Chamber seeks entrepreneurs

CHEBOYGAN - Entrepreneurs are being sought by the city and the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce. A study led by the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, the city and the Chamber is being conducted to determine the feasibility of a business incubator in the area. The business incubator, a support process and system that accelerates the successful development of start-up and fledgling companies, would provide entrepreneurs with many benefits, said Chamber Director Kim Pappas."The success of an incubator is highly dependent on the support received from the community and the local professionals who are willing to participate in assisting new businesses," Pappas said. "It's a structured environment where they can receive a wide range of support services, business related training, technical and professional services, access to capital and a network of connections that will help them successfully establish their business model."Pappas said a steering committee has been formed to work with the community to assess the need, desire and community support for the initiative."Over the next several months, there will be outreach to civic organizations and clubs as well as an online survey that will be e-mailed to all Chamber members," Pappas said. more

Small business role in creating jobs

The headline sounds great: small businesses are California's job creators.

What does that mean for the state, for policy makers, for our communities, and for small businesses themselves?

It's Your Business asked UC Irvine economist David Neumark, who is the most recent to connect the state's small businesses to job growth.

His study, "Do Small Businesses Create More Jobs" with Brandon Wall of Stanford and Junfu Zhang of Clark University, was just published.

In the past, Neumark, who is also a senior fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California in San Francisco, has researched the impact of increasing the minimum wage and whether companies are moving out of California.

The new study wades knee-deep into a long-running controversy among scholars about where new jobs really come from. more

Voting Question: Do you think they should add back real life skills into our middle and high schools?

Such as auto shop, business math, home economics, accounting, wood shop, metal shop, electrical, plumbing, framing, computer programming, data entry, office practices, business management, cooking, etc? Wouldn't this help with critical thinking and help make our high school graduates more useful instead of pathetic? Isn't it sad that the only thing high school graduates can do is work for minimum wage or try to go to college? Is it some sort of conspiracy or something? more

Resolved Question: Should I change my major from Architecture to Business (Marketing emphasis)?

When I started college, I decided to major in Architecture because I had a love for drawing and building scale models. I enjoyed the drafting classes I took, but when it came to the design studio classes, I felt that's where my weakness was, because I'm more of a technical person than a creative one. I still continued to work hard, received my associates degree, and I applied and was accepted into architecture school. The first day of school, the professor assigned us to design three structures with floor plans, elevations and 3d sketches, and to have it done in a week. The workload was just too much for me, so I ended up dropping out of the program after the first week. So after quitting school, I figured I should try to get a job. I searched all over for entry-level drafting positions, but although I had a degree, no one would hire me - mostly because of lack of experience and because of the weak economy. With no jobs available in architecture, I went to a temp agency and was offered a data entry position. I couldn't afford to be picky, so I accepted it. So far, it's been one of the best companies I've ever worked for! The product is great, the company is growing really fast, and it's a really great working environment with excellent opportunities to advance. I quickly moved from data entry to sales assistant to now accounts receivable assistant.in just six months. I recently received an email from the director of the architecture program stating that he really wants me back in the program and thinks I can succeed, but I really want to keep my job and if I go back to architecture school, I would have to quit my job and be stuck being a starving student again. I spoke with the CEO of the company, he told me that if I wanted stay with the company, that he foresees growing positions in marketing and sales. So, I've been thinking about going back to school, but changing my major to Business with a Marketing emphasis to give me a better chance to advance within the company. Plus, I can continue to work while I go to school. I still like architecture, but I don't know if I like it enough to quit my job and commit to the heavy workload. Also, I'm not as creative as I would like to be, so I question how successful I could really be, in school and professionally. On the other hand, I don't really know much about Business (Marketing) yet and don't know if I'll succeed in that either. Plus there is no guarantee that I'll be able to move up in the company. Anything could happen in the next few years. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: 2nd college degree or certificate online in finance?

