Alternative Business Systems acquired The Business Review (Albany)

Upstate Office Equipment absorbed Alternative Business Systems's two employees and 600 customers, ranging from small businesses to the New York State Senate.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed by Upstate Office Equipment President Ed Potrzeba, Jr.

Hasler manufactures postage meters, high-speed letter openers, document folder inserters and mail accounting systems.

Upstate Office services more than 5,400 businesses in central New York. The company was founded in 1977 and employs 30 people.

The purchase of Alternative Business Systems gives Upstate Office a foothold in the Albany region as it pursues another local postage equipment franchise.

Steve Cribben ran Alternative Business Systems for about 17 years, Potrzeba said. more

Poor planning cited in prom cancellation

Students, parents and security hired for the Dante Club event said insufficient supervision was on hand to monitor more than 200 teens in attendance.

"There wasn't enough security," said Grade 12 student Rob Scott. "Kids were walking in with half bottles of beer. One kid brought in a duffel bag full of beer."

Others downed rum shots in the boy's bathroom before the event was shut down just before 9 p.m. he said.

"I don't understand why they couldn't just grab the few who were causing problems and throw them out," added Scott, who estimates he and his date each spent more than $300 for their big night, including the $40 prom ticket.

Michelle Rogers said cancelling the prom punished the majority of good kids.

"The security wasn't good," said Rogers. more

Hologram addresses business conference

The future of Australian communications technology has been showcased in Adelaide with a live hologram used to address a business conference.

Telstra has used the latest high-speed broadband technology to transmit an image of its chief technology officer Dr Hugh Bradlow in real-time, from his office in Melbourne.

The image has been projected as a hologram, to make it appear he was standing on stage.

David Thodey, from Telstra, says the technology has the potential to revolutionise how Australians do business.

"I think it's at least four, five years away before that'd be the case because the technology's got to come down in price, useability, it's got to be simple," he said.

"I've got to be able to set it up, you've got to be able to set it up, so I think it's on its way, just wouldn't like to put quite put a firm date on it yet."

For his part, Dr Bradlow thinks the technology could be useful in schools, homes and businesses. more

Please let me know what you think. Id like to stay in Finance & Investments. Goal is to do Trading, Investment Banking, Portfolio Management. Some programs say that they require calculus as minimum for finance...but i still see people with undergrad degrees in history or enlgish or music getting into MBAs or MSs. Ive been thinking about taking a few math undergrad courses from a four year inst and or getting an online certificate degree in math/banking from LSE. would the online ceritificate or the math classes help me become a better candidate? Please let me know what you think about this qs.There are videos and have interviewed admissions from these school in regards to whats the lowest GPA or GMAT requirement and they say that there is no lowest or highest..they say they focus on the grades "too" but they rather focus on how you have dealt with life, if you are a leader in life, and how you have acomplished your goals...they say the essay is key. If you still believe that my GPA is too low and therefore i have no shot, what do you recomend to do to balance things up? Getting an online certificate, taking classes as a non-degree student? all of these options a expensive..what else do you recommend? more

Resolved Question: Experience with validity of online for-profit colleges?

I work for a financial company in San Francisco (Franklin Templeton) and I'm hiring for an info systems manager position within our company. We have narrowed the candidates down to two for the middle-management position but I have a questions about the validity of online degrees because one of the two candidates went to college online. The position pays close to six figures so we really want to make the right decision before we invest those resources. Here are the candidate breakdowns: Candidate #1 Argosy University (Atlanta, GA) - B.S. Business Administration DeVry University (Nashville, TN) - M.I.S.M. Data Administration and Management University of Phoenix (Atlanta, GA) - M.B.A. Global Management -fresh out of MBA program and has 3 years experience as an IT Coordinator for Ernst & Young -M.I.S.M. stands for Masters in Info Systems Management FYI -Worked for Geek Squad at a Best Buy in Atlanta before Argosy Candidate #2 Santa Clara University - B.S. Economics and Mathematics University of California-Santa Barbara - M.A. Economics Stanford University - M.B.A. (not kidding) -Worked as a financial consultant before MBA for 4 years -Worked as a hedge fund analyst after MBA for one year -Fund went under in 2008 and he has been unemployed since -No IT management experience (although plenty of programming experience) -Focused on management and accounting at Stanford So as you can see I'm in quite a predicament. Candidate #1 is clearly more qualified in terms of experience and educational focus but those online degrees make me wonder. A Stanford degree is hard to pass up but candidate #2 just doesn't have the experience and background of #1. What would you do in this situation and have you ever hired someone with an online degree? If so, was the employee competent? more

Resolved Question: College Clarifications. Lots of Question, Please help.?

