and made a substantial income. But for some reason I still felt empty and far from being satisfied with my life. I was working and living in the real world while all my friends were attending college enjoying their youth. After the recession hit my father's business, I made the choice to go back to school. It's been a rough adventure after losing more than half of my annual salary. But it's actually given me intrinsic warmth, a sense of freedom, and youthfulness. I'm doing quite well in school and I have about two more years left until I obtain my bachelor's degree in accounting. I do not want to go back to the "real world". I want to travel, party, see the world, and learn first hand about other cultures while I'm still young. Is this wrong? I'll be 26 by the time I graduate. I feel like I should settle down and start making a "real life" for myself. I just don't want to go back to that grim life so soon. I learned real quick about what it was like to be Americanized at a young age. Why do I have this urge to stay young and free? moreVoting Question: Penn State or Rutgers Business School Better?
I'm in state and is it easier to apply in ur junior year? Which school will get you the highest paying salary when i graduate? moreVoting Question: I am somewhat self conscious about my weight and the amount of money I make, should I be?
I am 6'3" I weight 202-204lbs. I work in the medical field and make, combined with investment and salary, $60,000. I am a single guy and one of my academic field of study was business economics, so I know how to spend money and I know about investment (I estimate that the value of what I spend my money on is double of what I spend, so I get about $120,000 worth of goods and services/year). I feel uneeducatedted, sort of, but I have 132 total credits, so I am educated average. My GPA was in the 3.50-4.00, closer to 4, but I feel dumb, too? IDK. I guess I feel dumb and poor. Again, I am single and make $60,000, where does that live me? I have 2 associated degrees: business, and medical office as well as a minor in economics. Part of me is debating about becoming an economist, but that's 2 more years of school. Another issue I have not become confindent on. But, I feel fine and probably will just stay as I am, a medical office assistant. It's been 4 weeks....haha. I think I like you're thinking. I got laid about 5 times from Jan 18-Feb 18, and then it just hasn't happened since.I don't defy economics. If I spend $5.00 on something that I value as $10.00, I double my income. It's a concept called consumer surplus. As far as my income, I make $35,000 from my job and $25,000 from investments. I won a law suite because of a mistake during my birth, I have CP. I have a very IQ though, so don't get the wrong idea. I have about $200,000 which I hope to get a 7% return avg in my lifetime over 40 years....that itself is 3.2 million, and I kind of count that as income. The money I make as a medical office assistant will be totaly expenditure, no saving at all. I will shop and find amazing deals. I do it all the time. I walk out the door with $5.00 go to sal val and get 3 shirts worth 18 dollars a piece...I make 54-5=49. And, that's just one day. I mastered micro economics. macro is a little more tricky. high IQ, did I say? moreVoting Question: Please help ! I'm really confused about my future...?
Hello, I'm currently a freshman in high school and I've been thinking a lot of what I'm going to do/ be in the future. We're currently picking electives for sophomore year and I'm really confused about my future aspirations. My Interests - I've actually been interested in the health care field. What I was planning to do through out high school was stock up on science classes/math classes, take an academy class relating to the medical field, etc. But recently I'm not sure about going into the health care field (pediatrics or neurology interest me the most). The thing I am really worried about is the amount of debt you’re going to get to after med school (for pediatricians the average is about $95,000) Actually starting to work seems just so far away. :/ I’m also interested in computers/technology/ and business somewhat. I’m actually really good with computers. I was able to make a webpage (though a bit average) by seventh grade. Business is okay in my book. I still need to explore through that. Oh yes, and about electives. I need advice on how I want to order it around. So far, I’ve chosen Programming (but we’re allowed to change). I wanted to take Orchestra for the last three years of High School but I feel like I NEED a computer class to get me through the year. (We only get 2 electives and Spanish is already taking one) I’m currently taking private lessons, but I don’t want to just have lessons for only 30 minutes, once a week. I was thinking about joining a Youth Orchestra, but my parents aren’t willing to drive me and/or pay for me. They said to just take the course at school =-=. I’m definitely taking it Junior Year though since there’s an extra elective slot. I really want to join an orchestra sophomore year though. In the future, I want to live a very good life, with a nice family, and a great salary (what everyone basically wants). I just can’t seem to pick one interest to stick to. How can I narrow it down to just one? Please help me, I’m really confused And thanks to all who endured through my long post! moreVoting Question: How can I pay for Stanford?
