Daily Business & Success Tips

There are two specific military principles of strategy that your can apply in your personal and corporate life to be far more effective. One key principle that you can use is called the Principle of the Offensive. This principle requires that you accept full responsibility for your situation, whatever it is, and then you take charge and take action. You go on to the attack. You become proactive rather than reactive.

The Key To Breakthroughs
I have consulted and worked with hundreds of corporations. In every case, I have found that all great breakthroughs, and breakouts from problem situations, involve someone making the decision to take aggressive, forward action. The wonderful thing about this attitude of the offensive is that it invariably leads to an outcome that is superior to that of just waiting for things to improve. more

Meat Wagons

Organ bank workers would then assess whether the person was a suitable donor, determine whether they had an organ donor card or were listed on an organ donor registry, and try to locate a family member to give consent.

As you can imagine, the plan is freaking some people out. One bioethicist calls it "disgusting." But let's step back and understand what's going on here: Medicine is becoming ever more efficient and rational. Thanks to improving technology, organs that were previously useful only to their owners are now useful to other people, too. This has created pressure on doctors to think about dying people as resources, not just as patients. This pressure, in turn, has driven a movement to loosen organ-collection rules so that people who aren't yet brain-dead can be prepped for harvesting. more

Open Question: Advice on grants, loans, and start up businesses?

I'm 17 years old and I want to start a fashion business in Manhattan, New York by the time I'm 18 years old. I'll be starting college in May. The tuition would be $7,000 a year. I have spoken to my father about my business plans by the time I'm 18 years old. He has suggested I look for grants. Having sent out countless e-mails, making countless phone calls, and so on so forth - I have yet to come up with anything. He has suggested strongly against me getting a loan. (He has bad credit and doesn't want me having the same at such a young age) I have no clue where to go now. Any advice on what I should do? more

Open Question: What to do about my boyfriends mom...?

Okay so i've been with my boyfriend on and off for about 5 years now. Since i was 13 and we've been through alot together. It seems like now were in a great place and even working on living together. His mom is an alcoholic who honestly rubs me the wrong way daily. This might sound mean but EVERYTHING she says and does is so irritating, shes like a child. Shes in severe debt yet she buys tons of alcohol and cigarettes daily and she complains and cries all the time, shes a nightmare. I could go on lol anyways i never speak up to her because i feel her life isnt my business. i always just keep my mouth shut. the problem is she is also an alcoholic and drinks daily. and when she drinks she gets roudy and mouths off. weve had a few spats but for my boyfriends sake we pretend to like eachother when were in the same house. Now my boyfriend wants to rush the moving in thing and wants me to move in with them instead of waiting until she moves out ( shes moving in with her boyfriend soon hopefully and we can take over the apartment). i just dont know how to tell him the real reason i dont want to move in is because i cant stand his mother and i also dont know how to go on dealing with her crap, i plan on being with him forever so im not sure how to go about this. any advice is welcome. any personal stories as well. thank you :) more

Open Question: Do I have to register a business?

I'm planning on offering some pet care services (dog walking, pet taxi, maintenance grooming) soon, but just until the end of summer. I don't want to start a business, but I would still like to earn money. I would also like to advertise, but I'm not sure whether I would have to register it as a business. What I would like to know is, what is the difference between what babysitters do (offer their services, but without actually having a business), and an actual business. more

Open Question: Opening a daycare center?

I'm 19 and I am looking into opening a daycare center in Washington State. I went to a community college right after HS graduation where I took ECE, but dropped out because work got in the way. I'm planning on majoring in ECE(taking it again) and minor in business management. Are they both necessary though? Or would I be able to just major in Business management and open a daycare when that's complete? Is ECE a requirement? Maybe someone can post a link to a site that will inform me.. I googled it, I couldn't find anything useful. It's a childcare center, not a home daycare btw. more