I am going to college next September. I am wanting a Career In animal Behavior/Primatologist/Anthropologist. And i will be getting A bachelor in Anthropology and Psychology. Now im not completely sure how college works and how its all set up (I also live in Cananda if that makes a difference. So hear are my questions: while I'm getting my bachelor can i also take other courses such as a business management course? On average how long does a 120 hour course take to complete? Are online courses harder? Can you do two bachelor programs at once? If so, is it really difficult? What is the average number a course taken in one semester? I also Have a daughter that I do not want to sacrifice by being at school 24/7, In that case would i have to stretch out my course's so that i go to school longer? If i wanted to take 2 bachelor degree programs (at the same time or not either way) and about 7 different courses, how long would it take, also taking in account of my daughter. If i didn't commit and do very well in high school, will that effect me getting accepted into a bachelor program? more

Resolved Question: Is there such a thing as a reputable online school?

My specific areas of interest are centered around information technology. My wife, and a couple of my friends go to a certain well known and widely advertised online school, and I frequently hear of the idiot antics of their classmates, and even teachers. "In the state of Canada, the geologic event was Ice", etc... I find it hard to believe that anyone in that institution cares about the quality of the education they are providing. Also, I have a significant amount of experience in IT already, and many of the degree programs that I've looked into consist largely of material that I either already know, or is of largely no interest or value to my career plans. Of course a degree will be broad, and cover things I don't care about, but I would like at least 60% of the material to be new to me. I know that if the only thing I get out of a program is a credential, as opposed to a genuine learning experience, I will never stay motivated enough to finish it. Masters level stuff would certainly be a learning experience, but I don't think I'm ready to give up my life as a technician yet, and it all seems to be 10,000ft perspective stuff. "How can IT help actualize resource allocation models to support my business strategy... blah blah blah...". Certainly it's important to someone, and maybe even me, one day... but not anytime soon. Am I being completely unrealistic here? Should I just grab up a "whatever" degree to check the block and keep learning everything I can through certification programs and self-study? Or is there a school out there where I can pick up a credential that WON'T be openly mocked in a job interview, one that will actually help me to learn things I need to know, or maybe even do both? more

Resolved Question: Paralegal Qualifications?

Now I know you can be a paralegal without having gone to school, but places are being stricter these days on how you can get these jobs. Here's my situation. I have an Associates degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in legal studies and I began a Bachelors program in Paralegal Studies in a new school. The program is ABA-approved. Do to a bizarre circumstance I had to switch majors from my Paralegal Studies major to the Business major with the Business Law concentration. There was a tremendous class overlap so the transition was perfect and most of my Paralegal classes are going towards something in the new major. My reasons for switching the major are way too long to list so I'll spare you unless you want details. It mostly involves time clashes with my work schedule (my new major is solely online). Now once I accomplish my Bachelors degree in Business Administration with the concentration in Business Law, do you think my legal educational background would be a good foot in the door for me at a firm? I'm also currently working in administration at a casino where I handle legal paperwork in relation to business, security, medical, and litigation issues. I still have my eye on becoming a Paralegal, but the major switch was a move I had to make. Thoughts? more

Resolved Question: How should i do one school full time and do another school p/t?

I am currently enrolled in an online university pursuing a degree in Business administration.I also enrolled in a pre-select nursing program at an community college,Mainly its just the pre-requisite courses so i can apply to the Rn program. But My question/well i need advise on is...How can I go about doing both of them at the same time.I am starting the fall online doing 3 classes and wanted to do another course or two at the community college as well.I need advise from anyone who has done the similar approach in school /or has done two different programs at once?...I did not want to stop one and do another, unless my other option was like doing one full time/and the other part-time.Another option was like doing both part time but that will delay my progression in one or the other program ...so give advise I need thanks. more

Resolved Question: Troy University or University of West Alabama for a online degree?

I am trying to decide which school to go to. I am wanting to take the Bachelors in Business Administration/ Accounting program. Has anyone ever got an online degree from either of these schools? If so, how did you like the program? Easy or hard? How long did it take to complete? Resolved Question: What college should I go to in Detroit?

I am 24 years old and want to go to college. I dropped out at 14 (bad bad times and parents were busy with my sisters) and got my GED at 16 all on my own. I wanted to go to college for years but couldn't afford it (time and money). I finally got my chance last semester and went to a community college and LOVED IT!!! I took bull pucky classes full time and did pretty well. I am not a person who can learn off the computer so internet classes are out (I know some people it is a wonderful thing but I learn better in a class with human contact). I just need to know what college in Detroit is right for me. I am going for duel degrees. I want to learn how to be a cake decorator and sugar artist (I have no interest in learning how to cook other foods just pastries). I also want a fall back degree in Business Management so that I can find work no matter what. I actually taught myself a lot of stuff already for pastries (just figured out how to do blown sugar work so much fun). I have been looking online but can't figure out which is the right college for me. I was thinking School craft College but can't figure out if they have a good culinary program for what i want to learn. Please help me I am so confused and I tried going to talk to a college counselor but they said i have to register as a student. I am on my own so i really need a college that has financial aide. Thank you more

Voting Question: Hello, am 30 years old and am need help finding a way to pay for Invitro.?

