ILA 2008: A model business

ILA is displaying various aircraft from Boeing to Airbus jets but the most prolific manufacturer in the world is displaying a massive collection.
Model manufacturers Herpa produces almost half a million aircraft a year working in close collaboration with the manufacturers and the airlines.

The highly detailed scaled down models are used as promotional tools as well as being popular giveaways and collector items.

“We also produce exclusive models which are only produced for airline events but often end up on ebay at a fancy price," says Thomas Gunsel from the company's marketing department.

Girl, 11, escapes attempted abduction

The girl said the man was sitting in a car on The Boulevarde near the intersection of Croydon Street staring at her before the incident, police said.

"He pulled up near the girl and told her to get into his car," a police statement said.

"The girl ran in a southerly direction on Croydon Street and turned left into Oneata Street where she hid in a garden until she could no longer see the man and his car."

The girl then ran about 200 metres and sought refuge in a nearby home.

The man is described as Middle Eastern and overweight in appearance with grey hair and a black moustache.

Seamless tube unintended victim of steel export duty

Already, export of seamless tube is not a high margin business because the Chinese government provides a 13% export subsidy to the local industry which is India's main competitor in export markets.

“The Chinese manufacturers would drub us if export duty is not withdrawn because the price differential between their products and ours could then be as high as 23%," points out Mr Duda. Obviously, the Indian industry was looking at notvery-high margin but high volume export business.

Seamless tubes have a variety of uses. They are used in boilers, bearings, hydraulic cylinders, generic engineering equipment and oil exploration. . more

Travel Agency Business Plan Questions asked

Resolved Question: I'm wanting to move overseas, where do I start for help?

I'm planning on moving overseas, probably to England, but I'm not sure what kind of agency or person to contact for this type of thing. Travel agencies are only for business and vacations, not for someone who wants to make a permanent move. Some information and advice is needed. more

Resolved Question: Am I wrong? Is my canadian boyfriend stingy?

Happy New Year to everyone. Today I want to ask you whether he is stingy or I am wrong. Judge it, please. Any opinion is welcome, as long as they have good heart to answer. Sorry in advance, I am not English speaker, so it may not be good English. (My boyfriend is Canadian, middle 30's. He has his own business, always busy traveling. I met him in 2008 late May.When we go out together, he pays all.) I feel he is stingy. For example when he calls me, he will hang up the phone intentionally and lead me to call him back. Some are after 7,8 seconds talk and hang up suddenly, others are like one-ring and hang up before I answer. Even after I told him to stop that, he continued. Such things often happened. That's why I sometimes don't like to pick up his call, it makes me feel bad. Then it's better to call him than pick up calls. Another example, now I live in a kind of guest house (like dormitory). No man admitted to enter even brothers. Oh I must explain this first. We planned to buy an apartment with a view to marriage in the first place, it was in late April 2009. He said he will get one in cash as long as the price is within a set budget. That’s why I contacted a real estate agency, visited 8 apartments while he was in abroad to secure the fund for it. Unfortunately he never came back… He had postponed return date 4,5times even though he said each time “Please believe me this is final”. After several delay, he said he invested most of his earnings in business, so we must wait till get funds again. It was maybe late October or early November. Then I suggested to him to rent an apartment for now, to start living together and get married. You know, money is the first consideration to do something in real life. So I told him to send money first for securing apartment, then he started worrying about deposit and key money. Of course I must avoid unnecessary expenses, so I was looking for one with no key money and refundable security deposit. Anyway he didn’t send money eventually, even after I found “No key money, No deposit” apartment. It makes great sense to think he is not interested in living together and marriage. What’s worse is that he started to say he will stay at my place in secret! I told him that I can’t do that, you can’t come, because I don’t want to break rules and cause a thing, so if we live together, we should make a contract for 2 in another place. Then he said “That’s bullshit”, cursed at me and hung up the phone. I was speechless. If he’s a student, I can understand his remarks a little bit. Why can middle-aged man say that? The upshot is that he won’t come to Tokyo unless I all prepare the apartment for two. I can’t help thinking he just expects a free ride, doesn’t want to spend money. On the other hand, he keeps saying that man is meant to take proper care and responsibility of his spouse all the time, also keep saying that his dream is to live together as soon as possible to start enjoying best marriage and family life with me. (Almost copy and paste) What is responsibility, what is proper care? Marriage is not play house. Of course there are various types of marriage these days, But I am a quite typical and conservative Japanese-minded person. I told him, I want to be a housewife after marriage. In my view, it is husband’s obligation to take care of wife and children both mentally and financially. We formed a consensus through discussions when I met him in Bangkok in mid-September. He has been saying that he’ll do when the time is right. One year has passed. Time is now. If someone doesn’t do it now, someone never will. Honestly, I don’t know what he really wants to do with me. If he needs time to stay single or time to work alone as in past years, I can give him, it doesn’t matter at all. The problem is this. He has been always about to do, but has never yet begun it. He’s all mouth. To my regret I fully believed his words. If I were man who’s thinking about marriage, I will introduce her to my family first, buy or rent an apartment within few months at the latest, also set the date for wedding. So, I can’t see any effort or forms of love nor seriousness from him. How is my opinion very different from your countries ladies one? Let me know. Thanks for reading. more

