Is Microsoft starting to get its branding act together?

Today, at Advance08, Microsoft unveiled a new brand name, Microsoft Advertising, and a new logo, which amazingly enough seems to fit into an overall scheme of recent logos. Take a look at these:

(there are more, thanks to VasiS for noticing in the comments)

This month's Fast Company magazine has a cover story on Alex Bogusky and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, the ad agency recently hired to run the $300 million dollar ad campaign Microsoft is planning for this summer. While none of these logos and designs are from Crispin Porter + Bogusky, the new campaign may shed further light on how Microsoft is preparing to present itself to the world. Clearly someone is paying attention to the ridicule that Microsoft has brought upon itself by not paying attention to consumer focused issues like branding and logos, and how much effect those issues are starting to have on even Microsoft's core businesses. more

Simple game plan fuels Hopkins' D

ATTENDANCE: The first men's collegiate lacrosse championship weekend to be held in New England, welcomed 48,224 to Gillette Stadium yesterday. The mark was the third highest semifinal attendance in the tournament's 37-year history.

Second only to M&T Bank Stadium's 51,719 last year and 49,562 posted by Lincoln Financial Field in 2006, Gillette's turnout mirrors a peak in interest in the sport across the New England region.

Backed by stellar seasons from both preparatory and public institutions, namely Duxbury High School (former home to Duke attacker Max Quinzani), Massachusetts has seen an exponential increase in number of youth athletic programs across the state over the past five years.

Baltimore's record will be put to the test again next year, as the championships are slated for Foxborough again in 2009. more

Resolved Question: Why do State Capitalistic Nations continue to claim to be Socialists?

Perfect example: China. State capitalism has various different meanings, but is usually described as a society wherein the productive forces are controlled and directed by the state in a capitalist manner, even if such a state calls itself socialist.[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_capitalism Modern Socialism(little Socialist support): Socialists inspired by the Soviet model of economic development have advocated the creation of centrally planned economies directed by a state that owns all the means of production. Others, including Yugoslavian, Hungarian, German and Chinese communist governments in the 1970s and 1980s, have instituted various forms of market socialism, combining co-operative and state ownership models with the free market exchange and free price system (but not free prices for the means of production).[8] Modern social democrats propose selective nationalisation of key national industries in mixed economies, while maintaining private ownership of capital and private business enterprise. (In the 19th and early 20th century the term was used to refer to those who wanted to completely replace capitalism with socialism through reform.) Modern social democrats also promote tax-funded welfare programs and regulation of markets; many, particularly in European welfare states, refer to themselves as socialists, despite holding pro-capitalist viewpoints, thus adding ambiguity to the meaning of the term "socialist". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism Libertarian(true) Socialism: Libertarian socialism (including social anarchism and libertarian Marxism) rejects state control and ownership of the economy altogether and advocates direct collective ownership of the means of production via co-operative workers' councils and workplace democracy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian_socialism more

Resolved Question: Am I wrong? Is my canadian boyfriend stingy?

Happy New Year to everyone. Today I want to ask you whether he is stingy or I am wrong. Judge it, please. Any opinion is welcome, as long as they have good heart to answer. Sorry in advance, I am not English speaker, so it may not be good English. (My boyfriend is Canadian, middle 30's. He has his own business, always busy traveling. I met him in 2008 late May.When we go out together, he pays all.) I feel he is stingy. For example when he calls me, he will hang up the phone intentionally and lead me to call him back. Some are after 7,8 seconds talk and hang up suddenly, others are like one-ring and hang up before I answer. Even after I told him to stop that, he continued. Such things often happened. That's why I sometimes don't like to pick up his call, it makes me feel bad. Then it's better to call him than pick up calls. Another example, now I live in a kind of guest house (like dormitory). No man admitted to enter even brothers. Oh I must explain this first. We planned to buy an apartment with a view to marriage in the first place, it was in late April 2009. He said he will get one in cash as long as the price is within a set budget. That’s why I contacted a real estate agency, visited 8 apartments while he was in abroad to secure the fund for it. Unfortunately he never came back… He had postponed return date 4,5times even though he said each time “Please believe me this is final”. After several delay, he said he invested most of his earnings in business, so we must wait till get funds again. It was maybe late October or early November. Then I suggested to him to rent an apartment for now, to start living together and get married. You know, money is the first consideration to do something in real life. So I told him to send money first for securing apartment, then he started worrying about deposit and key money. Of course I must avoid unnecessary expenses, so I was looking for one with no key money and refundable security deposit. Anyway he didn’t send money eventually, even after I found “No key money, No deposit” apartment. It makes great sense to think he is not interested in living together and marriage. What’s worse is that he started to say he will stay at my place in secret! I told him that I can’t do that, you can’t come, because I don’t want to break rules and cause a thing, so if we live together, we should make a contract for 2 in another place. Then he said “That’s bullshit”, cursed at me and hung up the phone. I was speechless. If he’s a student, I can understand his remarks a little bit. Why can middle-aged man say that? The upshot is that he won’t come to Tokyo unless I all prepare the apartment for two. I can’t help thinking he just expects a free ride, doesn’t want to spend money. On the other hand, he keeps saying that man is meant to take proper care and responsibility of his spouse all the time, also keep saying that his dream is to live together as soon as possible to start enjoying best marriage and family life with me. (Almost copy and paste) What is responsibility, what is proper care? Marriage is not play house. Of course there are various types of marriage these days, But I am a quite typical and conservative Japanese-minded person. I told him, I want to be a housewife after marriage. In my view, it is husband’s obligation to take care of wife and children both mentally and financially. We formed a consensus through discussions when I met him in Bangkok in mid-September. He has been saying that he’ll do when the time is right. One year has passed. Time is now. If someone doesn’t do it now, someone never will. Honestly, I don’t know what he really wants to do with me. If he needs time to stay single or time to work alone as in past years, I can give him, it doesn’t matter at all. The problem is this. He has been always about to do, but has never yet begun it. He’s all mouth. To my regret I fully believed his words. If I were man who’s thinking about marriage, I will introduce her to my family first, buy or rent an apartment within few months at the latest, also set the date for wedding. So, I can’t see any effort or forms of love nor seriousness from him. How is my opinion very different from your countries ladies one? Let me know. Thanks for reading. more

Resolved Question: Who believes there is future for everyone in USA under our current form of Capitalism & Representative govt?

