Pittsburgh columnist: Penguins goalie falls flat on his face

Allstate could be back in business

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation on Wednesday said Allstate Corp. has a shot at doing business in the state again.

The office said it expects to receive an affidavit signed by Allstate stating the insurance company has produced all documents requested in a state investigation into the company's business practices. Once that occurs, Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty says he will lift Allstate's suspension, which was upheld Wednesday by the 1st District Court of Appeal.

A condition for lifting the suspension was that Northbrook, Ill.-based Allstate continue to comply with Florida law and cooperate with the office's investigation, according to a news release.

Allstate (NYSE: ALL) was suspended from writing policies in Florida Jan. more

SFA names interim marketing director

Shirley Luna has been named interim executive director of marketing at SFA.

Luna replaces Andy Kesling, who recently resigned from the after two years with the university. The director oversees SFA's Office of Public Affairs, Web Development Office and Printing Services.

"Shirley has more than 20 years of experience in journalism and public relations," Dr. Baker Pattillo, SFA president, said. "Her understanding of the news media and higher education will allow her to ably fill this position, and we appreciate her willingness to serve in this capacity."

A native of Center, Luna holds both a bachelor's degree and master's degree in communication from SFA. A former Daily Sentinel reporter, Luna worked as a freelance writer for 10 years, serving clients including the SFA Alumni Association, the Court Club and an international cattleman's association based in Nacogdoches, the United Braford Breeders. more

Business big shot: Julian Heslop

He was one of a group of business heavyweights who met HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officials in September to discuss the Government's proposed changes to the taxation of British-based companies' foreign profits. Minutes of that meeting reveal that Mr Heslop advised a cautious approach, saying that HMRC needed to work with business at board level to ensure that the outcome was not rushed.

Since then the Government's proposed changes to taxation on foreign profits have prompted Shire, Britain's third-largest drugs company, to announce plans to move its tax domicile to Ireland. United Business Media is following suit and others are considering a similar move. Big business will be reassured, therefore, that the cautious Mr Heslop has been appointed as a member of the Treasury's new multinational forum on tax. more

Hi, I'm a high school student doing a small film project (for fun) and I need to film in a Starbucks. I only have two actors and a very small crew, with only one small camera. I'm not going to cause much distraction or disruption. Anyway, I was wondering how I should go back getting permission to do this. How should I go about it? The question: Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Doing things in ones own way is crucial for accomplishments of the highest level to be reached. Several examples from history clearly demonstrate that more accomplishment is made when one is allowed to elaborate and complete things in a personalized way. As shown by Howard Shultz, a successful business is created by being creative and expanding on that creativity. In Pennsylvania, USA thirty years ago Shultz graduated college and applied for a job as a sales manager at a small cafe, after already having some work experience in the house ware company Ham marplast. The founders of the small cafe, Gordon Bowker and Jerry Baldwin, accepted Shultz and soon the cafe became very successful due to Shultz's tactics. A few years later Shultz went on a vacation to Italy where he discovered Italian- styled cafe's that deeply interested him. After returning to America Shultz revealed this idea to the founders of the small cafe. After they refused to change the style of their cafe. Shultz was compelled to create his own which he called "Il Giornale", which is Italian for daily. After three years Shultz found investors that allowed him to spread his cafe across the world, opening locations in the Far East, Middle East, Europe as we4ll as over 2000 location in North AMerica. By now he had changed the name of the cafe to Starbucks. Thus, because Shultz decided to continue with his original idea he was able to transform a simple idea to a multibillion dollar reality. Through the actions of Jack Welch it is obvious that personal input in a plan is what makes a plan succeed. Jack Welch joined the Company General Electric in 1960. After years of ardous work he was named vice-president of GE in 1972, senior vice-president in 1977, chairman in 1979, the finally was given the Honour of being General Electrics eight and youngest chairman and CEO in 1981. He ran the company the way he knew best, as a "grocery store". He said through this way he was allowed to get to know his eemployeesbetter and this gae him a chance to be involved in all aspects of the company. Hence, Welch's personalize way of management was proved the best way for him to go when the comany's market value increased from $18 billion in 1981 to an astonishing estimate of $80 billion in 2001. As demonstrated by Lee I acocca, using ones own tactics allows one to greatly accomplish. Lee Iacocca started his career in 1964 at the Ford Motor company, where he eventually rose to become president from 1970 until 1978. Iacocca left the company in 1979 after a dispute with Henry Ford and became president, CEO, and chairman of Chrysler Corporation 1979. With his incredulous financial handling tactics, Iacocca saved the company form bankruptcy. He restored the corporation through shrewd financial policies, a 1.2 billion dollar loan guarantee and tax concessions grated by Congress. Many questioned his risk of taking such a large loan to which he replied, "We at Chrysler borrow money the old fashion way. We pay it back." Therefore, Iacocca proved sometime for one to accomplish a goal one must proceed with what one believes in. After careful analysis of Howard Shultz, Jack Welch and Lee Iacocca one can see the doing things ones own way, indeed, leads to more success. more