Resolved Question: Debt collectors calling for a settled debt, any recourse?

Beginning two weeks ago I began receiving calls from an agency stating that I needed to call them back immediately. After two or three calls, I finally spoke with someone and realized that it was a collections agency. They were demanding payment for an outstanding balance of roughly $550 at a radiology clinic from February 2006. I was completely puzzled by this because A) so much time had passed and B) I was pretty sure I had paid that years ago. I asked them to send me a letter in writing that they were attempting to collect a debt. They denied my request and said that I should contact the clinic for details on the debt. I was traveling on business but made plans to contact the clinic as soon as I returned to my office. In the course of the next week, the collections agency called me at least two additional times, sometimes as late as 8:00PM at night. I kept telling them that I needed to talk to the right person at the clinic before I could commit to any type of payment arrangement on the $550 balance. Finally I was able to speak to someone at the clinic this morning that handled their "delinquent accounts." I asked why I was being contacted all of the sudden about this account nearly 4 years after the fact and she explained that they had recently switched collections agencies from company A to company B. She was not very pleasant and insisted that this was an outstanding balance and she was sorry that company A did not make the proper attempts to contact me to resolve this debt but that I was still responsible for the payment and that the clinic, through company B, would be taking legal action to collect this balance. I asked for a history and she rudely rattled off a timeline of letters that were sent to an old address and some calls that were made around the time of February 2007. I told her that it was absurd that I was being contacted out of the blue after so much time had passed and they were demanding immediate payment. I asked why it had not been covered by insurance and she said that the total balance had been somewhere around $1200 and that insurance had covered roughly $700, leaving me with the $500 deductible. I told her that I was certain I had paid this and she rudely repeated the timeline and insisted that the balance was still outstanding. Finally, after placing me on hold several times, I was transferred to someone else at the clinic who deals with delinquent accounts and the collections agencies. We went through all of the same stuff that I had discussed with the previous lady. She too insisted that this was an outstanding debt and that company B would likely be taking legal actions to collect. When I kept insisting on more details regarding the history, she finally put me on hold to contact company A. She came back several minutes later and her demeanor had changed completely. The debt had been settled in full several years ago with Company A and when they recently switched agencies they had mistakenly sent it as an outstanding debt to Company B. Obviously, I'm glad to know that this is finally resolved and I do not in fact owe $500+ dollars. My question is, do I have any recourse against the clinic or the agencies for harassing me and attempting to collect this debt that essentially did not even exist? But isn't it a violation to not send a written notice within 5 days of initial contact? more

Resolved Question: Why the dishonesty with travel agencies?

Now I have nothing against the Chinese-- I've been studying Chinese for 6 yrs and am planning my second trip there. I finally worked out, after months of research, a trip to Tibet and I made a payment to the travel agency. Suddenly AFTER the payment is made, they're saying our trip may not be direct to Lhasa from Beijing after all,and may cost us $100 more. They're saying if we cancel now, there's a penalty .... But I paid them with the understanding that the quote was complete. Now they're jacking up the price ... This seems to be a common thing in China, and it gives me a very bad feeling. Is this what to expect in business dealings in China or is this just one bad experience? more

Resolved Question: What happened to the Arab refugees from Israel?

