Open Question: Was Manny Villar ever really poor?

Was Manny Villar really ever poor? AS I WRECK THIS CHAIR By William M. Esposo (The Philippine Star) Updated February 07, 2010 12:00 AM “Nakaligo ka na ba sa dagat ng basura? (Have you bathed in a sea of garbage?)” is the opening line of the jingle of Nacionalista Party presidential candidate Manny Villar which is featured in a television commercial that attempts to project him as having been one of the poorest of the poor. But was Manny Villar really one of the poorest of the poor as what his advertising has been projecting? A Chair Wrecker reader from Tondo who claimed to know the Villar family when they still resided there debunked that notion of Villar ever having been poor. This information was relayed to yours truly via our response email address. The former Villar family Tondo neighbor cited reference points to support his assertion that Manny Villar was never really poor — including the claim that Villar’s father used to have a “nikaladong (stainless steel clad)” private Jeep. During the 1950s, a nikaladong private Jeep is a status symbol in Tondo, definitely not the hallmark of a poor household. Considering how Manny Villar has been dodging the serious issues pertaining to his use of public office in order to add immense benefits and profits to his businesses, your Chair Wrecker decided to do some investigating. Guess what Manny Villar’s online bio revealed: “Manuel Villar Jr. was born on December 13, 1949 in Tondo, a densely populated district of Manila. He was the second of nine children of Manuel Villar Sr., a government employee, and Curita Bamba, a seafood dealer. As a young boy, he helped his mother sell fish, crabs, and shrimp in Divisoria to help earn money to pay for his education. Villar finished his education at Holy Child Catholic School in 1962, and finished his high school education at Mapua Institute of Technology in 1966. He attended the University of the Philippines-Diliman and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1970. He returned to the same school to earn his master’s degree in business administration in 1973.” In the early 1950s, the rich lived in the big compounds in Ermita and Pasay and what was called New Manila in Quezon City. In Tondo, you found the middle class and the poor as well. Former president Joseph Estrada also claims roots in Tondo but his family was never poor. Based on his online bio, Villar cannot really justify calling himself poor. The Villar Tondo home, as shown on his 2009 TV commercials, was made of sturdy materials. It has lasted to this day. His father was employed while his mother operated a fish, crab and shrimp dealership in lucrative Divisoria Market. It may not be Class AB household income but it is definitely not Class E. Proof that the Villar children were never really wanting is the fact that Manny Villar studied in private schools. The indigent kids went to public school. Enrolling one’s child in a private school is a middle class value and option. The indigent kids who do manage to finish high school would tend to immediately learn a craft in order to be able to earn money right away. Aspiring for a business administration master’s degree is not the usual post high school move of indigent kids. Villar narrated on his 2009 TV commercial, with Boy Abunda interviewing him, that as a young kid he thought that corned beef was soupy because that was how they used to prepare it at home. This, he claimed, was their way to ensure that everybody had a share. But the fact is that there are really two ways to cook canned corned beef. One is the dry sautéed type while the other is the soupy type where you can add potatoes and cabbage. Both the rich and the middle class enjoy corned beef both ways. Also, poor folks, especially a family of eleven, CANNOT AFFORD to eat canned corned beef. For a family of 11 to be eating corned beef confirms that the Villar family is anything but poor. That was the case then and more so now when the poor go hungry or manage to eat only one meal a day. Up to the 1980s, people from the provinces consider it a status symbol to be eating corned beef. That is why canned foodstuffs, especially corned beef, are being displayed in the sala by many households in the provinces for these to be seen by visitors. For Manny Villar to don this facade of being “poor” once upon a time just to gain political advantage should make every Filipino voter ponder as to what else he would be willing to do just to attain his objective. Wisdom from a cherished honest man Tomorrow, our family will mark the death anniversaries of our Dad and Mom who both died on the same date, four years apart. Mom passed away on February 8, 1966 while Dad passed away on February 8, 1970. Our Dad was the most honest person we knew. During the era of President Elpidio Quirino, a close friend and former classmate of Dad, an opportunity was given to Dad to make a cool P200,000 — a fortune th more

Open Question: hypothetically speaking: wedding planner?