me and this who lives on my floor have been talking for many nights on chat, we planned a movie night. we snuggled during the movie and kissed for the first time with one another during the credits. we stayed in the dorm lounge for 3 more hrs after that, both hooking up and hanging out. we have hung out every day since. he had gotten out of a 14 month relationship, but he says he wants to be single for a while. he said he really likes me and likes talking and hanging out with me. he doesnt want ppl to know. people have suspected something between us cuz we have hung out a lot at night, and he doesnt want them to know, cuz ppl think that he is a good guy and such but he really isnt, i mean hes still a virgin and im not (by far). he thinks its no one elses business really. he said he doesnt want the whole " up in ur business" type of relationship, and neither do i. after hw is usually done, we hang out for the rest of the night. this week is spring break for us, and he was leaving on fri in the morning and he came to my room at 7 am to spend time with me cuz i wont see him for 10 days. we finally went to 2nd base that morning, and we snuggled in my bed for a while. it has been a while since ive been in a relationship and i dont want to go too fast. is this a good start? Open Question: Not having a fence for your dog is illegal, right?

My neighbors have 2 Rotties that I see taken out once a day to go to the bathroom. They don't have a fence and their dogs are showing aggression. When me and the neighborhood kids go out to play, and they see us, they react (growl and bark). There's always a person watching them when they do their business but I'm scared they might attack us or hurt the dog i'm planning to get. They approach a bit but then the supervisor always outside with them makes a sound and they stop. They've been listening a little less lately though.I've seen them taken on a walk and they are dominant (try to walk ahead and pull) and very strong. There have been many attacks in my area and they're big dogs! They seem well taken care of and they're beautiful Rottweilers. Money doesn't seem to be an issue. You have to have a fence for your dogs in Georgia right? and how do you file a lawsuit? I don't want money I just want our neighborhood to be safe.I live in Georgia and I've already told my parents about it. They agree with me because there are a bunch of kids in our neighborhood. more

Open Question: Can anyone decode this man's behavior?

Someone from my past came back into my life this past January. He looked me up and contacted me. He's 41. I'm 33. He's never been married. He lives with his adopted son (teen) and his ailing mother. He calls me every day-multiple times a day. This is no problem, as I LOVE talking to him. He always has interesting things to say. I guess I've seen him 3 times since January? And it's been running errand types of activities. He has made plans with me 3 times, and 3 times he has canceled on me. The first time he canceled because of a medical emergency with his mother. I understood. The second time, he had talked me into going out of town with him on a business trip. Of course it fell through. He let me know the day before. He went anyway with his son. The 3rd time was an errand. He has made a 4th plan with me. He hasn't canceled yet, but he is definitely starting to lay the groundwork. I asked him flat out if he just wanted to forget about it, and he said no. I told him that if he cancels, this will be the 4th time. He went on to tell me that things with his family are honestly very rough, and he isn't doing it intentionally, He says it will get better. His son isn't feeling well. How does he know his son will still be sick in 3 days? I know what he is trying to pull. The thing is, HE makes these plans. If he doesn't want to hang out with me, why does he keep asking me, then canceling? I never pressure him. I've been nothing but nice. I'm pretty. I'm in shape. I'm younger. He definitely is not married. I know his family. No wife, no girlfriend. He's been single for as long as they can remember, and he's definitely not gay. more

Open Question: what are some good organizations to apply for if I'm looking for a career in international social development?

Open Question: Hesitant to share details about my gown... how do I tell them?

I bought my gown last week and now everyone wants to see pictures and know what it looks like and stuff... but I'm hesitant to show them. I'm not worried about my friends. We have totally different styles, so I'm sure they won't really like it, but they'll be supportive since I already bought it and love it :) What I *am* somewhat worried about is a couple of my cousins. They are both engaged right now and their mom, my aunt, is always bragging about how big and fantastic their weddings are going to be and how much money they make and how much their weddings will cost... even though they haven't even started planning yet. The two cousins are just like that, too, and now that they know I have a dress and have started planning, they are asking me every single question they can think of about my wedding. I don't want to tell them anything because I am worried they'll copy me and then I'll just look like I copied them. I know it sounds very paranoid of me, but this particular cousin torched her own car (a three-month old Toyota Solara convertible) so she could get a brand new BMW so that she'd have a better car than her fiance's ex-gf. How can I tell them politely to mind their business without seeming like a selfish bridezilla?I'm not trying to hide it from everyone, just those two. Please read the entire question! Thx. more

Open Question: Protesting Outside Planned Parenthood?

