Bye-bye, boomer professors
But Melbourne Business School economics professor Joshua Gans says "the crunch time will be far sooner", especially in the sciences, since time taken to do PhD and postdoctoral work - which often requires working overseas - has extended the time to produce an academic by up to 10 to 12 years. Australia is already facing a shortfall of 19,000 scientists, engineers and technical professionals, the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia reports.
Gans predicts mass restructuring and courses evaporating from lower-ranked universities as their higher-ranked counterparts poach their staff to counter their own shortfalls.

Business execs convinced time is right for Atlantica
The longtime business executive has served as vice-president Atlantica for the Atlantic Provinces Chambers of Commerce for the past year. He has been meeting government and business leaders in the area that falls under the Atlantica designation — the four Atlantic provinces, southern Quebec, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and upstate New York.
"I think more and more people can see the benefits of working together," Mr. Samson said in an interview at the annual meeting of the regional chamber held over the weekend here in Stanley Bridge.
He said one of the major challenges to the idea has been increased border security in the wake of the 9-11 attacks in 2001. However, he is starting to sense some movement on both sides of the border to establish a system that keeps the border secure, while at the same time allows for a free flow of commerce. more
BofA moving cash group to Boston
The bank's Boston-based investment-management division, Columbia Management Group, hired Paul Quistberg this year from mutual-fund company Putnam Investments to lead the cash group. The unit has run into problems during the credit crunch, with a group of money-market funds it manages suffering losses.
Money-market funds are designed to give consumers and institutional investors a place to put their money and earn a higher return than a savings account but with minimal risk. The typically invest in low-risk securities such as Treasuries and commercial paper.
Money-market funds attempt to keep their shares stable at $1, with only the yield rising or falling. While it's rare, those shares may fall below $1, or "break the buck," if the fund's investments do poorly, and investors can lose money. more

Open Question: " I am a middle aged single woman.. who would like your advise on a career choice with this unstable economy">?
I am 45. I never had the opportunity or privelage of attending College. I had my share of some short term certificate courses .. that over the years not worked in my favor. I decided to do what interests me.. instead of allowing the pressure of society.. and the pressure of the economy to dictate what I should do for a living.. which to me personally is like living in a prison. I understand times are tough all over.. I have read hundreds of blogs from all states. I live in Central Wisconsin. In the area and surrounding there are many Day Spas.. and a Resort area as well that is a ways from me. I have decided to attend school for Esthetician. To work in the later. I am just concerned.. maby overly.. I know.. and have hope as many others do that things will improve and get better.. and jobs will open up in all areas ...not just a few sellect ones. I am not the type of person that can hate what I do. When I first moved into this state five years ago.. I took on many cleaning jobs.. that left my body banged up and lungs filled with chemicals from bleach. I worked at McDonalds for an okay wage here.. I have even attempted working in a factory .. which was sheer hell. I paid my dues.. there.. so..decided to do something that is of interest to me. Something .. I would be able to get out of bed and not dread or cry doing. The course is only five months. I don't thankfully.. in my situation and with the economy have any children. Just two dogs. I have come up with a plan of ideas to make extra money.. leading me into a side or business of my own. There is a theatre course at a near by College that allows you to take a College credit course cheaper for no credit and no tests.. I forget what they call it at the moment. This would be for theatre make up.. that would allow me to free lance at local theatres and Opra houses.I have both in my town where I live.. and outside of.. larger ones. Also... I was planning on setting a table up at a Bridal Expo .. to advertise my services.. for skin care once out of school and I get my lisence. I was going to advertise/make spa baskets.. and advertise on business cards.. spa bachelorette parties... bridal/brides maid make up groups..in addition to theatres and oprah.. once taking those classes. I also seen that quite a few spas offer permanent eye lash services. They offer the training here for one to two days. Its kinda expensive.. and this part and the theatre will have to wait a bit until I get some income and tips. But.. the permanent eye lash service are 250-300.00 a person a full set.. then 75.00 a month to 90.. up keep per month to fill in. Obvisously.. this service is geared towards