Business confidence in Singapore dives

Singapore - Business confidence in Singapore has slumped to its lowest level since the end of 2004, according to a survey Monday. While sales and profit figures were largely unchanged in the last three months of 2007, prospects have fallen sharply for the next six months, The Business Times and SIM University poll revealed.

The survey showed that the business prospects net balance - or difference between the percentage of optimistic and pessimistic companies - fell to 20 per cent from 39 per cent.

"The firms may be overly pessimistic because of the grim prospects in the US economy, accompanying volatile and weak stock markets and rising oil prices," said Chow Kit Boey, director of the quarterly survey of 128 companies.

Some 71 per cent of the firms have overseas business. more

Andover business owners have their say over parking fee increase

ANDOVER — Downtown business owners came out in force last night to oppose the 50-cent parking meter rates set to go into effect in June.

In response, the selectmen decided to form a task force to study the business district parking problem.

The board could decide to keep the rates at the current 25 cents, add more free short-term parking in the town's center, create parking permits or continue with its plan to double the rates.

"We want to create a plan so when we do implement fee changes, there's agreement to what it looks like," selectmen Chairman Brian Major said.

The 20 shop owners that attended the meeting said an increase to 50 cents would deal a whopping blow to businesses that will be struggling this spring when the Main Street construction project begins causing large-scale disruptions around their businesses. more

Resolved Question: Are Illegals UNWANTED in this town?? Another town, another UNwelcome illegals sign!!?

illegal immigrants Proposals would affect landlords, employers; some say rules would draw lawsuits 12:00 AM CDT on Monday, August 21, 2006 By STEPHANIE SANDOVAL / The Dallas Morning News FARMERS BRANCH – Illegal immigrants are responsible for much of what's wrong with Farmers Branch, says City Council member Tim O'Hare. So he proposes making it harder for illegal immigrants to live and work in the city. Today, the City Council will discuss possible ways to do that, including prohibiting landlords from leasing to illegal immigrants, penalizing businesses that employ them, making English the city's official language and ceasing publication of any documents in Spanish, and eliminating subsidies for illegal immigrants in the city's youth programs. Some Hispanic advocates say doing so would brand Farmers Branch as a racist community and embroil the city in protests and lawsuits. "The reason I got on the City Council was because I saw our property values declining or increasing at a level that was below the rate of inflation," Mr. O'Hare said. "When that happens, people move out of our neighborhoods, and what I would call less desirable people move into the neighborhoods, people who don't value education, people who don't value taking care of their properties." He also said local schools have dropped in recent years in state rankings, and retail operations cater to low-income and Spanish-speaking customers, leaving "no place for people with a good income to shop." "Illegal immigrants are a large cause of it," he said. So he wants to see the council adopt provisions similar to those adopted by Hazelton, Pa., in July and since then adopted or under consideration by other cities in Pennsylvania, California and Florida. The 2000 census showed that 25.2 percent of the population of Farmers Branch was foreign-born. The census did not report how many were illegal immigrants. more