Capitalism - An economic system based on the “Survival of the fittest”. Socialism – An economic system based on “You get your share no matter what your contribution is”. Communism – An economic system based on “You put in your fair share, you get your fair share”. Fascism - pronounced /ˈfæʃɪzəm/, is a political ideology that seeks to combine radical and authoritarian nationalism with a corporatist economic system, ... One can safely say that mixed economies (a bit of all these forms ) are used in today’s age with most countries. China also with its centrally planned economy is moving towards market-oriented economy thus becoming a mixed economy. What each of these terms mean to an economy can be described as follows: CAPITALISM This term was first coined by Karl Marx to describe a system in which small group of people own large amount of money, land, resources. It puts all the economy is the hands of wealthy business people with the only aim of maximizing profits. Such economies remain free of government intervention with all the policies being determined by private individuals. The result is monopoly, and a huge gap in the earnings among the employer class and the worker class. Though its very good for trades and industries to flourish, it can lead to worker exploitation and unethical business pratices. “Laissez-Faire” capitalism which means pure capitalism with no government intervention is said to have never existed in practice. SOCIALISM It is considered to be the transitional phase between the capitalism and communism. Thus, you would find all communists advocating for socialism because it lays the foundations for communism. It advocates an egalitarian society where everyone shares equal wealth and power. There is a considerable disagreement over how the distribution should take place. Hence, socialism can be said to be between extreme capitalism and extreme communism with it being nearer to communism. Socialism is liberal. More people have say in how the economy works. COMMUNISM According to Karl Marx, this is the final stage towards development of egalitarian society. Here all the resources are state-owned and it determines its distribution based on the needs in an effort to bring about equality. Communism is conservative. Fewer and fewer people have any say in how the economy works. By using state coercion to fulfill unmet demands, it restricts individual freedom. Communism necessarily takes the form of totalitarianism, or the tyranny of all over one since its upto the state to decide who gets what. Historically, communist societies have been characterized by the absolute rule of a revolutionary party leader, beneath whom everyone is equally subservient. It becomes very difficult for such an economy to survive in a large population when it becomes difficult for equal distribution of resources. Resolved Question: Travelling to the US from the UK with a caution?

Hi Guys My first post on here, surely won't be my last! I am going to get straight to the point, I am planning a visit to the States in March whilst my girlfriend is on spring break. Now I understand that US immigration require anyone who has had *any* dealings with the police not to apply via the VWP, but by Visa instead. Let me fill you in. Almost 3 years ago (Jan, 2007) I was arrested and cautioned with theft from employer. A big naughty and only my first offence! At the time I was in a bad situation and had nobody to turn to, literally no one. My intention was to pay the money right back once my financial situation stabilised. Unfortunately I was caught before this could happen. I was duely dismissed and received a call from the police station asking me to make an appearance a few days later. I complied and attended said appointment. Was arrested once I passed through the foyer (without being cuffed), went through all the usual red tape in custody (prints, drug test, photos) and was then interviewed. During the interview I put my case forward and took whole acceptance of the situation, after a short wait they came back to inform me of the CPS' verdict. They issued me with a 'conditional caution', that said all monies were to be paid back and an apology letter was written by me to both the owners of the business and my fellow employees explaining my actions and apologising profusely for them. Otherwise face further prosecution. Both conditions I fufilled within the given time frame. My last dealings with them were in March of the same year, to reduce the 'conditional caution' down to a 'caution' at my last visit to the station. Lest to say I promised myself that'd be my only and last dealings with the police in that situation. Thankfully I can say this experience I have learned from and turned my life around in the time since. Now my predicament comes in the form of US immigration. Since booking my ticket I have completed the ETSA? travel document and received authorisation to travel under the VWP to the US for 2 years. Do they actually check peoples names and records when you fill out this application? Or is it a case of they accept you and then when you enter the US get pulled up for lieing on the original document. So do I chance it and answer 'No' on the I-94w form and try my luck at customs? Or do I apply through the correct routes and obtain a Visa. A good friend of mine who is a Constable imparted me with advice from his Sergeant that they *do not* have access to this kind of information, so theoretically should not be pulled up about it since it never resulted in a prosecution or gaol time. The only records available to them would be thier own, Interpols and i'd assume high profile criminals in the U.K that our own intelligence & immigration services are aware of. Can anyone verify that this may be the case? Another friend with about 3 cautions for various offences (including theft of a boat) recommended that I apply through the Visa route, he did and was accepted with no issues. What I am looking for is some solid advice on which to take action on. I have heard and seen so many conflicting stories that I really don't know what to do now! :-s I won't beat around the bush, the most hassle free approach would be the one i'm more inclined to take, although understand the severity of the situation that cutting corners may include, so would just like an impartial, informed and ultimately (first hand) experienced point of view. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any comments / help much appriciated. Feel free to reply or mail me direct! Ta! more

It becomes very difficult for such an economy to survive in a large population when it becomes difficult for equal distribution of resources. One can safely say that its the mixed economy (a bit of all the forms of economies) that in today’s age serve most of the countries well (US minus recession being a prime example). China also with its centrally planned economy is moving towards market-oriented economy thus becoming a mixed economy. more

Resolved Question: Can a scared girl get some answers PLEASE!!!?