Hi there! I have a question concerning how I might be able to afford the college of my dreams -- Stanford. As it stands, I am a junior in a relatively high-achieving public high school in the southern United States who is from a fairly well-to-do family who, because of the economy another sibling who will be going to college one year before me, will not be able to cover the costs of the school without some form of financial aid and/or scholarships. Here is a little about myself (forgive the self-salesmanship -- I'm practicing for college!): -I am interested in going into the medical field, particularly in the area of neurology. -Currently, my GPA is a 4.0 with three AP classes and two pre-AP classes). -My highest score is 2210 on the SAT (760 Reading, 700 Math, 750 Writing + 10 on the essay). -I am currently doing biomedical research at a research center alongside graduates and post-docs. -I am also currently taking part in a hospital education group at a nearby hospital that shows the inner workings of the facility and teaches procedure. -I volunteer with community organizations such as Meals on Wheels and another one that helps women get out of the prostitution business. -I am in National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Green Club, marching band, tennis, academic decathlon, and Mensa. While I am truly hoping that the above makes me entry-level Stanford material, I have rather large doubts that the above would qualify me for anything close to a full ride. Strictly speaking, the unmitigated cost of four years at Stanford undergraduate school is around $210,000 at about $52,000 a year. Moreover, this price goes up a few thousand dollars every year. As I said earlier, without something to pay, at least partially, for college, I will not be able to attend Stanford. Furthermore, I don't think that my family qualifies for financial aid because we are approximately in the top two or three percent in terms of salary in America. While that may seem like a lot (and for normal purposes, it is), it does not come close to what we would need to pay for my college education, let alone that of my brother's who is going at the same time I am. This is compounded by the bad economy, which has significantly reduced the amount of money we are making annually. So I am feeling a little up a creek here, my dear reader. My dream college seems to sit just a few months away from me, but I fear that, even if I did get accepted there, I would not be able to afford it. If you have any experience or advice in this area or have been through a similar dilemma yourself, please do take a few minutes to share it with me. I went to a major university for 3.5 years as a business major. Long story short, I had family problems and had to leave. I am now working in an office. I sit at a desk and am on a computer all day processing orders. I make $36K in the Washington DC area which isn't much for the area. I am 24 and am trying to go back to school full time in August of this year. I am thinking of becoming a teacher because this office work is just not cutting it for me. It is incredibly boring, my mind is not in any way stimulated, and don't get me started on the politics. I want to know, what is it like being a teacher? Is it that bad of a job? Everyone knows that teachers do not pay well, but I do not want to be rich or wealthy, happiness is more important and as long as I can make a decent living to live comfortably, that is all I need. I have herd that teachers starting salaries are around 40K in this area, which would be OK for me. I am by myself and I am renting a room at 36K and I think with a little more I could afford an apartment. I would also appreciate any information in regards to becoming a teacher. I am not really interested in elementary school although I may consider it. I am more interested in secondary education. (High School or Middle School). I have an offer for a full time managerial position, with twice as much of a salary. However, Im the only one running the whole place w/o any help. The owner's wife is there everyday to 'help out' for a few hrs everyday. She does not know much about the business, Ive had experience for 9 yrs. I got a good feeling about it first, but soon I started to sense a little strangeness. She seems to be a little intimidated by me as she looked me up and down. I even tried being extra nice but I get a funny feeling about her. I told her that before I officially start I would come in on my time and observe the flow of the office for a few days and get caught up. I told her I would come in today in the afternoon for a couple of hours and while I was driving there she called me and said she was concerned because she thought I was supposed to be there at 1pm while I never told her a time. She may make things even more stressful for me as Ive experienced before. Why is no one staying there ? The previous manager has been gone since October, and they gave all the work load to another employee who isn't very experienced. The office is highly disorganized. Why have they just starting to look for someone now when the last person they had is leaving too. The workload is for three people that Im being given. They said they cant afford to hire anybody else. I wont be able to take any time off because there is no one to cover for me. I also wont be able to keep up with school. The previous employee whos leaving said she had to come in while she had the swine flu because there was no one else to cover her. I was exited about the opportunity before and could use the extra cash, but am a little hesitant to accept because of the stress load. I know times are hard but in my field not many people can back up their experience. Another offer is for a lower position and less amount. Not sure what to do as a decision needs to be made soon. Any advice ? Thank you.All answers are so helpful and more than I can ask for. Thank you soo much everyone !!! I turned out that she turned me down, which Im happy about... because if I had the choice and I refused it then I would be beating myself up for not taking the offer when I had it as I really need it right now. My grades are as follows HS GPA: 99.58% SAT Scores: Verbal: 660 Math: 750 First Semester GPA: 3.75 (A's in Honors Business and Math 3010, Cal 2) Do you think there's a high chance of getting into stern in two years if i keep up my GPA and have internships and such? Or, do you think it's better not going to Stern? (I'm not sure if top finance companies would like to give a good starting salary to Macaulay at Baruch graduates) (and another question. is there any chance to get into Law graduate school at Columbia after graduating from macaulay at cuny? I would like to get a degree in financial law. Plus, MBA at stern if possible.) Thanks! moreResolved Question: How do I deal with my need to be important?
