Model 'knew too much about Rivkin business'

THE late stockbroker Rene Rivkin was concerned that model Caroline Byrne knew "too much about his business and private life", a Supreme Court jury has heard.

Rivkin's driver, Gordon Eric Wood, 44, is accused of throwing his live-in girlfriend to her death at The Gap, at Watsons Bay in Sydney, about 11.30pm on June 7, 1995.

In his opening address yesterday, Crown prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, QC, told the jury that Wood had urged others to invest in a printing company associated with Rivkin, which he told them had been deliberately burned down but was over-insured.

"It's a set-up," Wood said, adding that "government people" were involved. He named the person he believed was the arsonist to Ms Byrne, the jury heard.

On Christmas Eve 1993, Offset Alpine's premises and equipment were destroyed by fire in suspicious circumstances, said Mr Tedeschi. more

Review: HP iPAQ9 10 Scores For Business

For the handful of users not interested in the iPhone (whether for business reasons or a vanilla preference for good old Windows Mobile), HP is now shipping the HP iPAQ 910 Business Messenger. This is the smartphone for the serious business user.

The Test Center has looked at other members of the iPAQ family before. The 910 follows the other iPAQs in look and feel -- sleek, high-gloss black, and easy to hold. The fit and finish is of high quality and the 910 doesn't get very hot to touch, a very important criterion for a handheld device.

Measuring 4.5 x 2.5 x 0.6-inches and weighing 5.4 oz, the 910 is average size. Much slimmer than the Palm Treo, slimmer but wider than the new Centro, a little thicker and about an ounce heavier than the BlackBerry Bold, it's slightly thicker than the iPhone 3G. more

Business School Gmat Questions asked

Open Question: Has anyone suffered from swollen glands?

I woke up 11 days ago with swollen glands and they are still swollen. I have been told by a couple doctors that they are due to my lymp nodes fighting a viral infection. I am really upset as even though I know that life is not fair and that I have been blessed so much, I have my GMAT exam (entrance exam for business school) in 10 days and this is affecting me. I don't know how I contracted this problem and it has made me so upset. I have not been pleasant to be around as my mood is constantly bad. I think some of it is from the fact that I have not been able to run a lot. What did anyone take to resolve this and how long did it take? Sorry if I sound like a spoilt brat (I am a 26 year old guy) but I just feel so mad. more

Open Question: What are my chances of getting into a PhD in Business with a background in International Affairs?

Hello Everyone, I am researching obtaining a PhD in Business Administration. Specifically PhD programs focusing on Strategy & International Business, and I just wanted to get feedback on my qualifications and what my chances are: 1. Have a B.A. in International Relations with a Major G.P.A of 3.6. 2. Have a Masters in International Affairs from Georgetown University, focusing on Foreign Policy and International Business, with a G.P.A. of 3.8 3. I have published a thesis on an issue related to foreign policy and international business, focusing on the role of Multinational Corporations in foreign policy and international affairs. 4. I do have 5+ years of work experience in management and administration. The only thing that I have left to do is score a high score on my GMAT. Also, I am doing my best to be realistic about the schools that I am applying for, so please some feedback on my choices would be most appreciated: 1. UC IRVINE--PhD in Strategy focusing on Global Strategy 2. UCLA--PhD in International Business & Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior 3. Harvard Business School--DBA in Strategy 4. University of Miami School of Business--PhD in Strategy/International Business 5. Temple University--Fox School of Business--PhD in International Business Administration/Strategy 6. Rutgers University--PhD in International Business/Strategy 7. University of Hawaii Manoa--PhD in Organization and Strategy 8. Old Dominion University--PhD in Strategy/International Business Any feedback is greatly appreciated, as applying for PhD programs for Business School is both financially and emotionally draining! Thank you all so much! more

Open Question: Can I get my MBA in Canada without having an undergraduate degree?