What are the rules regarding handing out information outside a Planned Parenthood? I use this company for my gynecological needs, as I am not on my parents' insurance anymore. I feel like the people outside pushing anti-abortion are doing more harm preventing someone from getting all information about all options. I also don't appreciate that they assume that I'm there for an abortion--Planned Parenthood is a family planning clinic, not an abortion factory: they help people through their pregnancies, not only terminate them. Is there a distance at which protesters and people handing out pamphlets with pro-life info need to be? Who do I report them to? I really feel this pushy sort of protesting is absurd and needs to be stopped from being directly out front of the clinics, where they are doing nothing but making false assumptions about the women simply seeking gynecological care. I know they have a right to hand out this information, I'd simply like to know at what distance they need to keep from the clinic. I personally feel quite insulted when they give me their "knowing looks" and keep talking at me as I walk to the door, when I'm simply going in to have my yearly exam and obtain a prescription for something that will keep me from having to make the tough decision they simply assume I'm already going in for. My 7 year long monogamous relationship is none of their business, and if we had an accident, their patronizing wouldn't help when I'm trying to make a difficult decision.Didn't mean to end with a statement. But really, looking for the rules of distance that apply to these types of protesters. I'm in California. more

Resolved Question: What motivated Kucinich to flip his vote on health care?

But Mr. Kucinich, who accepted a ride on Air Force One when the President visited his district on Monday, conceded that he might have been "in a position of casting a deciding vote." Voting his conscience was a principle even he couldn't abide by if it meant killing Mr. Obama's initiative, and perhaps irrevocably comprising his presidency. "I still have doubts about the bill. I do not think it is a first step toward anything I have supported in the past," Mr. Kucinich insisted. But, he later added, "we have to very careful that the potential of President Obama's presidency not be destroyed." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/commentary/dennis-no-longer-a-menace-to-obamas-bill/article1504150/ ------------------------------------------ So why the flip ? Threats and or bribery come to mind --- should it or is that out of the question ? Mandating people pay for a service out of pocket within a set market of known suppliers---- isn't that part of the bill or was that removed? The only apparent movement has been to force insurance companies to accept pre existing conditions --- but this says nothing as to making persons with pre existing conditions from being economically excluded by raising premiums --- or does it outline a long term plan to combat such normal and historic moves of unrestrained industry ? Open Question: Why is climate change science chief against marine nature reserve?

From The Times (London): ----------------------------------------- "A company belonging to the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser is opposing plans to create the world’s biggest marine reserve. His company holds a government contract to manage fishing in the area, which would be banned if the reserve were created. The Marine Resources Assessment Group (MRAG) Ltd was established by Professor Beddington, a renowned expert on marine fisheries, in 1986. In 1991 a 200-mile exclusion zone was declared around the Chagos Islands and MRAG won the contract to manage the fishing. The following year Professor Beddington became special adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the fisheries around Chagos. Although the management contract must be put out for tender every five years, MRAG has always won it. Neither MRAG nor the Foreign Office will confirm its value, but MacAlister Elliott, a company that tendered for the work in 2005, put in a bid of £1.4 million for three years. Willie Mackenzie, an ocean campaigner for Greenpeace, said: “Scientists tell us that marine reserves are crucial to protect marine life. Unfortunately it seems that a company owned by the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser didn’t get the memo.” ---------------------------------------- What's really strange is that coral reefs are supposed to be especially at risk from climate change, so why is the UK government's climate science tsar and chief scientific advisor opposing the establishment of the world's largest marine reserve? Is it because he owns a company that does very nicely from government licences to fish there for endangered tuna and other fish? And what does this say about ethical conflicts in those who advise governments on science whilst having business interests in the same area? Open Question: Have we finally found ONE ethical democrat representative?