I plan on going to nursing school next year. The decision was made because I have a BA in something that got me nowhere in life (journalism) and I really want a good paying job (as opposed to the minimum wage salary I am making). But I hate that I am going into nursing. While it is an interesting career, I find I have this need to be important. I originally choose journalism as my major b/c I’m a good writer and top journalists are looked at as being very important. Nursing is a good career but to me, I don’t see it as an utterly important career and by that I mean they are just the physician‘s tool and they are not big shots like business execs, lawyers, doctors, and cops. Those are the types of careers I’d like to see myself doing but really my personality is more appropriate for nursing--shy, quiet, and unassertive but nurturing. It really is a good career for my personality and especially in this economy (it’s considered a recession proof job). So how can I get myself over this need to be important?Note: I mean no disrespect to anyone who is a nurse. I work in a hospital so I know that they play a vital role in the care of patients but it is my own hang up.Francois Le Clerc: That's one of the reasons I know I have this need to be a important. I cared about journalism not because of what it all stood for but for the prestige you get when you reached the top. moreVoting Question: what am I ? Liberal, conservative, or what?
I am against war and nation building. I am for limited government and for paying our foreign dept. I am for 100% against government interference in our health care system. You are poor stupid and sick = you die. natural selection I am for subsidized first 2 years of college for every high school graduate. Every highscool teacher needs to be fired if 5 consecutive generations under his belt had a lower than 40% colege admission. At 40 I am making a caeer change but it is so hard to decide I have taken numerous career tests and they all come back to what I have done and burned out. my likes are travel, working by myself, My start time my dislikes are manual labor, being tied to the same spot all day everyday I am a restless person, I am likeable person.Office politics get on my nerves and the people are so fake. i can't do it anymore. In the manual labor field, people have no amition and try to one up everybody else and expect you to believe they slept with 10 girls the night before and smoked a pile of weed 3 feet high. You raise your hand to go to the restroom like a child. A buzzer rings when you stop and start work like robots. my history of employment includes- Air traffic controller (US Navy) after i got out I worked foundries and steel mills went to school for drafting all of these I did not like. Went back to school again for Computer science/technician did this for years working my way up the ranks doing field service repair to small to medium sized business networks. I moved on to Network Administrator to director of MIS. Career was going great I was the boss controlled 4 locations then September 11th happened the company I was at went out of business in the wake of this. A felony record of mine from years before for an assault popped only had probation never jail. This conviction never bothered me in the past, I had changed my ways and went to college in the mean time. Searching for employment I was turned down many times with my salary was to high I would never be happy at what they could give me, or the worst one my assault conviction. Seems I am blacklisted from working for anybody. So I decided to go get my CDL until things could change and I could support my family. I wrecked my semi and decided that wasnt the best career goal for me, so I decided to go back to information technology. no one was raising their hand to hire me so I started contracting and after about a year of this I found a good steady contract. I loved it!!! I did Field Service repair in Hospitals. The only downfall it was 24/7 work but I didnt mind I was paid extremely well. I got to travel some to take care of other territories for other workers. I did this job for a few years until the recession hit and my contract was cut. I went back to school again, this time for motorcycle repair. Year long school figured I could do it until the economy picked up. I didnt really like the motorcycle work and decided i would go back to IT again after graduation with an added skill of motorcycle repair so I could work on my own bike and maybe a few others for extra money. The day i graduated I had a heart attack, it was diagnosed as stress related so now I have to find something not hard work low stress and getting to travel some (field service fly somewhere fix a project fly home) preferrably a home office set my own schedule type of work. moreResolved Question: I am slightly brain damaged and my soul feels like it has missed out on so much in life...?
