Franklin Street Properties Corp. Q2 2008 Earnings Call Transcript
While profits continued to suffer in second quarter of 2008 from our transactional businesses being negatively impacted by the broader capital market conditions, our ongoing recurring source of rental revenue from our portfolio of 27 properties continued to grow and provided $0.24 per share out of the total $0.29 per share quarterly profit total.
The property portfolio remained about 93% occupied for the quarter, with very lease turnover remaining for the balance of 2008, and approximately 11.4% lease turnover scheduled for 2009. We are obviously working on those lease turnovers as we speak. The property portfolio still has no property-secured debt associated with it, however, the company does have approximately $110.0 million drawn on its $250.0 million line of credit, with those funds having been used for property purchases directly into Franklin Street Properties, as well as a current private placement offering of a sponsored entity through our Investment Banking Group. more
Comcast second-quarter revenue up 11%
"We delivered solid results in the second quarter of 2008, highlighting the strength of our businesses even in a challenging economic environment," Brian L. Roberts, the company's chief executive officer and chairman, said in a statement. In the morning conference call, Roberts said Comcast's businesses were "fundamentally strong yet resilient."
Shares rose 89 cents to close at $20.07 today.
Advertising revenue fell 2 percent in the second quarter because of weak auto and housing sectors, but phone revenue increased 50 percent. The company has 5.6 million phone customers, making it the nation's fourth-largest phone company.
The second quarter is typically a weak period for video additions in the cable industry because of college students and travelers canceling service. more
Business Briefs
Last month Hollinger, a key entity in Black's former business empire, said it was so short of money that it had decided against filing the audited annual financial statements required of publicly traded companies. The company is now under court supervision. Black is serving a 6 1/2-year sentence in a Florida prison after being convicted last year of three counts of fraud and one obstruction charge.
OIL-RICH ARCTIC COULD TRIGGER DISPUTES
A new study suggests the equivalent of 112 billion barrels of oil lies undiscovered beneath the sea ice and frigid waters of North America's Arctic, adding new urgency to the debate over control of those resources. The report released yesterday by the U.S. Geological Survey has for the first time put some hard numbers behind the energy potential of the North. more
Incumbent faces challenger for Ward 2
Prematurely forcing tax-paying viable businesses to move away was counterproductive. Citizens have rightfully questioned the council's ability to make proper use of the city's money.
Council proposed a city income tax on top of an area high property tax rate. This additional tax would have negatively impacted the city's ability to attract new residents and businesses.
What do you like about the City of Ypsilanti?
I am a lifelong Ypsilanti resident and concerned citizen with deep roots in the Community. Both of my sons were educated in the Ypsilanti Public School system, and are graduates of our local Universities, U of M and EMU. I love the culture, diversity, friendly neighborhoods, restaurants etc. Besides, Its home! I was born in the "Old Beyer Hospital" in 1950. My dad walked the beat for Ypsi P.D. more
Tall Ships took wind from sails of businesses
The Victoria Tall Ships Festival this past June may prove to be a multimillion-dollar boon to Victoria's tourism industry, but not all local businesses were benefiting from the hordes of tourists mobbing the city that weekend.
Some businesses say tourists were physically barred from getting to their locations, while others found people spent their afternoons at the festival instead of visiting other attractions.
"Both times the tall ships have been here [in 2005 and 2008] I've lost between $3,000 and $5,000," said Ian Stothart, owner of Naturally Salty Excursions whale-watching tours. "It's a huge hardship for me."
