Amazon on Wednesday rolled out new features to its Mechanical Turk web service designed to expand its appeal to a broader set of businesses. Mechanical Turk is a work marketplace that can be used to outsource software development.
The company said its latest Web interface guides business through designing so called "human intelligence tasks," which is really just a shout out that you need some work done. The new Web tools also allow businesses to track work, get deliverables and monitor activity.
According to Amazon (statement) the Mechanical Turk process before was clunky because tasks couldn't be aggregated and retrieved in groups.

Open Question: business certificates?
I have an Associates Degree in Business and 5 years experience as a Supervisor. I would like to move up into a Manager position so I am wondering if it would be better to go back to school and get my Bachelors Degree or would it be better to get certificates such as Project Management, Leadership, etc... PS my company doesn't require a Bachelor Degree for Manager but I am sure it is a added bonus. moreOpen Question: Where can i get a International Business management scholarship?

Would it be recognized by US employers? help!?
The facts: Im currently a Junior at a California State University. Major: Business Management 3 Semesters more till I graduate (including the 1 im currently taking) Proposal: Im part of my school's business program, which is offering the opportunity to study abroad (to France) and receive a 2nd Bachelors degree. How it works: You would have to study 2 semesters abroad (approx. 10 months, and by the end of the term, you would receive a bachelors degree from that University. I get to pay cal state tuition, and only cover for personal expenses and housing which is heavily subsidized by the French Government. After the 10 months are over, I would come back to California, finish off my other degree (2 semesters more to go) and possibly con-validate some of the courses, so I dont lag behind a whole year. I would then graduate here in California also, receiving my 2nd degree. I would probably study marketing or operations in ICN, and finish off management here in California. French University: ICN Business School (Nancy, France) EQUIS accredited Member of Grandes Ecoles Member of AACSB & EFMD My question was if It was worth going there. Thankfully my parents support me. The only concern for me is to go and besides the cultural enrichment, having to waste 1 year (10 months) if a degree from the ICN Business School is not recognized in the United Sates. Would recruiters/employers here in the US, even care? Do they only focus on national schools? I hear people say, some recruiters/employers see it as a plus, some recruiters/employers dont even care. What do you think? Thanks! ( any comments/answers are greatly appreciated) moreOpen Question: SKEMA in Nice or EM Lyon?
Hello everybody, I really need an advice!!! I got accepted to 2 very prestigious French business schools. One is EM in Lyon and the other SKEMA in Nice. I can't choose among this 2. I am going to study management and then marketing as speciality. Both schools have that major. The thing is - EM Lyon is Nr. 6 school in the whole Europe. It is a really top school and they take one out of 7 candidates and it is really an honor to get accepted there. The school in Nice is like in top 20s or 30s, but Nice and Cotes d Azures seems to be really fun. U know beach see sun 365 days a week. I know you would say that I go there to study and not party, but admit it is a big temptation to have a chance to study in place like a real heaven. The point is - I am a really serious person and for me it is very important to know about the chances to get a good job after studying etc, What I want to ask - if some of you have already studied in a French Business school (particularly in one of these) - is there really a big difference in the quality of education among these 2 business schools??? moreResolved Question: How do I deal with this?
Okay, My mom has always been dependent on other people and her boyfriend is a complete control freak, soon I will be eighteen and able to move out and I think I should. For a whole week she cried to me and asked for my advice in a "friend" way when her boyfriend wanted to kick us out. Then he told her she could stay if she started cracking down on HER kids and possibly made me move in with my 70 something great grandmother. Now she is only flipping out on me and being hard on me for basically no reason. She demeans me and tells me I have no goals in life when this week I'm getting my permit and applying for a job and plan to go to school for business management. I've never rebelled, never partied, I don't do drugs. I think I've been a damn good kid compared to the rest of teens these days. I just don't know what to do. When she wants something she acts real nice to me and talks to me like we are friends and as soon as I tell her I couldn't get what she asked for freaks out and treats me like complete crap. All my life I've watched her kids and gave her money when she needed it and I get nothing but horrible treatment in return. I try talking to her but she just manipulates the situation and somehow twists it to be my fault and freaks out, when it's definately not. Idk if you can help offer some input that'd be great. moreOpen Question: Should I take Banking and Money management as one of my classes? (It's 2 periods long)?
