The United States has been enriched culturally by immigrants from many nations. The Harlem Renaissance was a time during the 1920s and early 1930s in the New York neighborhood of Harlem when African American writers from backgrounds across the cultural spectrum and realm of social thought challenged white paternalism and racism. These artists and intellectuals resisted assimilation and asserted their freedom to express themselves on their own terms. They explored their identities as black Americans and celebrated their culture that emerged from slavery as well as their ties to Africa. African-Americans have made contributions and inspired change in the American lifestyle, principally culturally in the areas of literature, art, foods, music, language, sports and technological innovation. By means of inveteration and dissemination of proclivity through pithy poems, short stories and other works, African American writers engendered a change in social rules such as racial integration, individual rights, and values ---America as a nation has come a long way concerning social rules. It used to be that segregated schools, separate bus seats, bathrooms and drinking fountains were not uncommon. There were racial exclusions in employment and businesses as well as real estate and private memberships. The Cotton Club was a famous night club in New York City that operated during Prohibition. The club featured many of the greatest African American entertainers of the time yet generally denied admission to blacks. African American writers such as Zora Neale Hurston described racial discrimination and its impact of her life in her “How It Feels To Be Colored Me” essay: “Someone is always at my elbow reminding me that I am the granddaughter of slaves. It fails to register depression within me…Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It’s beyond me.” Today, there are no separate schools, neighborhoods, or drinking fountains between whites and African Americans. Racial integration can be seen, for example, on TV with commercials including both white people and African Americans. When white people read the works of the Harlem Renaissance, perhaps they felt chagrin for their treatment toward African Americans. ---African American writers in the Harlem Renaissance represented and responded to the ubiquitous racialized violence and racial oppression in the period between the end of Reconstruction and the beginning of World War I. The fought for equality and freedom through their literature and so social standards have improved in their favor. “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). Values addressed in literature of the Harlem Renaissance were not only of equality and freedom, but the various strategies of the writers reflected all genres of human evaluation. For instance, Arna Bontemps wrote a short story titled, “A Summer Tragedy,” about an old couple who planned to commit suicide. The story addressed issues and ideas about aging and death, health and disability, measure of the value of life, family, and love. Langston Hughes wrote the poem, “Mother to Son,” an austere poem about the simple reality that life is not easy, and that one must persevere. “When I read great literature, great drama, speeches or sermons, I feel that the human mind has not achieved anything greater than the ability to share feelings and thoughts through language” (James Earl Jones). African American writers used many approaches and writing styles to convey their messages about values. ---Today, African Americans have many more individual and social rights; those changes were indirectly and fundamentally brought about by their writing during the Harlem Renaissance. Hello, I am a junior in high school, and I was wondering what my chances were of getting into the business school at NYU. Freshman year: 3.2 gpa 1st semester 3.3 gpa 2nd semester Sophomore year: 3.3 gpa first semester 3.45 gpa second semester Junior year: About to be 3.75 or higher after finals (should know by end of week) 1st semester aiming for a 3.85-3.95 gpa for 2nd semester Senior year: Will take easy classes should get a 3.8-4.0 I know I started off a little slow with my gpa, but it has been a steady increase which is not that bad I don't think. I have not gotten any C's or D's, all A's and B's. I have been working since I was 14 (legally), by the time I graduate will have 5 years of working at same place doing variety of jobs. Have 2 good references (I know that you need recommendations for college but do they have to be teachers?). One is a graduate of Yale and is now the manager of a prestigious golf resort. I am involved in a group that teaches freshman about racism. lots of details, but its highly regarded at my school good extracurricular I am part of ski club (don't know if it really matters) I will complete 3 seasons of track by the time I am a senior 1 season of cross country I am in a leadership class for my school we meet every day. I met Shannon on the first day of school in a 9th grade living environment