Here's a question for all you brides. I currently operate a very small wedding business; I make handmade wedding stationary, favors, and other essentials. I do it online and I attend a few wedding expos to build clientele. My husband and I moved across the country for his job, and before we moved, I was venturing into consignment wedding dresses. Anyway, now that I'm in a new city, I'm thinking about starting to go a little deeper into the business and go into wedding planning. I planned my own Mexico wedding and it was very successful plus I acted as wedding planner for a friend's wedding [directed rehearsal, dressed the hall, and detailed the entire day even down to grabbing a pail when the ceiling of the hall started to leak all over the head table, sending my husband out to find new fish for centerpieces after I found that the heating didn't work in the hall and half the fish had died, and burning the back of my leg putting out a fire that a guest had lite]. Unfortunately, my friend and I had a falling out since then, so I cannot use her as a reference. Anyway, I feel extremely confident in my abilities, I am going to university right now [I'm in my last year of a double degree so there isn't a way for me to go and take a wedding planner course or something]. How do you go about hiring someone? What credentials do you look at? Help? ~~ more

Okay I'm not a psychiatrist and I have no degree in anything of the sort. I know you're thinking people have friends and family to talk to about these type of things, but not everyone has family/friends and not many people feel comfortable talking to them about personal stuff they would rather talk to a stranger.Sorry I had a typo... Resolved Question: Is it legal for a church group to stalk you into a college and impose their problems onto you?

I was not a member of a church when I attended college. We were excluded for non attendance. I frankly got sick of the things done to me, said about me, and the conniving and scheming and plotting. I was not sleeping around, literally or figuratively with anyone. I had all the sex anyone needed. I loved my husband. I got tired of their coming into work and harassing me and slandering me. I think they wanted us to leave, so I did. I ran into a couple of old friends, I thought we had become friends, from the church I went to before,, females. I did not know we were enemies. One I referred to a counselling center because I was worried about her companions. . I didn't mean any harm. I had no ulterior motive, I knew of some others who had gone there. I thought they might refer her to Christian or decent singles groups. I was worried about someone i saw there. The other I don't know. I thought we were at least getting along. I enrolled in college . These people went in there and one framed me for cheating. Sounds like I think I have no responsibility for my actions, not so. She offered to let me copy or use her husband's work. I think this man was framed and railroaded for arson which he did not commit. There are way too many people who would have had motive to arson his home. Myhuisband, son, nor I, nor daughter had motive whatsoever. She had absolutely nothing Iwanted or envied, nor my husband. She went on and got her Master's in Elementary Education as did her younger sister. I got trashed so badly I could not work in anything. My kids did not get to go to college. I ended up out in the street in shelters, lost my home. All. They had to do their undoing though. Not to be out done. They had to show how magnanamous they were, so forgiving and longsuffering. I just can't function without them. About this guy's homework. I didn';t want to see it. I had an A when I started in there, I was so thrilled. I just gave it up. I assume I deserve the D. I had enough electives, that I could not use that. This was not right. There was nothing right abouit it. I have been harassed based on lies. Some of it I recognize the lie, lies on me. Some is to keep me from getting outside being healthy. I have been cheated out of six years of my life now, my career. the friend in college who offered me her husband's home work, which I did not go get or want, called and said she had a dilemma. She had no dilem na. I said. I did not ask for his work, I did not get it. I did not see it. I changed my major. I had not done anything illegal or immoral. We moved to get away from someone who slandered and defamed me to the max. Insulted me. He almost got knocked in the head with a limb, he made me so mad. I am not dangerous but to come to my home and insult my integrity in my yard. ? Next question. Again, I am not a member of a church, not that one. Not then, not now. I was not going to go to the local college here, was going online. When would it be a local church groups business regarding my grades from long ago? I earned my degrees fairly. Everything I did was open, above board. I did not sneak. I did not cheat. No class told me to just get through something. Only otj here did that occur. Sometimes you must pick your battles. Sometimes you have to give it up, or settle for less. That is my choice. I get punished for knowing people in churches, I mean mere acquaintances. Everyone I know gets turned into some sort of scheming plot. Believe me, they are not friends. I do not have to relive college. I do not have to relive hs I do not have to re do my life to suit these pseudo Christians. Why did I not get a nursing job here ? Very simple. My working in nursing only put money into my pocket. Gave me a life, a chance to live. I had malpractice insurance. Suing it put money into a lot of people's pockets. Suing where I came from. This is thievery and fraud. No one had cause to sue me for anything. I am not gay. I will not allow anyone to call me gay for any amount of money I have never been attracted to a female in my life. They have voiced extreme hatred for me and laundered a lot of benefits to the community here. I lost my career again. I have about one hundred dollars over 100 per cent poverty. Picked up my job aps. I did not even get fair consideration. I wanted to work in a big hospital. I do not want to be segregated in any way. I will not work in a minority group, not if I could. I did nothing to be sued by minorities. The ones spoken of, I have cause to sue, big time. It is over. They won. They cheated, framed, lied stole. I voiced the interest ind ating and marrying a man, not anyone I knew at the time, no specific purpose. They got me terminated from my job. Ripped off everything I had, followed me to every job, ruined everything. Lied on me. This is all being done by a religious group, every bit of it. It is hatred and prejudice. I cannot fI did not come here to marry. I came primarily, first, above all to get a job in nursing. Secondly to be near my daughter. No one has a right to tell me I must marry, or I must stay single. My hormones are normal for a female my age. I am not abnormal in any way except my weight. It is degradation, attempts to destroy myself image, try to make me depressed. That is criminal. more