the women who have money and who depend on their looks for their careers. Once I were to get certified in this area.. I could do this also on my own .. and work for myself. I recently ... saw an actual gold facial on tv that I am interested in looking into that goes for 625.00 per three sessions. So... there is much money to be made for those who have it to spend and are wealthy. I suppose ..... I am just panicking.. and thinking.. I am in a way going out on a limb here.. but honestly.. I have run out of choices.. I also thought.. about me establishing a busness and name for myself here.. and IF ... I ever decided to move.. all is lost .and I would have to start all over..... Please Offer Your Opionions and Support... Thank YouI hate the medical field al together..! I do have a state Medicaid Card that will remain in effect from year to year.. for anyone who does not have medical coeverage or works for themselfs. Not many employers can offer medical.. I would be a teacher.. before the medical field.. I am also writing a screen play which is my long term goal. Skin Care is my short term one.. HUGSPLease... don't leave me messages about The Medical Field As Stated.. I will not conform to a career I hate.. to be a cookie cutter representation of society.. My friend is a nurse and hates it.. The way the health care system in this country is going.. people will be responsible for their own health and the health industry will be phased out slowly...... Mostly... I rather leave this earth being true to who I am... I would rather go to hollywood and be an actor.. opposed to the Medical Industry.... As Stated.... I am presently pursuing being a screenwriter (close) ..which is what I plant to do in the future..for now.... Esthetician...NOT Medical... is my quesition moreResolved Question: Will I be able to get a visable tattoo with this kind of job?

I am a 25 years old student from Africa with big dreams. When i was young i always wanted to be a doctor and work with children or new mothers. I did great in my high school but Because the were no financially resources i had to go look for a job.I found one and ended up working as a travel consultant(and studing massage therapy parttime) which i was good at but was just not satisfied. So i quit and Today i am in the states and just arrived 4 months ago. i have four years planned to study but i am soo confused. I came here planning to study business administration and other beauty courses part time so that i may go back home and open and run a spa/salon. My dream is fashion designing but i really cant afford a fashion school and fashion designing currently does not have promises in my country. This is my talent and creativity. I have great sketches and i am depressed that i thought of selling them. When i say my sketches are good, then you will probably think that i am wasting my talent. so i put my talent aside and try to work on something that i am more likely to have success. Soo i have put fashion designing totally out for the next decade of mylife. # days ago i started to think about if i really want to study business administration and run a salon. Then i suddenly thought of changing my career path and do what i wanted to do back when i was young and that is to be a physician. So i am thinking of working evenings and do premed in biology for 4 years. then save as much as i can so that i may go continue my studies in South africa to be a physician. I feel this is likely to work out due to the exchange rates in currencies. I am confused................please help moreResolved Question: A good job for a business entrepreneurship degree?

Okay so I am a senior in high school and I'm just so stuck on my college planning. I have wanted to be a substance abuse counselor but I couldn't really find a college that I liked so I gave up on that because I also wanted to go to cosmetology school. Now i'm on the path of looking at going to a cosmetology school for a year and then finding a job at some type of salon and then going to a college to get a business degree so i can eventually open up my own salon/day spa everyone says that this is a pretty good plan. But i always feel a little upset with myself when i tell people what i want to do because i know im really smart and i feel like im not going to amount to as much as i really could so i really dont know anymore...what do you guys think? moreResolved Question: How do I get my money back from a spa that went out of business?
Hi, I purchased a package at a spa a few months ago and only used a small portion of it but was planning to use the rest in the next month. I told them this at the time and they assured me there was no problem and no expiration on what I pre-paid for. They sent me an email yesterday saying that they are going out of business. There was no warning, they suddenly just closed yesterday and took my remaining $900 along with them. How can I attempt to get my money back for services that I paid for in advance? If they refuse to refund me, can I sue them in small claims court if they have not filed bankruptcy? Any advice would be very helpful! Thanks! moreVoting Question: Does any one know a place where I could attempt to get a loan?