I am 30 years old and am currently in my 5th year teaching. I moved to Columbia, SC in 2005 when I was hired at my first school and moved here to Las Vegas, NV in August 2009. I currently teach for Connections Academy. We are an online, public, K-12 school that exists all over the United States. I have a BA in English Language and Literature, a M.Ed. in Education, Instructional Technology and a M.Ed. in Education, Divergent Learning. I love learning and am especially interested in the neurology of learning. I taught in a school for children who were in Juvenile Jail and the psych ward or drug rehab for one reason or another. This is what got me interested in the neurology of learning and teaching students with disabilities; at this school every child was labeled MH, LD, ED, or MD. I have found that I have a gift with students who other teachers can’t seem to reach. It may be because I went through school facing a lot of the same issues as they did; I have dyslexia and ADD. I had to teach myself how I learn; because I knew school was my only way out of WV and no one else cared if it was harder for me. On another note, I am also a writer and have a published Novella "The Echoes of Life" and am currently working on publishing a book of poetry and writing a serial killer novel. I have dedicated my entire life to helping children in any way I can. I started college Pre-Med and thought I was going to be a pediatric neurologist. My High Scholl Guidance Counselor told me I wasn't going to be a Doctor that I would end up a Teacher. I laughed at her. I was Pre-med for 2 years and all of my electives were English classes. At the end of my sophomore year I saw my first cadaver; this was a life changing event for me, I knew I could not cut on a cadaver. I immediately switched my major to English Language and Literature. When I graduated with my bachelors in English I realized you could not do anything with it. So I enrolled in Law school, I was going to do child and family law. It took me 3 week to determine I hated it, to me everyone was trying their hardest to make you look bad and make themselves look better. Subsequently I worked in a group home with Adults whom had severe Mental and Physical disabilities, for two years. After I was there a month I started teaching at the school my clients would attend during the day. This got me thinking about teaching. I looked into programs and started at American InterContinental University, where I got my M.Ed. in Education, Instructional Technology. Once I finished my degree I was hired in SC and moved in July of 05. My first day teaching I thought I had made a huge mistake, I was nervous and scared; until the students came. By 10 minutes into my first class I knew this is exactly what I should have been doing the whole time. Due to the dedication to teaching and my upbringing that I needed to be careful until I was in the right position to have children I put it off. Then I got sick and was dignosed with PID. My fallopian tubes were destroyed and shortly after I was diagnosed with Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and have gone through a lot of testing, procedures and had surgery. It has been determined that I have to have IVF to get pregnant. Furthermore, my egg count is decreasing rapidly so I have to start soon. I have wanted kids since I was 10 and started babysitting. My entire life is about children and I really am scared that it may not happen. I am trying every mean possible to come up with financing. I may have a lot of degrees and have been teaching 5 years but I don’t make a salary comparable to other teachers in Nevada. Furthermore when the economy went bad my boyfriends business dried up. When I was transferred to Nevada he found a job with a local sign company making $21 an hour. However 1 week after we arrived they called and told him their contracts got froze and they wouldn’t have work till November. November turned into February, and in February they quit calling and returning calls. My fiance got a job at the local gas station in March after months of applying and interviewing everywhere. So all of our savings are gone and I have quite a lot of debt. It is like in the last two years everything that could go wrong has. I’m working with a finance counselor now and trying to get us back to where we should be, however, it will take a while to pay the debt. We can afford a child and I will give up everything I have in order to do so. I can’t keep putting this off just because my situation isn’t perfect. I have looked all over but cannot find where or how to get help. I applied for a medical loan but was denied. If you know any other resources you are willing to share with me I am more than willing to accept them and would appreciate it immensely. Thank you,I have Insurance, but it does not cover any infertility treatments. more

Resolved Question: I would like to enquire about BIRCHAM INT'L UNIVERSITY (BIU), if anyone knows that it’s not a fake institue?

Actually i m planning to get my further studies through distance learning from BIU I have come to know about by GOOGLE and its offering many online courses that i was looking for since long time.. But As per encyclopaedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bircham_International_University CRITICISM & CONTROVERSY Bircham is listed as a questionable non-accredited school by Quack watch.[24] A 2003 article in South Florida's CityLink magazine reported that Oregon education officials had said that Bircham was "totally bogus" and quoted former FBI agent Allen Ezell, who investigated diploma mills as part of the agency's Operation Dipscam, as describing some of Bircham's promotional claims as "pure hokum".[25] The Oregon Office of Degree Authorization alerts the public that Oxford International University has "no connection to legitimate Oxford University in Great Britain".[26] In July 2007 a Mexican newspaper reported that the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) of Mexico had issued a warning against Bircham International and ten other foreign institutions identified as having committed academic fraud.[27] In April 2008 the Nairobi Business Daily reported that Bircham International University was operating in Kenya without authorization, "wooing unsuspecting students to its distance learning classes". An official of Kenya's Commission for Higher Education was quoted as warning that BIU degree certificates would not be recognised.[7] In March 2010 the same newspaper published a correction, stating that the April 2008 story had been provided by a person "who at the time of publication had a partnership dispute with Bircham over rights to represent the university in Kenya". The correction stated that BIU "is a Spanish institution of distance learning and is in good standing with Spanish authorities that offers alternatives to formal adult higher education specifically aimed at adult working professionals" and that its programmes "can be legalized and validated by the Embassy of Kenya in the USA or Spain despite the institution not being registered by the Commission for Higher Education in Kenya".[7] So anyone knows plz help me on the same. or let me know online universties offering courses in IT enginnering. I am residing in QATAR. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Am I being unreasonable?