I'm contemplating doing my masters in Ontario, but all the schools say they require a previous degree to be considered. After speaking with an admissions counselor at Schulich School of Business (York U campus) he said that it is possible to get in to a masters program but very difficult ie- i need to score like a 650+ on the GMAT to be considered. I just wanted to know if anyone knows of someone who has done this. I have 7yrs.+ of management experience in the private sector (printing, logistics, and management) and 2 diplomas from Canadian Colleges. My grades were not too high but the diplomas were in design/animation. more

Resolved Question: Can I get into Harvard Business School for an MBA?

My undergraduate degree in the U.K. was fair, I graduated with a second class, upper degree (which is about a 3.5 GPA) in mechanical engineering. However I don't think that I'll ever get into Harvard with that. Luckily, I'm starting a master's degree in the U.S. this year which may be a chance for me to redeem myself. If I am able to get a 3.8GPA or thereabout in my master's followed by a good five years of experience as an engineer and high GMAT scores do you think the likes of Harvard, MIT and Wharton would be willing to overlook my less than stellar undergraduate performance (which is a bit low due to my first two years at university)? more

Resolved Question: I am currently doing the online MBA from Florida Tech and dont know if I should transfer to another school.?

I recently found out that schools aside from the accreditation for the whole school also have a specific accreditation for the business program: AACSB. I have taken already 4 courses out of the 12 courses to get my MBA from Florida Tech which is regionally accredited but not accredited by the AACSB. I havent taken the GMAT and have started to prepare though I have been out of school for like 14 years or so. My english is okay but my math not so great. The problem is that by the time I get all the stuff needed to get into a bigger MBA program and hopfully to get in I would have finished my MBA with Florida Tech. What should I do. I am 35 years old. more

Voting Question: Do business schools look any differently at a cancelled GMAT score than a poor submitted score?

I took the GMAT for the first time today and was not able to concentrate fully. Because of this my thinking ability negatively effected my performance. I have taken many practice tests (mostly tests from the GMAC, the company that puts on the real test) and have gotten a pretty good understanding of how I did before the test is scored. Long story short, I was not confident in my test today so I canceled it. Is this a bad move? Do B-Schools look down on this? Or did I just miss out on possibly doing better than I thought I did? more

Voting Question: Which MBA program in Missouri is the best?

Also, if you are a grad from one of these schools, let me know what you thought. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Why do people whine and complain about Wall Street instead of studying hard and getting a job in finance?

Wall Street (except maybe at the very top) is as close to a meritocracy as you can get in the American labor market. Wall St. firms and hedge funds hire based on your intelligence, your test scores, and your college background. So instead of whining about how "unfair" the banker bonuses are, why not get off your lazy butt, open up some physics and math and economics books, study hard, go to a good college, do well in your classes, score well on aptitude tests like the GMAT or LSAT, and then apply for a job in finance, or with an elite consulting group like McKinsey? That's what I did, before I went to law school. I did well in high school, got into a top college, majored in econ, did well in my classes, and then went to work as a junior analyst for JP Morgan. Now, in my case, I didn't really like the long hours or the stressful atmosphere, so I quit and went into law and went to work for my dad's firm. But if you want the huge money, you just have to stick with it, go to an elite business school like Harvard or Stern, then get yourself into the management track. You could also lateral over into a boutique firm or hedge fund. If you have a physics/math background, you can go into quantitative finance, too. A top-notch hedge fund quant can make millions in a single year. But instead of doing this, all I see Americans doing is whine, whine, whine. I see lazy high school kids getting pregnant and smoking rock instead of studying hard. Well you know what? You get into life what you put in. Don't hate on the bankers for working way harder than you've ever dreamed was possible. They didn't choose for you to be lazy. YOU chose that fate for YOURSELF. more

Voting Question: Will top universities accept me to their Graduate Program?

Im scared to even apply. I want a master from one of the top 100 university that are found on the Financial Times listing. One of my favorites is Cass Business School in City University. My sister went to it. I have a 2.2 GPA in Business Adminsitration: Finance and I know it sucks! I have been working since October 2007 which till this day makes up for almost 2 1/2 years of experience. Two of those years in Insurance. I am currently a Projects Leader. I haven't done my GMAT cause I am scared to even start this path because of my VERY LOW GPA. I need advise on how to start about doing this, thats if i can. Thank you. more

Voting Question: will University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL) accept me even though my GMAT score is low?