class. From that day on, my perspective of education changed tremendously. Before I met Shannon I was hanging out with the wrong crowd. I was content with being mediocre. I thought that going to class late, hanging out in the hallways, and being disrespectful to my teachers was cool. School was just a popularity contest to me. My grades were horrible and I did not take my education seriously. At that time my standards for myself were low. I was happy as long as I passed with a 65 and stayed under the radar. In retrospect, I had no real role model to look up to. That was until I started to hang out with Shannon. Every semester when report cards were distributed I would ask Shannon if I could see hers. I thought, how does she maintain 90’s and above? Seeing her succeed was the first time I saw a young lady of my age exhibiting maturity and taking control of her life. I was inspired. The difficult part was that after years of not focusing on my school work, I didn’t know where to start. I asked Shannon, how could I improve? She said that all I had to do was apply myself, focus and complete all assignments that were given. Her advice has stuck with me. I started attending all my classes, completing all assignments, and participating more. When I heard my teacher say, “Report cards are going to be distributed 7th period,” my heart dropped. By the time 7th period came, I was so anxious to see my grades. As the teacher handed me my report card I closed my eyes. When I opened it, I read the number “86” for my average. I thought to myself, I finally made the honor roll. “I’m proud of you Suzie,” Shannon said as I showed her my report card. I owe Shannon more than just my academic success. She taught me the value of having a strong role model in my life. Role models are often thought to be someone removed from your daily life, a celebrity, an athlete, or a politician. However in my life I have found that having a strong role model and a mentor, who I could interact with on a daily basis, has been the key to my success. A quote from one of the world’s most remarkable woman inspired me as a child to look at the world as if it was art. Fashion has always been an important icon in my family. Ever since I can remember, getting up every morning just to go to my grandmother’s house was a dream come true. Why you ask? Because to me, she is the Tammy Apostol of my hometown. I remember I was five years old at the time and I dressed up in her high heels, long string of pearls, a “ little black dress “ and an overly large hat, just to be like my grandmother. At that very moment, I knew what I was put on Earth to do. Five years old? You may say there is no possible way, but with having the greatest passion for fashion merchandising as me there is. Back in high school when all of my friends went to the nice beach’s in the South, I was the one who took the long flights over to Europe. After I finished my second year in French, I decided to take a trip with my mother to Paris, France. Little did I know, when she and I went to the Galerie Lafayette to visit the Yves Saint Laurent store, I was tempted to speak to them in French but their English was proficient. I remember we were coming out of the Louvre, and off to the most famous street in Paris, Champs-Elysses, we went. Just seeing the most high end fashion brands you can name on one street was almost breath taking, along with having the most fascinating scenery to go along with it, but it is Paris what else could I expect? Also while I was attending high school, I was always the one everyone went to for fashion advice as to what they should wear the next day. Even for school dances, we always went to a gown shop in Pennsylvania and I was their fashion stylist for the day. Having people look up to me and ask me what looks best on them always touched my heart just because I made a difference in their life. To me, fashion is to my passion as art would be to Giuseppe Pannini. There is never something too plain or too extravagant to show one’s true ideas and expressions. In my mind, that is what I see every time I go to New York City, or to be exact, Bryant Place. Walking into the park is like walking into a new world, with seeing this years latest trends, to the most unique ideas someone could ever see. With that, it has inspired me to put forth my ideas on one’s body. Why I think I should be accepted into FIT is that I know I am able to succeed at what I put my mind to. Actually going to school in New York City and having Manhattan as my campus would be a thrill, and a whole new learning experience. There are so many other fashion schools out there, but none of which are right for me. I love the thrill of the fashion world, and pushing myself to be the best. I know that it all doesn’t come easy, and that I would need to start networks as soon as possible, but that is one thing I do want to strive for. This coming January I will be attending Shepherd University for a background in journalism so that I can have somewhat of a liberal art background. The