Center seeks nominees for Ethics in Business awards

The Samaritan Counseling Center is seeking nominations for the annual New Mexico Ethics in Business awards.

The Center's awards recognize for-profit businesses, nonprofits and individuals whose present or past work in New Mexico demonstrates the highest ethical conduct and social responsibility.

Nominations for the 2009 event will accepted until August 1, 2008, at 5 p.m. A screening committee will forward a maximum of 30 nominees to the University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management.

Business ethics students then will research each nominee during the fall semester. The selection committee, a group of New Mexico business leaders, will choose the recipients.

City program helps cook up a taste for business

Sam used to be a big guy in the information technology business. Martha was a tax accountant with the same firm.

You know how it goes these days. Sam was handed a package, and Martha quit. But they are too young and too smart to sit still. They always cook together at home.

Martha is from Colombia, and there is nothing about empanadas she does not know. So they decided to go into business.

She and Sam incorporated, and they were developing their recipes in the kitchen of a friend who is a chef, when they heard about the incubator.

For $1,000 plus a few hundred dollars more for insurance, they got three months' access to a fully-equipped professional kitchen, and some first-rate industrial help with their business plan.

Their plan?

Martha pointed to the pulled pork and said, "I'd like to get these meals into institutions." She also wants to feed all the empanada-eaters at the city's big-league soccer pitch. more

`Underwriter's Lament' Blames Issuers for Hard Times: Joe Mysak

Investment banks eliminate lines of business that don't make money.

The Lament goes like this: Why are underwriting spreads so narrow? It's the politicians' fault! Politicians demand narrower underwriting spreads to further their careers.

What? The Lament always stops me cold. I usually ask correspondents to elaborate a bit. I mean: You can't be serious.

They are, and deadly serious. So help me out here. I haven't lived in all 50 states, and have only visited a handful of cities. Do politicians run on the slogan, ``I Showed the Wall Street Smarties and Made Them Sell Our Bonds for Almost Nothing''?

When United Way of Greater Eau Claire serves up the outdoor culinary celebration again on Sunday in Phoenix Park, Jan Porath would like to see attendance grow to more than 15,000.

"It's just something different that people can take part in that's very family-friendly," said Porath, United Way director of communications.

More than 30 restaurants, caterers and specialty food shops will showcase their products. Most will sell sample-size foods, which require one to five tickets. Each ticket costs $1.

Menu items include Beer Can Chicken, Chicken Satays With Peanut Sauce, Mini Prime Rib on Pumpernickel Bun With Silver Spring Gardens Horseradish Sauce, Chilled Strawberry Soup and Coconut Shrimp Skewers with Pia Colada Dipping Sauce. And what Wisconsin festival would be complete without cheese curds, cotton candy and corn dogs?