I want to experience so much more out of life than what I have up to now, but am unable to. I have passion for so many things but have given up due to my limited brain potential - such as music, teaching, etc.. On a good day I can really be outgoing, friendly, hard working, caring, and some what of an intellectual. Other days I am brain dead and just want to sleep the whole day - seeming so introverted and geeky as well as lazy. I have built my whole life around having a bad day, so as not too get fired, etc. The theory of master of none...sort of applies to me- but in a much greater way....as keeping an average 8 till 5 job takes everything out of me. I have focused all my power on getting a good education and getting a good job. With my brain power - I have to give all of my power to my work - just to keep my job, and soon as I get home I can fall asleep at 17:00 until 8:00am. Attending to any of my hobbies leaves me so tired I can hardly work. This includes playing musical instruments, reading, socializing etc. I make such a full of myself when I try and speak - sort of like a geek on a first date, but this is how I am with everyone. I crave for a meaningful conversation with any one but my brain just fumbles. I have worked so hard to not be a supermarket packer, but what have I got to show for it. My salary is good, but I am so afraid to be fired, and likewise perhaps I deserve to be - my work is really poor. If I went more into the client side of business, focusing less on brain power I wold still struggle because my speach is so poor. I have worked hard not to be a bum and yet on a good salary and a monstrous effort to cheat the employement system, I crave to be fired and sent to a sanitarium for guidance. I feel so alone, i am the office geek that always seems moody and into himself, my social skills are really bad, as I misinterpret everything. Women talk to me as if I am one of those sort of geeky guys with no experience, guys think i am really bland. I am so lonely, so jeolus of the intellectual types - and just wish my personality was as bad to match my brain power. My brain seems to just go blank every 30 seconds. I was sent to a special private school for kids with severe disablities. In great 7, I jst wanted to be in a normal school and my parents sent me to a normal public high school. I was very popular and made so many friends - but as the years have passed and the work gets harder, I have recluded into a geek. In short I feel like a real extrovert that can't get out of my shell and has just stagnated. What should I do?In short I would say that I am a mentally challenged person, with the social perspective of any normal person. Society treats me as a metally challenged person, I engage with society as a mentally challened person, bt inside I am so alone and craving the interaction and love of a normal person. moreResolved Question: 21 years old, frustrated with Mom's midlife crisis?
I am 21, graduating from business school with a degree in supply chain management. I'm graduating early this December and I'm getting job offers lined up with some amazing salaries. I'm pretty much set to move out of my parents house in the next year or two and buy my own house. My Mom is turning 50 and I'm beginning to wonder if she is going through a mid-life crisis of some sorts. She has went through a lot of emotional trauma... my younger brother almost died in the hospital a year ago. It did take a huge toll on her. My older brother married a horrible woman and that did put some stress on her too. For the past few months, she has been acting pretty weird and I'm wondering if it is just a mid-life crisis phase. She is always reading $3 romance novels and she is often complaining about her marriage to my dad. I worry she is getting the "Edward Cullen" syndrome where she starts setting unrealistic expectations of my dad when she compares him to romantic male figures in novels. She is always talking about other guys "checking her out" and I am completely disgusted by it. And then she has these infatuations with celebrities like Brad Paisley. It disturbs me. When she gets mad at my dad over stupid little things she vents to me about past boyfriends and how maybe things would have turned out differently if she married one of them. I have learned to let her be though because she will get pretty upset if I reveal how I feel about her behavior. There is no way I can comment without it implying she is TOO OLD to act like this, and those are taboo words. Also, her degree is not much good so she often muses about other professions she should have gone into when she was younger. She sometimes complains about how she wished she went into law or medicine. I'm stuck living with my parents at the moment; I wish I could move out and let them work out their problems without me being a part of it. I am worried about her and I don't want her to go crazy as she keeps thinking about "how her life could have been" rather than accepting her life as it is now. In my eyes, her life is not that bad. Sure she works hard to keep things together and she stresses over finances and typical family problems. But I am worried about her behavior and whether or not it will be permanent. Is this just a mid-life crisis phase that will go away eventually or will she continue going down this maddening road that will lead her to complete frustration and insanity driven by regret? And if she does continue going down this road, how should I approach this emotionally? I don't want to see my own mother be miserable and frustrated until she dies. I can't stand to carry that burden. Is this normal what she is going through?I probably should add... She was sexually molested and abused by her brothers growing up. My grandparents got mad at her when she "slandered" her brothers. They also got mad when she announced she was going to college. They tried everything in their power stop her from getting educated because they did not want her to be more successful than her parents. Essentially, my inner family is the only family she has. My grandparents and relatives on both sides of my family are jerks. moreResolved Question: 21, frustrated with my Mom's mid-life crisis?

