Wednesday Newspaper Review - Irish Business News and International

Mr Flavin was a Fyffes director and held insider information about a deterioration in Fyffes' business that was not freely available to the market when he sold DCC's stake in the company. Fyffes shares fell in value after it issued a profit warning, but not before Mr Flavin made a profit of some €85 million for DCC on the sale of its interest in the company.

After an ex-parte application by Mr Appleby yesterday, the High Court court set a hearing of his case for June 9th. The case is likely to examine the tax treatment of the Fyffes share sales by DCC, which were routed through a Dutch-resident company so as not to be liable to tax in Ireland on the profit.

In her original High Court ruling on the case, Ms Justice Mary Laffoy had rejected outright DCC's contention that it was the Dutch company, Lotus Green, and not Mr Flavin that executed the share trades. more

High-flying banker who didn't see glass ceiling

Appointed sales director in 2005, Eileen also took every opportunity to study while progressing her bank career and holds an MSc in Business Improvement, is a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants and a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers.

As chair of Business in the Community's Opportunity Now (NI) diversity campaign, Eileen is well aware of workplace issues. But it's debatable whether legislation alone can deliver. Nearly four decades after Equal Pay laws were first passed, women's earning power still lags behind, with factors such as child care responsibilities and part-time working patterns putting on the brakes.

Of over 3,000 recent discrimination cases, one third centred on gender issues — more than 30 years after the Sex Discrimination Act. more

Julie's Mary Whitehouse experience

With Big Brother's brazen nudity, Gordon Ramsay's bad language, and the soaps' racy storylines, Mary Whitehouse would probably be doing a 180-degree turn in her grave if she knew what was being shown on TV today.

"She would be campaigning about Big Brother now, definitely," says actress Julie Walters who dons a wig and Mary's trademark glasses to play the late moral campaigner and legendary battleaxe in a new one-off drama, based on Mary's clash with the BBC in the 1960s.

"With the sex, swearing, and just general sort of unbridled behaviour, I think she'd be really troubled about kids getting into that."

During the early 1960s when Mary, an ordinary Midlands housewife, first came to prominence, Britain's sexual revolution was in full swing and TV was being overhauled by BBC director general Sir Hugh Carleton Greene. more

Honeywell predicts bright future for 'synthetic vision' in

The technology was on display at the European Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition show this week in Geneva. It's one of the products being marketed to the wealthy customers — big corporations, Saudi princes, Russian oil tycoons and China's new millionaires — who are fueling a boom in private aircraft.

Synthetic vision brings together into one simulator-like display the same information that airline pilots obtain from an array of instruments and devices, depicting the terrain ahead with projections of the plane's flight path in current wind conditions.

Courier Business Plan Questions asked

Voting Question: I have been denied for a Canadian study permit...Shall I re-apply again to see what happens next?

A month ago, I applied for the study permit and just yesterday I received the documents from the courier service. A Letter of Refusal, the original copy of the Letter of Acceptance from the school and the Original Receipt of the processing fee. Reasons for the refusal are as follows: 1. I have insufficient ties with my country of residence. 2. I have not answered truthfully questions 12 and 13. 3. I have not answered that I will leave the country once completing my studies -> I remember noting that I will leave the country once completing on my study plan attached. My answers to the questions are 1. The fact to this matter is that I am a Bruneian-born-Korean. However, I had to return back to Korea for the military service and university..which I have fully completed my military service in Rep. of Korea Army. In addition, I do have a valid Korean passport, driver's licence and an ID card. These all-in-one-answer-pack proofs me that I am still a citizen of Korea. Why does the embassy needs to know if I have lived overseas and requires informations in regard to. What's their business to do with this very question? 2. Have I applied for any visas before? Yes, I applied once for a study permit to study in Toronto from the period of April 2003 to Dec 2004. However, this was way way back...and therefore I said No. 3. During the past 5 years, have I or family members lived in any other countries other than the country of residence for more than six months? Yes and No. Yes, as stated above since I am a Bruneian-born-Korean, living there for 18 yrs until high school. Besides this was way beyond ten years and not 5 years back story.. didn't know and still unsure to tick Yes or No to this question. Thus, I ticked No on my very first application. The only country I lived in the past five years more than six months was Canada. 2 years studying in Toronto. Apr 2003 ~ Dec 2004 I have also been on a business trip to Qatar, Doha (Middle East) for work...but this was only for 3 1/2 months.. Shall I say Yes to this question and write everything down? My course starts tomorrow (26th) which is a year long...and providing the fact that I have been refused a visa for the first time and re-applying for the new one will unlikely get me anywhere since I have been denied for the visa..I think they (the embassy) still do have the past record. I am not sure if re-applying for the new visa on a later date than the course start date may or may not effects me in any way(s) in issuing the new visa. Will there be any chances of me getting a new visa OR will it be like I may re-apply...but the chances are far below...as I am being denied and not answering the questions truthfully. Bottomline is I wasn't lying and NEVER lied on the application. It's just that I wasn't sure whether to write everything down even if this was way beyond in the years.. In some cases as to my knowledge I thought it would be much better to say NO if unsure. I did have asked my Canadian teacher to see if she can help me in anyway and she told me to try to re-apply assuming that I may get a new one regardless of the past. However, this is to an extent and not on the whole. What shall I do? Shall I re-apply? To re-apply means I have to re-take the medical exam which will costs me a lump sum plus the visa processing fee..meaning I may have to double the payment. My friends are all waiting and they want me to get together with them to study. more

Resolved Question: Help! I'm in the middle a kinda scary Craiglist scam?!?