I have been battling this addiction for over 4 years now. I started out taking a 1/2 of a 500mg vicodin once a week, just when I got a really bad tension headache. I quickly realized I felt "good" when I took them, so gradually started taking more often. That continued for about a year & a 1/2. Then I got pregnant. I was able to stop cold turkey, however I did take a total of about 5 pills throughout my whole pregnancy when aches & pains were really bad. I have always had a high tolerance for pain medications, so otc tylenol DOES NOT help me. So the minute you deliver a baby, guess what, they prescribed me a shiny new rx for darvocet. So since the day my baby was born in Aug. of '07, I have not had 1 clean day. I have extreme depression, & little to no help or support from my husband. The pills make me feel not so sad, & gave me the energy I needed to "handle my business". Over time my habit has increased tremendously..& I'm now taking at least 20 10/325mg Norco daily. I do have my own rx, but that lasts me all of 4 or 5 days, so then I start my "hunt" for a score. I buy 4 different peoples rx's & am spending over $700 monthly on just the pills. Not to mention that while I'm on pills I smoke a pack a day, drink red bull & Starbucks like there's no tomorrow, & have manic shopping habits. I have NO self control. My habit is costing my family everything we have. We can longer pay our bills, & my kids don't have a mommy. The energy the pills used to give me went away a long time ago, now I barely have the motivation to shower. I can't live like this anymore. I have hit my bottom, & I HAVE to quit. We can't afford rehab, & my husband makes to much $$ to qualify for any special "scholarships"...so basically I'm screwed. The other night I decided to talk to my G'pa about helping us to pay for a detox program. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. My G'pa thinks so highly of me, & to tell him that I'm a drug addict was so painful. He has bailed us out sooooo many times financially in the past, he just can't afford to pay for it. I should've asked him for help a long time ago...but...woulda, coulda, shoulda isn't going to help now. So I basically "told on myself" so now I have no other option BUT to quit. Since I can't afford to pay for rehab, I have to do this at home. The plan is, my mom & husband are going to take a week off work & basically nurse me back to health...but I'm SCARED!!! I've heard so many horror stories. I'm writing this in hopes that someone out there has some advice for me. I'm terified of the pain, diahrrea, nausea, bone aches, insomnia...all of it. I've read all these "recipes" that are supposed to help with wd symptoms, but believe it or not, I'm scared of taking drugs...I know funny right. I would like to be able to do this with ibuprofen, tylenol pm, immodium, & hot baths....but is that just ridiculous for me to even think that possible?? I don't want to use suboxyn, or valium or any other substance to wd because my addictive personality will become addicted to them..I just know it. If anyone out there has any advice for me..PLEASE help. I'm planning to do this the week after Thanksgiving, I would like to be back to my normal self by Christmas. more