Hi, I wound up getting a liberal arts degree (I won't specify the degree) just to stick it through. I don't really care for it and am not interested in pursuing a masters or similar with my current degree. But I am interested in a 2nd degree. Please don't tell me to get an MBA because I have no business or financial background whatsoever so I have no knowledge at all in that area. I currently do have a full time job that I like and it is kind of like data entry. It's not related to my major obviously but I know that my degree is what got me the job plus other experience on my resume. I am surrounded by people in the financial/accounting areas though I have no knowledge of what those people do. I would like to learn and understand that stuff. So I really became interested in a finance degree. I know 2nd degree programs exist at universities where you only have to take the courses for your major because the rest transfers. But is there any really good schools that you know of for this in the New York City area? Any cheap though real name hard work colleges? Is there any way that I could take it all online? Or is there some kind of certificate that I could get instead? Anyone have experience with the New School in NYC? I work long days so I could really only fit in a class like on a Saturday, plus I need my personal time. more

Resolved Question: Would you take a full time marketing summer job that pays more than your current job, but is only for summer?

Let's say that you're a senior in college graduating in December and you've been working in data entry for the past six months at a market research firm, which doesn't want you after you graduate. However, the hours are great for the schoolyear and it is right by school. Keep in mind that this is a year-round position. Then, you're offered a summer position at a larger company that will pay you more and you'd actually be doing stuff in your major. Yet it is only for the summer. And you need a job during the school year for your last semester to pay the rent. You can only work one job, since there is not enough time in the week to put in 60 hours during normal Monday - Friday business hours of 9-5. What would you do? more

Resolved Question: New business graduate, can you give me a range of what I should ask for?

I graduated with a B.S in business w/ emphasis in Information Systems. I have had countless jobs since 1993. Jobs from telemarketing (cold calling), as an independent contractor (singing people up for JC Penny Card), assembly work, machine operation (inner and outer expanders), tools (such as working with drills), sheet metal work, dining hall/restaurant work, office work to include data entry in purchasing, helping in HR and filing employees Workman's compensation files and hiring packets (and other common office duties), sending out blue prints, mailings, and doing gopher work. I also did housekeeping for a school/church and a casino (worked on casino floor) and worked in retail as a cashier and in a warehouse, worked for UPS on the ramp (not hub), and my most recent employer was a residential treatment center as a residential advisor and a driver (vans only). I do not want to get back into that stuff! (In school, I did many projects that were team based, including project management. I also used my past employers as examples in my school work.) I know it was long-but from my wide variety of work background and with my degree (undergraduate) in business, what can I honestly ask for without looking stupid? I'm not going to ask for 60K a year for my first professional job. I am looking to get into Human Resources. What range should I ask for with my educational and work background? thanksWell, if it helps, I live in Riverside County, CA. Bad place to live! No jobs in Riverside County-all are in Irvine-too far to drive! And people do not even know where Perris is (along the 215 not the 15, north of Murrieta). I'm thinking that a range of 26K-36K is about right for someone just starting out (or at least trying to) in the PROFESSIONAL field and getting out of the "dead end" job zones. Is my guess fair? more

Resolved Question: Genuine home based business in NZ?

Can anyone tell me of a legitimate home based business in NZ that requires either no start up fee, or a very small one? I have tried Avon in the past, and barely scraped by, but I am looking for a job I can do at home, like data entry, or something I can do while my kids sleep, or around school pick ups.Laura - is your link right - when I try it I get take to a Global Gold Investement page. more

Resolved Question: Why do people think they are worth much more than they are?

Not personally, but as in the job seeking business? I'm a Human Resources Director and of course,I'm in charge of all the hiring. Last week,I held interviews for several Data Entry postions. It's not a glamourous job but it's real easy. All you have to do is take your stack of paperwork and enter it into a computer. Here are some stories of the people who I interviewed: Keep in mind that the state I live in,the minimum wage is $6.55/hr I had one young lady come in,18 years old, just out of high school, and wanted $12/hr I had a young man,23 years old,was in the military for 4 years and wanted $32,000/year Another young man,has an associates in criminal justice, wanted $40,000 a year, which is a little less than what I make(been with the company 7 years and have a Bachelors in Human Resource) You should have seen their faces when I told them that the most we could pay was $7/hr to someone with experience more

Resolved Question: MY ONLINE JOB HUNT!!?