This may seem a bit far fetched but I just want some straight answers, please. Every so often i black out, not like fall over and pass out black out. I'll use a not so long ago example. I was on the bus, traveling minding my own business when i suddenly got sleepy, travel has that affect on me but anyway. I' had fallen asleep then woke up going home, with all sorts of stuff that i hadn't planned on getting and some random guy talking to me like we have been spending the whole day together! It was happening randomly during the day but lately I have seen a slight pattern starting to form. I'd managed on a separate single occasion to write a note just saying 'what's going on?' I do believe about spirits and such but i do not think this is supernatural. When i woke up again i looked for the note and all that i got was a small sketched arrow and a name, Clare. I am bloody terrified, It feels like i do fall asleep but sometimes i feel exhausted when i wake up, I wanted to speak to my parents but they would think I was fruity and my boyfriend has said that I on occasion act very, very differently. I have been thinking of seeing a physiologist (hope i spelled that right), but they cost a fortune where i live. Can i get some free advice. Please...I AM SCARED OUT OF MY WITS!!!!!!! more

Resolved Question: Why wouldn't Socialism be the best and the middle ground between Capitalism & Communism?

Capitalism - An economic system based on the “Survival of the fittest”. Socialism – An economic system based on “You get your share no matter what your contribution is”. Communism – An economic system based on “You put in your fair share, you get your fair share”. Resolved Question: can you help plz in this regard i nedd help in this plz?

1.John, Mohan and Juliet intend to set up in business together. They plan to open a garden centre, Wonders of Garden, to which they will contribute varying amounts of capital and expertise. They formed the business without any formal agreement and were trading under the name of Wonders of Garden. On day there was an advertisement in the national newspaper stating that: “Excellent rare Bonsai trees are available at low prices, £20.00 each, first person willing to pay for the whole lot secures them. Minimum ages of the trees are 5 years and free from any disease. Sale starts on 21/12/09 at 9am. Interested, call 020722255544 or No.1 Bonsai Street, London W1 1WW.” John saw the advertisement and unilaterally decided to buy the whole lot. He sets of early morning on 21.12.09 to be the first person in order to secure the trees. John was the first person but the seller, Silly told him that the trees were sold to Sally when she called in on 19.12.09. John was very upset and wanted to sue Silly for breach of contract. Advise John as to whether there is a valid formation of contract. Explain all the reasons briefly. Your answer should be supported with the relevant case decisions on the basis of which you are going to test the validity of the contract in the above scenario.B. Explain different types of business agreement and legal capacity of the contracting parties. more

Resolved Question: ok probate lawyers here is what is told to me......?

I quote "Once I sign over the deed there is no wait time. It is yours free and clear and so are the bills". Lots of unknowns here. You see I am inheriting a house and my sister and I are co-reps and co-beneficiaries on everything else. (It's not as stacked as it seems, she will inherit the other parents house). Since June 8th she has preached, the deed will be LAST. Now suddenly after a meeting with her lawyer yesterday, before travelling 300 miles to her home, the plan is she may sign the deed of distribution and get it notarized where she lives and SOON, not last. She seems to assume that her signature only, is enough for me to own the house. I'm a rep. too and have to sign the deed of distribution, and the contents of the house and the bank accounts have not been distributed. She acts like her signature, the same day she signs, whether the form takes days or weeks to get filed, relieves the estate of it's bills. My feeling was the day the name changes on the deed is the day we prorate the bills between old owner (estate) and new owner. The only probate deadline we have is to close probate by next July. She acts like her signature is the end. She needs my bank papers to legally get her share of the IRA's and she needs my signature to close the estate expense account since both signatures are required on the checks. As an example, the notarized signature could be coming cross country, the postal service won't let you file for lost mail for 21 business days, so her contention that her signature is immediate transfer of deed is questioned. I might refuse to sign the deed of distribution based on the "details," She's played this secrecy game for months so I'm not being told all........unlikely.without a doubt? if we both must sign the deed of distribution how does her signature only, seal things. more

Resolved Question: how many lies has the RNC told about health care reform?

