State sales tax holiday this weekend [17 hrs ago]

Joanne Stoy of the Norman Chamber of Commerce said Norman businesses would volunteer to participate in a tax-free weekend. Shoppers at participating stores were given discounts that were the equivalent of sales tax rates. "The Norman Retail Trade Committee started it to keep people from going to Texas," Stoy said. "Businesses would be listed on our Chamber Web site, and people got used to going there to see who was participating." Scores of businesses signed up, and the event became popular in Norman. Now that the Legislature has mandated the sales tax holiday statewide, the Norman tax-free weekend no longer generates the local buzz it once did. Still, Stoy said, shoppers are free to go wherever they want to take advantage of the three-day savings event. Home Interiors cuts another 24 jobs

Last week, the company said it would cut 83 jobs at its warehouse at 1649 Frankford Road West. Those employees, mostly production workers and fork lift operators, were offered an opportunity to move to a different shift.

This time the jobs comprise mostly of sales and management positions, including the chief financial officer and general counsel, which will be permanently cut.

"We anticipate that additional separations will occur; however, we do not currently know the date(s) on which these separations will occur," the company said in a notice to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Home Interiors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April to reorganize its business and restructure its debt. The company sells its products through 100,000 independent decorating consultants. more