I am a single mother of three, going back to school next semester, and I was trying to find a legitimate job online to help me pay my bills and still allow me to spend time with my boys. I don't have money to buy one of those "home-based business" offers. So if anybody has some good answers thank you in advance. It would be much appreciated.  more

Resolved Question: what do you think of my last final college argumentative essay?

ok, this is going to be my final paper of this argumentative essay i know there is more detail on the second body paragraph but i want to get you guys person view. sorry i couldn't find a link for the rest of other three article here. but you get the idea. any way. please let me how i did on this paper or evaluate my paper.thanks. also that i posted a different version of this essay in the past without the revising and the correction so I took advise and example from different viewers and I added to my essay. just to let you know. thanks again. http://amitaietzioni.org/documents/B170.pdf Working Part-Time in High school help Teenage Many students questioned themselves whether is easy to work while going to school or not? The pros and cons discussed and presented by Amitai Etzioni “The Fast Food Factories: Mcjobs Are Bad for Kids” and Michele Mangers “The Dead-End Kids” has a lengthy works that have much to say about the use and abuse of teenagers who are undertaking and working at franchises such as McDonalds and other fast food industries. They stated that those works does not give teens skills nor does it teach them about the work experience that needed for the real world. However, Dennis McLellan’s “Part-Time Work Ethic: Should Teens Go for It?” and Maureen Brown’s “Balancing Act: High School Students Making the Grade at Part-Time Jobs” disagree with them. McLellan and Brown state that part-time work has a positive influence on youth because it will benefit them as they grown up. All four article were well-thought written and all has a strong message for teens but I have to agree more with McLellan’s and Brown’s, because I believe any such experience does assist a student in their traumatic entry, out of a protective institution of school and into the real harsh business world. Therefore, I think it’s great that high school teens should work a part-time job because it’s going to prepare them for the real world by becoming more independent, learn skills need for the adulthood, and stay out of trouble. Part time jobs help student to become more independent. A lot of us students wanted to grow up and take care of our own self. We don’t want to relay upon our parents to support us for the rest of our lives. So we sought to find a job at a very young age to get the idea of how to be an adult. As I was growing up, I never ask my parents to buy me something because I knew that money wasn’t easy to make. I knew that they have to work a menial job to support us and pay the house bills and mortgages. For that reason, I couldn’t go and ask my parents for money because it didn’t seem right. Then I decided to work and earn my own money and contribute to them with a little support and save up money for the car that I was planning on buying. After two years of working at my school bus office doing paper work, computer data, and organizing. I manage to save up money, help my parents and also bought my own car. I felt so happy and proud of myself, for not only did I get a car but I had worked and earned that car all by myself. Now I didn’t have to kiss up to my friends and parents for help anymore because I’m an independent. In addition to (authors name and page)….. Part-time jobs help students learn skills that are needed for adulthood. My experience of working for the school bus was a great asset to me. Resolved Question: what do you think of my last final argumentative essay?

ok, this is going to be my final paper of this argumentative essay i know there is more detail on the second body paragraph but i want to get you guys person view. sorry i couldn't find a link for the rest of other three article here. but you get the idea. any way. please let me how i did on this paper or evaluate my paper.thanks. also that i posted a different version of this essay in the past without the revising and the correction so I took advise and example from different viewers and I added to my essay. just to let you know. thanks again. http://amitaietzioni.org/documents/B170.pdf Working Part-Time in High school help Teenage Many students questioned themselves whether is easy to work while going to school or not? However, I want to learn more skills by working in the field of adult. I want to find out what adult work is like and more importantly how do they interact and handle taught situation. Resolved Question: is there anyone doesnt feel right without kids and a spouse?

iam 33 years old and i have been married for 3 years now. even though iam married to a wonderful man and he is the best thing that has ever happend to me (besides jesus) i dont feel comfortable dieing without having atleast one child between my husband and i. my life or family dose not feel complete without atleast one child. is that wrong for me to feel that way? i feel like there is a "void" missing, a space that needs to be filled. and people do not tell me that iam 33 and iam at high risk for child and that iam too old to think about kids cuz that is a lie. if most of you would read the bible, read how jesus put a child in the womb and sarah and she was 100 years old and so was her husband abraham. people on yahoo tends to give answers to other peoples question when that is not even the question they asked in the first place so please stay focused ladies and gentlemen. is their anyone who feels the way that i do out there? i have graduated from high school, graduated from data entry school and i have took college classes for my associates degree in business management, but i had to take a brake for a while cuz it was stressing me out, putting to much pressure on me and my work. iam active in my church. i have done everything that i have wanted to do in my life except have a child. iam a daughter, sister, aunt, niece, wife, but iam not a mother yet and that is what my heart desires right now. iam wrong to feel this way?my husband and i both talk about it continuously. he says that he wants to have atleast one child with me so we are definetly on the same page. just for the record i dont party, drink, smoke, have singel girlfriends or boyfriends, i dont hang out in the streets and neither dose my husband. so i feel that when i get pregnant i will not be loosing my life but gaining more of it. the only problem that iam having now is, i keep asking myself " will i regret having this baby later", will all the responsiblity of school, and what it takes to raise children these day be too much for me and i would wish that i was motherless again"? but no matter how much of the negitive things i pull up about raising a child my sprit still wants that child. i know that it is not a piece of cake, but i have been through many touch things in my life. more

