Cadence Q2 profit down nearly 92% Silicon Valley / San Jose

Cadence Design Systems Inc. on Wednesday reported second quarter net income of $5 million, or 2 cents a share, compared to $60 million, or 20 cents a share in the same period last year.

Milpitas-based Cadence (NASDAQ:CDNS) had $329 million of revenue in the quarter, compared to the year-ago quarter's $391 million.

Excluding items, the company's income in the second quarter was $38 million, or 14 cents a share, compared to $91 million, or 3 cents a share in the same period last year.

"Although we achieved our Q2 numbers, it was more difficult than we planned. Customers are demanding still more flexibility in when, what and how they purchase software and hardware," said CEO Mike Fister.

For the third quarter, the company expects total revenue in the range of $235 million to $245 million, with a loss of 25 cents to 27 cents a share. more

Harley-Davidson profits down 23 percent The Business Journal of

Harley-Davidson Inc. reported a 23 percent decrease in second-quarter profits Thursday because of an expected decline in demand for motorcycles.

The Milwaukee-based heavyweight motorcycle manufacturer said it shipped more motorcycles than expected, but those unit sales were still lower than last year.

For the three months ended June 30, net income declined to $222.8 million, or 95 cents per share, compared with $290.5 million, or $1.15 per share, for the same period a year ago. Net revenue declined 2.9 percent to $1.57 billion from $1.62 billion.

The 80,326 Harley-Davidson motorcycles shipped for the quarter topped the firm's projection of 76,000 to 80,000 units. The total was still nearly 16 percent lower than last year's shipping total. The company lowered its targets because of the weak U.S. more

Nothing sums up the chaos that has surrounded Sports Direct's short life as a public company more than the almost complete lack of information about Dave Forsey, its chief executive.

Asked about his age, the company's PR agency replied: "Believed to be 43." The straight man to Mike Ashley's music hall routine is one of five directors who pocketed £5 million when Sports Direct last year launched the most controversial flotation in recent City history. He is one of the tight coterie of directors surrounding Mr Ashley. A rival executive says: "Dave has been with Mike since he was a baby."

Mr Ashley continually ribs the diminutive executive over his height, or rather, lack of it but trusts him implicitly. While the billionaire spends time on the company's brands, Mr Forsey is charged with running the group's Shirebrook warehouse and its 400-odd stores, whose pile-it-high, sell-it-cheap philosophy has drawn constant criticism from Adidas and Nike. more

i am getting my bachelor's degree in psychology and hope to go into the business world. i have read online that liberal arts majors aren't a disadvantage, and that actually many employers prefer them, as they have better problem solving and writing skills. i am trying really hard to decide if i should immediately go to grad school instead of immediately looking for a job. i know that if i don't go now, i probably won't ever (my parents would pay if i go now), but i am just sooooo burned out on school and don't know if i could handle another 2 years. honestly, how much more employable would having a MBA make me? would it be worth it, really?what can i do to make myself more marketable if i do not go to grad school? i am good with computers and my resume is very well padded, but i do not have much work experience, nor have i had an internship, because the psychology department hasn't exactly helped me with that. more

I have a masters degree in psychology, graduated 2007 cum laude. I have been trying to get a job for the past 2 years without any luck. All i do now is personal training...so...i have no practical business experience. I want to work for the government but it seems like that is almost impossible. Maybe if i had military experience, but i have a titanium rod in my leg, which disqualifies me. I am getting so fking pissed off because ive applied to hundreds, thousands even, of jobs online with NO success. I have even had great interviews here and there. But the same kinda crap happens to me: i get a disappointing letter saying, OH SORRY, we are going with someone else more qualified. I am actually considering lying on my resume because nobody wants to hire entry level candidates, especially in this horrible econmoy, despite it is on "the rebound"., ..riiight. what a bunch of BS. However, enterprise and creativity alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Though, venturing off into Entrepreneurship is a challenge, one which I think some formal education can help solidify and provide a stronger foundation for success. If these were your only choices, considering my background listings, Bachelors of Science: Psychology Criminal Justice Business Accounting Marketing Management Information Systems Education Multidisciplinary Studies (different subjects of this, plus a few others that are offered but not as a major). These are all online, so education is not accredited in any state but that state (i don't live in that state). Also I'm not good at math. Which one would be most likely to get better "marks" at jobs? I have a B.S. in Psychology and needless to say I am very unsatisfied with my earnings (I graduated 4 years ago). I am a single mom with two kids so I have to work full-time. My passion is health care, but all the health programs I can find require day-time classes and internships, which are impossible for me. I'm looking for a Masters degree I can complete online, but it needs to be worth the money. I want my salary to be at least $50-60K starting. I have been looking at MBA and Computer Science programs since they seem to be lucrative and are offered online, but I have no background in business or no interest in computers. Resolved Question: Spiritually Speaking -- what should I study going back to college?

