A leg up for startups

"Now that we are out on our own and have a bigger landscape, we are really excited about growing our business," said Trent Ritzenthaler, president and managing partner of Ascendium. A part owner, Ritzenthaler ran the business when it was the professional services arm of Roche, dubbed Healthcare Solutions.

"We are not starting from scratch. We had years of operation. We had clients we are taking with us. We had gas in the tank," Ritzenthaler added. "We have a better chance of success because we have had that investment from Roche."

Ascendium is the latest example of how local companies such as Roche and Eli Lilly and Co. are driving growth in the region's life-sciences sector by spinning off former divisions and promising inventions. These spinoffs are helping keep high-paying life- sciences jobs in the area, spurring more early-stage investments, and fostering a more entrepreneurial culture in Central Indiana. more

Voting Question: Is Cosmetology School for me?

Hi everyone! I am currently a full-time college student working towards a degree in business / marketing. However, since the economy has been creating instability in the workplace, I'm worried that earning a degree won't guarantee that I will find a job out of school. Don't get me wrong; I am still 100% dedicated to graduating. I just think it's a good idea to have a back-up plan. So that's where I got this idea... I've always been interested in hair and make up; I've taken my own hair from jet black to platinum blonde and back, and I'm constantly experimenting with make up. Then I got this idea... what if I went to cosmetology school? If I got my cosmetology license, I could work as a hair dresser or make up artist. Not only would this help fund my schooling / life expenses, but it would also be a Plan B if I couldn't get a job right away after college. It would also be a great fall-back down the road, if I ever lost my job or needed to take on a second job. Now, as I mentioned, I am currently a full time college student. That said, my class schedule is very flexible so I could move things around to incorporate cosmetology classes. So here are my questions: 1) How much does cosmetology school usually cost? 2) After graduating from cosmetology school, would I be able to find a job that pays above minimum wage? (Enough to support myself?) Is there a rough estimate of my potential earnings? 3) Any other advice or warnings? I am just toying with the idea now, but I think this would really be something I could enjoy. I would love to hear whatever you have to say! Thank you so much for your time! more