I recently completed my CNA schooling and have since tried very hard to get a CNA job at a hospital or doctors' office, etc. previous to my CNA schooling I tried to get a regular job at a retail store or office, etc. I have experience with cash register, credit card machine, customer service, I type over 90wpm, I have computer experience, etc. I am also a photographer and have been doing odd jobs with that as well. I have always wanted to become a Registered Nurse (my mother is an RN as are a few others in my family). My original goal was to be a CNA and attend RN school at the same time, but that does not seem to be panning out. Registration for my local school for the RN program is July 1st, 2010, and I want to enroll. The problem is that my boyfriend's family thinks I am using going to school as an excuse to not get a job (They live in NY and I'm in GA, so they have no clue, they're just WEIRD), which is totally not true! EVERY DAY I do applications online, I mail out resumes, etc. The job market stinks, but my two cousins recently got their RN degrees and immediately had good jobs. My boyfriend is being semi-stubborn, he keeps saying he wants me to get a job, 2 years for schooling is too long, etc. but he comes right back and says for me to go to school, but it's more like he's trying to please me than support me. I don't know what to do! Do I keep fighting the economy and trying to get a job, or do I give that up and pursue my dream of becoming an RN? I am happy to work part time while in school, but have been told that may be impossible due to the work load. I am a mother to a 10 year old boy also, I have a small horse business as well, and my boyfriend is going back and forth from GA to NY to be with his mother who is terminally ill with cancer, so we have a lot going on. Should I just go to school and ignore the family's complaints? OH, i should add, his brother has now decided we need to move out of his house (we rent his GA house and he lives in D.C.) and get our own place. This only happened when I started CNA school and became a big issue now that i've shown interest in RN school. HELP PLEASE!!!! more

Resolved Question: Would you attend UNLV online since they only cost $54 but they only have B. S. in Social Science degree online?

I trying to decide should I go to Eastern Michigan University or UNLV because they are both regionally accredited but UNLV only has one online degree bachelor's degree and that is B. S. in Social Science degree and they have business degree for their Master's program. Would you go to UNLV online that only cost $54 a credit hour or would you get an online b. s. in business administration degree at Eastern Michigan University and they cost $319.20 per credit hour. I need your honest opinion please, thank you! more

Resolved Question: Can someone please click to see my question below thank you?

Ok, well I was in Las Vegas for my birthday this past week and last week, I saw an advertisement for UNLV, so I called them today and they told me that their online bachelor's degree program cost only $54.00 per semester. While, I was accepted at Eastern Michigan University but their online degree program cost $319.20 and you have to get accepted twice to their bachelor business degree program. They are both regionally accredited universities but UNLV graduation rate is higher than E. M. U. So, should I go to UNLV online that cost only $54 a credit hour or to E. M. U.online that cost $319.20 a credit hour. What would you do if you were me? I need your honest opinion on this one please, thank you! more

Resolved Question: Why do people put down online colleges/universities? There are ppl who went to prestigious schools w/no job.?

Why do I see so many nasty comments about online colleges and universities? And what kills me is that some of the comments I hear and see are from people who have never experienced going to school online? If you are going to make a comment on something, then you need to have experienced it first hand. Now I can understand the comments about online nursing programs but some online nursing programs do have clinicals in which the student meets at a hospital with an instructor to get that hands on training/experience. Online school is for working adults.I'm sorry but some of us do not have time to be in the traditional classroom. I'm working on my teaching degree. And next year I will start student teaching. The key word here is that I will be in a real school here in my city student teaching. And I have had clinicals too in which I have had experience watching children and teaching children.Yes I'm an online student but there are times in which I have to meet an instructor in person in an actual daycare/school. Why are there so many put downs about online school? And most of the comments are from people who don't know anything about online school because they are not enrolled in an online program. Some people are going by hear say which is a big mistake. All these comments saying I won't be able to find a job because I'm at an online school. Well guess what I personally know people who went to prestigious colleges/universities with a degree and they still don't have a job. There are people who graduated from Devry,Yale,Columbia,Princeton,Howard,Harvard,UIC,etc. and they still don't have jobs. So you can't say that a person won't have a job just because they are going to an online college. There are people from well known colleges/universities with Bachelors,Masters,or PhDs with no job or they are working a low rate job. For example one of my friends is working at a gas station and guess what she has a Masters from a well known university. The economy is bad and everyone is feeling the sting. So why so much put downs and discouragement saying a person won't get a job if they go to an online school like University of Phoenix,Grand Canyon University,National Lewis University,Western Governors University, etc. Most colleges/universities are offering online classes for the working adult. And like I said there are people from Princeton,Harvard,UIC,Chicago State,Howard,Yale,Devry,Kellar School of Business,Concordia University,Dominican University,University of Chicago, etc. with Bachelors,Masters, and PhD with no jobs or they are working in a retail store,Loews movie theatre, gas station, etc. This economy is bad for everyone. more

Voting Question: Why do I get Liberal Socialist Pro-Obama answers in the day time and Pro-Democracy, USA loving ones at night?

