Credibility counts

The real skill of an entrepreneur is how they transition those early numbers – moving from 20 to 50 is less challenging from an entrepreneurial perspective and is typically where management and operational skills are more acutely tested.

So back to our J-curve…

If you can systematically build your numbers from the bottom up with real client engagements and bona fide pipeline, then the inherent credibility of the overall proposition increases and so the discount applied to your projections will reduce.

Finally, a VC worth his salt will spend considerable time in due diligence validating the bottom up analysis to satisfy himself that the projections are grounded in fact. If the findings of this work suggest that the projections are outrageously optimistic, then it reflects badly on the entrepreneur and substantially reduces the probability that the VC will determine that the entrepreneur really knows what he's doing and can be trusted to operate the business post investment. more

Suckoo's word to YES grads

GRADUATES of the 2008 Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme's (YES) training programme have been urged to engage in the process of self-knowledge and evaluation.

This advice was given recently by Minister of Family, Youth, Sports and Environment Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo as she delivered remarks at the YES' graduation and prize-giving ceremony at the Accra Beach Hotel & Resort.

Byer-Suckoo told the graduating entrepreneurs that they were set apart from the average business person by specific traits and characteristics and they should visualise, plan and manage their business to influence the corporate world.

Realistic goals

She further said they had been given the opportunity through training to set realistic goals for their own advancement. more

Quattrone in Google Embrace Sees Vindication Haunted by E-Mail

Quattrone's comeback has set VCs and entrepreneurs buzzing about whether he can restore his name and reclaim the clients who once flooded his Palo Alto office.

``He beat the legal rap. But on Wall Street, all you really have is your reputation, and he took a hit to his,'' Velocity Capital's Kessler says. ``He's going to have to dig himself out of that, and maybe he will, and maybe he won't.''

Three weeks after Qatalyst opened, Quattrone bagged a high- profile job: Google Inc. Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt, an old friend, sought his advice on how Microsoft Corp.'s hostile $47.5 billion bid for Yahoo! Inc. would affect Google.

Quattrone declined to be interviewed for this article.

``As you might imagine right now, things are a bit hectic with all the things a startup has to get done,'' he wrote in a March 18 e-mail. more

Pandora radio free for Logitech Squeezebox owners

Users can register to Pandora and listen for free over their PCs, though they will have to listen to advertisements. For a $36 annual fee, Pandora eliminates all external advertising. The service has 15 million registered listeners and is also available on mobile devices such as the Squeezebox and Apple iPhone. The Logitech Squeezebox Duet is priced at $400, with the Squeezebox priced at $300. The Logitech Transporter network music player costs $2,000.

Polyester producer Indo Rama Q1 net sales jump by 15%

Indo Rama Synthetics (India) Limited, the country's largest dedicated polyester manufacturer, today announced its Q1 results for the financial year 2008 – 09.

Q1 Results for FY 2008 – 09:
Operating EBIDTA for the quarter has registered an increase of 125% at Rs.58.72 crores as compared to Rs.26.04 crores during the same period last year. Operating Profit before Tax reaches Rs. 34.59 crores — against Rs.7.36 crores during Q1 2007-08, a jump of 370%. Operating Cash Profit rose up to Rs. 34.38 crores - an increase of 400% over 6.87 crores recorded during Q1 last year.

Net sales for the quarter stood at Rs.790.17 crores, higher by 15% as compared to Rs.686.93 crores in the corresponding quarter. Exports zoomed to Rs.156.49 crores as compared to 101.16 crores, recording a growth of 55% in Value terms, a healthy jump of 42% and recorded 24557 MT, over 17278 MT registered during the corresponding quarter. more
