ChemRisk Annnounces European Partnership to Aid North American
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ChemRisk has formed an international partnership with Helsinki-based REACHLaw to assist North American businesses required to comply with complex new European Union chemical registration requirements.
The requirements--mandated under the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals legislation (REACH)--demand all chemical substances manufactured in, or imported to, the EU be pre-registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) between June 1 and November 30, 2008. Companies that fail to pre-register with ECHA will lose their ability to do business in the EU on December 1, 2008.
"REACH was enacted a year ago, but many enterprises have been slow to develop a strategy. Now they've got six months to pre-register," said E. more

HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd (SHKP) said its corporate decision-making mechanism and daily business operations will not be affected by a dispute among the controlling Kwok brothers.
"Sun Hung Kai Properties is a well-run and well-managed public corporation. Our daily business operations and decision-making mechanism won't be affected by recent incidents," SHKP vice chairman Raymond Kwok told a press briefing.
He was referring to a long-running family feud, which heated up recently and raised concerns over the developer's prospects.
Hong Kong's High Court today dismissed a bid by SHKP chairman and chief executive officer Walter Kwok for a permanent injunction to stop the company's board from voting on whether to remove him.
"We welcome the court decision on the matter," SHKP vice chairman Thomas Kwok told reporters. more

My semi-planned career path includes finishing high school, then getting a bachelor's in advertising through 4 years of college. But when I was job searching for high school jobs in business/marketing/advertising, a lot of companies posted "entry level jobs" with only a "high school education required," stating that training will be provided and promotions available as you gain experience and education. I was wondering, is it typical/normal/wise to go from high school to an entry level job and basically getting an education by going from entry level job to higher positions with on-the-job training? This budget proposal is too INWARD looking... the way i sees it, it's like fixing a problem or crowd pleasing probably to tame the disgrunt on the ground that was lately the talk of the town about foreigh talent, job security & the identity crisis for a Singaporean, so to speak... There are largely NO bold initiatives from this budget proposal to create new sectors & businesses hence job creation to drive the economy in the next 5 years plan. Sadly, the focus was all about spending $bils to drive productivity which i felt the result will not yield much impact if you spend that amount of money to create new sectors to value-add to the existing sectors contributing to the GDP. There is a limit to how productivity can yield positive results such as the construction sector the govt had name for instance...to put it bluntly, you cannot expect to compare productivity of japanese construction sector vis-a-vis spore's... simply because of cultural, mindset & attitude differences. Even if spore's construction productivity increases or benefited from such program, the yield won't be large. If that happens, that is simply MONEY NOT WELL SPENT. Initiatives, i sees fit, should be to invest the budget deficits to into new sectors such as "renewables", for instance. Renewables, a "big" term to be a step ahead to reduce Spore's carbon footprint which is excessively large by int'l standards. These clinics would be staffed by 3 physicians each (paid $166,000) per year and 10 Red Cross Volunteers (paid in refundable tax credits at $100/day), and one or two Pharmacists, or PA's to dispense prescription meds from the on-site pharmacy. Security would be handled by Kroll or Blackwater or Pinkerton's or somebody like that on a roving and on-call short notice basis, so one security team could cover 4 or 5 clinics in a big city. The cost of renting the office space and the cost of the medications, and disposables, and tests, and electric, and water would be additonal costs. 2500 clinics, fully staffed and supplied for $75 Billion per year, and this includes the Red Cross's fees for management of the system. Since this is government provided health care on a good samaritan basis with no charge to the patient, there is triple legal immunity (soveriegn, samaritan, and charitable). The patient don't get to sue. But they do get some healthcare -- maybe not the Cadillac coverage but real good Primary Care -- which is crucial because it cures and it also prevents. The meds can be acquired through a piggyback order on the VA's annual order, thereby getting an even bigger price break, maybe as good as Canada gets! 2) Now there's $25 Billion per year left to play with, how should that be used? Here's how: Use about $20 Billion to re-organize health insurance so that all insurors can offer coverage in all states, or most. Do not force insurors to insure people with pre-existing conditions. Let them run their insurance business along the regular lines and practices of insurance in the various states. In Maryland, we have a high risk pool, and all companies that sell insurance here must take a certain percentage of cases assigned out of the Maryland resident high risk pool. This amounts to a bearable not an unbearable burden for all the firms. The other $5 Billion would be used for Tort Reform. Getting a Federal standard for damages in medical malpractice cases, and then forcing those cases into the Federal Courts, so that trial lawyers couldn't suck the blood out of the solvency of the practice of medicine as they are doing now (author = member of ATLA -- the people I'm talking about = me). Once tort reform is well begun, there needs to be more careful and frequent Board Certification of physicians. The doctors have to get a lot better if they are to be freed from oppressive lawsuits. They get better by closer regulation instead of by being terrorized and made examples of by sharky lawyers. This would cause all medical fees to go down. Less insurance costs means better priced services for patients. This is one 10% Plan that I think would work 1000 times better than the Obama/Pelosi/Reid huge Break the Bank Megaplan. The Doctors for Hospitals are paid a salary and General practitioners otherwise known as GP, who operate their own business; their income is still based upon the number of patients they tend to. While the United Kingdom’s citizens hardly have to pay out of pocket for the work they need done, the other countries that are listed above have some out of pocket money they are forced to pay. Such as Japan, their average family premium is $280 every month, with the employers paying more than half. The Co-payments are 30 percent of the cost of a procedure. Now for the last, Germany has a whopping $750 per month average family premium; premiums are attached to patients' income. Co-payments, however are only 10 euros ($15) every three months; although some patients however, like pregnant women for example, are exempt from the co-payments. The government's first accounting of jobs tied to the $787 billion stimulus program claimed more than 30,000 positions paid for with recovery money. But that figure is overstated by least 5,000 jobs, or one in six, according to an Associated Press review of a sample of stimulus contracts. The AP review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two and sometimes more than four times; and other jobs were credited to stimulus spending when none was produced. For example: _ A company working with the Federal Communications Commission reported that stimulus money paid for 4,231 jobs, when about 1,000 were produced. _ A Georgia community college reported creating 280 jobs with recovery money, but none was created from stimulus spending. _ A Florida child care center said its stimulus money saved 129 jobs but used the money on raises for existing employees. There's no evidence the White House sought to inflate job numbers in the report. But administration officials seized on the 30,000 figure as evidence that the stimulus program was on its way toward fulfilling the president's promise of creating or saving 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year. The reporting problem could be magnified Friday when a much larger round of reports is expected to show hundreds of thousands of jobs repairing public housing, building schools, repaving highways and keeping teachers on local payrolls. But the White House promises many problems will be corrected in Friday's report. "I think you'll see a pretty good degree of accuracy," said Ed DeSeve, an Obama adviser helping to oversee the stimulus program. DeSeve said the administration is aware of problems with the early data. Agencies have been working with businesses that received the money to correct mistakes. Other errors discovered by the public also will be corrected, he said. "If there's an error that was made, let's get it fixed," DeSeve said. The White House released a statement early Thursday responding to the AP review, arguing what the administration said are the "real facts" about how jobs were counted in the stimulus data distributed two weeks ago. Yesterday I met with a representative of a home renovator (he claimed he was the owner) to discuss our plans to replace our kitchen. 1) he was late for the appointment, his office called at the time of the appointment to say he would be delayed about 20 minutes. He arrived 45 minutes later 2) I observed him pull into our driveway, but instead of getting out of the car and coming to the door, he sat out in the driveway talking on the phone for another 10m minutes. When I saw him finally get out of the car and move toward the front door, I went to greet him, but he remained at the foot of my door step still on the phone for another 10 minutes, which I found rather annoying. Finally he came up to the door and knocked which I further found annoying since I had already given up on greeting him at the door, and had gone back to my own business, but I dropped what I was doing and let him in to proceed with the meeting He apologized for being late, I said that it didn't bode well with me that he come more than 45 minutes late for a first meeting. He said something about at least he had his office call to let me know. I thought that calling at the time of the meeting is bad enough but to still be later than your new ETA isn't right either, I was mad but I dropped it. So we went into the kitchen, exchanged some ideas, he gave me a quote based on what we discussed, it seemed pretty fair to me, but my wife wasn't there so I asked for another meeting at a time than she could be there. We agreed on this comming Sunday morning at 10:00a. Now I want to cancel the meeting and forget about hiring him. I feel that part of the reason for this is because I was angry at him for being late, but I was EXTREMELY put off about what he had to say when I brought up the subject of references. In a nutshell he said he would provide me with references if it meant the difference between getting the job or not, but he hated to have his good customers bothered with reference calls. Please understand, he went on quite a bit on this subject giving examples to support his threory that references are a bad idea. I got the sence that it was as if he was trying to beat out a raging fire. Again I let it drop, and at the end of the day he walked out the door, and I had only his business card in my hand. No written quote, no references. BTW, I did a quick check at the local BBB website and found no data on his company name. They