reason of that is because later on in life I want to be familiar with journalism and fashion merchandising so that I could later start in the newspaper/magazine business. In my family, actually having a career in the fashion merchandising field would never be an option. My mom is a school bus driver, and my dad owns his own car business, and with that, I would be the first in my family to go to college. What are the odds of me getting into UT? Now I am well aware of the difficulty of getting in to UT (UT-Austin, by the way), and the whole "Top 10 percent" deal. I am graduating 2010, and I want to go to UT SO BADLY. I don't want to go into the Nursing School or Business school. I plan on doing Fine arts, either majoring in Photography or Studio Art (like painting or drawing) Would I have a better chance of being accepted because I'm entering something that isn't as competitive to get into? Okay so my weighted GPA is around a 3.85 10-11 and 3.8095 9-11 and unweighted ( as in not counting APS) probably a 3.67 My SAT reasoning is a 2300 780 Critical Reading 800 Math 720 Writing 10 essay My subjects- 640 math 2 740 bio 730 english literature I am in the top 15% of my school. Ummm i have taken ( including this year which is senior year for me) 7 AP's. I have been involved in DECA club for three years, which is a nationally recognized club and am vice president of the club.I have won awards from the club as well. I gave a quote and broke down the quote and wanted to explain how each part of the quote has an impact on my life. “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”- Coco Chanel. Surprising, my life has followed this statement so far and hopefully Fashion Institute of Technology will help to finish it. Growing up in an average, cookie cutter suburban town, I've always been an original, creative, artistic person.. I didn't want to be a copy of what my high school kept producing, the generic replica star athlete that had good grades and made well with everyone that eventually went to a decent colleges and majored in business administration. I was never interested in psychology, biology, nursing and this lead me to not care much about school; I was more interested in music theory, studio art, and world history. My town had little to no resources for right brained people like myself. I wanted to expand my mind to art and design more then I came to FIT. Fashion is the sky, in the streets. I decided to take a pre-college manual pattern-making and sewing class at FIT. I wasn't too adamant of this idea at first. I was used to knowing the ideas and beliefs of people in this town, I thought I wasn't going to be able to adapt to the atmosphere. The class was challenging, but I liked it. I wanted to be challenged more. My affection for fashion design suddenly sparked. I convinced and assured that this was where I belong. I took more classes like sewing, drawing, and design. I acquired a collection of books on fashion design, sewing, art, and painting. I also was tutored in fashion design by Aneta Genova, an accessories design professor at the renowned Parsons School of Design. Taking all those classes and being inspired by people in fashion made me more eager. I came to the realization that I had to do better in school if I wanted to get into the school of my dreams, FIT. My grades improved drastically my junior year and the beginning of senior year. I took harder classes in different subjects because it would give me inspiration and apply them to designing. I took a preparatory class for the Scholastic Aptitude Test and took them twice. Throughout this, I've held down a part time job at Marriott and been apart of the varsity tennis team for 4 years. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live. I also acknowledged that my culture has an extensive role with my life. I am from a Jamaican background and Jamaicans are substantially involved in fashion. Our mentality is basically wanting to look good all the time; the fashion industry has no idea how much money they make from Jamaicans. Even though this may seem catty, trying to out-shine the person next to you makes for creative, original, design ideas, experimenting constantly, knowing what different fabric, shapes, and color works well. Fashion is what's happening. All of these things tie into FIT. FIT won't bore me. FIT will challenge me; will make me strive to outshine. My experiences and trials have brought me on a journey that lead me to comprehend myself; it has prepared me for my future and education in fashion design. FIT is the final piece to my puzzle. SAT: 2120 Math: 740 Reading: 630 (took it again today and will get a better score) Writing: 750 APs: Taken 5 with 3 qualifying scores, taking 2 more this year. I'm ranked 7 of 15 graduating students, but it's a very competitive arts magnet school. It's a new program, so we're the first graduating class. Extracurricular: Key club 2 yrs (charter member) Beta club 3 yrs (charter, treasurer) Writing society 2 yrs (charter, chief editor) Yearbook 1 yr (charter) Spirit