In 1994, I left college, but was still allowed to go through graduation ceremonies, some hours short of completion. Now that I see it, I have basically 30 hours or a full year of undergrad left. I really wrangled my way into the line for grad. Naturally I never got a diploma for my empty folder. But, my whole family thought I had graduated. I have worked as a freelance writer, holding myself out as having a degree in English. I got 2 books published 4 and 8 years ago, I have published articles, blogs and business and grant proposals. I have done mission trips and ministry work with my writing, and am up for a major journalism fellowship (I did not pretend to have a degree on that application). Lately, I have felt very guilty about pretending to have a degree when I don't. Due to serious illness in our family, the construction and publishing markets (my husband's and my work) and a variety of other factors I'm not going to detail here, our family is on welfare right now. As a bit of background, I have not been offered a full time job in five years in spite of my best efforts. I get part time jobs easily and freelance writing jobs easily -- they just don't pay enough for us to pay our bills. My husband (who remodels houses but doesn't charge near enough to support us) and I have to cooperate with the job placement plan in order to keep getting welfare. It's not that the few hundred dollars is such a big deal, but under the program, and since I don't have outstanding student loans, I can go back to school and finish my degree with distance learning through a university about 40 miles from here. I can take online classes or some classes at a center in my town. It will actually take about 2 years because I have to earn 45 hours at this new school to graduate from it. This program offers adult learners courses at the upper undergrad levels and counts whatever coursework you've done to meet the core education requirements. You have to have completed 60 hours to get in and I've completed 98. Here are possible majors available to me: 1. English. Pro: it was already my major and I have a lot of work done in it. Con: I don't see how it will get me farther than I am now. I'm already a published author and journalist and not making enough money at it. I can already get hired for writing jobs based on my talent -- not to brag, it's just a fact. 2. Psychology -- Pro: I like people and helping others. Con: I have absolutely no hours in psychology right now and would have to start with Psych 101. Like all of these, I have the educational core done, but would have to take a bunch of psych and other social science courses. 3. Business administration. I do have nonprofit experience but my lack of degree has kept me from ever getting a job with it. I have no interest in business courses, I'm bad at math, possibly too chaotic for accounting, but I would make more money I think. 4. Teaching certification -- I would go for secondary English. Pro: very easy for me to finish up and possibly steady work that I'd enjoy. Con: Our local school district cut a bunch of teachers this year and I don't want to uproot the kids. I quit the teaching unit when I was at uni before because I didn't think I would be the best teacher. 5. organizational management -- like bus admin but less accounting and other drudgery. Might help me grow my writing business or get a job with a cool organization. What's your advice? Hope it wasn't too long. I tried to break it up into a lot of paragraphs. Thanks! more

I don't have any other choice but to complete my schooling online. I've done alot of research into the "typical" online schools like University of Phoenix, Kaplan, Art Institutes, Ellis, Ashford, AIU, Argosy, etc etc etc. And I've heard far more bad than good about them and it being unlikely for a future employer to take a degree obtained there seriously. I was wondering, if there are any "brick and mortar" actual college/universities that are highly reputable but offer their degree programs online? I know Northwestern Business College and University of Massachusetts does but they don't offer the program I am interested in - Psychology. Any help would be very much appriciated! more

Hi all! I just turned 29 years old and I really would like to earn my MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree. I could go back to my former college, beautiful Frostburg State University (FSU, here in Maryland), which is where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, and get my MBA in two years time there. However, I'm now at an age to where moving back into an on-campus dorm doesn't really appeal to me anymore. Living at school for college/grad. school is really designed for 18 - 24 years old. I lived in a dorm from 26 - 28 years old and I had a great time, made lots of friends and all. I really love to socialize and partying with people (especially with younger single girls-hahaha), but I just think I'd feel very awkward living in a dorm from 29 - 31 years old the next time around. However, I could also enroll in the University of Phoenix's (UOP) MBA program. I just don't want people to think that I got my MBA degree "online" because I don't ever want to do that. As it turns out, they offer both online and traditional in-the-classroom courses, which I think is very cool. The class requirements to graduate are also very similar to FSU's MBA program. If I go the UOP route, I can work full-time and make some good money, live at home, pay for no housing costs, pay for no campus meal plan, and I could also work too. I really wanted to go back to FSU to get my MBA but, given my current circumstances, I think the UOP route would be the best way for me to go. If I was 22 years again, I'd go back to FSU for my MBA in a heartbeat. I'm single, never been married, and I don't have any kids. With all this information, what do you think I should do about getting my MBA degree in grad. school? I really have no one to talk to about this for advice. Any responses would be appreciated. I'm currently enrolled in the business accounting program at my college. I'm having second thoughts to switch to a psychology degree and i have 3 days to get my refund. Truth be told, i'm actually taking distant online education because of my mental illness. I want to make a career change to clinical psychology, but I did not take psychology in college. What would be my options, or what would I have to do to attain a BA in psych, so that I may then enroll into a graduate program. I would like to get started ASAP. I also have a 9 to 5 job... would an online BA degree hinder my chances in being accepted to a reputable psych grad program?Doc, 1) I graduated in 2004 +have been working for the past 3.5 yrs. 2) I plan to give up my day job for school, apply for school loans, + bartend on the side. 3) In my research in determining the branch of psychology that I am interested in I see that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a natural interest of mine, rather than clinical. Im not awed by Dr. Phil at all, but I do like Dr. Joy Brown on wor710AM. My interest is really a natural curiousity that I never persued in college b/c my father told me it had the highest depression rate & I would have an issue w/ attachment. I do not have a disorder and the only therapy was when i was 6 for my parents divorce - 3 times, i prefered to talk to my dad . I try to be as self-aware as I can be + am sound of mind besides emotional female moments. I appreciate your bluntness + your concern for 'how im going about this' I only thought of online school for BA, not to limit my studies, but to cover the basics as im behind in the game.If online school would prevent me from getting the best grad edu I can afford I would then decide against it. I definitely realize the implications of this profession, and have read ppl’s neg. opinion on this field due to bad experiences they’ve had w/ their own therapy. I think + feel that I would be able to truly help those who want to be helped w/ proper edu + experience. I find myself drawn to these situations more and more in my life, and am stimulated more as I come across new (to me) ways of looking at things, how the mind/emotions works for diff. ppl. Certain life experiences have taught me a lot about ppl and myself, and there is much more to learn.. + it has helped me to grow as a person. Currently reading ‘The Female Brain’ by Louann Brizendine, M.D., im hooked by this stuff. Would I be able to just take the psych courses for my BA, as I already took the core courses? Thank you Doc!
