Businesses travellers trading down at hotels

Budget hotel chain Premier Inn has seen substantial growth in corporate bookings, suggesting that business travellers are trading-down as the UK economy falters.

The group, which is owned by Whitbread, claimed sales through its Business Account Card increased 48% in June and 337 new business customers signed up to the scheme.

The company also said 1,238 new businesses, mainly from the UK, had successfully applied for a corporate account.

Chief executive of Whitbread, Alan Parker, said Premier Inn was experiencing “significant growth in corporate account usage" suggesting that business customers are “reigning in on corporate travel expenditure".

Parker added: “The smart business traveller is opting for a high-quality hotel room at a much lower price."

Hulshof pledges economic growth at Cape campaign tour stop

"This whole tour has been about taking the pulse of all types of businesses," Hulshof said. "We have to have a vibrant, business-friendly environment to grow here."

Local area unemployment statistics show that the state has lost 32,000 jobs in the past 12 months. Additionally, a report released today by the Alliance for American Manufacturing showed that between 2001 and 2007, Missouri has lost 45,400 jobs to China.

Hulshof said the state has the ability to compete with other countries, but businesses must find ways to reinvent themselves. Otherwise, Missouri may lose out on coveted jobs.

On the issue of megaprojects — costly initiatives that attract a great amount of public attention because of substantial impacts on communities — Hulshof said they are necessary to attract major industry to the state. more

I have an interview today and Im dreading the question "And what type of salary are you looking for?" Its for a front desk position at this very nice hotel, its not a chain but its waterfront and pretty upscale, just to give you an idea they offer each guest a complimentary bottle of wine upon their arrival and their rooms are really condominiums with 2 floors and they are not cheap. I'll have to travel about 20-25min. and pay for parking. I'll have my associates degree in business this spring and I have 2 years office experience yet no hotel experience. I've tried the different salary calculators online but the amount varies so much. Can anyone point me in a good direction? Thanks more

What are the best schools to look at? Cheapest? I'm interested in getting an associates degree and then a bachelor's degree in business administration. First of all, sorry this is long but I really need some advice!! Please read this and help me... I graduated last year from a university and got a bachelor of economics degree. Given the economy during the time, I couldn't find a job so I went to a temp agency. I ended up working in a couple factories over the last 6 and a half months. I don't mind the work at all, because it's the people who make it worth getting up every day. During this time I ended up going back to college for an associates degree in health care business services. I'm doing it because I'm struggling with trying to find what I want to do with my life. I'm taking 3 classes this semester, and I figure once I'm done with these 3, I'll be able to tell if I want a job in this field or not. The classes are somewhat hard so far, I have to memorize medical codes and learn insurance principles. Recently a friend of mine wanted me to come to a martial arts class. So I went one day just to humor him. When I went, I spoke to the instructor and talked about my situation. He ended up offering for me to come to his factory for an interview and seeing if he could get me a full time job. I went today and it's looking like I'll get the job, and it would be full time. I am so surprised by how this is happening. My problem is, I don't know what to do. I'm 22 years old and I live with my parents, going to school part time, working part time. Either of the factories I've been sent to could eventually hire me, and I'd be perfectly fine with that. I was actually offered a job a few months ago at the first factory I was at but I couldn't at the time, because I was taking classes on campus. (I plan on taking them online from now on) If I get sent back to that factory, I could very well get hired there and that's actually what I want to happen. There's no guarantee it will. So my question is, should I take this job now and get to working full time right away? I would be doing basic production work but also working with a computer, which I haven't done at my other jobs. Or should I pass this job offer up and keep my life the way it is? I would have more time for school and I would eventually get hired somewhere, probably in the summer. I would work at the factory until I'm done with school, which is about 2 years if I stick with the program. Until summer, I would probably only be working 30 hours a week unless more temp jobs open up. What would be the best thing for me to do?I'm currently working in a cheese factory. more

In 2001, with an Associates degree from a community college, I enrolled in the University of Phoenix, and in 2004 completed my degree in business. I regret having attended U of P. At the time I didn't realize what a poor reputation it had. It has not helped me at all. I wonder if I should remove it from my resume when applying for work. With my good grades from the community college I could have gone to a local university, but with working full-time and raising kids the online model appealed to me. If I had to do it over I would take one class at a time from a reputable university and take longer to complete it. At the time I wanted to complete it as quickly as possible. What poor judgment on my part! Maybe I should redo my undergrad degree... I am so embarrassed with my U of P degree! more