Stephen Lynch calls health care vote plan ‘disingenuous’ Even one of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s floor whips, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, says a proposed parliamentary move to pass health-care reform would be “disingenuous” and harm the credibility of Congress. In a sign of how tough it’s been for Pelosi to round up votes for the massive bill, Lynch - a South Boston Democrat who supported a House reform package last year - said he’ll probably vote against a key Senate version of the legislation, unless unexpected major changes are made soon. Lynch, who serves as one of Pelosi’s key vote counters, said he also can’t support a proposed “deem and pass” procedure that would allow Democrats to vote to strip out controversial portions of the Senate bill and then “deem” that the entire package has passed without a second, direct vote. http://www.bostonherald.com/business/general/view.bg?articleid=1240545 more

Open Question: Tax Definition of a Business?

I'm trying to decide if my business ventures would be considered a valid business in terms of tax deductions. I design and build web applications, not for other people, but with the hopes that people will use them and they will become popular, hence, bringing in revenue down the road. An example would be if someone was building the next Facebook before it became popular and started making money. Doing this comes at a cost...I have to pay for the computers to do the work, the software to do the work, the online hosting providers that host the applications, fees for domain name registration...not to mention the home office costs. In my mind, this is legitimate business that costs me money, it just isn't profitable yet, and I have no way to predict when it will be profitable. Is this a viable business for tax purposes? I plan to file for LLC and get appropriate local business licenses before I claim any expenses. Thanks in advance! These are not startup costs...these costs are associated with the maintenance of live applications being used by the public. A site might not realize it's potential and gain popularity for several years, but that does not mean the business running the site is in "startup" mode per-say. more

Open Question: What is a PDA and is it better than a HND?

Ok so this may be a bit of a silly question but hey I can be a bit of a silly person lol. Oh & apologies for the length I can't ever seem to ask a short question hee hee. So I am thinking of going to college 1 day a week on a Day Release basis through my work. I already have an Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Administration & Information Technology so I thought the best thing would be go for the next step up which would be the Higher National Diploma (HND) in the same subject. I phoned the number on the South Lanarkshire College, East Kilbride's website to ask what the start & end date of the course would be and the cost because my work needs to know these. After the 1st person couldn't help me she passed me through to someone else who couldn't help who passed me through to someone called Jean Hardie who didn't answer her phone. The girl told me that she's the best and can help me with my query and gave me her e-mail address so I e-mailed her asking those 2 simple questions and got this reply... "Hi Alan Nice to hear from you. Plans for Day Release would be to do the PDA in Office Management and Information Technology as the first part of the award as this will give you the potential to do a level 8 award much quicker than you will get your HND. You need to go from your 12 units to 30 and if you want to get started now there are some options available to you. Tuesday morning is Admin Procedures, there is the possibility of SAGE possibly on a Wednesday afternoon or a Friday afternoon and also in the evening after Easter. On Wednesday morning there is Personal Development Planning. There is also contract law, business law if you're interested in that area. I haven't finalised a timetable yet as the new award isn't released until the middle of April. For most students it would be another 3 years part-time at 6 subjects a year to go from 12 to 30 units. You can do more in a block using nightschool or open learning depending on what's on offer and what workload you are carrying. Jean" I got the HNC the same way I am thinking of doing the HND 1 day a week through my work so would have thought they'd maybe have a file or something on students past and present with what courses they have done and their payment details etc no? Anyway to the main question, what does PDA stand for and what is it? Is it better or the same as a HND? Me confused. Thanks guys :-) more

Resolved Question: How do I start my own small business?

What things do I need to do-ie, ABN? Get an accountant? Register a small Business? How do I do these things, or where can I find out more? I only want a small business-kind of like a party plan-a hands on jewellery class kind of along the same lines as scrapbooking parties or Mary Kay. Not sure it will work, but I want to investigate the possibility anyway. I do not have a degree in business, only a teaching degree. more

Resolved Question: How do I deal with this?