week 1 yr All-State Orchestra All-County Orchestra Many orchestra performances (count as volunteer work) Poet Laureate of my school Winner of 3 poetry awards Published in about 5 poetry books Family members at UNC: cousin in med school, cousin in business school, 2 cousins got their undergrad only there, 1 cuz attended but transferred out, 3 aunts/uncles went for undergrad, 1 uncle worked as #2 in admissions for 15 years but not anymore. I will have a good recommendation letter and pretty good essays. It looks like a lot, but compared to other applicants, I'm not so sure. I'm afraid they'll see my D and 2 C's and go "WOW no way!" Hey guys, with senior year coming up I thought I'd make a chance thread to help get me a bit pumped up for my last year in High School! Anways, I go to a very competitive public school in NY. We send tons of kids to Ivies, have over 25 AP classes offered,etc. Very good rep with colleges, to schools like NYU the admit rate hovers around 60%. GPA: 3.75 weighted(92-93).....3.5 UW(89-90)...in all Honors and APs......obviously my weak point . SAT: 660/760/700= 1420/2120 (Contemplating whether or not to take the SAT again to try and get an 800 on math) SAT IIs: US history= 750.....Math II= 760 8 APs APUSH-5 AP Stats-4 AP Calc AB- senior year AP Eng-4 AP Lit-senior year AP Environmental-senior year AP Psych-5 AP US Gov-senior year All the rest are honors level courses...do not have one "regents level"(NYS kids would know) or regular class Also , although it doesnt really matter but I have a NYS Regents master diplomas which means I scored mastery on every state exam throughout high school. I've written one draft of a personal statement I have to submit to UMass Amherst, but when showing it to others, it appears as more of an essay with a philosophical message and not a personal message. I re-read it, and I realized it was devoid of any personal significance, and instead offered simply my reasons for choosing my major. Given that I wish to focus on English/Business in school, I was also wondering how often "I" should be used. I know it has to be personal, so "I" almost seems fitting to use. Hi here is my essay its supposed to be 300 words or more...is it ok or does it need more: Admissions Essay I would like to attend The Art Institute of Dallas to help me evolve from a hobby baker to a pastry chef. I really enjoy baking and decorating cakes in my free time. Most of what I have done is self-taught but I have taken a Wilton Decorating class at my local Michael’s store and that has helped me some. Do I have any (and what are my) chances of getting into Harvard, UPenn Wharton, Johns Hopkins, Brown, NYU, MIT, Duke Yale, Stanford, CalTech, Babson College or Columbia Univ.? I know these are some of the nation's most competitive colleges, but I just want some advice and some knowledge on the position I hold as a "standout" applicant, or a Harvard applicant. Harvard has been my dream college for many years and I want to do as much as possible to increase my chances of admission into it. Also, I am not rich due to my parents being unemployed. So how will that affect me (positively or negatively)? I am currently a High School Junior (about to be a senior in Fall 2009). I am a Indian (Asian male born in US) attending HS in NYC. I know it's kind of late to ask this question now, but I want to pretty much see where I stand now as an applicant. My overall transcript GPA is a 94.50%. I have maintained all A's with the exception of 3 high B's ( AP US History which I am going up in for 2nd term, physical education and art) on my transcript. I just took my SAT's today and think I did pretty good in math (about 750), and I will have to improve my Critical Reading and writing score (a little bit). I took the Math 1 SAT II's and got a 660, and I will be taking 3-6 more in Fall 2009. My interested majors, in preferred order, are Neuroscience, Business/ Entrepreneurship, and Philosophy. I will go with any of these and would definitely love double majors if available. I continued studying at my JHS until 9th grade, and then I graduated from my JHS being the Salutatorian. My strong subjects are math and science, and have done very well on any standardized tests involving them. I have been a part of my school's yearbook committee, and have volunteered for above 100 hours in my school library and for above 700 hours at my local church/ temple. I have also received about 100+ hours from being a part of the ARISTA National Honor Society. I have done hospital rotations with the hospital associated with my school. I was part of a 10 week (once a week) gap year Medical Internship (called HPREP) at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, NY. I have taken a lot of college credit courses at CUNY Queens College and CUNY York College in Psychology, Sociology, Health (4 semester course), and Math Intro. to Probability and Statistics. I am also planning to take philosophy, writing, and maybe drama during the upcoming semesters. I have passed all of the classes I took with