Resolved Question: Questions concerning mark. cosmetics?

I'm thinking about selling mark. cosmetics. I'm 19 years old and attending college for a degree in business management. I understand I will not make a living and I don't plan on selling mark. to make a great deal of money, I just think it will be fun and something my friends and classmates will be interesting in buying and love. I'm very concerned with giving them my credit card number but I understand it is necessary, so my first question is what exactly do they charge your credit card for? I am aware of the $20 start up fee, and the orders that are placed will obviously be charged on my card as well, but what else is there? How much is shipping for the products and do I have to pay for that as well? To my understanding, there isn't a monthly amount of orders I have to place, correct? A lot of things I am reading online is that people order a large amount of product expecting it to sell and then are stuck with the extra and can not return it. Would it be reasonable to only order product when there is a request from a customer? I understand I'll have to buy product for myself and for sampling purposes so they can see it on someone, but other than that I don't see why I should have to order large sums to sell with out people ordering it in the first place. Other than these specific questions any advice or other opinions on selling mark. would be helpful! Thank you! (: more

i am getting my bachelor's degree in psychology and hope to go into the business world. i have read online that liberal arts majors aren't a disadvantage, and that actually many employers prefer them, as they have better problem solving and writing skills. i am trying really hard to decide if i should immediately go to grad school instead of immediately looking for a job. i know that if i don't go now, i probably won't ever (my parents would pay if i go now), but i am just sooooo burned out on school and don't know if i could handle another 2 years. honestly, how much more employable would having a MBA make me? would it be worth it, really?what can i do to make myself more marketable if i do not go to grad school? i am good with computers and my resume is very well padded, but i do not have much work experience, nor have i had an internship, because the psychology department hasn't exactly helped me with that. more

Resolved Question: Do you think my dreams are stupid? The degree I'm pursuing, my life goals...?

I have been holding a job at my campus since I was a freshman where I meet people visiting our campus. I get paid to mingle, talk, inform, etc. Basically speak + entertain them. I've found my background in my major Communications has been really helpful but I'm so scared about the real world! My focus is in Electronic Media, and I can't begin to describe how much I've learned about social media, advertising, persuasion techniques, business, etc. I feel like it's shaping me into a better writer, speaker + my networking has increased so much. My minor is Marketing and I'm trying to get a PR certificate. My dream is to get a job, and attend Animation school at the same time. On the side I work with music and have a dance team. I feel like my friends wanting to be doctors/engineers/teachers, etc are more practical...and I'm foolish. I've come so far, won awards, and have my own website paid for by the school just to write for the campus and entertain readers. I've looked at other majors, read up on everything, I've researched and I STILL love what I want :( All the career tests online and at my university say being a film director, creator or designer is what's right for me but I'm scared. more

Resolved Question: What schools offer a master's degree in software management?

I am only looking for schools in the United States. So far, I have only found two: RIT - MS in Software Development and Management http://www.rit.edu/emcs/ptgrad/online/101.php3 University of St. Thomas - MS in Software Management http://www.stthomas.edu/gradsoftware/programs/mssm/default.html I am looking for a very strong curriculum in software management, similar to the curriculums offered by the schools above. What I'm not looking for: business or project management degree with only a light focus on software. The links above show what appear to me to be a good curriculum. more

Resolved Question: How can I get my son to talk to us again?