I had a common foil of mine ask me why I have asked a question so many times. I enlightened her to the fact that I do it to get a good cross section of what people are thinking. I came across an interesting thing along the way, different times of the day means a different type of person seems to be answering... *** Between the hours of 5 and 8 AM I get Pro-Democracy and America postings then between 9 AM and 6 PM I get Anti-America, Pro Liberal Socialist, Obama praising answers, then once again from about 7 PM till about 11PM Pro Democracy, then from about 12 AM to 5 AM I will yet again get Anti-America, Pro Liberal Socialist, Obama praising answers. *** See its very interesting. I would love to know why... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Last time I asked this question I had Liberal Socialist most likely unemployed or working at McDonald's somewhere, telling me that I was a loser for spending so much time online and "Maybe I should get a job", well before anyone says that I felt I should make myself clear. A. I have a job and in fact own my own business in CPU programming and development so I am going to be online 99% of the day, most days. B. I have three college degrees, One in CPU language and programming, (and I know the next two are strange) one in secondary education - History, and a third in C.A.M.S (Classic and Ancient Mediterranean Societies- i.e. Egyptology and the like...); so before you drop the food stamps on the ground, understand the people you are trying to insult because I will embarrass you. ...but I digress. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ What do you think it might be? P.S., Keeping in mind people... Yes I have indeed taken into account the different times zones in the USA and these are the results. more

Resolved Question: Can I get my MBA at Harvard or MIT as a mediocre student?

In the summer of 2010 I will graduate from FIU (Florida International University) with a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Studies. I spent two years focusing on Marketing until I realized I wanted a broader, more well-rounded education backed by specific marketing courses. I took classes ranging from physics, computer science, biology, and philosophy and I plan on graduating with a 2.5 GPA. Aside from a low GPA, I have a lot of business experience. I started selling virtual items on eBay through my e-commerce store at the age of 12. As a highly motivated individual with a lot of creativity and ambition, I launched an online business in my 2nd year of college geared towards offering hosting solutions and web development. I attained $10k in investment from family, I had impressive growth over 3 years, and now I plan on selling the company. This experience led me to realize I could attack a niche in the hosting industry and eventually developed a new, unique concept. I'm about to graduate from FIU and at the same time, I'm seeking financing for my new venture. The scale of this new business is much larger than my previous ones and I'm hoping this will impress university recruiters (assuming I attain capital for the venture and launch the concept). I've convinced investors that the concept is impossible to duplicate due to patent pending technology I've developed. I'm also very well connected with top officials, successful entrepreneurs, etc. that have seen me in action. I am prepared to ask them for a referral when I plan on applying to graduate schools. However, I just want to have a practical mindset so I can understand what milestones I need to achieve in order to gain entrance to a top-tier MBA program like Harvard or MIT's. I plan on spending the next year or two preparing my curriculum vitae and then applying for graduate school.I forgot to mention that I plan on getting tutoring for the GMAT from a Duke alumni. more

Resolved Question: MBA or Doctorate in business, which one gives you more money?

I have a degree in Microbiology and a Master's in Genetics. I worked in business development and sales for almost 7 years after graduation. I am now considering a one year MBA program or a 2 years DBA (Doctorate of business) program. "full time/ online/ intense program". which one will help me get more money in the business world? My first logical option is a doctorate, but I have read online that MBA is worth more, is that correct? more

Voting Question: Would CSU Global Campus be respectable?

I was thinking of attending CSU Global Campus but I'm a little worried. I know online degrees are considered worthless but I'm not sure if this would be different because it is attached to CSU. Accreditation information: "CSU-Global Campus degree programs are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HCL), the regional accrediting body for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, under extended accreditation from the CSU system campuses." Would a degree from here be respectable to the business world? Here is the address to take a look: http://csuglobal.org/ Any thoughts would be awesome. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Are there any major universities that offer online degrees?

Ok here is the thing, I am not interested in something like University of Phoenix or any other school that ONLY offers online degrees. I have asked my boss, my mother in law who runs her own business and my Aunt that owns her own community college and all three said they do not take candidates with degrees from schools that only offer online classes serious. I already have my degree in acounting and I was finishing up my bachelors in Human Resource but now I have to move from Ohio to California. It seems like most of the major California Universities are not letting me transfer my credits from my current University, so I am hoping I can find a major university that offers all online courses that I can get to transfer at least half of my credits. So does anyone know any major Universities be they ivy league, private or state run that offer all online programs? more

Voting Question: How can I go to nursing school but still pay the mortgage?