Resolved Question: Are there any 'work-at-home' positions that are not scams?

I see so many advertised and wondered if anyone could tell me if there are real positions like this and not scams of full of provisions/limitations, etc. I'm not looking to start my own business from home which seems to be what most of these 'work-at-home' internet advertisements are about. I am more interested in the positions that are 'data entry' or that employ you in their company, not help you start your own. I go to school full time and I don't want to send my toddler to day care just yet, so I've started thinking this may be a good route for me. Thank you in advance for thorough, accurate, and informative answers! more

Resolved Question: How can I get Human Resource experience while I am still in school?

Right now my resume is pretty good. I have a good variety of work experience (including customer service, data entry, management and business ownership), skills (including word, excel and lotus notes) and I even have a RE license and Realtor membership. The only thing missing was a college degree. So, I decided to finally go to school. I am majoring in Human Resource Management. Now, I would like some experience in that field while I am in school. How do I get that if they only hire HR who have a degree. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Advice needed from paralegals?

Hi, I am starting an ABA-approved para cert. program this Fall (have my BA). I have read over & over again that the employers want experience, so I am trying to find a part-time/flex job while in school. I have 2 interviews coming up. Obviously, I don't want to be TOO positive, but if I were offered each of them, which do you think would be better? One is a solo practice. He needs someone to basically be the secretary and paralegal. He was looking for someone with experience; I emailed him my resume and asked him to keep it on file. Well, I guess he liked it. He asked me some questions about my writing and ability to learn quickly, and my school curriculum. You can tell he really wants the right fit. He handles a few different areas of law for individuals. The other place has 3 attorneys. They represent business clients and deal with foreclosures and bankruptcy/creditors. They are looking for an entry-level clerk. Basic stuff, filing and data entry. Thoughts? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What do job interviewers look for on your resume, applications or cover letters?

I'm looking for a job and no one will hire me. I have excellent skills and qualification, volunteer work, business "certificate" - not degree...I send resume's out often and apply for every new job that I qualify for, but no one is calling..I got a rejection letter yesterday for a data entry job...I type like 80 wpm...I've been out of work for 6 months and it's just getting too hard to survive without a job...Could it be that I have a GED and not a high school diploma. I've had suggestions that I should start lying on my resumes but that's just not me...If I get a job by lying, everyday I go to work I would be thinking...this is the day they're going to find out...besides I think my qualifications, skills and experience should be enough where I don't have to lie...So interviewers what resume's do you trash and which ones do you call in for an interview / hire...Thanks more

I am out of options in searching a job title that best fit me with an Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/ concentration in Finance. Currently I work for a Finance company but my job title is Data Entry and there not paying well. This company is unfair with pay, people at my job making more than me, they only have a high school diploma and work with this company less than a year. I even ask my manager how are my chances in moving up the company ladder, he said my chances are slim. My manager said simply because the higher manager and owner of this company says you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. I am a firm believer of starting at the bottom to work your way up, but I've worked with this company for a year now. Please help confused and frustrated. more

Resolved Question: Intership or Work experience? What is more valuable to a corporation?

Here's the deal. I'm 27. Have my AA in Business, and will have my B.S. in Marketing at the end of the year. I have held a steady job since I was 15 years old. CVS Stock boy, Marine Corps, Medical Billing data entry clerk where i was promoted to manager after 2 years, and i held that position for 2 years. I quit my job 11/07 b/c i wanted to concentrate on school b/c i plan on continuing my education in a couple of years. I'm looking at going into the marketing field. Should I be worried that i never did an internship, or is my job history/work experience more valuable? I'm still trying to get an internship for the fall. I'm just worried that if i don't, I'm going to get screwed. more