My son is deaf and 27 years old. He has two bachelor degrees, major in business and anthropology with minor in history and art. After he got a degree in anthropology and minor in history, he tried to find a job in that field, but he hasn’t been able to find anything. So he went back to school to get another degree in business and minor in art. Ever since he graduated nearly a year ago, he hasn’t been happy with any thing he found. He complained bitterly about how no one wanted to hire him because he cannot talk with clients or answer phone and that the only thing he could really do is being a low level manager at retails. He loathe working in retail so much that he’s basically working with deaf kids with emotional disturb problems and making only $14 a hour. I thought he’d just wait until the economy recover before trying to find a better job. To my shock, I found out from a couple family members that my son have been asking them a lot of questions about the highest level of math class they have took. This is downright bizarre to me since he hate math so much that he do everything to avoid math and barely pass the math classes to graduate. After some talking, I found out my son have been studying math intensely on his own everyday and wanted to get back in school to studies engineering. I tried to tell him that he cannot go into field just because they pay better. He has to do something he loves. He got mad and told me that he did this and it got him no where. I tried to explain him that the economy is bad and that once thing get better, he’ll have easier time. His reply was “I’m done with being at disadvantage” A couple of other family members have tried to talk to him about how engineering would be incredible hard for him. His reply was pretty much “if I can studies algebra and trigonometry good enough to get 90% or better on every test I found online then I can get good enough to get in engineering school by fall” Finally he deleted every family member from his facebook and isn’t talking to any of us. He ignores every text, email, and anything we sent to him. I’m getting really worried about him. I don’t understand why he wouldn’t listen to anyone and see that thing is hard for everyone? I’m planning on driving down to his place and have a face to face talk with him. I am just afraid that he is going to set a goal for himself that he cannot accomplish. I know he can accomplish almost anything, but math is something he has never been good at and struggles with his whole life. more

Voting Question: Is there a school in or near the Pittsburgh area that offers a program in Event Coordination and Design?

I recently went back to school to pursue a career as an event/wedding planner. I'm currently pursuing an Associate's Degree in Business Management from CCAC. Although I know that real world experience is what I really need, I'm asking if anyone knows of any certificate programs or courses in Event Planning, Wedding Planning, Event Coordination, Event Design, etc. in the Pittsburgh, PA area that is NOT an online course. I have found programs in Las Vegas, San Diego, and other cities, but can't seem to find anything on campus close to home. more

Resolved Question: College Degree and no experience?

Hello I have technical degree and no job experience whatsoever , i had an internship abroad which was purely technical and i have a good gpa. Iam currently a graduate student, and iam looking for an internship or any experience in summer. In some internships i looked at the requirement is demonstrated leadership experience, I was a team leader for my senior design project, and would this be counted as a demonstrated leadership experience. Also, in some of the companies I've looked at, when applying for internship experience, in their online application system they ask for work history that can be up to ten years, no I dont have any business experience except for the internship I did abroad which was technical. so because of not having job experience, except for academics so is there a huge possibilty that I will be screened out immediately because of not have work experience. more

Resolved Question: Question about University Accreditation?

I found an online (distance) Bachelors Degree program in Music Business through a school called Full Sail in Winter Park, Florida. They are a "Career School" that specializes in Entertainment Majors. I have already earned my AA Degree from a local Community College here in California and I am interested in enrolling in this Music Business Bachelors Degree program at Full Sail. They are accredited through the "Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges" which is a national Commission. However, I am worried that businesses in California (where I will work) will not look too highly at this accreditation for my Bachelors degree. Should I be worried at all? Is this just as good as any accreditation or regional accreditation? Will I have a "REAL" Bachelors degree to be proud of? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I am not sure if I want to work for a degree in Accounting or in Marketing. I can only earn degree online.?

I live in a town of about 15,000 people with several smaller towns surrounding it.... I am not sure which business would more successful in this area for me. I am very creative and have a graphic arts background already - so Marketing degree seems to fit. However, I am REALLY good at math and numbers. A Math degree and teaching Math to high school students is my dream career - but I cannot find an accredited online undergraduate math degree.... so accounting might be a good option. What do you think? What will earn more money or do better in a smaller community? Would I be able to telecommute? more

Resolved Question: What is the best path to take regarding practicing criminal law?