I was thinking about finishing up some pre-reqs and starting an online business program (mainly just to get a ba degree) but after having something happen to me today, I am really wanting to be a nurse. After this summer (2 classes) I'll have my AA degree. There is a program for nursing about a half hour away from where I live, but it's during the day all week. Or I can go to the main campus an hour away during the evening. How in the world can people afford to go to nursing school for 2 years AND pay the mortgage, utilities, etc.? I would love some advice from people who were in this situation. Thanks! The program I looked at was an AS Basic Program.. I emailed the person in charge but don't expect an answer until Monday at least; the site said I will be able to take my NCLEX-RN test at the end of the 2 years. My goal right now is to be an RN and not stop at LPN, which is what this program is designed for if I've got all my facts straight. more

Resolved Question: Please Help Me, what You will do in my situation?

Hi, everyone.. I need an advice well Im 28 yr old girl single mom of a 9 yr old boy I used to be involved in Real Estate & Mortgage since 2002 and was doing pretty good money but the market went down as all of you know., However on 2007 I didnt give up and opened up a business it was a video store, that went down as well Thank God I kept the equipment, so after that I've been working here and there and trying things on the side to start a new business again, you know all those business you see online & on tv that u can get rich all you have to do is buy the program and sucess is guaranteed" that's totally scams. So on 2008, I was very desperate and I started working as an escort for few months then I saved some money, and I took off because I didnt like that kind of work, with the money I saved I got myself back to school again to get a degree, then money obviously was gone because I wasn't working, so I went back in work as escort with another company and I got a ticket from police suppose to be for "Private Dancing without License"almost got arrested in California all I got from there was Comunity service, due to the fact it was my first issue with the Police, my background is clean, then I got scared off and that's when I stopped myself from doing that, I sold my car to survive with my son and my mom! I know its bad what I was doing but don't judge me, I have a sick mom, and I am a single mom without child support. My question is I'm thinking working as Stripper in Nevada, because of the money fast until I finish school or get into a business Im graduating from school this June 2010, unfortunally with that money I can't survive until I get more experience, I have friends they been asking me if Im a stripper, even on stores, I have been asked by guys if Im a stripper, they told me I've the body for it, so that's not something I obviously want to hear from guys. Im just a regular girl inside, Im shy well not very shy but Im not that show off type thing, I remember every time I have to work as escort I had to be drinking alcohol, because I could not do it sorber! I don't judge any occupation, dancers, escorts, etc.. But I would like to hear from a girl that currently works a stripper or any job that bring me money a little quick because I do not plan it to do for a long time, because Im worried my son can't find out later & judge me.. my savings from the sale of my car is almost gone, and Im not working, my mom is sick can't work and I have full custody of my son! more

Resolved Question: Is it reasonable to go back for a second degree?

I am going to try and explain my situation briefly: I am 24 years old and graduated from a state university a little over a year ago with a Bachelor's in Marketing. While in school, it took me awhile to figure out what field of study I wanted to concentrate in. I kept putting off this decision in hopes that a random class would spark my interest in a specific field. Ultimately, I decided that a business degree would be my best bet because it could open the door to multiple possibilities (e.g. careers or graduate school). Presently, I am working as a sales rep for a transportation company. I really like the company and people that I work for. There is great opportunity for success in the position and I am extremely grateful to have a full-time job (especially in this job market). However, the longer I have worked in sales, the more I seem to question my career path. It is still very early in my career, but when I think about where I want to be in 5 years, I really don't think I will be happy in my current position. I can't pinpoint exactly what makes me unhappy here, but I feel like my personality doesn't mesh well with those in sales. Marketing is a fairly broad field, so I feel like I still have plenty of options. Recently I have been looking at going back to school. After exploring (mostly through online material) in both undergraduate and graduate programs, I have found an interest in Computer Graphic Design at a "Technical" college. I feel that it coincides well with my Marketing degree and will allow me to specialize in a direction that I believe is more suitable to my situation. I am hoping that I would not have to take every prerequisite credit hour since I have already taken some of the classes in pursuit of my previous degree. Obviously, this is a major personal and financial decision. I was hoping that someone could share some insight or experiences. Is it practical to go back for another degree? Thanks for your time. more

Resolved Question: stay at home mom wants to run business and attend college. What am I doing wrong?

I want to do everything at once and I feel totally confused: 1) I am a stay at home mom. My husband is very traditional, he works from 7 am to 9 pm, and when he comes home, he refuses to do anything, he wants the house to be spotless and the food ready served to him, and he doesn't want to have anything to do with the baby, so I am the one putting my baby to sleep and basically responsible for everything. 2) I don't have any money at home, because my husband does the shopping and does not give me any allowance even $5. So my social life is basically non-existent. I don't even have a car, because when I saved my money and bought myself a car last year, my husband sold it and took the money and I haven't been able to get a car since and of course he is not buying me one. 3) If you ask me why I take this slavery life, is because my green card is conditional and in 2 months I need to extend it. We've been married for 5 years and our baby is 3 years old. So I may think about divorce later on if he treats me like this, but right now, that's not an option. 4) I have been accepted to a distance-learning doctorate of business (DBA) program and I am gonna start it from next month and I am already panicking on how to manage my time. ( I already have a Masters and degree and last year I was studying PhD at a traditional university), so now with being at home, online education is more practical. 5) I want to work on my business idea (home-based IT recruitment business), I set up the website, wrote the business plan, prepared all the marketing tools and studied all the learning materials and even developed contact database of clients and candidates, but I can't find time to make those calls and run the business properly and even when I have some time (when the baby is asleep), I am so stressed and confused, so I end up doing more work in the house or reading books. 6) All these things could be possible if my baby was attending pre-school part time, but my husband refuses to send her to pre-school and he wants me to take care of her and because I don't have a car, I can't get a job outside. Can you please tell me how I can better manage my life? I really need some help? more

Voting Question: Can I get OSAP for Online Studies?