Ok... This is all complicated. I own a business, have for 8 months. It is doing well, better numbers than the previous years same time frame. I got home from a year deployment (Iraq) just over a year ago, and therefore can not prove income from one place for two years. My expected yearly income is $24,000 for now. My credit score is a 726 and will improve soon, once I pay off my debt from purchasing the business. I plan to build an apartment on top of my current salon (it is a big project - but doable) next spring. By then my credit will be higher, but I need to borrow about 50,000 for the project, and I still won't have two years of financials. I can't borrow under a home mortgage because it will be a building project (this also rules out a va loan), and I only have collateral as much as my business (6 tanning beds, computer, furniture, washer/dryer, and spa equipment). Any suggestions??? moreResolved Question: can anyone here help me in building a project report for a business?

Is she prejudice? How do I deal with her?
My soon to be mother in law hates me! I have no idea how to handle the situation. He's white, I'm half black half Portuguese and East Indian. I would like to say that I don't think my race is a factor in the situation, but sadly I"m starting to believe that it is. I have been dating my fiancé whom I met in Med. school for nearly 3 ½ years. When we first starting dating I would try to make friendly conversation with his mom, but she would always shut me down. She didn't talk to me much, despite my attempts to get to know her. I’d ask her to lunch, but she always had other plans. A few years back she had a family gathering at her home and actually told people that I was his “Lab partner from school” rather than his girlfriend when we had been together nearly a year. It was awkward. Back then I just told myself that I was dating him not his mom, but 3 years later and it's still the same routine. A few weeks ago his brother’s wife told me that during a conversation with her, his aunt and a family friend she pretty much called me a gold-digger. I don’t know what bothers me more, the fact that she’s slandering my name throughout their family or that she thinks I’m a gold-digger. I don’t come from money and I never claimed that I did. I was raised in a single parent household, but was lucky that my mother stressed education. My fiancé and I do live together, but we split rent and expenses. I went from UCLA to a top 10 Medical School. I make pretty much the same amount of money as her son, yet she acts as if I’m some bimbo he met at club and then decided to marry 2 months later. I feel like I constantly have to prove myself to her, but it doesn’t matter because her opinion of me never changes. I thought that she didn’t like me because I didn’t come from their social circle. I didn’t go to the fancy prep schools, didn’t grow up in a fancy house on a hill, but now I think she just doesn’t like me because I’m not white. She absolutely adores her other two daughter in laws who are both white. She makes lunch and spa plans with them which she purposely excludes me from. Last month she invited them both out to lunch. I of course wasn’t invited, but I was out with them so they convinced me to “just come along”. When we got there the first thing she did was ask me what I was doing there. Not rudely, but in a tone of that would make you feel pretty darn uncomfortable. She said about two sentences to me during lunch, then pretty much ignored me. If I asked her something she’d respond with a “Yes” or “No”. She also left lunch early that day, claiming that she had “important business to tend to”. My fiancé knows that his mom doesn’t like me. He has asked her why she disapproves of me and she answered saying, “She’s just not good enough for you”. She can’t muster up one legitimate reason why! I’m simply not good enough. One of her daughter in laws is a 23 year old community college drop out, who has never held a real job. Her life basically consists of her driving around in her $100K Mercedes SUV that her husband purchased for her and shopping. His mother has absolutely no problem with that, she adores the girl, but I’m the “gold-digger who isn’t good enough for her son!” Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore both of the wives and I’m close with them, but I just don’t understand why she’s acts so vile towards me, yet accepts the other girl. Whenever I'm around she does everything in her power to make me feel awkward and uncomfortable. It’s gotten to the point where I honestly dread going to any type of family event. Yesterday we went to his parent’s house for his youngest sister’s birthday party. The first thing she did was look at my engagement ring and say, “Wow, that’s nice size diamond. Where is it from, How many carats is it? You picked it out, didn’t you?” At first I thought she was actually giving me a complement, but then I realized that she was just reassuring herself that I was a gold-digger and making sure that I didn’t go with her son to pick out the most expensive ring! Less than an hour later someone said something about my fiancé and she goes, “Yes, he’s a handsome man”, then looks at me and says, “and he could have any women he wanted”. I wanted to slap her. 10 minutes later during a conversation with his aunt who was asking me questions about my job his mother says, “Oh, don’t worry he’s going to make her sign a prenup”. This time I wanted to shove her into the pool. I don’t think THAT was why his aunt was asking me questions about my job, she seemed generally interested. I have nothing against a prenuptial agreement, but it was inappropriate for her to bring it up like that, it’s none of her business. That fact that she told his aunt that he was going to “MAKE” me sign it got to me. She made it seem as if he had actually discussed this with her, which he hadn’t. I don’t know how to deal with this woman anymore. If I didn’t see her so often,I don’t think it would bother me, but she lives less than 20 minutes away. My fiancé has a big family, so there’s always an event or party to go to. My mother moved back to India a few years ago so we’re with his family for pretty much every holiday. His mother is unavoidable. Sometimes I make excuses to get out of going, but then I feel bad about it. I’m missing out trying to avoid her and she’s getting exactly what she wants in the process! He says we don’t have to go to the family events, but I don’t want to keep him away from his family and bedsides his mother, I absolutely love the rest of his family. I could honestly write a book about this woman, but I’m going to stop now. How do I deal with her? She has friends of all different ethnicities, so I don’t think she’s necessarily racist, maybe just prejudice towards me? No one in her family has married outside their race and I don’t think she wants her son to be the first. I don't think I can deal with her for the rest of my life. moreResolved Question: My soon to be mother in law hates me? Is she racist? How do I deal with her?

It's going to be a different sort of spa though because you'll have the option of ordering food, getting your hair styled, and of course massage/aroma therapy. Has the mission finally been accomplished? Big Oil Back To Iraq? http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/06/24/business/econwatch/entry5109976.shtml Iraq finally surrenders its oil sovereignty to trans-national corporations. The article: "Thirty five companies are qualified to bid on foreign oil contracts with Iraq starting next week, the Wall Street Journal reports. The government decided to auction off foreign oil contracts in an attempt to boost up its war torn economy. The auction is taking place for the first time since Iraq nationalized its oil industry more than 30 years ago. Among top potential bidders are Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Italy's Eni SpA, Russia's Lukoil and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. If all goes according to plan, the new contracts with foreign companies will help Iraq to stabilize six developed fields which have suffered because of the war. Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani has expressed his commitment to staying on the deal despite lawmakers' concerns of legality of the contracts - believed by the parliament to have highly favorable terms for the foreign companies. According to Wall Street Journal, the oil deal could be key to stablizing Iraq's economy and to its proposed plans to boost oil output from the current 2.4 million barrels a day to 4 million. The companies themselves, are also reported as being eager to receive the contracts due to Iraq's relativly unexplored reservoirs, with some considering the nation as the most important opening of petrolium fields in years. Only about 20 out of the known 80 oil fields have been developed. Al-Shahristani has stated that the companies with the lowest rates and highest potential profit for Iraq will receive the contracts, according to the article. Approximately 120 companies were interested in bidding. The contracts will last 20 years and the winning companies will begin work in November." moreResolved Question: Is it finally mission accomplished in Iraq?

The business plan is for my own spa and i am having trouble coming up with a mission statement. Any ideas?? Help please....my mind is blank! moreResolved Question: Need help with a good business name for a massage therapy practice!?