have no complaints registered withing the last 36 months, but they are not members either. The thing is, in the past I have done all of the renovations on my own, but I was younger then. (I will be 59 this January 2010). I completely renovated our main floor bathroom about three years ago. I didn't find it particularly challenging. The hard part was deciding on the tiles for the floors, and the walls, and I had the entire project finished in about 30 days start to finish. But this time our plans include some skylights, and changing the staircase to the basement. These are things I haven't done before, plus I have lost some of the fire in my gut that drives me on these tasks. But to make matters worse, this guy I spoke to yesterday said that they don't do skylights (they do everything else) plus he tried to talk me out of the changes to the staircase, I think he didn't want to take on that work either. I have spoken to two other renovators, but this latest guy is the first one I gave any serious consideration to. But now I am thinking I would rather just do it myself, and hire someone else to come in and do the things I can't manage on my own. I wonder if I am just getting cold feet on hiring someone, and putting the whole project in their hands. I hear so many horror stories about projects gone wrong, or they take all the money but don't finish the job. I have so little to go on without references from this guy, and so far everyone I have called have failed to provide me with a single reference. If I want a staff of women for educational instructors, whose to say I shouldn't be able to hire them? Again, if I have my own opinion that women are better nurturers than men, why shouldn't I have the right to hire them for the benefit of children? So what if someone else doesn't agree with how my business might be run? Do homosexuals care that most people don't agree with how they live their lives? Does the government care? No and (probably soon) no. And you could choose a black woman in the first example or an asian man in the second, but why should the government tell us who we can employ? In a world where freedom of choice is held as the highest virtue, why shouldn't this carry over into someone's business? And what makes the government's choice to consider race and sex right, but not the people's? Last time I checked, governments historically have always failed and the people failed with them. Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany, Rome, etc... If a business fails, the country doesn't fail, no tax payer is effected, only the employees and the owners. Not to mention everything even liberals purchase like cars, food, clothes, homes, etc... are all purchased on the freedom of which product in that category they like. The government never dictated which ones consumers should buy, everyone picks what they feel like is the best. Think about it, health care was never a free market. Medicare and Medicaid ruined the chance of a free market to establish for insurance companies. If medicare and medicaid didn't exist, health insurance would be like auto insurance, it's cheap, affordable, and efficient. Medicare/Medicaid, limit insurance companies to give plans to people of low income, since medicaid gives it out, and the middle class doesn't qualify for medicaid, and the insurance company can't give out a reasonable quote since it has nothing of low value to compare too. Example: McDonalds dollar menu burger is the cheapest, but the better quality burger places will sell theirs at a higher value, but not extremely high because the dollar menu burger is so cheap, causing them to be regulated by competition. Plus consumers dictate on what they're willing to purchase. Not to mention auto insurance rewards good drivers, because it gives their customers the incentive to be less of a liability to them. Example: Good Drivers discount, good student discount. If health insurance companies can be in any state, with out medicare and medicaid existing, they probably would reflect the same results as auto insurance, they probably would give a good health discount, because healthy customers cost them less, it also encourages the user to be healthy. Everyone essentially wins. There is a reason why Costco pushes so much for such low prices, health care can be the same if it was 100% private sector. i have been with my boyfriend for 4 years now. He has proven his love and loyalty; he will basically do anything for me. And also i love him so much and don’t want to lose him. When we were both in college everything was good. He was a computer science major and I was biology major. He loved helping with my homework. But about 2 years ago because of his job he had to travel to different states and he couldn’t go to school. But of course he came back to visit me. Now he is back because the company he was hoping was going to change our life was bankrupt and closed down. Now he is in school but he is not the same hard worker student anymore, he says he can’t study. i am preparing for my DAT exam because my plan was to become a dentist since I started school. But he is changed and he doesn’t care about my school and he always says that he is going to lose me I soon as I get into dental school. Of course I can tell he still loves me, but for example he always was sex when I want to study or I have a test. Also most importantly he became a little demanding and says my way or highway. So these guys are trying to get my boyfriend into this "business" where you open your own website and sell stuff such as tv's, other electronics, energy drinks, basically everything. so people order from your website and the original company for example "sony" would send you the tv and you would give it to the person who ordered it. "sony" would then get a portion of the price, you still making a profit. Supposedly this earns you a lot of money and there's people making like 2500 weekly.