I am searching for an online degree program that will allow me to go into a career as a Record Producer, Video Producer, Multimedia Artist etc. Something creative dealing with elements of Music and/or Video. Preferably a Bachelor's but an Associate's could work. Full Sail offers a program like this but they lack regional accreditation and are uber-expensive. I am a non-traditional adult student who hates being inside a classroom. Who hates going anywhere really but I really want/need a degree. I don't have any interests so I'm looking at distance learning bachelor's degree programs offered from B&M universities in my state and it isn't much. I want to get back into designing a car, I say this because i designed my first car in the 9th grade, But being so young i didn't know about a patent, and the company sent me a letter to sign saying that i sent this design for no obligation. My family told me not to sign, and well they still used my design. So now the world is riding my design. I hate school, but I want a 4 year degree. I was at a community college and graduated with my associate degree. It took me 3 years. My GPA wasn't terrible at 3.3, but always felt stressed and didn't feel college was for me. My mom nor dad went to college, and my sister dropped out of high school. As a result, I feel that I am just not born to do this. Although I do not consider myself stupid, I always have a hard time in my classes mainly because they never interest me. I am pursuing a degree in business management, but I desire to become an airline pilot. As much as I would like to get an aviation degree, they are just way to expensive. I attended AIU Online and I received an associates degree there in Business Administration. I am now going back to get my Bachelors in Business Administration. The reason I went back to AIU was because my credits would've transferred to UNC-Greenboro in NC however all off them wouldn't so in turn I went back to AIU. For my associates they had a SACS accreditation now they have a NCU accreditation they say which is still regionally accredited. I called the local technical school in my area and they said that it was still nationally accredited so my degree is legit! But i'm reading all of these rumors about the college being Bogus! Hi Guys, I hope you can help me out on this. Qualified people working in the healthcare field are free to tell it as it is too! I just finished up an MBA and a Masters in Strategic Marketing, but am moving back to the States next year because as a native English speaker in France (husband is French—but he can make the move with me as he works in software) since 3 years despite my qualifications, I just couldn't advance in my career—after a year and a half I finally landed a position as an intern, but with no job offer in sight I am aiming to get into the health care sector as it looks promising in terms of careers and career progression. So should I go ahead and do a Masters in Health Administration or just do an Associates since I already have general business competencies? I’ve read that the industry is pretty competitive and that a Masters in Health related studies only qualifies you for an entry level position –which is fine by me! I just want to start working again! Am willing to pay my dues! I would be doing it online from University of Phoenix(expensive!!!) while I hopefully will have a small job in NY or NJ to pay my bills and my tuition (per credit of course!!) I'm married, my husband is almost done with his Bachelor's so I'm getting ready to start back. I live in a farming community and even if we move 4 hours any direction(which is the max we are talking about) we will still be around farmland. I really enjoy business and english. Hi I am a former teacher(bachelor's in history, minor spanish and associates degree in business) that has taught spanish, history and esl in the united states. Last year i moved to mexico and fell in love with the country and i've heard about other people going over there to teach english. I recently met this guy online about a few months back. he wants to start a language school in the queretaro/celaya area. I was intrigued by the idea and i was really interested. While i do want to do it i am a bit hesitant since i have never done this before. He said that he would help me get my fm3(not pay for it but help me through the process) and he already has a room rented out for the beginning and he is even getting computers for the students to learn on. He says that celaya is a hotbed for learning english since all the college graduates have to do it before they graduate. I just don't want to go there blindingly accepting something that may or not be legit. I have always dreamed of living in southern mexico as the northern border is not that great. The pay is 8000 pesos and if that's not enough he talked to his buddy at a cyber cafe that will hire me for another 3000 pesos..so 11000 total. My questions are 1. Does anyone know anything about the celaya/queretaro area? 2. How hard is it to get students to teach? 3. Is it hard to get a fm3 visa with independiente status so i can freelance? I plan to double major so I can get myself on the fast track in life. ****before anybody say anything or start something with me about bragging and other crazy stuff, please hear me out first, i dislike it when people make cruel statements when they don't even know the person**** At first I wanted to double major in Art and Computer Science, but the classes doesn't fit well together. My father wants me to focus on something other than art and cuz of my interest in business and experience in online marketing I think I'mma work on majoring in business, but........ I know for sure it's impossible for me to triple major so I want to get certify for both business and art, then major on Computer Science. This way, I will have a more clearer surface on what to do with all my skills later in the future. I know that just because you're interested in something doesn't mean you have to major in it. What you major into might benifit your interest in other ways unexpectly later in life. so..... what do you think is best for a guy like me to do with these few subjects on mind? *****Entrepreneur, Graphic Designing/Photography, Ethic Hacking, Computer Forensics***** Right now I'm a self-taught graphic designer. What I do is retouching, flyers, logos and so forth. Before anybody says anything about my educational background. I have already done a few designs for 2 companies so far and retouched/designs countless of photos/designs. Along with work experience on the subject I also have alittle work experience in online marketing. I'm also a computer literate starting at a very early age in life. Around age 9. I'm currently 19 now. .............should I Double Major in Business and Computer Science or Double Major in Art and Computer Science, then get a certify in business or Major in Computer Science, then get a certificate for business and art or Major in Art, then certify for computer science and business all of this majoring stuff is for an Associate Degree only* I already schduled my courses myself according to the requirements if I double major in Business and Computer Science. If I were to continue with that schdule as plan, then I would earn a business degree in 2 years and I'mma have to take 1 extra semester of classes to earn my Computer Science Degree. I'm looking for a way to graduate earlier though with more options and better pay with the degree I'mma be having in 2 years. Early as in within a year + 1 semester or within two years time.* No extra semester***** For college certificates, must I renew certificates now and then or not. Is their a due date for these type of certifications? (college certificates) What's better, certifcate or degree? I am nineteen years old and I was a very poor student. I graduated late by half-a-credit and I work full-time as a Drive-Thru operator at a restaurant nearby. I'm looking into online colleges and AIU looks like a good choice. I'm currently talking to them about applying but their degree for Associate of Arts in Business is $22,500. I sure as hell cannot pay that much over a two year time. I'm looking into scholarships and grants right now but I have a lousy school record; no clubs, sports, and poor grades. The only thing I may have going for me is my heritage; I'm half Native American--Navajo but I doubt that alone will help much, if at all. Am I just living in a made up world where I am able to attain an Associates degree? more