how many lies has the RNC told about healthcare reform? (http://www.newsweek.com/id/214254/output… The Five Biggest Lies in the Health Care Debate By Sharon Begley | NEWSWEEK Published Aug 29, 2009 From the magazine issue dated Sep 7, 2009 To the credit of opponents of health-care reform, the lies and exaggerations they're spreading are not made up out of whole cloth—which makes the misinformation that much more credible. Instead, because opponents demand that everyone within earshot (or e-mail range) look, say, "at page 425 of the House bill!," the lies take on a patina of credibility. Take the claim in one chain e-mail that the government will have electronic access to everyone's bank account, implying that the Feds will rob you blind. The 1,017-page bill passed by the House Ways and Means Committee does call for electronic fund transfers—but from insurers to doctors and other providers. There is zero provision to include patients in any such system. Five other myths that won't die: You'll have no choice in what health benefits you receive. The myth that a "health choices commissioner" will decide what benefits you get seems to have originated in a July 19 post at blog.flecksoflife.com, whose homepage features an image of Obama looking like Heath Ledger's Joker. In fact, the House bill sets up a health-care exchange—essentially a list of private insurers and one government plan—where people who do not have health insurance through their employer or some other source (including small businesses) can shop for a plan, much as seniors shop for a drug plan under Medicare part D. The government will indeed require that participating plans not refuse people with preexisting conditions and offer at least minimum coverage, just as it does now with employer-provided insurance plans and part D. The requirements will be floors, not ceilings, however, in that the feds will have no say in how generous private insurance can beNo chemo for older Medicare patients. The threat that Medicare will give cancer patients over 70 only end-of-life counseling and not chemotherapy—as a nurse at a hospital told a roomful of chemo patients, including the uncle of a NEWSWEEK reporter—has zero basis in fact. It's just a vicious form of the rationing scare. The House bill does not use the word "ration." Nor does it call for cost-effectiveness research, much less implementation—the idea that "it isn't cost-effective to give a 90-year-old a hip replacement." The general claim that care will be rationed under health-care reform is less a lie and more of a non-disprovable projection (as is Howard Dean's assertion that health-care reform will not lead to rationing, ever). What we can say is that there is de facto rationing under the current system, by both Medicare and private insurance. No plan covers everything, but coverage decisions "are now made in opaque ways by insurance companies," says Dr. Donald Berwick of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. A related myth is that health-care reform will be financed through $500 billion in Medicare cuts. This refers to proposed decreases in Medicare increases. That is, spending is on track to reach $803 billion in 2019 from today's $422 billion, and that would be dialed back. Even the $560 billion in reductions (which would be spread over 10 years and come from reducing payments to private Medicare advantage plans, reducing annual increases in payments to hospitals and other providers, and improving care so seniors are not readmitted to a hospital) is misleading: the House bill also gives Medicare $340 billion more over a decade. The money would pay docs more for office visits, eliminate copays and deductibles for preventive care, and help close the "doughnut hole" in the Medicare drug benefit, explains Medicare expert Tricia Neuman of the Kaiser Family Foundation. Illegal immigrants will get free health insurance. The House bill doesn't give anyone free health care (though under a 1986 law illegals who can't pay do get free emergency care now, courtesy of all us premium paying customers or of hospitals that have to eat the cost). Will they be eligible for subsidies to buy health insurance? The House bill says that "individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States" will not be allowed to receive subsidies. The claim that taxpayers will wind up subsidizing health insurance for illegal immigrants has its origins in the defeat of an amendment, offered in July by Republican Rep. Dean Heller of Nevada, to require those enrolling in a public plan or seeking subsidies to purchase private insurance to have their citizenship verified. Flecksoflife.com claimed on July 19 that "HC [health care] will be provided 2 all non US citizens, illegal or otherwise." Rep. Steve King of Iowa spread the claim in a USA Today op-ed on Aug. 20, calling the explicit prohibition on such coverage "functionally meaningless" absent mandatory citizenship checks, and it's now gone viral. Resolved Question: when asking a business for a donation towards a project, where do I find the address?

I have my letter written and a couple businesses who I plan to mail them to, but I don't know exactly where to send it because I know some have specific addresses for that. I plan to ask Best Buy, Circuit City, and Canon... if anyone could find the address, that would be absolutely fabulous (and if anyone cares to help out a little more, would you mind critiquing my letter??) To Whom It May Concern: This summer I spent away from home at an academic program I was accepted into for five weeks, learning about the arts in photography. From it, I was not only given an intense education about my art form, but also about leadership. This program inspired me to start a leadership project to bring art to my community. Starting in January, I plan to take on the challenge of starting a fundraiser, through the arts, to raise awareness for the Invisible Children Foundation. This project will support the efforts in stopping war in Uganda. It will also go towards the children there, equipping them with necessities and an education. My goal in this fundraiser is to raise $600 in this first attempt. My school and teachers are assisting me in making this project successful. With every entry, the $10 from each person will help reach this goal. I would greatly appreciate your help in this project by donating two Canon Rebels for the winners of this contest to assist by encouraging more to enter. Any other donations I will gladly accept. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you consider being my sponsor, I will personally let you know how my project goes. You can find more information about the Invisible Children Foundation by going on their website: www.invisiblechildren.com. Please feel free to ask if you have any additional questions. Sincerely, :D***This summer I spent at an academic program that I was accepted into for five weeks, learning about the arts in photography...*** more

Resolved Question: If the new Health Care Bill is so good for us, why...?

won't Pelosi let us read it, and why didn't she tell us about all the new taxes? Here they all are, with a brief description and page number: • Employer Mandate Excise Tax (Page 275): If an employer does not pay 72.5 percent of a single employee’s health premium (65 percent of a family employee), the employer must pay an excise tax equal to 8 percent of average wages. Small employers (measured by payroll size) have smaller payroll tax rates of 0 percent (<$500,000), 2 percent ($500,000-$585,000), 4 percent ($585,000-$670,000), and 6 percent ($670,000-$750,000). • Individual Mandate Surtax (Page 296): If an individual fails to obtain qualifying coverage, he must pay an income surtax equal to the lesser of 2.5 percent of modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) or the average premium. MAGI adds back in the foreign earned income exclusion and municipal bond interest. • Medicine Cabinet Tax (Page 324): Non-prescription medications would no longer be able to be purchased from health savings accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs), or health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs). Insulin excepted. • Cap on FSAs (Page 325): FSAs would face an annual cap of $2500 (currently uncapped). • Increased Additional Tax on Non-Qualified HSA Distributions (Page 326): Non-qualified distributions from HSAs would face an additional tax of 20 percent (current law is 10 percent). This disadvantages HSAs relative to other tax-free accounts (e.g. IRAs, 401(k)s, 529 plans, etc.) • Denial of Tax Deduction for Employer Health Plans Coordinating with Medicare Part D (Page 327): This would further erode private sector participation in delivery of Medicare services. • Surtax on Individuals and Small Businesses (Page 336): Imposes an income surtax of 5.4 percent on MAGI over $500,000 ($1 million married filing jointly). MAGI adds back in the itemized deduction for margin loan interest. This would raise the top marginal tax rate in 2011 from 39.6 percent under current law to 45 percent—a new effective top rate. • Excise Tax on Medical Devices (Page 339): Imposes a new excise tax on medical device manufacturers equal to 2.5 percent of the wholesale price. It excludes retail sales and unspecified medical devices sold to the general public. • Corporate 1099-MISC Information Reporting (Page 344): Requires that 1099-MISC forms be issued to corporations as well as persons for trade or business payments. Current law limits to just persons for small business compliance complexity reasons. Also expands reporting to exchanges of property. • Delay in Worldwide Allocation of Interest (Page 345): Delays for nine years the worldwide allocation of interest, a corporate tax relief provision from the American Jobs Creation Act • Limitation on Tax Treaty Benefits for Certain Payments (Page 346): Increases taxes on U.S. employers with overseas operations looking to avoid double taxation of earnings. • Codification of the “Economic Substance Doctrine” (Page 349): Empowers the IRS to disallow a perfectly legal tax deduction or other tax relief merely because the IRS deems that the motive of the taxpayer was not primarily business-related. • Application of “More Likely Than Not” Rule (Page 357): Publicly-traded partnerships and corporations with annual gross receipts in excess of $100 million have raised standards on penalties. If there is a tax underpayment by these taxpayers, they must be able to prove that the estimated tax paid would have more likely than not been sufficient to cover final tax liability. I know Liberals still think the Government is here to help...the only question I have is who? Us...or themselves?Oh...and here is where you will find the IRS will come after you if you do not, and I quote from the bill, "ACCEPTABLE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE." ‘‘PART VIII—HEALTH CARE RELATED TAXES ‘‘SUBPART A. TAX ON INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT ACCEPTABLE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE." 22 ‘‘Subpart A—Tax on Individuals Without Acceptable 23 Health Care Coverage page 296. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my letter to President Obama?