A's or B's. I have started working on my essays, and received some of my letters of recommendation (the recommendations are AMAZING!!) I have a 4.0 at both schools and the contract I have signed says that I have guaranteed admissions after completing my second year on the program. After I tried for a few months to get someone at the 4 year university (which I am a student at) to talk to me on how to declare my major, they said I had to reapply to the school and then told me that the college i wanted to get into was too competitive for me... I am by no means the same student i was in High School, and i am pretty sure my grades prove that, for I have worked my butt off!!! But anyways i went ahead and reapplied to a school I AM ALREADY A STUDENT AT, paid the $60 application fee AGAIN, and wrote the 2 essays they said we had to write. I got up this morning to check on my admissions status and it said my application could not be processed because they had not received my transcript from the 4 year university which i am applying too... that is, they have not received the transcript from their own university. I was not aware that I had to send in that transcript since it was apart of their records already. So my question is what do I do now, is there someone I should call to get this straightened out? I have had no luck in the past getting someone to talk to me and it still seems to be that way. I have passed the deadline to turn in all the information they need. I am Luis Fernando Cardenas Blacio, a graduate of one of the best college preparation schools in Ecuador, the American School of Guayaquil. My love and passion to menswear fashion encouraged studying abroad for my Bachelor’s degree in Menswear Design. I chose to attend Fashion Institute of Technology at New York because the major that the institute is offering fits my prospective as a hard worker and it makes me feel comfortable and happy in that aspect of my life. For now, I am attending Broward College in Guayaquil where I am giving my best focusing my future to FIT by doing liberal arts subjects for menswear major and I am directing a small menswear work shop. I didn’t study for a year after my graduation because I focused in my work and dedicate my self to learn in work. My work is to create patterns designed for the demand of clients and sew my new designs by my self in order to get what I want. My father, a great menswear designer from Ecuador, has always been a big influence for me. Since I was 12 he taught me all about menswear fashion. The art of sewing and making patterns made me extremely passionate that I started learn how to sew and to make patterns for men clothe. Unfortunately, my father died when I was 15, I was still at high school. By this time, I had one strong feeling and idea in my mind and my heart, continue with the business. I decided to build a small workshop in the city where we live, Guayaquil. At the beginning I started to make the patterns and studying by my self through books. Then I began to study by myself how to sew them with the people that worked with my father applying good techniques and with a lot of practice I finally established a small work shop. I worked every day with passion and in honor of my father. At the age of sixteen I started the made to measure service of suits and designs for men. I was the only one that knew the technique of tailoring of my father since I was so interested from so young. Now we have three shops that are growing in Guayaquil and are well known. This experience has made me to be independent and mature, and to realize that dreams come with a lot of effort, stress, creativity and failings but it is your love for what you do that will encourage you to continue. What I can offer to FIT is not only my abilities and great fascination for men fashion, what I can really offer is a sample and a message of passion with unconditional love to what God gave me and what I have been developing through experience and constant work. Uc berkeley has been my dream school for Law ever since Freshman year. My first plan was to transfer for grad school, after graduating with majors in Pre-law and business. I've been looking at schools like Cornell college and the university, I've talked to the Cornell college's dean of admissions at a college fair and he made it seem it was almost a sure fire shot of getting in. But, a friend of mine was offered a full ride to the university, and said it was an amazing campus although it is, an ivy league school so, its gonna be harder to get into, but i feel that if i get into the university switching to UC berkeley will become easier. Here's my info: Currently I'm a Junior, so for an average gpa throughout high school i have probablly somewhere between a 3.8 or 3.9 not weighed. Jr. year im taking Honors English 11 (cant take ap english till senior year) Pre-calc (farthest i can be jr year) Ap Bio Ap History Bible 11 Choir Ind. At the young age of 14 I choose to drift away from the life my father lead and started my own legacy. I was just