I am currently in high school and as college is quickly approaching, I am considering all majors to go into. I am a bright student and let me tell you briefly about my academics: 4.7 GPA (about) "Gifted Program" (GIEP) 250+ Community service hours per year (Trying for 300+) Advanced placement courses. In the top one percent of my grade. Personality, hobbies: Tennis player, USTA 3.5 rating, hope to be 4.0 when I graduate. Like to help people. Nothing in the medicine field, I hate blood and the human body, etc. Best in my math class, took 11th grade math courses in 9th grade. Outstanding leadership skills, etc. My gifted teacher thinks I should major in Public Policy at Cornell and then get an MBA at Wharton Acadamy (School) of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and go into Corporate Real Estate Development. I'm not sure if that's what I'm into though. I'm really artsy but I don't want to be an artist (I'm not that good), like arcitecture, job MUST require traveling to different cities, etc, salary about $100k starting, nearing $150k-$200k at peak. I do not know about maybe some type of international relations manager? I also like politics, not really law but I'm really good on the mock trial team and on the HS Speech League (forensics). So does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks, and If you have any ?s, I'll try to post additional details for you all. In Rhode Island the it looks like the school district will be firing all 88 high school teachers - the first comment I heard was "some of us grew up in this community and taught here for several years..." Is this an excuse to perpetuate their own ignorance? Evidently it is not working. It's taken me awhile to catch on to the union teacher benefits - around here they can take classes at he Master's level, all paid for - a teacher friend of mine is using this benefit to re-educate herself and leave teaching! The union used to be a necessary entity, yet between them and our federal gov't - we have entirely lost control over our kids educations. I think this is a good first step in dismantling this pork barrel spending, demand responsibility, and stop our tax dollars from ending up in Washington union pockets via dues. Even our sports booster club cupcake profits are going to union salaries in our school district - dirty little secrets that need to be exposed so that we can get on with the business of education. I feel very badly for those teachers who are doing their best, going above & beyond - they deserve more pay while others deserve less, yet the union prevents this also. What have you heard - what do you think?i agree with all. Please note that i went after the union as a whole. Good teachers who deserve good pay are also getting shafted and leaving. I taught overseas- no unions . No budget with better results. Anyone see decline in u.s. education around time unions and lawyers gained power?i agree with all. I'll be visiting the UK in May, and am applying for a UK tourist visa. The thing is, I am currently on my last semester of my bachelors degree, studying full-time, and not working. I am a community college student with a 3.0 GPA which I intend on improving. I want to transfer to May's business school (A&M) or McCombs business school (UT) UT requires Calculus I, and II to get in. My worst subject is math and Im afraid if I take these classes it will hurt my GPA and and my chances of getting into either school. A&M does not requrie Calculus I, and II I want to know what is the major difference if I get my degree at UT or A&M?? JANESVILLE, Wis. – In the early dawn, after another week building cars, Michael Hanley leaves his job in Kansas. He quickly zips into Missouri, then heads up a ribbon of highway past grain silos and grazing deer, across the frozen fields of Iowa, over the Mississippi River and into the rolling hills of Wisconsin. Finally, he pulls into his driveway — 530 miles later. It's one heck of a haul: more than 1,000 miles roundtrip, 16-plus hours of driving, every week. "I like to say I gave up an eight-minute commute for an eight-hour commute," he says wearily, running a hand though salt-and-pepper hair as he watches his two sons play basketball for the first time this season. After the aging General Motors plant where he worked for 23 years was idled about a year ago, Hanley faced a Hobson's choice: Stay with his family and search for an autoworker's salary ($28 an hour) in a county where more than 40 percent of its manufacturing jobs disappeared from 2006 to 2009. Or hang on to his GM paycheck and health insurance and follow the job, no matter where it leads. In his case, it led to Fairfax, Kan., the same place his brother and two brothers-in-law — also GM workers, and now his roommates — landed. For others, it has been Indiana or Texas. The long commute is not just a story of hard times, tough choices and a shrinking American auto industry. It's also a case study of what happens when an aging industrial town loses an anchor, when workers too old to start over and too young to retire are caught in a squeeze and when economic survival means one family, but two far-flung ZIP codes. ___ Hanley is not one to complain. "GM has been good for us," he says. "This whole town knows that." For 90 years, the sprawling plant — it started out building tractors — became a different kind of family business. Through the decades, sons followed fathers onto the line, sometimes rubbing shoulders as they built Chevy Cavaliers, Caprices, Tahoes, Suburbans and more. Hanley's father and brother worked there. So did his father-in-law, two brothers-in-law and an assortment of uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. But as GM's financial troubles mounted, car and SUV sales fell and gas prices climbed, the automaker closed several plants, eliminating thousands of jobs. Janesville — then the oldest of GM assembly plants — ended production of SUVs in December 2008, months before the automaker received billions of dollars in government loans and filed for bankruptcy. (The factory is on standby status; some hold out hope it will reopen one day.) Some of about 1,200 remaining workers took buyouts or retired; some