I'm approaching graduation to become a certified massage therapist and currently i'm designing a mandatory project representing what my own business could (in my case, will) be. To give you a quick background into what I plan to offer: Specializing in oriental bodywork and medicine, I will offer Thai Yoga Massage (northern style), Zen Shiatsu, Reflexology, Reiki, and Restoration Therapy. For now i'm a sole proprietor, so the name has to be for me and me alone. Eventually I may expand into a spa type atmosphere with my own man-made hot springs and Japanese style inn (ryokan), but I could always change the name later right? By the way, that's many years down the road! For now all I will offer is the massage and eventually after more education more about medicinal herbs, etc. Now that's giving you a summary of what I do and might offer at the very least. There is a couple ideas that have inspired me, such as http://www.tenthousandwaves.com japanese style spa in Santa Fe, NM. BEAUTIFUL, and very close to the type of atmosphere i'd offer. Another example is the "Eight Branches" School of Asian Bodywork ( http://www.eightbranches.org/global/pages/Home/index.html ). What i've noticed about these names? They don't have what I call "filler" words like "of" or "the", it isn't boring such as "Jesse's Massage, LMT", but it's simple and uses words that flow easily. "Ten Thousand Waves" makes me think of a rolling ocean, which for some people is therapeutic. "Eight Branches" signifies simplicity about something common in nature, and yet it feels as if it fits, and for some it can signify peace. It doesn't need to be complex, but it should relate to what I offer in some form. I tried fitting "Zen" in the name, but there is already many businesses with that name. And i'm not sure if I should have it as a name in another language, or just english. Hope you've got some good ideas! moreResolved Question: Is this kind of business ALLOWED?

My girlfriend is turning 33 tomorrow. She is very depressed about where she is in life at her age. These are just the highlights btw. What can I possibly do?... she is a fighter, but a person can only take so much... I want to take her out and take all of her pain away, but I lost my job 3 weeks ago thanks to this lovely economy. Putting aside the bad economy for a second... My husband is considering a career change, and he has a real talent with and passion for dogs. He's very good with dogs' behavior problems. He isn't a professional, but we've rescued some dogs that most people would consider hopeless, and he turned them around. We also possess a house out in the country, surrounded by farms, on about 9 acres of land. It's about 30 minutes from very affluent suburbs, and 45 minutes from a fairly big city (about half a million people, metro). I don't think that the city or suburbs have any good dog spas (the kind where you can kennel), bootcamps for training, or especially parks - the kind where you can train dogs for competitions or just let dogs play. I don't know if it's at all feasible and what the zoning issues would be, but it fits very nicely into my 20-year plan to start a no-kill dog sanctuary. Anyone know anything about this business? Is starting something like this 30 minutes outside the major population zone a feasible idea? I figured it might be best suited for a doggie training bootcamp, because (1) people tend to be really desperate to consider them and (2) it's not like they'd have to drive there every single day. But there's also the dog spa, because people may consider driving to a high-quality kennel when they're going out of town just so their dog gets better care. And the dog park idea might not be so feasible for people who just want to take their dogs to a park (there are very few parks in this area that allow dogs FYI), but I figure people who want to train their dogs for competitions will probably be willing to drive. And if my spouse put the effort in to become a professional trainer, he could do behavioral training as well as dog competition training. Any thoughts?Cheryl, thank you so much. This is the kind of info I need. Never apologize for long, detailed answers full of valuable information! I wish more people spent time like this on their answers. I will be e-mailing you soon (thanks so much for offering!) after I talk to my spouse so that I can ask more detailed, specific questions. His interests also sway towards rehabilitation, as do mine because of the dog sanctuary/shelter I want to start one day. (Though I suck at being a pack leader, I've got a business/nonprofit background.) He thinks that dog show training in addition would simply be a lot of fun. I hope you get your land one day. Thanks! moreResolved Question: help with starting up a business?