I recently took my GMAT exam and I am applying to the University of Missouri St. Louis Business graduate school. Resolved Question: Low GMAT but decent G.P.A. will my school adjust their requirements for acceptance?

I took the GMAT today and didn't do well. I scored a 500, but I knew I had signed up for the wrong test a few days prior to taking the exam. I'm much more English minded and haven't done much math throughout my undergrad business degree. My question is, the school I attend and want to get my MBA from has the following criteria. You will be admitted with a 2.75 G.P.A in your last 60 units of course work and a 550 GMAT, no question. I have a 3.2 G.P.A which has gotten better throughout my schooling. Do I need to stress on the low GMAT or am I okay. I don't know the scaling when G.P.A. is higher than mandatory requirements but GMAT is lower. I am also from the town where I go to school and in my state students from local counties are given preference and if they meet the requirements are admitted. The school I am applying to is a CSU, any thoughts. more

Resolved Question: How valuable is work experience when applying to Business Schools to get your MBA?

I'm graduating in May and looking into applying to Business Schools to get my MBA, but I know a lot of universities recommend about 2 years of actual work experience. I haven't taken the GMAT's yet but I've scored in the 500's on practice tests and my GPA should be 3.67-3.68 after this semester. Do those help my chances to make up for the lack of work experience? Also would getting a MS be a better route or just a waste of time? more

Resolved Question: Will an MBA make it easier for me to get a finance job that will sponsor me a series 7 exam?

I graduated Spring of '09 with a BS in Business Admin. from University of California Riverside. I planned on hitting the ground running, but found myself stuck between a hard place and a rock. My goal was to get a job in a finance firm, and then receive sponsorship for a series 7 exam, yet all the job postings since my graduation haven't offered much interest to my goal. Every position in a finance firm requires the applicant to have a series 7 and 66 before applying, yet how do I get one if I can't find sponsorship. This places a sort of catch-22 on my situation. In one case, I want to work for company A to get sponsored for the series 7, but in the other case, company A requires series 7 prior to applying for the position. All my job searches have lead me to the same predicament. I understand that we are in a recession, so I have been studying in the mean time for the past 3 months to take the GMAT. I believe if I go to a decent b-school, it should open some doors for me to get into a firm that might give me sponsorship. I am still young, 23 years old, and don't mind going back to school for an additional 2 years if that means I can get the ball rolling. Do you guys think that what I am planning is a good idea and it will help me in the long run, or am I wasting my time? Like I mentioned previously, I am young and don't mind going back to school as long as it gets me going towards my goal. In addition, I figured going back to school during a recession is better than sitting at home working part time making little to nothing. more

Resolved Question: If the GMAT can be waived for some applicants, can the MCAT be waived also?

Resolved Question: Top 10 MBA programs in California?

I am studying really hard for the GMAT (about 6 months) and plan/ hope to get at least a 700 (scored a 640 last month on a Kaplan CAT) and want to know how one might rank the top 10 mba programs in Southern California. I know UCLA, USC, and Berkley will be amongst the first, but if i dont get into those schools i wouls still like to apply to a few more as fall back schools, as long as they have a strong and well known MBA program. A school with a lot of connections is a must and as a California resident, price isn't a big issue so long as the mba program pays for itself with a good job. My application would include: BS in Business Admin. from Uc Riverside 3.1 GPA (1 D letter grade) 2 letters of rec from professors with phd and a letter of rec from a lawyer 1 of the letters of rec from a phd was a co recipent of a the noble peace prize. The rofessor also recieved his phd from berkley. I plan on getting at least a 700 before i apply (this will be my first recorded gmat attemp) i have 5 yrs work experience running / managing a family owned business in addition i have 1 year of exp after graduating last year of working for a marketing company i would like the list top be made with those in mind so i have a realistic understanding of which school i can get accepted to. But i still want another list of schools that are the best in california and would like to know if there is anything i can do or strive for to better my chances at getting into a school luke UCLA. Thx in advance. more

Voting Question: What are the requirements for admissions into an MBA program? =)?

