Japan business sentiment at 4-year low

TOKYO, April 1 (Reuters) - Japanese business sentiment fell to a four-year low in the first quarter, a Bank of Japan survey showed on Tuesday, providing further evidence of a dismal economic outlook and reinforcing market speculation that the central bank may cut interest rates later in the year.

The BoJ's tankan quarterly corporate survey also showed that Japanese companies are cautious about capital spending in the financial year that started on Tuesday, with small companies that employ most Japanese the most pessimistic.

Darrell Kelley, who served previous executive stints with Enterprise Florida, the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission and Sprint, resigned as chief operating officer of Holland & Knight, the giant law firm announced Friday. Kelley, 65, joined Holland & Knight in November 2005 and worked in its Orlando office with managing partner Howell Melton. Melton announced last month he would not seek another five-year term. He'll be succeeded next month by Steven Sonberg, who works in the global firm's Miami office. Kelley said his resignation would "clear the way" for Sonberg to assemble a new leadership team.

Business prospects weak for year

CONFIDENCE has plummeted across all five business groups surveyed by the National Bank, with 58% of firms now expecting economic conditions to deteriorate in the coming year.

The bank�s chief economist, Cameron Bagrie, said the latest business outlook survey showed growth had stalled and prospects looked weak for the rest of the year, but he was loath to call it a recession. The economy was in for a tough year, but nothing it had not endured before.

The economy had been bingeing on borrowed money, the current account deficit was high, there was pressure from inflation, people had invested too heavily in housing and there would now be a period of correction, or what he called tough love.

It would not be a quick fix and for those who had borrowed heavily, there would be some pain, he warned. more

Island leaders plead with senator for housing help

Between an impending credit crunch and a lack of affordable housing, homeowners and renters alike are facing uncertain futures.

U.S. Senator Patty Murray sat down with a panel of Island County leaders Wednesday to discuss pressing issues. The longtime county advocate, who owns a home on Whidbey, found herself fielding questions that primarily surrounded the housing issue. Transportation was a close second.

Murray, a Democrat who in 1992 became the first woman to represent the state in the U.S. Senate, just returned home from a road trip around the state, during which time she spoke with Washington homeowners.

Langley Mayor Paul Samuelson said the lack of affordable housing has caused a shift in demographics. With home prices continuing to skyrocket, an older population is replacing younger families. more

PENNSYLVANIA LOST JOBS, JOBLESS RATE UP IN FEBRUARY

| Pennsylvania reported a loss of 8,200 jobs in February, a faster rate of decline than job losses nationally. The unemployment rate also rose slightly.

The state's unemployment rate -- a gauge of how many people are looking for work -- rose slightly to 4.9 percent, above the national rate of 4.8 percent. Most sectors remained stable in February, while the construction, trade, transportation and utility sectors slid, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reported.

I feel partial to it, without ever visiting it. I have been to hundreds of college websites, but none held the same warmth that W&M's did: the shades of green; the welcoming campus scenery; the stimulating thoughts of engaging, profound discussions with fellow passionate students. I have always been educated in small schools, and W&M is very much the environment I yearn for. I am politically leaned to the left, enjoy an abundance of community involvement, and would truly enjoy four years in a place that appears to be the ideal opposite of distracting, anti-scholar Miami. I dream of a place that would embrace me for being passionate, creative, over-achieving, and involved, rather than deem me as being "too intense." I dream of William & Mary. more