(I know I kind of put this in a weird category) I'm 16 and going to be a senior this upcoming school year. I signed up for one of my classes as Banking and Money management for I want to go into a career in business. Now I keep having doubts about taking this class. I'm just really scared that I'm not gonna like it or its going to be to hard and I'm going to fail. I don't want it to end up being a boring class and I don't think I know anyone else who signed up for this class ( which will be 2 periods). I feel like I will be making a mistake on one hand because I feel that I will fail but on the other hand I could really benefit from this class and it might help me on the right life and career path, but I'm just so unsure about my abilities. What should I do? Any advice? Thank you. -Jennifer moreOpen Question: Is business management a good major in college?

I'm looking into going back to school, and I would like my MBA. I've narrowed the areas of concentrations I'm interested in to the following three: 1. Human Resource and Organizational Management; 2. Marketing; and 3. International Business. Any suggestions on programs and universities that are strong in those concentrations? moreOpen Question: Is this path a reality or shall I rethink now?
Ok I'm from the UK and basically I've nearly got my GCSE qualifications (I'm in year 11), I'm predicted: Maths - C English lang/lit - C Applied Science - C Core Science - C Business studies - C Electronics - B History - D Resistant Materials - C I.T - C/C (OCR Qualification, my school doesn't do GCSE for I.T). I've applied for Sixth form and have chosen the following subjects Law Business Studies English Language History half way through, I'm probably going to drop History (so I get half of the A-level and more time to concentrate on the others). Lets say I get all C's (worst case scenario, im going to put my head down in sixth form and reach for the B's), thats 280 UCAS Points, I've seen a local university which offers a Law LLB hons degree and the minimum entry requirement is 200 Ucas points minimum and 300 recommended and there is no specific A-level requirement, ok so I can get anywhere from 280-420 points (All C's to all A's) is this the right path to take? Have I worked out anything wrong? I want to become a solicitor and, well possibly work my way up to a barister (depends how I am feeling at the time, at the moment thats a dream LOL alot of hard work). and how does the LLB Hons law degree work? after graduation will I need to go into training or anything to become a solicitor? thanks. Degree info - http://www.bradford.ac.uk/management/programmes/undergraduate/uglaw/ataglance/ops, for the OCR ICT I mean't a Pass, I was thinking of BTEC's then... I'm not doing any of those haha.History, well I've got A/B's on the coursework, the mock exams maybe not so well, D's, but my real exam is about 40 days away and I'm revising like hell, need some more knowledge up there and I hope I'll do fine, mainly sourcework questions I end up explaining the source instead of the message, i'm working on bringing that up to a C or better at the moment. College, well I'm planning to do Sixth form at school then to maybe bradford university or leeds university (they have a law school there). I know law isnt nessesary at A-level I just thought it'd help, never the less I will think about your advice. thanks for the post. moreResolved Question: Can I get into at least one of these colleges?