I am considering opening a business for a dog gym and spa center. I have purchased a lot of land in suburban Atlanta that includes two empty chicken houses, which I would convert into gyms. I do plan on building a main center with enclosed gardens, pool and walking trails. What advice do you have for me? What would you look for if searching for a day-care center for dogs? Even if you don't have dogs, any advice would be greatly appreciated. This would be a day-care center for dogs rather than for children, but I want it to be structured and secured like one. Thank you! There is an animal hospital and vet office just 2 miles from where I would build it.I would have young puppies and adult dogs separated. Puppies would graduate first before interacting with adult dogs. moreResolved Question: Do women feel comfortable with male aestheticians?
For years, I've been thinking about a major career move. I have this idea of becoming an anti-aging specialist. I've discovered three different schools and or courses that would help me achieve this goal. I would have to become a qualified personal trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, go to school for aesthetics (figured Skin Science in Utah might be the best choice) and receive a certification from the American College of Anti-Aging Sports Medicine. With all of these combined, I'd plan to open my own practice. Rather unique, because I actually have a passion for health, fitness, skincare etc. One Problem! How do women feel about having a male aesthetician? No waxing or make-up, although that's in the curriculum, but I'd be more concerned with doing facial services, skin evaluations and various other spa treatments, along with doing personal training sessions, and teaching fitness classes. The idea is to help others maintain and preserve their natural beauty without drugs or medical procedures. In my mind, this could be really exciting, and an extremely lucrative business. I just want to know what the women think, considering spa and wellness is a female dominated industry. Be honest. moreResolved Question: Mobile Spa-ideas for growth in this bad economy?
I own a mobile spa. I haven't made much profit since its start earlier this year. I know it takes a long time for a business to grow but, with the economy the way it is I was thinking of another way to go about it. Like perhaps marketing it as an event planning company and branching out a bit. I love what I do but let's face it, lack of profit is VERY discouraging even for something you love. Mobile spa prices are higher than day spas because we come to you and I just don't think people are trying to spend the extra money to have this luxury. What are some other ways I can try to make a decent profit in this down-trodden economy? Ways I can better advertise to potential clients about what I offer, which is professional spa services on-location. moreResolved Question: What steps did you take and how hard was it to get the doors open?

I'm about to graduate from college and I also have a decent office job, although I always find myself exhausted from school and work. I am very independent, do not live with my parents, and manage to pay all my bills. I have a very attractive friend who is attending an Ivy League school and had this crazy idea that she doesn't want to work after college, so, she found her self a sugar daddy. He pays her $5,000-10,000 a month, and now she spends all her time going to spas, traveling, and shopping. She loves the lavish life, but the problem is that she is too smart for her own good. She's decided to use the sugar daddy until she gets tired of him, and then move on to the next guy. She's like a cruel tiger, she won't allow herself to fully love a man, and just uses them for sex and money, and when she gets bored, she moves on to the next guy. She won't allow he self to get dumped, so she just moves on after a few months. Since she will be graduating from a top Ivy League, she plans to use sugar daddies to save cash to start her own business. Now she wants me to follow in her footsteps. She thinks I should quit my job and get a sugar daddy! She told me "why have sex for free when there are people in the world willing to pay for it?" I think what she is doing is wrong, but a part of me could really use the money, I'm not sure what to do. I'm just a sweet little college girl. moreResolved Question: Mobile Spa Needs to Make profit-marketing help!
I own a mobile spa servicing the DC metro area. We have been in business for over 6 months and have not made any profit. The money I do make pays for supplies and the independent contractors I use for my events. I am having a hard time deciding what will work and what won't so I won't waste money. I do a lot of events where I offer services at no charge but I can't continue to do that. Basically I am trying to book corporate clients, community events and people who want to have spa parties but nothing is coming in right now. I do a lot of internet marketing and internet research to find new gigs. What else do I need to do? And how best to decide on a marketing plan so I don't waste time/money? I would like to get to the point where I can franchise eventually but I want to get my marketing scheme down first so I can help others. I am really interested in hearing from other mobile spas as well. moreTop Spa Business Plan Links