In the wake of the War of Independence in 1948, when Israel was invaded by the armies of five of its Arab neighboring countries, 860,000 Jewish refugees fled from Arab countries to Israel, and, at about the same time, about 70% of the Arab population of Mandatory Palestine fled to Arab states from the portion of Palestine that is now Israel. The Arab exodus was almost entirely because of the actions of Arab leaders and not because of anything the Israeli Jews did. Estimates of the total number who left range from 540,000 to 720,000. Not all of those who fled their homes departed Mandatory Palestine itself. By some estimates, 45% of them simply crossed into the eastern sector of the country occupied by Jordan's Arab Legion. Around 5% crossed the Jordan River and entered the Hashemite Kingdom itself. About 30%, who originally had encamped in the south, fled toward the Gaza area. Nearly 15% sought refuge in Lebanon, another 5% in Syria, with smaller groups traveling on to Iraq and Egypt -- and later to the Persian Gulf sheikhdoms. This population exchange mirrored far larger population movements following the end of World War II, which involved millions of Hindus and Muslims in India and Pakistan, as well as Poles, Germans and many other nationalities in Central and East Europe. These population exchanges were resolved through the integration of all refugees into the host states. While Israel absorbed the Jewish refugees, the Arab states refused to allow such resettlement and integration of their Palestinian brethren, preferring instead to exploit the Palestinian refugees to serve their own political agendas. Since there has been no integration of the refugees with the populations of the countries to which they fled, the current "refugees" are the children and mostly grandchildren of those who left Israel during the 1948 War of Independence. In 1949, Israel offered to admit 100,000 Arab refugees, with the understanding that their repatriation would be linked to meaningful peace negotiations. Although 35,000 Arabs eventually returned under a family reunification plan, further implementation of the offer was suspended in the 1950's, after it became clear that the Arab states steadfastly refused to consider Israel's peace overtures, preferring instead to maintain a state of war with and economic boycott against Israel. In contrast, as a gesture of goodwill, Israel unilaterally released the frozen bank accounts and safe deposits of Arab refugees. In 1973, Khaled al-'Azm, who served as Prime Minister of Syria in 1948 and 1949, published his memoirs in Beirut. He includes the following: We have brought destruction upon a million Arab refugees, by calling upon them and pleading with them to leave their lands, their homes, their work and their business, and we have caused them to be barren and unemployed though each one of them had been working and qualified in a trade from which he could make a living. In addition, we accustomed them to begging for hand-outs and to suffice with what little the UN organisation would allocate them. Following the war, the Arab countries consistently refused to take steps necessary to improve the lives of the Palestinian refugees. In early 1950, the UN General Assembly established the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, with a budget of $54 million. UNRWA was charged with the task of employing the Palestinians on projects in the Arab states in which they resided. It was an explicit expectation of the program that within 18 months most of these refugees would be as self-supporting as their Arab neighbors, and relief handouts could be ended. However, when UNRWA officials initiated talks with the Arab governments, they encountered an uncompromising refusal to cooperate with any plan designed for economic integration. Arab leaders argued that Paragraph Eleven of General Assembly Resolution 194 of December 1948 guaranteed the refugees the right to return to their homes, and that they could not participate in any scheme that might compromise such a right. In fact, the Arab states themselves had voted unanimously against the resolution, since it envisaged peace negotiations with Israel. The refugee issue accordingly served as a useful obstacle to future discussions and as an effective lien on the world's conscience. By the end of 1950, as a result, no more than 10,000 of the refugees were employed. Throughout the 1950's, UNRWA put forward additional plans to resettle and rehabilitate the Palestinian refugees. Like the earlier plan, these too were rejected by the Arab countries, individually and through the Arab League. By 1959, UNRWA was obliged to report that its rehabilitation fund, created in 1950 to provide homes and jobs for Palestinian refugees outside the camps, had been boycotted by the Arabs. The fund had set a goal of $250 million, but after three years only $7 million had been spent, and a further $28 million lay unused in the fund. Thereafter, a small part of more

Resolved Question: Does London's Heathrow need a 3rd runway?