We recently moved and now my travel time is over 30 minutes both to and from my job. I hate driving! Not to mention since moving I have had babysitter issues (getting my girls both to and from school) to the extent that I have had to change my hours at work temporary until I figure something else out. I am really starting to hate my job too. That's why I am somewhat interested in finding something to do at home so I can finally finish my degree in Business Management. I would like to find some type of possible part time work that I could do to supplement my income. I DO NOT WANT TO DO CHILD CARE FULL TIME!! I love kids to death but my nerves just aren't made to handle that all day!! Sorry!! I need to find something that would pay my current expenses (that I now pay - my boyfriend will take care of the rest) - looking to make a minimum of $600 monthly. I used to have a cleaning business a long time ago and thought of doing that again but would only consider residential and I don't think there is enough steady work for something like that. I am not sure what to do. I am unhappy at work and it's been nothing but a hassle finding reliable childcare. I would like to figure out something to where I don't have to worry about my children being safe, as well as finding my own happiness. Any unique opportune ideas? P.S. I have a bit of a dilemma I am not sure what to do. I applied for two jobs through a company, a huge national well services company. Well at a local branch they had 2 openings one for an HR generalist and one for a Dispatcher. I applied for both. I applied for the dispatcher before the HR Generalist. I am currently getting a Master's Cert in from Villanova (I already have a Bachelors in industrial sociology) and now working on the HR management from Villanova, will be done in a couple months. This is the bottom of the totem pole HR job within their company. It even says on their website. The other job is a Dispatcher, you basically schedule trucks coming in and out of the branch. <Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work Katherine Streeter By MICKEY MEECE Published: May 9, 2009 YELLING, scheming and sabotaging: all are tell-tale signs that a bully is at work, laying traps for employees at every pass. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Kent Kaufman and Laura Stek, right, of the Growth and Leadership Center, coach Cleo Lepori-Costello, left, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, on communication skills. During this downturn, as stress levels rise, workplace researchers say, bullies are likely to sharpen their elbows and ratchet up their attacks. Its probably no surprise that most of these bullies are men, as a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group, makes clear. But a good 40 percent of bullies are women. And at least the male bullies take an egalitarian approach, mowing down men and women pretty much in equal measure. The women appear to prefer their own kind, choosing other women as targets more than 70 percent of the time. In the name of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, what is going on here? Just the mention of women treating other women badly on the job seemingly shakes the womens movement to its core. It is what Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif., has called the pink elephant in the room. How can women break through the glass ceiling if they are ducking verbal blows from other women in cubicles, hallways and conference rooms? Women dont like to talk about it because it is so antithetical to the way that we are supposed to behave to other women, Ms. Klaus said. We are supposed to be the nurturers and the supporters. Ask women about run-ins with other women at work and some will point out that people of both sexes can misbehave. Others will nod in instant recognition and recount examples of how women more so than men have mistreated them. Ive been sabotaged so many times in the workplace by other women, I finally left the corporate world and started my own business, said Roxy Westphal, who runs the promotional products company Roxy Ventures Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She still recalls the sting of an interview she had with a woman 30 years ago that turned into a one-person firing squad and led her to leave the building in tears. Jean Kondek, who recently retired after a 30-year career in advertising, recalled her anger when an administrator in a small agency called a meeting to dress her down in front of co-workers for not following agency procedure in a client emergency. But Ms. Kondek said she had the last word. I said, Would everyone please leave? She added, and then I told her, This is not how you handle that. Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers. A private accountant in California said she recently joined a company and was immediately frozen out by two women working there. One even pushed her in the cafeteria during an argument, the accountant said. Its as if were back in high school, she said. A senior executive said she had finally broken the glass ceiling only to have another woman gun for her job by telling management, I cant work for her, shes passive-aggressive. The strategy worked: The executive said she soon lost the job to her accuser. ONE reason women choose other women as targets is probably some idea that they can find a less confrontative person or someone less likely to respond to aggression with aggression, said Gary Namie, research director for the Workplace Bullying Institute, which ordered the study in 2007. But another dynamic may be at work. After five decades of striving for equality, women make up more than 50 percent of management, professional and related occupations, says Catalyst, the nonprofit research group. And yet, its 2008 census found, only 15.7 percent of Fortune 500 officers and 15.2 percent of directors were women. Leadership specialists wonder, are women being overly aggressive because there are too few opportunities for advancement? Or is it stereotyping and women are only perceived as being overly aggressive? Is there a double standard at work? Research on gender stereotyping from Catalyst suggests that no matter how women choose to lead, they are perceived as never just right. Whats more, the group found, women must work twice as hard as men to achieve the same level of recognition and prove they can lead. If women business leaders act consistent with gender stereotypes, they are considered too soft, the group found in a 2007 study. If they go against gender stereotypes, they are considered too tough. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image David Kadlubowski for The New York Times Michelle Cirocco, left, and Donna Kent of Televerde, a company in Phoenixthat set up call centers at a state prison. Women are trying to figure out the magical keys to the kingdom, said Laura Steck, president of the Growth and Leadership Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and an executive leadership coach. Women feel they have to be aggressive to be promoted, she said, and then they keep it up. Then, suddenly, they see the need to be collegial and collaborative instead of competitive. Cleo Lepori-Costello, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, came to the center for training. She got off to a bumpy start when she stormed into her new role like a bull in a china shop, Ms. Steck said. In gathering feedback about Ms. Lepori-Costello, Ms. Steck heard comments like: Cleo is good at getting things done but may have come on too strong in the beginning. She didnt read the different cultural unspoken rules like she could have. So Ms. Steck and Kent Kaufman, another coach at the center, began a one-year, once-a-weekindividual coaching program. It included role-playing and monthly group discussions with other female executives who acknowledged that they also had major blind spots about being politic at work. (The group was once nicknamed the Bully Broads.) When she came to the center, Ms. Lepori-Costello said, she thought her colleagues were not initially open to her ideas. Through coaching and conflict role-playing, she came to realize that her behavior was perhaps too much overkill and that she was not always attending to all the people around her. Joel H. Neuman, a researcher at the State University of New York at New Paltz, says most aggressive behavior at work is influenced by a number of factors associated with the bullies, victims and the situations in which they work. This would include issues related to frustration, personality traits, perceptions of unfair treatment, and an assortment of stresses and strains associated with todays leaner and meaner work settings,, he said. Mr. Neuman and his colleague Loraleigh Keashly of Wayne State University have developed a questionnaire to identify the full range of behaviors that can constitute bullying, which could help companies uncover problems that largely go unreported. Bullying involves verbal or psychological forms of aggressive (hostile) behavior that persists for six months or longer. Their 29 questions include: Over the last 12 months, have you regularly: been glared at in a hostile manner, been given the silent treatment, been treated in a rude or disrespectful manner, or had others fail to deny false rumors about you? The Workplace Bullying Institute says that 37 percent of workers have been bullied. Yet many employers ignore the problem, which hits the bottom line in turnover, health care and productivity costs, the institute says. Litigation is rare, the institute says, because there is no directly applicable law to cite and the costs are high. Two Canadianresearchers recently set out to examine the bullying that pits women against women. They found that some women may sabotage one another because they feel that helping their female co-workers could jeopardize their own careers. One of the researchers, Grace Lau, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Waterloo, said the goal was to encourage women to help one another. She said: How? One way we predicted would be to remind women that they are members of the same group. We believe that a sense of pride in womens accomplishments is important in getting women to help one another, Ms. Lau said. To have this sense of pride, women need to be aware of their shared identity as women. In the workplace, however, it is unlikely that women will constantly think of themselves as members of one group, she said. They will more likely see themselves as individuals, as they are judged by their performance. As a result, women may not feel a need to help one another,, she said. They may even feel that in order to get ahead, they need to bully their co-workers by withholding information like promotion opportunities, and that women are easier to bully than men because women are supposedly less tough than men. Skip to next paragraph WHAT better place to be a bully than in a prison? Even so, that is exactly where Televerde, a company in Phoenix that specializes in generating sales leads and market insight for high-tech companies, set up shop. About 13 years ago, the company created four call centers in the Arizona state prison in Perryville, employing 250 inmates (out of 3,000). Through immersion training, mentoring and working with real-world clients, these women can overcome their difficult circumstances, said Donna Kent, senior vice president at Televerde. Often, they will win over bullies and we see the whole thing transform. Thats what gives us inspiration and our clients inspiration. TODAY, about half of Televerdescorporate office is made up of graduates from Perryville, including Michelle Cirocco, the director of sales operations. She has seen how women treat one another in other settings and she thinks the root cause is that women are taught to fight with one another for attention at an early age. Were competing with our sisters for dads attention, or for our brothers attention, Ms. Cirocco said. And then we go on in school and were competing for our teachers attention. Were competing to be on the sports team or the cheer squad. To be sure, the Televerde experience is not for every inmate, and those who are in it still must work hard to maintain a highly competitive position. As we get into the corporate world, Ms. Cirocco added, were taught or were led to believe that