Dear President Obama: I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico , and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following: 1. Free medical care for my entire family. 2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not. 3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English. 4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers. 5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history. 6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school. 7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch. 8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services. 9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. 10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer 11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put US. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals. 12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start. 13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say a critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy. 14. I want to receive free food stamps. 15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies. 16. I'll need Income tax credits so although I don't pay Mexican Taxes, I'll receive money from the government. 17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov't pays $ 4,500 to help me buy a new car. 18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who come to the U.S. from Mexico . I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. Thank you so much for your kind help. You the man!!! Joe American Cincinnati, OH more

Resolved Question: Do you think the Obama WH is trying to nudge citizens into doing preferred behavior?

Basically instead of writing legislation that gives people the option to opt in, you instead write the legislation so that people are in by default and must opt out. This seems to imply that the govt. knows better what's best for the people than the people themselves. The "default" would be for all the stupid people not smart enough to opt in on their own. Do you think this is a good way to write legislation?? http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20091028/us_time/08599193278900 The classic example of the power of the default is the opt-out 401(k) savings plan. In a 2001 study, only 36% of the participants signed up for a retirement savings plan when they had to opt in - even though their employers were matching their contributions. Free money, and only 36% took it! But when participants were automatically signed up for the same plan but given the chance to opt out, 86% of them stuck with it. Scholars have found similar status-quo results with organ donations. If we have to sign up, very few of us become organ donors. If we have to opt out, most of us remain organ donors. Similarly, when our electronic gadgets come with the energy-saving auto-power-down function enabled, we're cool with that; if we have to enable it ourselves, we rarely bother. (See 10 players in health-care reform.) This kind of behavior doesn't fit into neoclassical economic models, which assume that human beings are rational agents who act in their own best interests. In the real world, human beings are human beings. Sometimes we're too dumb to know our own best interests. Sometimes we're too lazy to slog through the forms to figure out our own best interests. Often we're conformists; we assume the default must be the default because that's what most people do, and we're desperate not to be social deviants. These insights are at the core of the challenge to traditional neoclassicism posed by behavioral economics, which has burst into prominence in the Obama Administration. Budget director Peter Orszag is so obsessed with defaults that he used to bring a copy of that 401(k) study to all his meetings; chief regulator Cass Sunstein co-authored a book called Nudge that's all about defaults and other noncoercive policies that can promote desired behaviors. The Administration has pushed one nudge after another, from simplified financial-aid forms after studies showed they could increase college-attendance rates to automatic savings plans for small businesses. It even doled out our payroll-tax cuts in the stimulus bill by decreasing our weekly withholding rather than cutting us big lump-sum checks, because the research suggested we'd be less likely to notice it and more likely to spend it.guru............Don't you see a difference between educated individuals and a mass of drones?? more

Resolved Question: Would you vote for me?

It seems us Americans are not interested in Obamas plans for health reforms. My proposal is To encourage more individual responsibility. To do this I would introduce a Voucher system for schools giving you the choice of sending your kids to many of the public schools or private schools that best suit your kids. Low taxes business and personal say about 10 - 15% flat rate Leave Healthcare as it is as it seems we want to keep it as it is Privatise some forms of the state to allow enterprise and more free market What do you think? more

Resolved Question: What is a good name for a political party?