Give valid reasons for your opinion. ARGUMENTS FOR THE THIRD RUNWAY • Heathrow needs more capacity Heathrow runs at close to 100% capacity. With demand for air travel predicted to double in a generation, Heathrow will not be able to cope without a third runway, say those in favour of the plan. Because the airport is over-stretched, any problems which arise cause knock-on delays. Heathrow, the argument goes, needs extra capacity if it is to reach the levels of service found at competitors elsewhere in Europe, or it will be overtaken by its rivals. Passenger numbers may be down as recession takes hold, but proponents argue we should not base transport decisions on the bad times, but look ahead to future upturn in demand. • The third runway will boost the economy The third runway will be worth £7bn a year to the economy, according to airport owner BAA. Some say a third runway is the only solution to the congestion at Heathrow. Tens of thousands of jobs will be created - in construction in the short term - and for business and in tourism over the longer term. Lack of expansion at Heathrow would threaten London's position as trading capital of the world, throttling the very international links Britain was built on. Business leaders argue London deserves and needs an airport of international quality. • Pollution concerns are overplayed Those pushing for the new runway argue that pollution caused by the airport will be closely monitored. Meeting targets is a condition of expansion. By 2020, when the runway would be completed, new technology will mean planes are much quieter and less polluting. The Airbus A380 already demonstrates that planes are moving in this direction. If the runway were not built, the argument runs, there would be no cut in emissions. Flights would simply move to other European airports. CO2 would not be reduced, merely transferred elsewhere to the UK's detriment. • There is no alternative Building a brand new airport in the Thames Estuary is not feasible according to those in favour of the third runway. Transport Minister Geoff Hoon says lack of transport infrastructure, fears of 'bird strike', cost and lack of available finance all make the project prohibitive. ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE THIRD RUNWAY • We need to reduce, not increase, emissions Heathrow generates 50% of UK aviation emissions. This makes 6% of total emissions, according to Department for Transport figures. With a third runway and as the UK as a whole cuts emissions, Heathrow's contribution to overall UK emissions would rise significantly by 2050, some calculate to as much as 50% of total. A third runway could mean an extra 200,000 flights a year over London. Why should aviation capacity be increased indefinitely? At a time when most accept the need for emission cuts, say opponents, should we not stick with the capacity we have and allow market forces to price out inessential flyers? • Health of Londoners at risk A Greater London Authority (GLA) report suggested Heathrow would even now breach the EU regulations on levels of Nitrous Oxide due to come into force in 2010. Extra flights would only make this worse. Even the Environment Agency admits that with a third runway, Heathrow would breach these limits. The GLA study also found that the airport would breach noise pollution limits as a result of the extra flights. • Economic case overstated Many of the new passengers the extra runway would bring would be transit passengers. According to former BA boss Bob Ayling they would spend little or nothing in London, only boosting airline profits. According to Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the government, the runway would over time come to be seen as a 'white elephant'. Long before investment in it were repaid, demand for flying will have fallen away as pressure to reduce carbon increases and competition with other forms of travel grows. The downturn is already forcing people to find substitutes for air travel. This pattern will continue, he suggests. • Impact on the local area Transport infrastructure around Heathrow already struggles. The extra demands would create gridlock. To make way for the runway, Sipson - a village of 700 houses - would be demolished and hundreds of acres of greenbelt land would be swallowed up. • Alternatives For historical reasons, Heathrow is badly located. It is the only major airport with flight paths over a large capital city, for instance. Some, like London Mayor Boris Johnson, believe this is a perfect opportunity to start again and propose a new airport in the Thames Estuary. Planes would approach and leave over water, reducing the impact of noise and the airport could operate 24 hours a day. Resolved Question: I have a business and am not sure what type of legal form of Ownership (Partnership, Inc, or LLC) I should use?

I have a travel agency and am planning on becoming LLC. Honestly I have a basic idea of what each of these ownership entail but would like to get additional information. I am the single owner with no partners. I am a staff of 5 and growing. Let me know if you have a site or if you can clarify these types of Legal Form of Ownerships. If you need more information please leave me an email where I can contact you! Also which of these should I apply for that I can benefit the most with my taxes. Again I am relatively new to this but this has been my dream to have a business. I just want to make sure I am protecting myself and my agents. If you have a sites or a place you recommend so I can understand how to make the most of my taxes. Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Online vaction planning e-business?