five years old when my parents divorced, and fortunately my mother received full custody of my siblings and I. My father was allowed to visit us only with my mother's written permission. It was when my parents divorced that I learned the true life that my father leads. My father is an avid liar, an excessive drinker and gambler, he even framed his own father just to save himself from imprisonment. Sadly I looked up to the examples he gave me and I somewhat I followed his footsteps by purposely failing school and disrespecting my elders. It wasn't until my first day of High School in this great state of Colorado that I finally realized the great truths of success. I got an 1870/ 2400. Cr-600 Math 570 Writing 700 Essay 12. I'm planning on studying this summer for it again and hopefully get a better score in October of my senior year. On the ACT I recieved a 26. I was impressed with George Mason University. They have a nice Basketball team, a big campus, at a very nice location in Fairfax. I personally think and thought that George Mason seemed like the best University in the area, with a reasonable tuition, unlike Marymount and some other Universities in the Area. I have been living in the Virginia , so I have heard a lot about George Mason University. I have lots of friends that are currently attending the University, George Mason is well known, and with the success their basketball team had a few years ago, it became a well known University in America, and around the world today. I talked to my friends at GMU and they all had positive remarks, with nothing negative to say about the University. When I entered the campus, my first impression was like WOW. it’s a huge campus, with lots of parking spaces. That was something we all liked because it’s a torture to find a parking space at some universities, so I thought that was a big plus. There is a big pond with ducks, that seemed like a like a meditation place, I liked that about the college. I think that It would be really peacefull to walk around the pond on my free time. One other plus was that its close to my house, so I will not have to get a dormitory, I can just drive to school. The Admissions representative that I spoke with was very helpful. She gave me a list of classes that I have to take to complete my major, she gave me info about he University and her business card, and told me to contact her when ever I needed information. The classes seem very nice. I walked around the campus and noticed that professors actually get involved with the students, and try to really teach the material, rather than just get paid. I have noticed professors giving individual attention to the students. I think that after seeing all the positives about GMU, and after my friends positive comments. High schools are becoming more academically rigorous because students are realizing that education is the most valuable asset they can have. I attend Montgomery high school, one of New Jersey's top public secondary schools. Since I was surrounded by overachieving students, it was hard keeping up with them in class. So I pushed myself everyday to emulate their study habits and their passion for learning.Before the 9th grade, I honestly had no intention of attending college. But after realizing my potential, in and out of the classroom, I decided that I would attend college and pursue a degree in business. The main reason why my grades are not as high as I wanted them to be is because I took more classes than the average student per year. I moved to china at the beginning of 8th grade and came back to New Jersey two years later. My school in china kept no record of me because I am a foreigner. MHS would not admit me as a junior since I had no official transcript. So I was moved to the 9th grade. From freshman year till now, I had to take summer classes and extra classes instead of lunch in order to graduate faster. But please do not sympathize for me because I learned a valuable lesson during these times; A combination of competition and education can do wonders.I am determined to excel in college and in the business world. In every class, students are competing for grades and in some cases, teachers deflate exam grades in order to maintain a 75 class average; It's like survival of the fittest of the fittest in Montgomery. Competition in the classroom shaped me into a more diligent and worldly student. Although I am not in the top 10% of my class nor do I have a 3.5 GPA, I am proud of my 3.0 because I had to earn it in the midst of other driven students. The biggest reason why my grades are not as high as I wanted them to be is because I took more classes than the average student. If you take a look at my transcript, I had no lunch periods during my junior and senior year. I wanted take more classes in order to graduate faster (because I was 2 years older than my classmates), which unfortunately resulted in a lower overall GPA.I feel that I am ready, despite my GPA, for an academic challenge that I can get at IUB's Kelley School of Business.