Here are my beliefs A.Healthcare •Every American should have affordable health care. America is the only democratic, developed, and wealthy nation on this earth that doesn’t provide health care for ALL its citizens. Today, 47 million Americans are uninsured and 8 million of those are children. This should be unacceptable. Through President Barack Obama’s Health Care Bill, we will achieve the healthcare crisis that is literally strangling the life out of Americans. B.Energy and Environment •The biggest crisis in the history of this man is occurring right now. Because of our skyrocketing carbon emissions since the Industrial Revolution, global warming is occurring, which has and WILL wreak havoc on the earth. Because it is unprofitable for businesses to implement energy reform, the United States must provide incentives for businesses to use “Green” technologies. The United States must also provide a minimum fuel mileage for all US cars, which would not only help the environment but help US auto makers to reform. C.Foreign Policy •Strong relations with Europe must be continued as well as trying to strengthen relations with Russia and China. The United States also must continue to support Israel, but not without alienating the rest of the Middle East. The US cannot support Israel with weapons, but more or less our moral support for lack of better words. D.National Security A plan to withdraw COMPLETELY all American troops from Iraq in one year must be drawn up and implemented. American ground troops must be removed from Afghanistan because the terrorists are not the entire country; they are in the mountains. Strike teams must be drawn up to kill the terrorists. E.Civil Rights and Liberties Gay Marriage must be legalized in the form of a Constitutional Amendment. A voucher system for schools in America would increase the quality of education for all in America. Parents would choose where there child went to school (private or public) with a government voucher. A free market would be created of the school systems, increasing education for all. F.Science and Technology •Stem Cell research must be government subsidized thousands of times what it is now. I also support abortion fully and completely. G.National Debt •To help bring in government revenue, prostitution, gambling, and marijuana needs to be legalized across the country. Taxing the hell out of it would help make a significant dent in the national debt. The three of them are not legalized across the country and are burgeoning industries that make billions together. I was thinking "The New Federalist Party" more

Resolved Question: Health insurance companies donate heavily to both Republicans and Democrats. Is it no surprise then that?

both major parties are pushing mandatory insurance for all Americans? This is another case of big business working with big government to screw over Americans. Why is there no outrage over the fact that our federal government is forcing us to buy a service? Not to mention the fact that before the federal government got involved in health insurance there was no problem. In the 1950's health care was so cheap that people could regularly have a doctor make a house call and see every member of the family and easily afford it. Then the feds got involved in the 1960's and created Medicare reducing the out of pocket costs of old people to see the doctor. So more old people went to the doctor for non life threatening issues. Thus the demand for doctors went up. But now doctors had to make sure they were complying with government required regulations, had to work through red tape to see patients, fill out government required forms at the risk of a fine or penalty, and see more patients. So the supply of doctors went down. Demand up+supply down= prices up. So the government causes the high prices of health care due to their poor central planning and manipulation of the free market. Insurance companies become necessary for people to even afford routine doctor visits. Now the insurance companies donate heavily to democrats and republicans pushing to make insurance mandatory. And the people are all caught up in the fight wondering which government program they want to make health insurance affordable again, forgetting the fact that had the government not been involved in the first place, they could easily afford to see a doctor without even health insurance. What do you guys think? It seems to be a common assumption that health insurance companies only donate to republicans in an effort to stop health insurance reform. This is not true, they donate heavily to both parties.http://www.campaignmoney.com/Health_Insurance.aspWhile the contributions may be slighter higher to democrats, it is obvious that both parties are in cahoots with the insurance companies. The only Republican who is proposing getting the government out of the situation and fixing the problem is Ron Paul.Bill- If that is true then why is it a fact that the more regulated the health care industry has become, the more like the socialist model that you aspire to, the higher the prices have gotten? And why was it so cheap before the government got involved? When it strictly was a for profit system? When the doctors had to provide to the customers what they wanted, or they would go out of business.Iwasmy- What government programs is ron paul proposing?Iwasmy- What does ron paul want to spend money on? Why are you lying? Ron Paul's solution is to not spend one more penny on health care. He wants to get the government out of it. more

Resolved Question: Did you see this interesing letter sent to 0bama?

Dear Mr. President: I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. 9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico, but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. 10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer. 11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put U S. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals. 12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start. 13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. Thank you so much for your kind help. You're the man!!! more

3. All Mexico government forms need to also be printed in English. 4. I want my kids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers. 5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history. 6. I want my kids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school. 7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch. 8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services. 9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. 13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say a critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who come to the U.S. from Mexico . I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. Thank you so much for your kind help. Sincerely, U.S. Citizen & Taxpayer more

Voting Question: Could I get into Wharton?

I'm hoping to apply to uPenn Wharton next year (and possibly the Huntsman program with the duel degree in business and international studies) for ED. If i chose to apply to Huntsman, I would certainly also apply to Wharton without the particular program. With the following, is it worth my time and money to apply or would it be a waste? Academics: GPA: 5.37 (under my school's weighted system, the max is 5.65) - This translates to a 4.0 otherwise. Rank: 1/146, all 3 years so far Grades have been consistently A's and A+'s in every subject I have taken. I have the most rigorous courseload my school offers and take all Honors in every subject for which it is offered. APs: US History, Calculus AB, Physics, English Literature, Psychology (Unfortunately, this is all my school offers) I will have taken 4 full years of French and 3 full years in Spanish, with some independent study in each to improve my skills. SATs: 2260 (M 760, CR 750, W 750) SAT IIs: Math (Level 2): 765, World History: 770, French: 775, Biology: 750 Extra-Circulars: [Note, My school offers VERY few EC activities. I tried forming an FBLA, but only one other person in the entire school would join, no matter what I tried. Therefore, my ECs are limited.] National Merit Scholar Class President (10), Treasurer (9, 11, 12) National Honor Society: Treasurer (11, 12) Academic Decathlon Cross Country (11, 12 [Captain 12]) Track (11, 12) Volunteer at local Food Pantry Volunteer at local Hospital Volunteer at local Special Needs Pre-School Spent Summer between sophomore and junior year in Sweden on a prestigious national scholarship awarded to only 16 people. Summer between Junior and Senior Year: 3 weeks at Brown University Pre-College, Classes in Business and Finance I plan to put a lot into my essays and really convey my character. I am heavily interested in politics, international affairs and business. I spend every free moment I have reading international news and business news. That's why i'm so interested in possibly the Hunstman program. I wish I could have done more in my ECs to show this, like volunteering abroad, international travel programs, internationally focused summer programs, a foreign exchange, but monetary concerns made all these impossible for my family. I will have my recommendation from one of my favorite teachers and the best in the school. She was my English teacher as a Sophomore and will be my AP english teacher this year. She has received several awards and chairs the teacher certification committee for the state. I have learned the most from her and she has really taught me to be a critical thinker and to develop my higher level thinking skills. I know she will write me an excellent letter of recommendation. So… do I have any chance whatsoever? I know I'm competing against people way more qualified than me, who went to the most elite private schools, have like 10 AP's and 2350 SAT scores, have spent summers building schools in developing countries and are national debate, Model UN, FBLA, etc champions. The number 1 rank is held alone and has not fluctuated at all. The SAT scores are messed up, the papers were scrambled. Here are the real scores: Math (Level 2): 770, World History: 770, French: 760, Biology: 750 more

Resolved Question: How do you feel about a felon who served in prison as Obama's Green Job Czar?