So after 4 years of schooling and 2 years of work force i've decided to leave my career in Emergency services behind. Its a demanding job emotionally and physically. My question is i'd like to start an e-business that acts as a travel agency. I'd like to help people plan their vacations and honeymoons so make sure everything is taken care of. I'd like also to do the actual booking and planning of a vacation for people who don't have the time to plan it. Is there any sites that could help me get started? Is there even a demand for this type of business right now? more

Resolved Question: Would any English native speaker help me with this? Thanks a lot!?

Are they correct? If not, how can i change? What should a local guide do after the group has departed? 1. He should complete the paper work and deal with any unfinished business according to the requirements of the relevant regulation. 2. He should submit the bills to the accounting department and settle the account within the given time. 3. Make a tour group file, and put some data in order according to the reception schedule, activity plan, questionnaires and the guide diary. 4. The tour guide should write a brief summary of the tour just completed and review the tourists' opinions and suggestions from the questionnaires so as to improve his work in the future. If a serious accident occurred during the tour, the guide must submit a written report to the travel agency. 5. Learn more knowledge: After a group departed, the guide should think the problems that he didn't understand clearly. And he should not response "I don't know" twice for the same question. more

Resolved Question: 30 days Plan to resemble a command economy in 30 days: free market and progress for all?

Rockwell's Thirty-Day Plan By Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. When Eastern Europe broke free in 1989, we all realized just how little thought had been given to the transition from socialism to capitalism. Mises had told us the collapse was coming, and we should have been prepared. As America comes to resemble a command economy, we need a transition plan here too. Yuri Maltsev proposed a "One-Day Plan" for the U. S. S. R. We're not in that bad a shape (yet), so we could do it in 30 days. DAY ONE: The federal income tax is abolished and April 15th is declared a national holiday. The 40% reduction in federal revenues is matched by a 40% cut in spending. The budget is still almost twice as big as Jimmy Carter's. DAY TWO: All other federal taxes are abolished, including the corporate income tax, the capital gains tax, the gasoline tax, "sin" taxes, excise taxes, etc. Businesses boom, and the few legitimate federal functions are funded with an inexpensive head tax. People who choose not to vote need not pay it. (Note: this was a mainstream view in the 19th century.) DAY THREE: The federal government sells all its land, freeing up tens of millions of acres for development, mining, farming, forestry, oil drilling, private parks, etc. The government uses the revenue to pay off the national debt and other liabilities. DAY FOUR: The minimum wage is reduced to zero, creating jobs for ex-federal bureaucrats at their market wage. All pro-union laws and regulations are scrapped. The jobless rate falls dramatically. DAY FIVE: The Bureau of Labor Statistics, like the rest of the Labor Department, is sent to that big hiring hall in the sky. Without detailed economic statistics, future economic planners will be blind and deaf. DAY SIX: The Department of Commerce is abolished. Big business has to make its own way in the world, without subsidies and privileges at the expense of its competitors and customers. DAY SEVEN: The plug is pulled on the Department of Energy. Oil and gas prices plummet. DAY EIGHT: All regulatory agencies, from the Interstate Commerce Commission to the Federal Trade Commission, are deep-sixed. Competition is legalized. DAY NINE: HUD is squashed like a bug. There's a buiding boom in cheap, private, apartments. DAY TEN: The interstate highways reopen as private businesses. Road entrepreneurs price travel according to consumer demand. Using modern technology, drivers get bills once a month. Credit risks-and drunks and dangerous drivers- aren't allowed on the road. Non-drivers no longer subsidize car owners. DAY ELEVEN: Government welfare is wiped out. Bums work or starve. The deserving poor find a cornucopia of private services designed to make them independent. Private charity explodes, as the American people, already the most generous in the world, find their incomes almost doubled, thanks to the tax cuts. DAY TWELVE: The Federal Reserve closes its open-market operations and stops protecting the banking industry from competition. But banks can now engage in all the non-bank financial activities previously forbidden to them. The business cycle, which is caused by monetary expansion through the credit markets, is liquidated. DAY THIRTEEN: Federal deposit insurance is scrapped. All insured deposits are redeemed from federal