DATA SNAP: UK 1Q Business Invest -1.4% On Qtr, +3.7% On Yr
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Business investment in the U.K. fell at its fastest rate for nearly four years in the first quarter of 2008, the provisional estimate from the Office for National Statistics, released Thursday, showed. Total business investment was estimated to have fallen 1.4% on the quarter and increased 3.7% on the year, as the U.K. economy continued to slow in the face of the global credit crunch. The data fell short of market expectations of a 0.4% increase on the quarter and a 5.7% gain on the year. The ONS said the quarterly drop was the largest since the fourth quarter of 2004, when investment fell 1.5%. The data showed investment totaled GBP36.2 billion in the first quarter, down from an upwardly revised GBP36.7 billion in the previous three-month period. The ONS also reported that the provisional estimate of business investment in the manufacturing sector fell 4.9% in the first quarter compared with a 3.2% rise in the fourth quarter. more

A revolution in social organization has commenced, and Clay Shirky is its brilliant chronicler.

Business likes lower costs, but budget not bold enough
The budget will reduce compliance costs and make it more efficient to do business, but was also criticised for not going far enough on tax cuts or helping exporters.
Business-focused initiatives in the budget included a new business reporting system, allowing PAYE payment once a month not twice, raising the filing threshold for fringe benefit tax, a higher threshold for GST registration, and cutting compliance costs on operations in Australia.
A lot of the areas had been bugbears for small businesses for years, said Ernst & Young director Alan Judge.
"I think what it will do is allow them to redirect resources into actively managing the business and generating earnings, rather than dealing with compliance costs," Mr Judge said.
A lot of small businesses were in partnerships, not incorporated, and would benefit from the personal income tax cuts. more