began new careers. Hundreds more stayed with GM, relocating, commuting or just waiting for an opening. The automaker has about 6,500 laid-off workers nationwide. Even before the doors closed, Hanley began preparing for life after GM. He returned to college to complete two credits he needed for an accounting degree, but an offer in Kansas came first. He didn't hesitate. Auto work these days is like playing musical chairs. You grab an opening where you can. Hanley didn't want to lose his health insurance while his wife, Laura, was receiving costly chemotherapy treatments for a blood disease that will likely lead to cancer. The medical bills last year, she says, were in the tens of thousands of dollars. "There's no way I could possibly go through one treatment without him having insurance," she says. Like many other divided GM families, the Hanleys decided even though the job was important, there were reasons not to uproot everyone: Laura works at their sons' Catholic school, the boys are immersed in band, Scouts, basketball and church, and the sale of a house was an iffy and perhaps money-losing proposition. Hanley knew it would be a trade-off — financial security for a lonely existence. His eyes mist as he talks about what he misses: dinner with his family, coaching basketball, going to the YMCA with his boys, wrestling with them at night, attending their concerts and games, watching them grow up. "It's an adjustment, not being home," he says. "I probably sounded cruel because I said I wouldn't miss my wife as much because she's going to be there when I come back, when I retire. But those years with the kids aren't going to be there. That's the hard part, not being able to be around them. ... I don't know if I really appreciated it before." Hanley plans to commute another 18 months, until he turns 50, hoping for a retirement package then — something, he says, he "prays about every night." Laura, meanwhile, does double duty as a single parent. It's all overwhelming — working, shuttling her sons around, keeping an eye on her elderly mother and worrying about her husband's long commutes. "The kids are tired of seeing mom cry because she's stressed and seeing dad cry when he needs to go back to work," she says. "We're really close — the four of us. I am going to college next year. And I have been taking pretty much all Science classes. But I still took classes like Accounting I and AP Microecon and Macroecon. I am an All A student and I pretty much excel at any subject I take. But the problem is that I was never really interested in subjects like Biology and Chemistry. I love Math and Physics though, but my favorite course has definitely been Econ. I am going to Wayne State on a scholarship next year, but I am worried if going into Pharmacy is going to be the wrong choice. I mean... come on.. pharmacy is way too easy and I don't want to be regretting this choice like 15 years from now. it seems so dull: you wake up, tell people how to take the pills, and make your six-figure salary. But business is something I have a keen interest in. My parents say it has no future, but I plan to transfer into U of M next year and head towards Ross Business school (which pretty much needs no intro). What do you guys think? Im a sophmore in high school living in Iowa. I plan to stay in iowa and have a family here. I dont really no what I want to do after college, and have no idea what courses to take in college. I have a huge intrest in vehicles, and depending on the salary would love to sell vehicles for a living. I wouldn't mind fixing or restoring vehicles either. Im redneck minded, and would hate sitting in a cubicle all day talking on a phone, and staring at a computer screen. Wouldn't mind that for a couple hours, but would absoloutley hate to do that for a whole business day. Don't mind to wake up early, but would hate to work late. Not a social butterfly, but wouldn't mind talking to people face to face as part of my job. I really like the country atmosphere, but wouldn't like "arthritis in 20 years" hard labor type of job like working on a farm. Dont mind jobs that require some hard labor though like landscaping, but I here they do not make much. Money is very important to me, but only to some extent. Wouldn't pick a cubicle job that i dont like that pays 75,000, over a job that I like that pays 65,000 a year. Air Force was an option until a couple of months ago, when I heard you really don't have a choice of where you go and stay. Planning on going to the University of Northern Iowa, don't no what im doing though. I could take a year long welding class next year...would it be worth it...I here some welders make pretty good money. Another class that I can take is a class that teaches you everything you need to know to build a house, then you actually do build a house. I was thinking that would be a good class, just to take for life purposes, not job purposes, but I do have options to take other classes so I dont know if im taking that one. moreResolved Question: Would you go to Grad school for Accounting or just pass the CPA license and move to a Non-150 state?
I am currently a sophomore going for a Bachelors degree in Accounting. I want to be a CPA and serve individuals and small businesses in the future. I am highly interested in Taxation. I currently worth with a non-profit organization filing tax returns for low-income indviduals. I currently reside in a state where I am able to take the CPA exam but need 1 more year of accounting grad school to get a CPA license. I have done much research and I have noticed that salary does not have much significance in regards to Grad school vs just a bachelors degree when you are a CPA. I am planning on passing the CPA exam as soon as i graduate with a bachelors, move to a non-150 hour state such California, Colorado, etc and just meet the public accounting experience. I feel like I want to just get the License and start getting real world experience. Someday I want to open my own business but I plan to start ASAP. On my spare time, I keep up with IRS laws and read business books. What do you think? moreResolved Question: RU NB Newark or Penn State Business Major?