"Just a couple of days ago I wrote about President Obama’s black red “Green Jobs” czar Van Jones who came up through the ranks as a racial radical arrested in the Rodney King riots, embraced communism while in jail, formed a socialist collective which championed the ideas of Marx and Lenin, and has now seized on on the environmentalist movement as a vehicle for his extremist ideas." The East Bay Express has a very lengthy article about Jones and his activist past, written in 2005. Here are a few telling excerpts: But that wasn’t enough to assuage his anger. Convinced that American society needed a wake-up call on race, Jones abandoned his plan to become a journalist, concluding that he would rather make news than report it. “If I’d been in another country, I probably would have joined some underground guerrilla sect,” he said. …while Jones was observing the first large rally since the lifting of the city’s state of emergency [during the Rodney King riots], he got swept up in mass arrests. It was a turning point in his life. Jones had planned to move to Washington, DC, and had already landed a job and an apartment there. But in jail, he said, “I met all these young radical people of color — I mean really radical, communists and anarchists. And it was, like, ‘This is what I need to be a part of.’” Although he already had a plane ticket, he decided to stay in San Francisco. “I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary.” In the months that followed, he let go of any lingering thoughts that he might fit in with the status quo. “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th,” he said. “By August, I was a communist.“ "We have long seen the close connections between the worldwide environmentalist movement and Marxism. They have long shared the same anti-business, anti-free market, anti-freedom agenda and methods of thuggish intimidation. Like many Marxists, Jones has recognized that the environmentalist movement makes a great vehicle to advance Marxism." http://www.dakotavoice.com/2009/07/obamas-black-red-green-czar/ SO lets see, Obama has 30 some Czars that answer to NO ONE but Obama, and now Obama uses his "great judgement" to select this street thug to run the Green Jobs (whatever sham that is). So much for the "transparency" of the Obama Regime. more

Resolved Question: Which would 'stimulate' the economy more effectively; "Tax Breaks" or "Tax Takes"? Which paradigm works best?

Reagan applied tax breaks at the top of the economic "food chain" and we all watched in amazement as it "trickled down" in the form of product price reductions to end users (consumers) and increased employment which in-turn resulted in greater tax revenue going to the federal government. Obama's plan is to apply tax-takes against "the rich" (manufacturers & employers), which will also trickle down in the form of an increase in the cost of doing business, resulting in higher costs at the cash register, and a loss of jobs as employers streamline to remain competitive against overseas competition. Is it axiomatic that money is bait. Where you put the money spout will determine what you get more of? If you point the money spout where the producers hang out, you get more producers and the products they create (the only true measurement of wealth), If you point the spout at entitlements like free health care and free welfare and other free social services, you get more people trying to stand under the spout where the money comes out. The number of "entitlement-minded" people will multiply until the vacuum of available benefits is equalized. There's never going to be a shortage of people who want to stand under the spout where the money comes out. The trick is to reward endeavors that will result in a higher national standard of living and increased entrepreneurial opportunity. What, therefore, is the more effective method to solve the economic meltdown of 2008? more

Resolved Question: A sweet, generous man builds a home and an artists studio adjacent to the family home for his wife’s parents.?

they live there free of charge. The wife runs off with another man, her parents still live with the abandoned husband. The sweet man works extra hard to pay the mortgage on the two properties and only manages to scrape by. The ex inlaws are able to afford a couple of foreign holidays and a new car every year and are still not satisfied. Recently the sweet man found out that the ex inlaws are planning to rent out the studio and run a business from the premises inviting the public onto his property. The sweet man was not in formed of this, he found out by chance. He is a sweet and generous man and although his wife has the room to accommodate her parents her new boyfriend does not want this. I think the sweet man should lay down some ground rules and I have tried to help by writing the ground rules down. I want to know if what I have written sounds fare, please comment. The original plan that I agreed to was for us to live and work together as one big happy family here. I was happy for workshops to be run and I was happy to build the studio for that specific purpose. Understand though that this was something I agreed to when your daughter and I were living together as man and wife. The fact of the matter is that I no longer see your daughtere as my wife and all previous agreements regarding how you use the property have changed. I do not want you to use the building as a means to prophet financially. This includes using the address to sell your crafts, hiring out an area of the property, running workshops, in simple terms you are to only use the property as a dwelling. My girlfriend is an artist and I hope it goes without saying that she will be welcome to use the studio on the understanding that it is a shared space. He thinks what I have written is harsh, I want to know what others think. Oh, he can not charge the ex inlaws rent because this means they will have rights. more

Resolved Question: Why do so many people hate the 5%ers of the world, perhaps a correlation with the hate for America?