Just curious if anyone knows, I am living in Canada but am interested in doing some online degree courses with the Academy of Art University. There are no universities in Canada that offer this particular program in Advertising in Canada as a Bachelor of Arts, which is what I am interested in. Can I get financial assistance from OSAP for this type of program with this school? Also, I am in a difficult living situation and currently am not employed, although I do have my own business, which I am working to getting off the ground, hopefully, though I am not sure whether this will be a reliable or any source of income (although I do hope for that), so I do need to move out and the sooner, the better. Would really appreciate some advice and clarification on the matter. Thank you in advance. more

Resolved Question: Earning your bachelor's degree online / untraditonally in order to travel?

I know, of course, you can study abroad in college for semester or years, or even all four years at universities of that country or even at American campuses abroad. Still, I am very stubborn and I am trying to figure out something else even less non-traditional that I can do in order to achieve all my goals. I want to keep living in different countries working as an English teacher, interning, volunteering at NGO's in south america , etc. I want to have a flexible schedule . This is where I turn to online education.... How is this seen by universities , businesses, and employers? What are the disadvantages ? Who has done it? What are the best programs and how do you get started? ps: i want to study international relations but I will settle for linguistics or something else in the realm of international studies and international development ( a part from international business) if that carreer is not offered. more

Resolved Question: Studying business online advice?

I am currently a student at Virginia Tech (freshman). I am sick of being in school i just don't want to go to classes any more. I only attend class once or twice a week and i keep relatively good grades so i shouldn't have any problems with difficulty of programs. My loans at tech will also be fairly hefty if i stay until graduation I would just like a program where i can study online and get a degree fast for a moderate price. If you have attended an online business school please tell me about your program and your experiences. All advice is welcome. more

Resolved Question: Any online PhD in Economics or Business?

I'm from a small country in South America (Ecuador) and I can't travel to the US or to Europe to get a PhD degree. I already have an MBA degree by a University in Mexico, but is not enough for me. Please, I would appreciate it if someone can help me with information about a respected PhD of DBA program in the US or Europe. more

Resolved Question: If you could, would you get your Doctorate online?

I am 32 years old. I have a Master's in Genetics, B.Sc in Microbiology, with 7 years of sales and business development experience. Last year I studied my first year of PhD in Genetics, all my courses were passed with A grades and I submitted a very good research proposal. I had the full studentship, but my professor told me that it is gonna take me 6-7 years before I can graduate as it is norm in their department. My baby was 1.5 years old at the time and she had a hard time dealing with daycare as she was always sick, I had to take her to day care in the morning and bring her back in the evening and it was interfering with my staying in the lab as the professors wanted me to stay in the lab until 7-8 pm but the daycare closed at 6 pm. She was there from 7 am to 6 pm every day, and because she was getting sick all the time, sometimes I had to stay at home to take care of her and that was again causing problem with the university. So I left the university to stay at home with her until she is a bit older. Now I am thinking of paying $500 a month to an accredited long-distance university to study DBA Doctorate of Business Management, the whole program is $16,000 and I can finish it in 2 years if I take 2 courses per month in their FAST method, which I think is totally doable because I am much of a reading person. Now, I don't know if I should wait until the next year or two and go back to the traditional university and finish my PhD in Molecular Biology which takes longer, but it will most likely be paid by Assistanship and the degree might be more "accepted", or should I take advantage of this opportunity, pay for the university, study at home and get my DBA which may not be that "valuable" as it is studied long-distance, but by any chance, if it is regarded valuable in the corporate environment, it means that I could possibly get a great job in 2 years. What do you think? Please advise? more

Resolved Question: Help!!! Please give me your opinion or advice!?