Which school is better for majoring in business? What's the average salary from students getting a job at each school? moreResolved Question: What is the salary of a cake maker/decorator?
I've been having a hard time trying to pick a career to go into after high school and I was just thinking about professional cake making/decorating. I think it would be cool to be one of those fancy cake decorators like on Ace of Cakes or Cake boss. I'm having a hard time finding information. Is anyone out there a cake decorator and willing to give me some info? I'd like to know roughly how much money you can make per year either working for a business or by creating your own business. I'd also like to know what kind of education is best to get for this career. I live in Manitoba, Canada by the way and I do have quite a bit of creative skill.Does anyone know how much money each cake could potentially sell for and how many cakes might be ordered per month? moreResolved Question: unhappy wife - need an equal partner, not a roommate or child LAZY HUBBY?
i am at the end of my rope. i am considering separation. i am sure i would have done this long ago if not for our two kids, aged 5 and 9. i am typically a positive person and feel i have a lot to offer. but, i have about had it w/ my husband. he has been home w/ our kids for about 8 years. the agreement was that he would return to work when our daughter got to first grade, which is this coming fall. now he is balking at going back as agreed. we need him to work and get some benefits, since mine are soo expensive due to being self employed. i really don't care what he does, as long as he gets a regular job. i work full time, own my own business and bring home a nice salary. it is enough to pay for a nice house. he has access to cash and credit cards as he wishes and does not go crazy using them. hubby is supposed to keep the house (fairly) clean, laundry and watch kids when they are not in school. basically, he does the bare minimum in all aspects. the house is perpetually a disaster except that maybe the kitchen stays kind of clean. he barely attends to the kids, and in my opinion wastes valuable time on himself that he could be spending w/ kids when they are young and want to be w/ their parents. he's just lazy. there are times when i work from home and he just does not do much at all. if he works for 2 hours, he feels that is enough and goes to watch tv or sleep. this is not once in a while, this is on and on, for years now. he does go through "spurts" when he is busy, but mostly i feel so taken advantage of that i work hard, support us financially and take the lead on parenting. I suspect the "resting" happens most days of the week. our son comes home from school about 2 hours before i do and hubby is supposed to ensure his homework is done or mostly done before i get home. well, our son is now in 4th grade and this still barely happens. son has adhd and needs extra support and directing to stay focused, but hubby thinks he should just be able to tell him and it will be done. i swear it's like ground hog's day. i come home from work, ask about homework, look at it and it's not even close to done most days. smoking--hubby promised to stop before we were married 13 years ago--still has not. makes attempts but never follows through. this is a major problem for me. i honestly never would have pursued a relationship w a smoker and i believed him when he said he'd quite. sleeping--hubby stays up way too late and is a royal pain about waking up in the morning. i only ask he gets up at 8 on weekdays, which is 30 mins before kids leave for school. most days, i have to drag his ass out of bed. this again, has been going on for years. i feel so disrepected and frustrated that he just won't get up on his own. i do let him sleep on weekends in hopes that he wil get up like the rest of society and be productive. short fuse-- his temper is very short. he cannot speak about anything except the weather w/o raising his voice. he has no patience for the kids and often times raises his voice and cusses at them. i hate this. no child should be talked to this way, and should not know every curse word in the book before they enter school like ours did. not to mention how disrepectful he comes off to me and the kids. back to sleeping-because of his staying up late and not wanting to wake up, he hardly ever sleeps in our bed. at least i think this is his reason--so that he will not get awakened when i get up and get ready for work. this makes me feel lonely and unwanted. and sex, forget about it, hardly ever happens anymore. tv--wathches tv contantly. from after dinner to at least 12 or 1 every weeknight. he disappears to his cave and watches tv. on weekends, forget about it. unless the kids have an activity, or i make him, he favors watching tv again, only he easily does 12 hours plus each time and only resurfaces to eat something. selfish--i just think he is innately selfish. the other day there was a car stuck in the snow outside of our house, and he refused to go out and help them. same thing w/ when my parents came to visit. i would think most "normal" people would get up and help them unload their bags without being asked. but, i had to "make" him do it. this is how he has been. has to be asked to do things i would think are normal/good neighbor things to do. friends--he has none. he says he does not need any. i have friends but wish we had some couples to do things w/. i fear the large reason we don't is that he comes off as unapproachable. again, he says he does not care and want any. basically, i have lost all respect for him. i know he loves the kids and i think me. I love him too. but, i don't think he cares about anything and defintiely is not invovled in this marriage. I feel like roomates at best. I am consdiering separation and hope we could amicalbly do it. my major concern is the effect on the kids. do you moreResolved Question: corporate law or finance? which should I choose?