I want to make sure I get as many of the qualifications done in time to apply for grad school. some facts: -undergrad junior with associate degrees -international relations major(BA)(2012) -communication major(BA)(2012)(likely to graduate with 3.5-3.7 for both) -freelance makeup artist -online business -community service (centered around international & youth issues) ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: 1) i am a non business major and i would prefer to go directly into a program after i graduate. i heard that some schools require that you have work experience after bachelors? or does my time working at a bank during undergrad count? 2) for my major the highest i had to take was statistics, macro & micro economics. i am assuming i should take calculus before applying? any other class suggestions? 3) so i need a good gpa, gmat score & business experience for admissions? thank you for helping me out (in advance)! more

Resolved Question: GMAT diagnostic question?

Hey, I have a deadline of 16 March to get into my business school. I started a 9 day tutorial course yesterday and took a GMAT diagnostic test. I received my score today of 580 which I am happy as it is the first test but the B school has an average of 700 so for sure I need to improve (hopefully with the course and self study I can achieve this goal). Now my question is that I am told I can take 1 GMAT exam every 30 days so does it make sense to take an exam in 4 weeks (says 12 Feb) then another on 15 March (deadline is 16 March) so I can choose whichever score is better? My school will only look at the score I submit so the other won't matter. I need to improve mainly in the quantitative section (21/37) whilst the verbal was much stronger (35/41). We did not do the essay sections as it is not part of the diagnostic test. Thanks and please let me know if you have taken the GMAT already.Roaring, thanks for your reply. Yes the application needs to be complete but they accept the unofficial score which is given straight after the test so both dates (Feb and March) should be fine as long as before 16 March. I think it makes sense to take both exams and then choose the better result. more

Resolved Question: Need professional advice: should i drop my math major to graduate early and take a business internship?

Hello all. I apologize in advance for the length of this, but I'd really appreciate some input on this idea that I keep tossing around. Currently, I am a 2nd semester junior double majoring in mathematics and business administration. In my business degree, I am specializing in accounting and finance. When I graduate, I will be able to take the CPA test immediately, as I will have more than 150 hours and all required accounting coursework. Originally, I was going to take 4 math classes next semester (I know, I was crazy), and would be able to graduate a semester early with both degrees. However, one professor wouldn't let me into Calc-based probability, and since I go to a tiny university, I'll have to wait a whole year to take it. The reason I wasn't let in was because I dropped Calculus III last semester, which is now a prerequisite (instead of a concurrent course, like I was told). At this level, I'm not really enjoying my math courses as much. In Abstract Algebra I, I ended up with my first C ever because, frankly, I just did not care about the material at all. My schedule is so spread out now that I'll only have a max of 13 hours a semester since I've almost completed my business degree and I only need 6 more classes for my math degree. I think I should be able to pull B's in my remaining math courses and A's in my business ones. However, I can drop my math major down to a minor and graduate a semester early like I'd originally planned to. In addition, if I drop my math classes, I'll be able to pick up an area of emphasis in marketing. Here are some more considerations to this now very-long post: (1) I was originally intending to get the math degree as a backup in case I wanted to pursue and actuarial career. However, I don't think I have a desire to do this since I don't look forward to the prospect of my next 10 years being dominated by tests. (2) My ultimate post-graduation plans are to get a Masters of Finance and work in the area of asset management, particular in the areas of fundamental, value, or special situations (distressed debt, etc.) investing. For this career path, I really don't need what higher mathematics offers, and I plan to avoid master's programs that focus on financial engineering. (3) I'm worried that I will look intellectually weak to grad schools by dropping my math major. I come from a tiny school in WV, so I think it'll be hard for me to get into the University of Florida, my top choice right now for finance. However, I think that, by dropping my math major, I'll be able to better focus on my GMAT (I got a 1500 on the SAT, so hopefully I can replay this) and will have at least 9 months of full-time work experience under my belt, in addition to the internship at a regional accounting firm (100+ people) that I'll get this summer. (4) As a plus for graduate school, I am in the McNair Scholar's Program at my school. However, I am doing my research project with a mathematics professor, which will look odd if I just have a math minor. Why did I pick this person? Like I said, the school I go to is tiny and the finance professor is rarely there and has little practical knowledge, which is what I like. Thanks for trudging through this mess! more