When I was 20 my wife(g/f at the time) and I foudn out we were having a baby. We quickly jumped into an accelerated college program (i went for business and she went for accounting) to make sure we would be able to provide for our son and be very wealthy. During the last 3 years I was working a job m-f 7:00 am- 2:30p.m and also work 4 hours saturday and 4 hours sunday. I would go to school two days a week from 5-9:30 at night and either take a saturday class or an online class. Well I got really used to the schedule and having time. I would get home on days I didn't have school spend a few hours with my son then go to the gym with my friends and my brother for 2 hours and then come home most days to spend time with my family and other times go to my friends house and just hang out a little. A perfect balance right? Well I graduated in December and a friend from school who liked my work at school was actually pretty high up in a fortune 300 company and he was able to get me a supervisor job that I started early February. Since I have started the job I have been miserable. My thoughts are very depressed. I can not help but to think how short life is and how life is going to fly by. I don't think in days I only think in years. Things I used to enjoy doing I do not get the same enjoyment or I feel I don't have the time to balance those things. The hours are 3:30 in the morning till about 4:40 or sometimes to 6:00 at night. Other hours I work are 4:45 to 3:30(which isn't that horrible) and currently I am working 3:00p.m. to 1 or 2 a.m. I will be 24 years old at the end of next month and I feel so trapped. I have been thinking about going back to school to get a Secondary Education Degree in Matematics( which is what I went to college for when i was 18 but dropped out because I was still dealing with issues from my moms death the past year). My wife wants to go to school to teach younger kids as well. Since we both already have bachelor's degrees it will take only 2 years maximum to get the education degrees. I am scared to take this chance because I do get paid pretty well( just under 50k) fresh out of college and I will get two nice raises in the first year and I am not sure if the economy will have any teaching jobs open for me when I graduate. I would work while going to school but teaching programs do not have night school. I feel that I may be also too old to make this change. One benefit I might have is that the Department Head of math, the vice principal, and a teacher of over 18 years in the math department at my old high school all said they would put their names on the line to get me a job and that math teachers are always needed. I am sure I would have the balance of time and decent pay again when i get a math teaching job. Where I am from in Illinois , math teachers start out about 45k. I really want to be happy again and enjoy life but also be able to enjoy what I do and provide for my son. By the way we live with my wifes parents. So my bills are cell phone($130/month), car insurance on two cars($150/month), which I would bring down to one car if we went to school, rent ( $250/month), cable t.v. which I cna cancel and a gym membership I can cancel. All other bills are just food and gas and entertainment. Please give me some advice. All I hear all the time is how lucky i am to have a job and that gets really frustrating being how miserable I am. I do not have insurance yet for another month so I can't see a therapist yet either. more

Resolved Question: For all you active or retired navy soldiers: is the navy right for me?

Okay, so Im interested in joining the US Navy and I was wondering if some of the answers to the questions I asked my recruiter were accurately rendered. So to all you people who are currently enlisted in the navy or have been I'd appreciate what your experience has shown you to be true concerning the matters I'm about to cover. Based on my personal characteristics and goals, do you believe joining the navy would be in my best interest? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. So to start, here is a little background on me. I am 23 years old trying to get my bachelors degree in business administration, more specifically a focus in entreprenuership or small business management. I have about 2.5 years left before I graduate and I wish to complete my bachelors degree debt free, taking 15 credit hours per semester untill I finish and then hopeful move on to an MBA program. Now, from what my recruiter tells me, the most amount of time I would expect to be out to sea is about 6 months - during my entire 4 year naval career - depending on what job I qualify for. What concerns me is whether or not I will have the time to complete a degree in the time I am with the navy. Since, from what I understand, when on shore I will be working 8 hour days, when off shore, fitting in school once traveling can be difficult to do. How accurate is my understanding of the dailey time committment? In otherwords will I be out to sea on only one rotation, or can the navy basically ship me out whenever they want and where ever they want, for how ever long they want without a moments notice? I personally dont want to take all of my classes online and wish to take my core classes at an accredited land based university that I would be required to physically attend... Plus I dont want to exit the navy after my four year term with no college degree because I was out to sea most of the time... My recruiter explained it to me as I would be be working mostly 9am-5pm, monday-friday leaving my evenings open for school and weekends... Also would I only be expected to actively serve 4 years, of an 8 year contract. How true is what he explained to me? As I mentioned earlier, finishing my degree is of most importance to me. I like the fact that I wouldn't have to worry about the financial aspects of school while in the navy, but I want to be sure I wont have a hard time of prioritizing my degree because of factors outside my own control, like being shipped off to bumb fucking egypt for 12 months, or having to work crazy hours and so forth. Keep in mind if I stayed in the civilian sector taking 15 credit hours per semester I could have a degree in 2.5 years, but most likely with debt :(. So what should I do? Join or not? Will I be able to complete a degree and be fully fuctional in my roll with the navy? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I have a bachelors but would like to become an LPN any accredited online programs available?

I have a bachelors in general business from an accredited college. I currently work in the assisted living industry, have a passion for it, and would like to pursue an LPN or RN license simply to provide nursing care to assisted living residents (I would not like to work within a hospital setting). The current community colleges in my area have 2-year waiting lists and I would like to begin a program now. Are there any accredited programs online that provide a LPN degree or RN degree? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Need help finding perfect online school?

Hoping someone can help chart my future here with a great school suggestion. I am currently in a two year community college but need to move to a four year program to complete my bachelors. My criteria are as follows: 1. Must be nationally and regionally accredited 2. Must offer complete Business Administration degree online 3. Must not be online only 4. Need reasonable tuition of $600 per credit hour or less (fees included) (I live in Ohio for state schools) 5. It should be a decent school that will look good on a resume (i.e. no University of Phoenix crap) I guess that is it. Flexible transfer credits would be a huge plus. I am sure there are a lot of schools like this, but finding them in a sea of college scam schools online is proving to be really difficult. Any help is appreciated. more