Politically, this country feeds off of what we do to the top five percent of the population, why we haven't done more to them and/or how they haven't helped out enough. Why the hate? Is this underlying hate due to jealousy or envy? Could this be the same reason why so many countries hate the United States of America which is theoretically in the top 5% for the world as are most citizens in it? Do the hates stem from the same feelings? If you look at the big picture, the economically successful five percent help pay for 70% of the budget for this government while the other 95% pay the other 30%. Why is this not enough. The few paying for the many, the strong holding up the the weak. The bottom 10% actually don't contribute anything yet get money back from the government in the form of income credit. My business supplies this country with 10 additional jobs, those jobs allow my workers to feed and house their families. I pay their social security taxes, healthcare, give to their retirement plans, etc. However, I am thought as the big bad rich guy. Why is this? Is it because I took a risk and made something of myself in this life and have also supplied that success to 10 other people? What have you done? I am all for taxes to help this government in basic needs but how far can we lean on the "supposedly rich" before they break. I already have friends who have fired all their employees and just work for themselves because they actually can not afford to be rich anymore (being self-employed paying your own insurance, ss, medi, income, etc.) I just can't afford to give you guys jobs anymore. When will America learn that it can not continue to lean on the self-employed businessmen who supply this country with the most jobs. Too many are already revolting and living the free ride out with their nest egg. How many are to follow? more

Resolved Question: Isn't Obama's bad economic plan as obvious as Barney Fwank wearing nothing but a glow-n-the-dark thong?

It seems that good ideas from this administration is like trying to get Mohandas Gandhi to agree to become an "Extreme Kung Fu Fighter"! I mean...it just ain't happening! Other ideas: What about lower taxes that are cripling business all over the country. We pay some of the highest taxes in the world yet are expected to compete in a global market place. UAW Wages: Let's be real, what do you pay a person with a HS education working 40 hrs per week who turns a bolt for a living? When $1500 per vehicle is nothing but health care cost for a line-worker and retirement benifits that would make a king blush. These facts alone prove those wages are way out of line and the UAW is budging. Other ideas: YES, allow those union workers & unions to form their own company and make "Union cars" They have all the answers so why not set them free in the market place in their own vehicles. just a few of my ideas....whut ya think answer and I'll answer you right back.....if you want to sling mud I'm not interested...but I will answer intelligent questions thanks more

Resolved Question: Quickstar Productions? Does this sound legit to you?

My band received an invitation yesterday to participate in a compilation cd these guys put together called 11th Hour Confession. The minute we got it we were skeptical and have been looking into it. If anyone else has ever gotten this same message or has any information about these guys, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Here is the message we recieved... Hi, I heard your song, “NEW Take Me With You COVER” and I am very impressed with it. We are currently working on a benefit compilation CD titled “11th hour confession”. It will feature emo artists from across the scene. I believe that your song would be a perfect fit on this project and I would be honored to have you take part. My name is Joe Bird, and I am a project manager with Quickstar Productions, as well as a musician. Quickstar Productions is a company that specializes in designing music-marketing campaigns and supplying digital distribution services for record labels and independent artists. In 2005, Quickstar Productions released its first Comp CD as a way to promote unsigned artists. This CD was extraordinarily successful in accomplishing its mission! Over the years the company has built off that success and perfected a marketing plan to maximize exposure for the artist. Quickstar Productions is based out of Baltimore, MD and is an active member of the Maryland Better Business Bureau. “11th Hour Confessions” is a CD designed to raise money and awareness for the charity called, To Write Love On Her Arms. They are a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those that need help with depression, addiction, and suicide, find help. Over the past few years they have been able to help thousands. We really want this CD to benefit those affected by depression, self injury and suicidal intentions, but we also want it to be advantageous to the artists on it as well. Therefore we have designed a complete marketing plan for the CD. “11th Hour Confessions” will be marketed and made available in the following ways: 1. PHYSICAL SALES: You will receive 50 copies of the CD to sell at whatever price you choose. These will be professionally produced, retail ready CD’s. We recommend selling them for $8. That way you can make $400. You keep 100% of your sales. This is a great way to get more merchandise to sell at your shows and also a way to target other fans in your genre. The idea is that when each artist sells their 50 copies, the other artists on the CD will have their music exposed to other fans of your genre of music. Therefore, your song will be exposed to many new listeners. 2. DIGITAL SALES: The compilation will be made available for sale in all digital stores including iTunes, Rhapsody, Wal-Mart, Napster, and Amazon. Your song will also be available as a ringtone that your fans may purchase. You will receive 50% of profits generated. 3. EXPOSURE: The CD will be sent to record labels, marketing, and management firms. Along with the CD, a booklet featuring your picture and bio will be made available so they can learn a little bit more about you. In addition, free promo copies will be handed out at concerts in the Baltimore/Washington area. Quickstar Productions will also promote the album through the use of MySpace. 4. RADIO: The CD will be sent to college and internet radio stations and be featured on various podcasts throughout the world. 5. NETWORKING: Developing a network with other musicians is key to ones success. This comp CD is a chance to do so. You will be provided with all the other artists’ information before the CD is released so that you can start show swapping with one another, networking and helping each other out. To have your song included on our upcoming compilation CD please visit our website, Quickstarproductions com, to download the submission forms. We do not charge a fee to be on “11th Hour Confession” but we do ask that you purchase 50 CD’s to distribute at cost ($165). That way we can cover the costs of the project so that as large of portion of the proceeds can be donated as possible. This will be the only cost to you. One of the most important parts of this project is getting the CD into the hands of fans. The more CD’s that you are able to distribute the more exposure everyone gets. Please check out www QuickstarProductions com for more info on this compilation. Since we plan to release this CD as soon as possible, we ask that all submissions be returned by March 15th. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions. We appreciate your interest in helping To Write Love On Her Arms help others. Rock on, Joe Bird joe @ quickstarproductions com quickstarproductions com Office 443//552//7058 PS. If you would like to check out past editions of “11th Hour Confessions” they are available on iTunes, Napster, eMusic, Amazon, etc. more