So the other day was the first time I used Craigslist. I put up a dress for $350 and the next day I got a simple e-mail about it that simply asked "still available???" and so I replied that yes, the dress was still available. I was then replied with this: ------------------------------------------------- Hello... I really appreciate your response to my mail.I want you toconsider it sold, pls do withdraw the advert from craigslist to avoiddisturbance.I want you to know that i will be paying via certifiedcheck .I will need you to provide me the following information tofacilitate the mailing of the check 1.....Full name to write on the check 2.....Full Physical address to post the check 3.....Home & Cell Phone to contact you **I will like you to know that you will not be responsible forshipping i will have my mover come over as soon as you have cashed thecheck****Please kindly keep other buyers off.Regards. --------------------------------------- It seemed normal enough so I replied and gave what was asked. Name, address, my mother's cell # then mine. Told them to call once I had cashed the check to set up the pick up. Then I get this: --------------------------------------------------- Thanks so much for the info,i will like let you know that the deal isstill on and the payment would be sent via UPS or Courier Serviceand the item will be picked up as soon as you receive the payment, andget payment cashed. Then I will instruct my shipper to get in contactwith you for the pick up schedule time and date.I will like to tellyou that i would be sending a payment worth of $2000 to cover theshipment of the items bought, because, i might not be on hand when thepayment arrives,as am going for my honeymoon in the ALABAMA .As soonas you receive the check have it cashed and remove your money for theitem and send the remaining funds to my shipper via Money Gram moneytransfer. My shipper is also picking some of other items at the samecity of yours, that is why you need to transfer the amount to myshipper.you will have to deduct $50 for your running around thatI have caused you during the transaction period. Please let me know ifi can trust you on this so we can move forward from here.Do get back to me asap. Ok Regards ------------------------------------------------- When I saw the $2000 I knew something was off. My mom and I think its a stolen check that they don't want traced back to them. I plan on e-mailing this person back and telling them somehow that the deal is off, then reporting them to Craigslist, but I want to somehow incorporate into the e-mail that the address I gave them isn't my home address. I mean, after the whole Craigslist Killer thing, I don't want someone suspicious with my address getting any ideas. Can someone please help me come up with a way to get them away from my address in an e-mail. Maybe say something, I dunno, that its a business?? Anything is appreciated, thanks.I'm mainly worried about them having my name and address. They could be printing the info on fake checks... more

Resolved Question: Honest feedback from moms on business venture?

I'd like to start a small business and am looking for feedback on my idea. It would predominantly be an errand-running service. We would target three main groups: 1.People who have difficulty with mobility: -senior citizens -recuperating patients -new mothers 2.People who can't find enough time in the day: -busy parents -busy professionals 3.People with pets Our services would include, but not be limited to: -dog walking -pet sitting -grocery shopping and delivery -prescription pick up -courier services (delivery/shipping) -help with event planning (eg- filling out invitations, writing thank you cards, ordering/pick up supplies like baloons etc.) -takeout food delivery -professional personal assistant (making travel arrangements) -personal assistant (personal shopper, travel planning) Honesty, how much do you think people would be into using this service? I'm thinking I should do an hourly rate per service with a minimum of one hour. For example, grocery shopping 20/hr. one hour minimum. Please make your criticisms constructive. Thank you in advance. more

Resolved Question: is this harrassment-what can i do?

HI there, so i work on reception and use courier services all the time. when i got here, courier service No 1 messed me about so much! so courier service No 2, called round and tried to build a relationship with me and proved to me that they could do the job better than anyone else so i use courier service No 2 a lot. anyways, i call courier service No1 up after a long time to give them a job and the controller blasts me! saying for some reason u decide that u dont like us and we lost a lot of business cos of u and we had such a good relationship with the previous relationship so i replied hang on a minute i never sed i didnt like u for a minute as i dont know u! at the end of the day ur couriers messed me about, so i went to courier service no 2 and they proved themselves to me so he sed, wel where are ur precious courier service now then? ey where are ur precious courier service now? ( in an unbelievably aggressive tone!) so he sed at the end of the day, when and if you leave then and only then will we come back and approach u for business so i put the fone down- my reception is in an open plan office so hence anyways, so they barge into my workplace having made an appointment today with me thru someone else (the ex receptionist!) and then try to ''explain why their controller spoke to me the way he did (without an apology!)'' and i sed i do understand why he was angry but at the end of the day if u guys came in like u are now, to pitch to me and resell it to me then i wuda given u guys another go cos i have nothing against u and i was naturally taken off guard and on the defensive) they call the switchboard to ask for the owner of the company! i feel like they will complain about me now (as luckily the owner wasnt in!) and i have no idea if this is harrassment. my manager wants to speak to me about it (a colleague of mine told her what happened) and i feel i shud go to the police as this is intimidating behaviour!! help help help!!!! what can i do!!!!?????this isnt some random guy - it was the owner of the business i dont care what he does-yelling at me i cant let go of and did but now he's tryna call up about complaining about me?? what do ido? more

Resolved Question: Could someone wit experience please look over my business brief and pass honest comment?