Resolved Question: Should I pursue a Master's in Hospitality Management through a part-time program?

I graduated a little over one year ago with a BA in Political Science. Considering my career options, I went to law school and just finished my first year. I hated it! As I look back, I don't regret my first year of law school (except for tuition) because I would not have known unless I tried. Now I am pursuing a career in restaurant management (to get experience) with the hope of opening my own restaurant in the distant future. Because I do not have a degree in business, management, or hospitality, I am considering getting further education, specifically in restaurant management. I've found university certificates, associate degrees, bachelor degrees, and master's degrees in restaurant/hospitality management through online programs of several state universities. Since I already have a bachelor degree, I am wondering if getting any of those degrees or a certificate would be financially worthwhile and benefit my career. Obviously, a certificate would take the least amount of time and cost the least amount of money. A masters degree would obviously take more time and cost much more money. If anyone who has worked in restaurant management has any advice on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! more

I am 19 weeks pregnant with my 5th child and recently filed for divorce. I did this because I warned my abusive/alcoholic husband well over a year ago that he needed to either prioritize family or get out. He did not. The baby (a girl, I found out yesterday) was a surprise, and he made it clear that he did not want it. He tried to get me to have an abortion. Now he is asking for DNA testing, which is ridiculous, because as the only responsible person in the house (he has been unemployed for over a year), I am working full time and going to school full time and could not possibly have found the time to have an affair. Some people think that I should wait until after the baby is born before I divorce him- as if he would change his mind and decide that he suddenly wants to behave like a father instead of a bachelor, but if the last four didn't make that happen, why would this one? If I decline DNA testing, I would not get child support for the baby, but I would also not have to share custody with him, which would protect her from his abuse. I have a restraining order against him for now, but I don't know what will happen as she gets older. She will want to know about her father, and her brothers will probably tell her more than I want to, but I can't just stick my head in the sand and pretend he doesn't exist. Or can I? I will have my associates degree in business 19 days before the baby is due- I go to school online. I am hopeful that I won't even need his help financially or emotionally, having already become accustomed to not having it. There is so much more to this story, but I need to know: Am I being fair to the baby?The oldest two children were by my previous husband, who was killed in a car accident, but we were married when they were very young. more

I found a University that I'm interested in, but will possibly see if I find another that offers Online Degrees (I have 2 small children and got laid off unfortunately). I'm trying to take this as an opportunity to start on a degree. I've decided that Accounting is the way to go. In my previous jobs I've always worked with the Accounting Dept & also HR. I'm not sure of how to start or where to start looking. Do I begin by looking for Grants/financial aid? Or do I begin with searching for a school that offers Online courses? I recently enrolled in an online school for an Associates in business for general studies, but now I'm starting to doubt my decision. The reason I wanted to go back to school was to be able to get a job with higher pay. I don't want to stay at the job I'm at forever. I'm kind of interested in health-care, somewhere along the lines of an X-Ray Technician or Medical Assistant. I'm just not sure if an associates in business if going to be a secure choice. Since it's not an specific degree, I'm worried that I'll waste 2 years and 20,000 for me to work at a place where I'm going to be paid the same as I am now. I did a little research on google about X-Ray Techs but am having a lot of trouble finding local schools I can go to for that field. I went online to my community college's website and i saw the program requirements and course descriptions in my major which is administrative assistant under office technology. I saw the requirements for an associate's degree and the classes it recommends i take are business english, intro to microcomputers,intermediate computer keyboarding,and a ge course from social and behavioral sciences and i chose intro to sociology, and also an elective which i chose bookkeeping. In addition to these courses i have to take the courses that i scored in my placement assesment test which are arithmetic fundamentals (math that prepares you for college level math but doesn't count for college credit, i have to take three course before i get to college level) also i have to take freshmen composition. do you think this sounds right or is too much? more