Okay, My mom has always been dependent on other people and her boyfriend is a complete control freak, soon I will be eighteen and able to move out and I think I should. For a whole week she cried to me and asked for my advice in a "friend" way when her boyfriend wanted to kick us out. Then he told her she could stay if she started cracking down on HER kids and possibly made me move in with my 70 something great grandmother. Now she is only flipping out on me and being hard on me for basically no reason. She demeans me and tells me I have no goals in life when this week I'm getting my permit and applying for a job and plan to go to school for business management. I've never rebelled, never partied, I don't do drugs. I think I've been a damn good kid compared to the rest of teens these days. I just don't know what to do. When she wants something she acts real nice to me and talks to me like we are friends and as soon as I tell her I couldn't get what she asked for freaks out and treats me like complete crap. All my life I've watched her kids and gave her money when she needed it and I get nothing but horrible treatment in return. I try talking to her but she just manipulates the situation and somehow twists it to be my fault and freaks out, when it's definately not. Idk if you can help offer some input that'd be great. more

Open Question: Is this tax avoidance or tax evasion? In regards to offshore income...?

I've established that Canada doesn't tax their citizens on income earned from other countries. So I looked up the possibility of starting a corporation (legal entity) in a country with no income/corporate/property tax, and buying a Canadian business with that company. Therefore the income would be earned by my offshore company and not me, and it would be tax-free. Well as it turns out I'm not a genius and that would be tax evasion since the company I start offshore would only be for the purpose of not paying taxes. I'd have to start a company that produces a good or service in the offshore country. SO: If I were to start an offshore company that produces, for example, a very low number of t-shirts or something that never sell and only cost a couple hundred bucks to keep producing and selling really low amounts, could I with that offshore company buy a business in Canada and earn a tax-free income? I have no moral problem with abusing the law; I do not plan on breaking it though. I ask that only people who own/are involved in offshore businesses and property, or those in the tax/accounting profession answer due to the specific nature of the question. Thanks in advance. more

Open Question: Why is the onus on consumers to be environmentally responsible, rather than producers?

The environment and carbon and climate change have been major issues recently. However, when we start to discuss methods in which to reduce our environmental impact and whatnot, the focus keeps coming back to what we as consumers can do, rather than what producers can do, to minimise things like carbon emissions. Why is that? Surely, a consumer can only use what is available to them. They can create demand for a product, but that doesn't always mean the product will become available. If the only food my local shopping centre sells is either genetically modified or imported, then how can I be environmentally and socially conscious and buy the organic sustainably farmed fair-trade stuff? So we can - and should - do things on an individual level in the short term (buy energysaver light bulbs, do our recycling properly, take reusable bags to the shops, recycle and compost) but what happens in a few years time if we've failed to properly plan and implement the major changes to the way we go about our business? Okay, some things are still being developed for commercial use - such as solar cells which don't use silicon - but what about the things we should've always been doing, like using organic permaculture practices (in short, you plant certain things together so the plants work together to provide all the natural pesticides and nutrients they need) rather than slowly degrading the soil with pesticides and fertilisers? In the long run it would be cheaper, wouldn't it? As a child, I never understood how letting the water run down the drain was 'wasting' water. I didn't know we weren't recycling the water. Nature was doing a fairly good job before we butted in; why is it so hard to be sustainable now? more

Open Question: Business degree to run business in Maine?

I am itching to move to Maine and start a nice, quiet, beautiful life. I don't plan on building a family ANY time soon. I want to move to Maine, near the coast. I am a musician and painter, and I figure I want to own my own business selling my art and performing in the communities surrounding where I live, depending on whether or not they have coffee shops I guess. I understand that it will not be a luxurious life, and that I may not ever make ends meet, and that is fine with me. I just want to be able to make and do what I want, and enjoy life. I am getting ready to start college, and I assume that getting a business degree will help me with my endeavour of owning my own business. Correct me if I am wrong, I really am completely lost concerning what to do in college. I was going to go to school for singing, and songwriting/arrangement, but Berklee College of Music is way too damn expensive, so I am only gonna go for this summer. Then I am coming back here to Naples Fl and going to FGCU. Basically I want to know if anyone has followed there dream, particularly one similar to mine (moving to a place, being creative, making enough of a profit to live fairly comfortably, no family), and if it actually worked. If anyone has advice, concerning the college decision or the Maine decision, that'd be great. more