OK. I am 23 and living in a city in the south west of England. It is my intention to become self employed with the plan below; I have only been thinking about it for a couple of days, so it is all very basic and vague at present, but I would still appreciate any pointers. I am soon buying a 100cc moped to get me around town. I will attach a large carry-box to the rear (like you see on pizza delivery mopeds, but much more secure) and panniers- or side storage boxes- to each side of the saddle. I am going to set up a motorcycle courier business confined to the city limits. Due to the amount of storage I'll have on the moped, I will concentrate on smaller items; files, documents, items of jewellry, computer components, monies etc. The boxes will have strong locks and be weather-proof. I am thinking that I will charge by the mile; say £2-3 p/m, and that I will work 6am-9pm mon-sat. After 5pm my fee will go up by, say, £1 p/m. Delivery guaranteed within 1 hour (with a moped I can bypass many traffic jams). My main market will be offices, such as smaller accountants or solicitors, IT firms, Jewellers, independant shops and hotels. I will of course also cater for domestic items and will gladly do pick-ups or deliveries to train stations. My aim is to build up a rapport with customers so I can perform tailor-made contracts with them, for instance working out of hours or beyond the city limits once in a while. I already have £3000 saved to buy the moped and clothing, moped tax and insurance and an IT friend is setting up a website for me at a cut price. I'll also put an ad in the phone book. This £3000 should cover any 'start-up' costs (?) What do you think so far? Thanks. PS, 'Cool Hal': I will have mobile connected to a helmet microphone, so I can take calls on the move. My website will specify package sizes, and I beg to differ about congestion in Exeter, Bristol and Plymouth! Also, £3-ish p/m to get a package delivered within the hour at 9pm on a Saturday night was fairly reasonable, I thought!PPS: 'Cool Hal': sorry, I did not mean to sound so abrupt, Thank you for your answer, you raise some good points that I will have to think about. more

Diane Reeves of Lakewood, who planned the protest for Aug. 25 at the town square on Clifton Avenue, pointed to rumors that such gangs as MS 13 and the Latin Kings, as well as some out-of-town militant groups, would disrupt the rally. That, coupled with the conflict that occurred at a similar protest last month in Morristown, convinced Reeves that the handful of officers Police Chief Robert Lawson promised to provide would not be enough protection. "I was nervous that if something happened, what were we supposed to do?" Reeves said. She and other rally supporters voiced resentment that the township had not agreed to assign more members of its 125-strong police force. They pointed to Morristown, which supplied a strong police presence at the protest over the same issue in late July. Five people were ar-rested and two were slightly injured at that event. "I was very upset when I heard," said Carmen Morales, vice chairwoman of the advocacy group You Don't Speak For Me, who was supposed to speak at the rally. "I feel Lakewood is like a sanctuary for illegal immigrants . . . and (the police) seem to protect them." Officials relieved Mayor Raymond Coles stressed that the Morristown rally was municipally sponsored, as opposed to the privately organized one in Lakewood. Lawson said he could not justify taking more officers off patrol duty, and the township could not afford the overtime. Beyond that, Coles and Lawson agreed with Reeves' decision to cancel. "I'm relieved," Lawson said. "Lakewood has a large number of undocumented residents . . . and now you're going to have a group in the center of town speaking out against illegal aliens. So it's possible there'd be friction between the two factions that could lead to confrontation." Coles said, "This is a very emotional, heated issue and bringing two very emotional groups together might cause problems." Estimates of the number of illegal immigrants in Lakewood range from 5,000 to 20,000. A 2006 estimate by the U.S. Census bureau put the township's population at almost 70,000. Lawson added that it was common for organizers to pay for off-duty police officers as protection at rallies. The Lakewood rally was expected to draw up to 500 people and was to have five speakers, including two family members of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Reeves, who has never organized a rally before, now plans to find an indoor venue in another town to hold the protest, saying that since the cancellation she has heard from angry supporters offering contributions toward the cost of a demonstration. "Look at the 100,000 illegals getting protection to march down the street everywhere else," she said. "But me, a citizen, has no right because of safety issues." Resolved Question: Database for courier business - access?

I would like to start a courier business. I am planning on only serving a select business type so I will have limited customers. I need to know if Access would be a good app to use to track courier activity as well as printing out forms based on the info entered in the database. I would need it to be accessible by a telecommuting employee to input data into my database. Any info or informative sites would be greatly appreciated! more