I am a rising senior in high school in the class of 2010. I recently visited Brown University and fell IN LOVE. If anyone can tell me if I have a chance there, I would greatly appreciate it! And if you can, please recommend any other schools that might be a better fit. In July 2006 I completed My M.Tech course and on 8th July I went to UAE. When I was in U.A.E I had stayed with her in her home in Ras Al Khaimah. I was unemployed and I depended on them. My father-in-law behaved arrogantly towards me. He doesn't know how to behave to others. After reaching UAE he continuously tormented me, mentally and physically. After getting the job her father continuously persuaded me, to take a big amount as bank loan for his business purpose. Things started changing when I had a minor verbal exchange with my father in law (Ashi’s father) regarding my wife and her well being. Everything worked fine for few months and we (me and Ashi) shifted to a new house. While I was in office, as part of the conspiracy my wife took my permission to leave my house on the pretext to attend a three days company business meeting at Muscat Hotel, Trivandrum, Kerala. I granted her instant permission and also helped her in shopping and personally dropped her at the sharjah International Airport on 10th January 2007. After reaching Kerala she stopped contacting me and all my efforts to contact her failed. Later I realized that all these days I have been constantly cheated. She opened my bank locker on 11th January 2007(SBT, Kadakkavour Branch, Locker No: 157) with a fake authorization letter and took her gold. I couldn't believe my ears and to find the truth. By the advice of her mother I resigned my job and returned to Kerala on 16 th January 2007. Once I reached Kerala I learnt that my wife returned to UAE on the same day. In order to avoid confrontations and for my personal safety I had left from Kerala. On March, 2002, I joined Boy Scout Troop 4070, and it has forever changed my life. Last September marked the beginning of my twelfth year as being a member of the Boy Scouts of America (B.S.A.), five years as a Cub Scout and seven years as a Boy Scout. I was also a member of Venturing Crew 4079 (Venturing is a division of the Boy Scouts of America) for two years, one of which I served as President. In 2005 I was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society. In 2006, I attended a week-long National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) conference, where I graduated. In 2007 I was asked to return to be on the NYLT staff, which required one-hundred and eighty plus hours of public-speaking and leadership training. And in June, 2008, I was promoted to be my unit’s Senior Patrol Leader, which is the highest office of authority that a youth member can hold. Early last January I began planning out my Eagle Scout Project and on Thursday, March 12th, it was approved to begin by my District Round Table Committee. For my Eagle Scout Project I plan to give leadership in designing and building five bookcases for the library at Saint Agnes School. Each bookcase will be custom built to fit its location and the books it will be housing. The bookshelves will be built to match neighboring bookshelves, and finishes will be matched to adjacent bookcases or at the school’s preference. In addition, I will also enter two bookcases’ worth of unprocessed books into the library’s catalog system. My project will benefit Saint Agnes School because the bookcases will replace broken bookshelves, make uses of otherwise unusable space, replace temporary, makeshift bookcases, and house books that were recently acquired by the school that currently have no place to be stored. Cataloging the books will also save countless hours of time for the librarian. I have a 10 month old baby girl. I recently passed the GED test with my scores in the top 86%-99% rank, meaning in the top 1%-14% in each of the subjects given. I spent 10 years as a critically successful artist. However, due to the financial aspect(I refuse to go commercial and I have a family to feed), and the fact that I'm burned out, I would like to take full advantage of my recent layoff from my "day job", and find a new passion/career and excel in it, both for myself and my family. After an entire year of 'deliberation' with myself and my wife, I have formulated a plan to obtain a vocational certificate while I am unemployed, and then to get a better job than what I had before, so that I can realistically pursue my degree. However, I have had a great deal of stress stemming from my background, which is where you guys come in: - Ages 15-18, I had spent some time in two private psychiatric facilities on four different occasions for depression/suicidal thoughts. Two of those were for documented 'attempts'. I was just crying for help and going about it the wrong way. .Obviously, I dropped out of high school. "The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and pressure by criminal gangs and drug cartels," the command said in the report published Nov. 25. "How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state." Retiring CIA chief Michael Hayden told reporters on Friday that that Mexico could rank alongside Iran as a challenge for Obama — perhaps a greater problem than Iraq. I would like to go straight from undergrad to grad school, I feel as though I can offset my poor early performance with a high GPA and GMAT score around 700. I am a high school junior in a very competitive school in California. I am American-Asian (Indian) and moved to California at the age of 8. I'm looking for wither public universities in California or private universities anywhere in the U.S. Academics: My gpa is about 4.0 Weighted. I only took the SAT's once and received a 2260: Math- 800 CR- 670 Writing- 790 Total- 2260 I have taken and am taking many honors/AP courses. EC's: Co-founded and was VP of the chess club in freshman year. 3 years of Spanish club Planning to do Academic Decathlon next year. Starting a Future Business Leaders of America chapter at my school. Played two years of tennis for the school team. I have played chess competitively since sixth grade and have received many awards. Some of them include: 1st place K-8 in NorCal 8th grade Tied for 11th in World Open in 2006 and for 14th in 2007 in Philadelphia, PA. I am currently ranked among the top 50 players for my age in the country. Community Service: Last summer, I when I visited India, I volunteered in an orphanage for a week, teaching children and playing with them. I also donated food, clothes, and toys, as well as as $200 of my chess earnings from tournaments.I lived with the kids there for a week and helped teach the children, play with them, and spend quality time with them. It was one of the most enriching experiences of my life (about 120 hours). Helped teach kids in summer school in 2005. (80 hours) Have taught chess. Active volunteer in my local community for the city (40-50 hours). I am leaning towards the business side, mostly finance and economics. I also plan to write my essays about my volunteer experience at the orphanage, my chess experiences and what they have taught me, or my experiences immigrating to the US.