assets, which include the personal assets of high-level government employees. The threat of bank runs forces banks to keep 100% reserves for their demand deposits, and prudent reserves on all other accounts. There are no more inherently bankrupt banks propped up by the government, at taxpayer expense, and no more bail outs. DAY FOURTEEN: The shaky fiat dollar is defined in terms of gold, with the ratio determined by dividing the government's gold stock by all existing dollars on that day. DAY FIFTEEN: The federal government sells National and Dulles airports to the highest bidder, and stops all subsidies to other socialist airports around the country. All constraints on airline prices and service cease. It costs more to fly during peak hours than off-peak, but overall, air travel drops in price. DAY SIXTEEN: All government regulations that create and sustain cartels are abolished, including those for the post office, telephones, television, radio, and cable TV Prices plummet, and a host of new and unforeseen services becomes available. DAY SEVENTEEN: Centrally planned agriculture, as imposed by Hoover and Roosevelt, is repealed: there are no more subsidies, payments-in-kind, marketing orders, low-interest loans, etc. Farm prices drop. Entrepreneurial farmers get rich. Welfare farmers go into another line of work. The poor eat like kings. DAY EIGHTEEN: The Justice Department shutters its anti-trust division. Companies, big and small, are free to merge – up, down, or sideways. Stockholders can buy any other company, or sell their stock to anyone else. Marginal producers can no longer battle their competitors with bureaucratic weapons. DAY NINETEEN: The Department of Education flunks the constitutionality test, and is kicked out. Private charities set up remedial reading and writing programs for the former bureaucrats. Federally subsidized sex education and other anti-family programs go out of business. Local school districts become responsive to parents or close, pressured by a fast-growing private school sector (which many more parents can now afford). DAY TWENTY: All federal monuments are sold, in some cases to non-profit groups based on the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association, which owns and runs George Washington's home. The VFW buys the Vietnam memorial. There is much bidding for the Jefferson and Washington monuments. Nobody wants FDR's, so it's torn down and the land sold to a farmer. (With the federal government cut back to its constitutional size, much of Washington reverts to productive uses like agriculture, as in late 18th century.) DAY TWENTY-ONE: The computerized financial and political dossier maintained by the government on every American is erased. The public wanders through the federal offices to make sure, in a reprise of the East Berliners' visits to Stasi headquarters. DAY TWENTY-TWO: Equal rights are granted to all Americans, even members of non-victim groups. There is no affirmative action, no quotas, no set-asides, no public accommodations laws. Private property and freedom of association are fully restored. DAY TWENTY-THREE: The EPA is cleaned out, with all "clean air" and similar big-government laws repealed. Ten thousand lawyers leap from their balconies. Private property is established in air and water. Americans harmed by pollution are free to sue the polluters, who are no longer protected by the federal government. DAY TWENTY-FOUR: Americans are given complete freedom of contract, restoring rationality to malpractice and product liability law. DAY TWENTY-FIVE: Government scrambles for more assets to sell (i.e., the National Zoo, also known as Washington, D.C.) to pay off the liabilities of the privatized Social Security system. DAY TWENTY-SIX: Porno artists have to earn their own livings, as the National Endowment for the Arts tries to raise its budget through sidewalk painting sales. DAY TWENTY-SEVEN: Foreign aid is outlawed as unconstitutional, unjust, and un-economic. Foreign politicians have to steal their own money. The World Bank, IMF, and United Nations close their super- luxurious doors. DAY TWENTY-EIGHT: The American people are given the unrestricted right to keep and bear arms. DAY TWENTY-NINE: The Defense Department is reoriented towards defense. American troops come home from all around the world. We adopt a policy of armed neutrality, remembering the Founding Fathers' teaching that we could not have an empire abroad and a constitutional republic at home. DAY THIRTY: All tariffs, quotas, and trade agreements are put through the shredder. Americans can trade with anyone in the world, without barriers or subsidies. Japanese car prices drop an immediate 25%. In just 30 exhilarating days, we have established the outlines of free market. Radical? Maybe so. Me, I can't wait until Month Two. __________ Llewellyn H. Think about it - once the internet got going, some businesses were totally taken from behind... either they no longer exist "out on the street", or are so beaten that there are few that flourish.