I’m confused about college. I am going to school right now for an Associate’s of Arts so I can transfer into a different college and get my Bachelor’s in Business Administration. Now, in addition to that, I really want to go to school for a Cinematography degree. However, I don’t really understand how to approach that. I was originally thinking I would get my Associate’s of Arts, transfer to the business school, then while I wrap up my Bachelor’s, take online courses for Film. That way, when I was done at business school, I could go to a film school and get a bachelor’s in that as well. However, I don’t fully grasp how they will judge my grades for admission into a new college or how I’ll receive financial aid. I also have no clue who I should talk to — the counselor I spoke to to schedule courses at my current college is more useless than a bag of dog crap. more

I graduated from Bryant & Stratton last year. Still have not found a job. Husband picked up a second job so he works from 8a.m. until 9:30 p.m. That makes me feel like CRAP! When I can't even find 1 job. So now it's time to do something different make a change. I'm 25 and the degree I have is an Associates in Human Resources Specialist. I know I need a BA to get a job in the HR Field. So what would you do? 1) Go back to college.. I've been accepted to Roberts Wesleyan College a really great College, to get my BA in Business Administration for 2 in a half years(while hubby is working 2 jobs all this time) 2) Go to online College at Bryant & Stratton so I can keep my availability open and still look for a job to pull my weight in our marriage financially. (They have a Bachelors of Business Admini degree online) 3) Take up a trade like CNA in nursing or Pharmacy Technician which is 2400.00 for the classes. (Which I would hate to do because I have no interest in anything nursing at all, but I have to do what I have to make money) More info: my Husband is the best he wants me to do what makes me happy. He is willing to work both jobs while I go to school, but I'm not feeling great about myself not helping out with an income. Were young and married and we want things like a bigger place, to start a family, and to go on vacation. It would be easier to do with both of us working. We have money saved and live in a great area and a SUV and a car. So our bills are about 1800.00 a month. I'm just really confused on what to do! Im a bit confused on what I need to take on a four year degree level (bachelor's) for the career path i want to get into. Basically my goal is to get into computer networking, and specialize in the security aspect. Engineering a system from the ground up, knowing how to use and configure all the hardware, to implementing and maintaining on the software side, to protection of the system in general/anti-hacker. As of now, the end all be all kind of job id want is working for like the CIA or NSA doing networking and general communications security. A pattern I've noticed in terms of employment is nearly everyone wants to see a Bachelors degree, so Im considering pushing up to this level. But I'm having a difficult time narrowing down what major to pursue. The two universal ones I seem to find are Computer Science and MIS/CIS The problem is neither of these really seem to be going down the path im looking for? Computer science seems to be full of the programming/engineering/intense math side. It feels like one large general degree that dabbles a little into everything with a major emphasis on programming, which i really have no interest in to such an extent. MIS/CIS seems to be focused more on the business aspect, with light courses in some entry level programing and networking ect. Basically nothing seems to be providing an in depth education in computer networking on the degree side. There are tons of very good certifications, particularly from Cisco (and im already working on CCNA), or CISSP, ETC, but this doesn't help me when an employment requirement is a bachelors degree (and most the time they don't even care what kind as long as its some form of bachelors). So what am I missing? Am I looking at the wrong Majors here or what? And if so what is it that I'd be looking for? And furthermore, what real universities (not online schools or university of pheonix type deals) have the programs im seeking for a 4 year bachelor degree? more

I want to be making at least a mil a year at the height of my career. I about to graduate college with a degree in finance and made about 120k profit (several hundred revenue) in about a little over a year trading stocks and marketing online but only after several years of losing money hand over fist. Im not sure if i should continue these small businesses or try to get an MBA from a better school ill graduate with a B.S. from an ok business school but not one anyone has heard of and get a CFA and try to work my way up in finance. My grades are not the best because i split my focus between school and these small businesses i have just barely a 3.0. Continuing both is really out of the question i just dont have it in me for 3-4 to 4 more years of the stress associate with focusing on both. Im at a crossroads this is my last year and need to make a push for either boosting my GPA or making my business more constantly profitable. more

I got my Associates degree in Business Administration from a community college. I am thinking of going to Ashford University online to get my bachelors degree in Accounting but I have heard some good and bad things about getting a degree online. So I was wondering since Ashford is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and so is New Mexico State University, could I possibly take the majority of the classes at Ashford and transfer them and take maybe three of four classes at NMSU to get a degree there?