I'm a senior in high school, and I am considering a career in either business or corporate law. I really want to make a lot of money when I grow up (not to sound vain, but money really matters to me), and I would like a career that pays a high salary and is also something I would enjoy (I have therefore ruled out medicine). I really want to get either an MBA or JD from a top business or law school, but I don't know which to pick. I already got accepted in the wharton school of business at upenn as an undergraduate, so I don't know if that matters. What kind of track should I put myself on to get to the top of either law or business. THank you! moreVoting Question: Need help choosing a career...Please Help!?

My partner (the love of my life) is leaving me due to her inability to cope with bullying from her boss. Her "boss" is actually the owner of the company & my partner is the project manager/director. She has put in several resignation letters (without telling him the actual cause = the bullying), and he's always talked her back with promises that never were fulfilled. The last time was in May of 2008, when he told her he would cut her hours in September (when her 13 year old daughter returned to school), and keep her on the same salary (one which, by the way, had been cut nearly in half 2 years prior due to so called lack of funds). Well, when September rolled around, she found herself working even more hours. Today she is working from 8:00am till 10:15pm or later, and takes home work that keeps her up till after midnight. She is also working from 6-10 hours on Saturdays. Sadly, she has convinced herself that it was her choice to do all of the extra work, because if she didn't her boss would have to hire extra help and couldn't he afford that. Four to five times a year she goes on business trips with him (usually to Asia) and she always returns with a physical ailment that requires immediate medical attention. She is the brains behind the success of her boss's business. She researches and write's all of the book's he takes full claim for & even writes all of his interviews for the press. Even the ideas for the books have been hers. Meanwhile, he is utterly ungrateful to her for her undying loyalty to him and his company (which she's been working at for nearly 10 years). If he were grateful, he wouldn't habitually call meetings -- twice daily with the entire company to humiliate her, call her an idiot, incompetent, uncommitted, and shout the most degrading things he can think of. She has come to me in tears countless times, has experienced severe anxiety and depression, sleeplessness, and I'm fearing a nervous breakdown and PTSD are soon to come. She has lost 2 close friends within the past year because she doesn't make time for them. Now, she is leaving the love of her life (me) because of all of this craziness. I feel very sorry for her little girl who spends her after school time cooped up in her mother's office, doesn't eat dinner till between 10:45pm & 12:00am (depending on when work ends). Her daughter has expressed wishing to live with her father, and this has only added to my partner's fear & guilt about being a failure. She is leaving me because, in her words, she experiences worry, fear and grief about spending so little time with me. She feels like a total failure. Despite me assuring her that I have never been upset with her, only deeply concerned about her health and well-being, as well as her relationship with her daughter, as a result of her having little to no time for her. It's so sad how workplace bullying can destroy a person, their mental, emotional, and physical health, as well as their most valued relationships with those they love the most. It's also incredibly excruciating and frustrating knowing that there is nothing I can do to help her, so long as she is in complete denial that she is, in fact, a victim of bullying in the workplace. moreResolved Question: Did I make the biggest mistake of my life?
I turned down a job today that had a base salary of 65k in Texas, supplying parts for Toyota. I live in Michigan with my wife and 2 young children. The job required me to live apart from my family for the next 7 months because my wife is finishing grad school here in Michigan where we live. I was let go from GM 4 months ago and this has been my only offer since and I let it slip away because I couldn't bare to be away from my wife and my kids (ages 3 and the other is 2 months). I don't know if and/or when I'll get another offer even close to that in this economy and working in the auto industry (I am a production manager with a business degree). I feel like I have doomed my family. moreResolved Question: Can a school hold you back for not doing community service?
In my school they made 8 hours a year of community service mandatory. I did eight hours last year and the employer (Salvation Army) treated me like shit and they have paid employees and adjust their yearly salaries due to money brought in that year (so they can remain a "charitable" organization). Most of the places on the list are either "charitable" or they supposedly use all profits for upkeep making them non-profit. I work 20 hours a week. I provide twenty hours of service to my community per week and they in return give me reparations for my work. In my opinion true service rewards people people who work more or harder, not thanks them for it. I know for a fact the salvation army would not mow my lawn for me or something. I 100% honestly believe that all of our options for community service are not fair and should not be made mandatory. I go to high school to get good grades, pass and go to college. Not to work along side people avoiding jail time for DWI. I also believe I should give to the community and not a few individuals pockets. I want to know if the school can legally hold my high school degree if I don't do community service. I really do not feel comfortable working for a business for free because the school threatens to hold my degree unless I do it. moreTop Business School Salary Links