we dont get ahead because of men. But, we really dont get ahead because of ourselves. Instead of building each other up and showcasing each other, were constantly tearing each other down.Televerde reversed that attitude in Perryville, Ms. Cirocco said, by encouraging women to work for a common cause, much like the environment envisioned by the Canadian researchers. It becomes a very nurturing environment, Ms. Cirocco said. You have all these women who become your friends, and you are personally invested in their success. Everyone wants everyone to get out, to go on to have a good healthy life. If the level of support found at Televerde were found elsewhere, Ms. Klaus said, it would solve a lot of problems. The time has come, she said, for us to really deal with this relationship that women have to women, because it truly is preventing us from being as successful in the workplace as we want to be and should be. Weve got enough obstacles; we dont need to pile on any more. >To gameface, Thanks. Okay, so Im interested in joining the US Navy and I was wondering if some of the answers to the questions I asked my recruiter were accurately rendered. So to all you people who are currently enlisted in the navy or have been I'd appreciate what your experience has shown you to be true concerning the matters I'm about to cover. Based on my personal characteristics and goals, do you believe joining the navy would be in my best interest? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. So to start, here is a little background on me. I am 23 years old trying to get my bachelors degree in business administration, more specifically a focus in entreprenuership or small business management. I have about 2.5 years left before I graduate and I wish to complete my bachelors degree debt free, taking 15 credit hours per semester untill I finish and then hopeful move on to an MBA program. Now, from what my recruiter tells me, the most amount of time I would expect to be out to sea is about 6 months - during my entire 4 year naval career - depending on what job I qualify for. What concerns me is whether or not I will have the time to complete a degree in the time I am with the navy. Since, from what I understand, when on shore I will be working 8 hour days, when off shore, fitting in school once traveling can be difficult to do. How accurate is my understanding of the dailey time committment? In otherwords will I be out to sea on only one rotation, or can the navy basically ship me out whenever they want and where ever they want, for how ever long they want without a moments notice? I personally dont want to take all of my classes online and wish to take my core classes at an accredited land based university that I would be required to physically attend... Plus I dont want to exit the navy after my four year term with no college degree because I was out to sea most of the time... My recruiter explained it to me as I would be be working mostly 9am-5pm, monday-friday leaving my evenings open for school and weekends... Also would I only be expected to actively serve 4 years, of an 8 year contract. How true is what he explained to me? As I mentioned earlier, finishing my degree is of most importance to me. I like the fact that I wouldn't have to worry about the financial aspects of school while in the navy, but I want to be sure I wont have a hard time of prioritizing my degree because of factors outside my own control, like being shipped off to bumb fucking egypt for 12 months, or having to work crazy hours and so forth. Keep in mind if I stayed in the civilian sector taking 15 credit hours per semester I could have a degree in 2.5 years, but most likely with debt :(. So what should I do? Join or not? Will I be able to complete a degree and be fully fuctional in my roll with the navy? Thanks! moreVoting Question: Could I get into any of these colleges?

Money is not a problem either, I am of Indian ethnicity (M). Top 35% of Class I know my GPA is low but weighted by normal high school standards it would be like a 3.4 or 3.5 maybe? Also would getting up to a 27 or 28 on the ACT improve my chances by a lot? Hi! So I live and work in California, though our retail store (a large chain) is based in Arizona. I'm the lowest manager on the totem pole, I'm cool, with it cuz this is just my job while going through school! I bring this up because while I am in management, my power is severlly limited, and I'm not exactlly privy to every detail of business. Anyway, we're cutting back on hours, just like every one else I imagine. The thing is, the two head managers (store manager and operations manager) have been pulling aside many full time employees and basically giving them an ultimatum, "either give us completlly open availability, or we're bumping you down to part time." Many people have families or school or even seond jobs, so there are days and hours they can and can't work. So most are being shoved down to part time, we're talking going from 36-45 hours down to 20 or below. Hell of a drop, and many are no longer eligible for the company insurance for full time employees. I really don't think this is really legal. We asked an HR woman who came to the store for an unrelated matter, and she said it was on the up and up. But she was very stilted and somewhat rude about it. She's also based in Arizona, and I'm unsure of their laws as I know they can differ from state to state. But being in California, they would have to abide by this states law, not just the main bases states laws, right? Another manager mentioned something about a state labor board, I think that was it. Is this were these complaints would go? As a manager, my hours have not been affected, so I'm not sure if I can even make a complaint? Is this legal? Should I complain? Or at the very least pass the info on to those who have been wronged? Help!Yeah, I guess it's better than firing them, and I know that the can cut hours. But I didn;t think they could force you from full to part time, I thought that basically was the contract, that hired as full time, they need to provide such and such amount of hours. moreVoting Question: How do i become a buyer in the beauty industry?