Resolved Question: What business schools should I consider?

Hi, I just graduated from UCLA with a degree in economics and a 3.25 GPA. I haven't taken the GMAT yet. I am planning to go to business school, but I'm not completely sure. I am extremely interested in information systems and would like to go to a business school strong in that. Also, if possible, I'd prefer to go to school in California, anywhere near LA is ideal. Voting Question: Low Undergrad GPA Considering MS-Finance and MBA?

I completed my undergraduate degree in finance from a top 10 business school and received below a 3.0 average. I wasn't focused in school previously and am now looking at the options before me. I am wondering if earning a MS in Finance and doing very well in that program will help me get into a top 5 MBA program. I understand that a 700+ GMAT is required. Any advice?I completed my undergraduate degree in finance from a top 10 business school and received below a 3.0 average. I wasn't focused in school previously and am now looking at the options before me. I am wondering if earning a MS in Finance and doing very well in that program will help me get into a top 5 MBA program. I understand that a 700+ GMAT is required. Any advice? I officially graduated in May 2008 due to technical reasons, but have been working full-time since October 2007. Started my career at Merrill Lynch and now at a smaller firm and am heading their research efforts. An MBA, in my opinion, doesn't dig deep into finance as a MS in Finance degree would. That is another reason why I am considering an MS also. Another option would be for me to try to go to a top 15 MBA program (where I received my undergraduate degree) and then enroll into a IVY League university for my MS in Finance. Your thoughts? more

Resolved Question: What do I need to get into business school? (planning from HS)?

I'm in high school right now (sophomore). I really want to pursue a career in business (I know about the economy). However I really want to go to a nice school (Hawthorne, Cornell, UCLA, etc.). What should I start doing? What will I need to enter business school eventually? GMAT scores? GPA range? other things? Please help, I want to start doing everything I can even as a sophomore in high school. more

Resolved Question: Why is the Verbal part of the GMAT all written?

I was just looking at the test and I was thinking. Why don't school test on how well you can talk about the problems. Why all written? Isn't it better to be a better talker in business than a writer? more

Resolved Question: I did badly in college...but I want to get into a top MBA program. Can I do this?

I'm in my junior year so far at San Francisco State University (not Stanford or Harvard...sigh), and I only have a pitiful 3.27 GPA so far. I'm majoring in Accounting (I'm 20 years old). I would love to go to a top tier business school, because I hear that the reputation of your business school is of utmost importance. Specifically, I have my eyes focused on Dartmouth's Tuck, Kellogg, or Georgetown. I also took a practice Kaplan GMAT test, got a 700, took the official study guide, got a 760. I've also been working part-time as an office manager for a few years. I'm also in an academic accounting association (Beta Alpha Psi). However, my poor grades and shoddy school will prevent me from going to business school right after graduation. With that in mind, what if I got about 5 years of work experience and take time to teach English abroad for at least a year? If I managed to worm my way into a decent company, would I then have a fighting chance at my dream schools? Thanks. :-) more

Resolved Question: How do I prepare for GMAT test?