I'm an aspiring criminal lawyer, hopefully a prosecuting lawyer in the future. I am in my first year of undergraduate work at the University of Florida and I am well acquainted with the process of becoming a lawyer and earning a JD. I understand it is important to keep a great GPA and do well on the LSAT to get into a good law school. However, my true question is whether there are any specific law schools that stand out as better schools in the specialty of criminal law. To clarify, there are many rankings of the law schools on the internet, usually with Harvard, Georgetown, Yale, etc towards the top. However, they are generally an overall ranking of the school which gives a broad education for all types of aspiring lawyers from those who want to get into family law, appeals courts, corporate business, etc. Are there any certain law schools that are known for pumping out some great criminal lawyers, or is there really no preference to the school apart from its overall prestige and education. Obviously going to Yale Law school will give me better career opportunities than earning an online law degree. However, I was wondering if among the top, or any general cluster of law schools, if there were any that stood out as extraordinary for criminal law in particular. This is just a general inquiry on the subject. I know I have a few years to go before I will be deciding which law schools to go to, and many more years before I'll be considering specialties and where I want to practice. But I was hoping to gain some input early so I can possibly set my goals high for some better law schools that fit my interests. more

Voting Question: Some questions regarding becoming a Marine Officer.?

Ok guys, I am looking to start up college, and am very interested in becoming a Marine Officer. I know that they require a 4 year college degree, but does it make a difference if that degree is earned via online schooling? I run a small side-business, and it would be much more convenient for me to do it online. Also, would online schooling make me eligible to attend the PLC classes? Lastly, if I were to clep a BUNCH of my college work and get done in half the time, would they consider that as acceptable, or do they require a full four year college stint? Thank you in advance for any and all help.Tyler, if I were to finish school up in less time than normal, why would they see that as a bad thing? If I had the initiative to clep through courses that I already knew, I wouldn't think that would be looked down on... I had wanted to attend the PLC course at least once, just to get a feel for the job, to make sure it was what I really wanted to do. However, I have yet to get a definitive answer as to whether or not online courses would get me accepted to attend PLC. I have called the recruiter several times. However, he couldn't help me with my questions, and said that there is only one Marine Captain in a tri-state area who does the officer recruiting, and he is extremely busy. more

Resolved Question: Should i go on to school or work? Effects relationship?

I have a dilemma which effects me and my bf of 6.5 yrs for obvious reasons. I just graduated with my bachelor's degree in Sociology. Well, mistake, yes. It was the only thing I was interested in at the time and I did not know it was such a low-paying general field. I have always been business natured and all my jobs through college were business-related, so now I want to pursue my MBA. However, I have about 40K in student loan debt from my BA. And, I am having difficulty finding a job -- any job -- in my area. I have been applying for EVERYTHING from assistant manager at Toys R Us to Administrative Assistant. And I DO have experience and a Bachelor's. So I am wondering if I should just work only and pay down these large loan bills first or get into an MBA program now (which I would do in the evenings/online) and take on a little more student loan debt. This program through Western Gov University is really cheap for an MBA, it's $3,250 per term (6 months) and they said you can be done in 1-2 years depending on your own speed and what you can take on. So, it would cost between $6, 500 - $13K for an MBA. And I would have that much MORE student loan debt. But, I WOULD have a masters in business Admin which is usually asked for in well-paid positions........... Is this a bad idea??? I would also be working and getting experience. I am unsure of what to do! In YOUR opinion -- what would you do? And have you been in a similar situation?SORRY -- My age is 24...... I will be 25 in August 2010. THANKS!! more

Voting Question: Microsoft Certification Tuition?

12 years ago I was a certified Microsoft software technician. During the day I was outsourced to customers by the company I worked for. At night I taught at a technical college and also volunteered my time to teach displaced, out of work adults (most from manufacturing environments who worked for companies that took their business to Asia and Mexico) who desperately needed computer skills to become competitive in the workforce. When I had my son, I took a break from work to be at home with him. My husband's earnings were more than enough to support us. Well . . . he's not my husband anymore (it happens) and I found myself taking a job, any job, to support myself and my son. Many friend's have applied for and received grants to go back to school. My first love is teaching and the second computers. I'm hoping someone has traveled down this path before me and may offer some support. I have no desire to return to a two or four year degree program, whether a traditional classroom setting or a online college. What I would like to do is regain my Microsoft certification. Has anyone ever been sucessful in obtaining a grant strickly for certification? more
