Focus on Memorial Day's true meaning
I have received several E-greeting cards sending thanks for "your military service on this Memorial Day."
A radio DJ Sunday asked all his listeners to "remember the victims of the cyclone in Burma and the earthquake in China on this Memorial Day."
Another DJ added that all his listeners should "thank a veteran, an active duty military person, the reservists and all their family members" on this Memorial Day.
I do not mean to appear insensitive or unappreciative. Veterans, active duty military members and their families prize sincere thanks anytime. And I genuinely believe praying and remembering are powerful tools in easing the suffering of, and providing hope for, victims of natural disasters.
But Memorial Day is not and should not be about remembering some random, dead relative or victims of natural disasters. more
Manitoba Telecom Services is firmly focused on growing its business, CEO says
TORONTO - Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. (TSX:MBT) is firmly focused on growing its business especially its wireless segment, CEO Pierre Blouin told the company's annual meeting Thursday after MTS announced two financial partners have pulled out of a consortium created to bid on wireless spectrum licences.
"With our first-quarter of 2008 results, MTS has now delivered nine consecutive quarters of ... solid financial performance," Blouin told shareholders in Winnipeg, as the company celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding.
The company "is growing its top line and its profitability and is succeeding against much larger national competitors," he said.
While the company's wireless operations now reach 97 per cent Manitoba's population, its market share remains much smaller in the rest of the country with the exception of Ontario, Blouin said. more

The theft of copper is getting to be big business in Coffee County, but officials say constant checks are being made to help eliminate thieves who mark copper and other metals as targets.
Sunday, the Coffee County Sheriff's Department found not only were thieves trying to steal copper, but also trucks from the Coffee County Landfill.
The landfill, located in the Victoria community, was broken into sometime Sunday said Coffee County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth.
"They attempted to steal the copper and load in into some trucks, but both trucks got stuck inside the landfill and they up empty with the copper, but they did steal $200 worth of diesel fuel," he said. "Right now, we think we may have a suspect, but this is undetermined at this time."