I'll finish my BA next week and I am applying for a graduate business school that requires a GMAT test. I need to score over 550. I'm very poor with standardized test but wanted to use 3-weeks for intensive preparation will that be enough to get over 550 score? I also found out that it is a computer based test. I type very slow. How will that impact the test? or do I really need to learn fast-typing before taking the GMAT? thanks for whatever advice you can give. more

i am a senior in college majoring in business management and i am simply stuck on the decision of whether i should go to grad school or try to find an entry level position. what should i do in the state of this economy? i have applied to over 20 jobs, went to numerous conferences to network where i had the opportunity of interviewing with three fortune 500 companies, and have done a non paid internship but i have had no luck so now i am considering going to grad school, but the only thing about grad school is i havent taken the gmat and i dont have more than 2 years of work experience. i still have time to take the gmat and i have a 3.6 GPA but idk this decision is so hard. further information: no student loans can come back to live with parents what is your advice for me? what should i do? what will be in my best interest in today's economy? more

Resolved Question: Can my GMAT score substitute for a GRE score?

I have been studying for the GMAT and plan to take the test in the next month, but I am beginning to wonder if Business school is where I want to go. Will many schools accept GMAT scores in place of GRE scores if an applicant has taken the GMAT? I know GRE for GMAT is rare but I was curious if it were the same the other way around. I'm particularly interested in California State schools.California State schools = UC's (I forget there IS a difference!) more

Resolved Question: Does it matter the college you come from when applying to an MBA program?

Resolved Question: Should I take the GMAT and go to Grad school now, or get work experience first?

I am graduating this spring with a bachelor's degree in accounting. I am starting to consider my options for graduate school. I noticed that the "avg age" of many MBA students entering grad school is 28 at top tier business schools. Should I still try to go straight to grad school, or get work experience first? I may only be going for one year to get the Masters in accounting in order to become a CPA more

Resolved Question: Employers: What are my job prospects/MBA chances after graduating from Vanderbilt?

If I graduate from Vanerbilt with a degree in Communications and a minor in Corporate Strategy, what are my chances of finding a decent-paying job after graduation? Resolved Question: Extremely Low GPA...any hope at all of getting into Georgetown or Cornell Business School?

So far, I'm a junior in college at San Francisco State University. I'm 20, and I'm a F/T employee and a F/T student. (I've recently been promoted as an Office Manager at a recruiting firm for financial institutions). I've travelled extensively, and next year, I'm set to teach English in Nepal for a few months. I've taken practice GMAT tests and did almost perfectly, and I'm a very strong writer (read: essays! lol) But my GPA is pathetic. I'm double-majoring in Accounting & Economics, and I'm a Junior, and so far my overall GPA is only 3.4... Will my undergrad school, short work experience, and atrocious GPA completely blow my chances, or can I try to boost my grades up and give it a shot? Thanks, I really appreciate your help. (-; more

Resolved Question: Chances of getting into a top 15 MBA program?

Hi, I am currently getting undergraduate degrees in Finance and Management from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University (top 15 bachelor's business school- I think it usually ranks at times number 5, number 7, number 9, number 11 and number 15) and minor degrees in french and journalism. At graduation time, if I have a -3.6 GPA -Two internships -A thesis paper published on a theory on immigrant entrepreneurship in America at different decades with statistical proof conducted in new york city (published in a scholarly journal) -Started and am president of a Management Skills Improvement club (wrote a few case studies with the help of faculty) -Started a philanthropy initiative raising a couple thousand dollars of money each year for inner city schools and volunteer program -Member of and write in the journal of an Emerging Markets club -Study abroad at Oxford University (Among other things I am still planning on doing, and job experience of 2-3 years- at a place that is still to be decided where I work diligently and dexterously) And hopefully, a GMAT score of high 600s or low 700s- right around the margin (based on practice tests) Major Hobbies: -Wine making at home (from crushing the grapes, to fertilizing and preserving)- I think I might go into a small business of selling personalized wines before I graduate -Horse Polo and riding (I attended a Polo camp in India as well) What do you think, roughly, are my chances of getting into a good MBA program. Some of the ones I am considering are: -Duke University Fuqua School of Business -Yale School of Management -Dartmouth College Tuck School of Business -Cornell University Johnson School of Business -Wharton at UPenn However, ones in the tier just below, such as UCLA are considered as well. Thanks! more