I am only stating facts and nothing else. Should you need more information feel free to ask. Here's the story... My girlfriend and I live together and are currently sharing a car as she recently sold hers. Technically the car is mine but she uses it for her day to day needs like picking the kids up from school, grocery shopping, etc. I am self employed so my schedule is pretty flexible and on most days she will drop me off at the office and pick me up when I'm ready. I do have an obligation to provide a shipping service for a company I have a contract with and it is important that I start each day at a reasonable hour so that I can perform as promised. On the day in question my girlfriend had a doctors appointment at 11:00am. She had told me about the appointment several times in the week preceding the appointment and on the morning of the appointment's. At around 8:30am I had made plans to have breakfast with a friend/business associate. She reminded me of her appointment and I decided to cancel my breakfast. I sat in the dining room working on my computer from 9:00am on and from time to time got up to either smoke a cigarette or get more coffee. I'm not sure what my girlfriend was doing exactly but she could have been cleaning up around the house or doing laundry, I'm not sure. At around 10:30am she said we have to go I'm going to be late. I got into the car after putting my laptop away and helped her put the dogs in their rooms. I proceeded to my office which is about 5 minutes from our house. It is almost exactly 5 miles and most of it is highway. Almost religiously I stop at Starbucks on the way in. She started getting upset in the car on the way there and I asked why she didn't tell me earlier that we needed to leave. I skipped my Starbucks and went straight in the direction of my office. She then told me that her doctor's appointment was about 15-20 minutes away. After she continually blamed me for her being late and I continued to say it was her fault we ended up in a very big argument. At some point she decided there was no way she was going to make it on time and called to cancel the appointment. I then turned the other way to go to starbucks. Aside from the obvious of me being a little unsympathetic to the fact that she was late. I was extremely pissed off that I was taking the blame for it. She still contends that it was my responsibility to know what time to leave for her doctor's appointment. She never told me the address of the doctor, she assumes that I knew where it was. Regardless of whether I knew where it was, is it my responsibility to watch the clock and make sure she's on time? Am I in the wrong? Shouldn't she have said we need to leave at 10:00am? Do you like your career? I'm currently at a university, and planned to major in Psychology but realize this could be a huge mistake in that any liberal arts degree, and a lot of business degrees are a dime a dozen these days, and I'll most likely be making coffee as a barista at Starbucks. So...I'm thinking about changing my major to nursing, because of the job growth and the entry salary and bonuses that can be made. Hi! I have a relatively general question that maybe someone with a little more time on me could help me with. I'm a 23 year old male, living in the south suburbs of the twin cities in a small one-bedroom apartment. I did well in high school, got to college, tried, but discovered that my focus was more on self-discovery, and not on school. Needless to say, I probably have about two years of school completed. At this point in time, I don't really plan on going back, as I don't see the immediate need. My first job (I guess I would call it a college job), while I was going to school, was working at starbucks, for three years. Throughout my time there, I did get promoted to a supervisor. After a while, I got tired of the hours, and started working for U.S. Bank as a Teller. After less than a year, I was promoted to my current position, a Personal Banker. My question is this: Is what I'm doing (or rather, my position in life) below average, average, or above average from most people my age? My apartment is nice, with nice furnishings, in a good neighborhood. I have nice clothes, and pay for all of my own bills- medical, auto insurance, rent, renters insurance, the whole nine yards. And I manage to have a little bit left to have some fun with. Still, I wonder if I'm behind my other fellow twenty-somethings, and wonder if I should be in a better position in my life, rather than working in a relatively entry level position at major financial institution. Do most 23 year olds have offices and desks and their own business cards? Just curious. I need a little insight. Thanks :)I guess thats just it - I don't want to be seen as unsucessful, and I just honestly want to know if where I'm at in life right now is on-par with what other people my age are doing. Where are the sexy guy themed espresso stands??? We are thinking about opening a male-run espresso stand and calling it "Muscles & Mocha." The idea is to have hot muscly men (male stripper types) serving you coffee and dressing in themed outfits like military, fireman, each day of the week ect. So my question for you is, what do you think? Would you ever consider passing on Starbucks to visit our coffee shop to sneak a peak out our guys and get a great cup-o-jo??? About a day ago (Monday) , I went in and submitted an application at Starbucks, but their manager wasn't in for the day, and the cashier told me that she would hand my application to her and she would call me. I know from experience (even though this is my first time trying to find a job) that even though they say the manager will contact you, that's not always entirely true. Do you think I would have a good chance of getting hired if I called the shop around Saturday to speak to the manager about her review of my application? An advantage that this business has over Starbucks and Coffee Bean is that they offer larger cups (24 oz for both hot and cold drinks) at much cheaper prices. I'm planning on creating a small flyer for the business. I want it to be edgy to grab people's attention. On the front, I want to place a picture of Pamela Anderson's face (which I'll purchase from corbis.com for $500) with the words "Bigger cups?" written next to her face, and on the back "How about bigger cups at cheaper prices?", with a comparison of our cup sizes/prices and a small menu on the side. So my two close friends are dating each other. In the beginning (back in July 2008) they met at my fiance's birthday party and there was very good chemistry between them. They hooked up at a party I was throwing in August and soon enough they were a happy couple. A month and a half later, the girl confessed to me that she doesn't want to be his "girlfriend" and would rather just be his "best friend". The guy was head over heals for her and when he found out that she didn't feel as strongly toward him as he did toward her, he was devastated and ran to me for help in fear of losing her. I tried my best to secretly help him out with advice even though at the same time she was telling me how she just does not want to be in a relationship...even with a good guy like him. They were broken up for about a month. In the beginning of December 2008 they somehow reunited and seemed very satisfied with the relationship. Now this is the part I need help with: A few days ago the guy came running to me again with something about him feeling suffocated and wanting to take a long break. He suddenly started to tell me how he doesn't even believe in love and thinks relationships suck and aren't for him. I also noticed how he was saying the same things the girl was telling me when she was the one who wanted "out" of the relationship. The thing is, now the girl is very, very attached to him and when she talks about him to me, I can tell that she truly loves him and he has even become her best friend. (I know exactly how that feels because that is how I feel toward my fiance...I love him very much and he is my best friend). I told the guy that he shouldn't take such extreme measures as officially taking a break because if he tells her that directly, she will be more than devastated. (I'm even afraid she might become suicidal because she recently lost another close friend who just for no reason decided to screw her off and doesn't want anything to do with her anymore). Okay i live in Washington State, i don't know how bad it is in your state but people are being layed off left and right. My boyfriend and i live with my mom and step dad in a large house, we are expecting our first baby this april. Within the past MONTH my step dad got laid off, my mom can not work because she is working due to schooling, and my boyfriend just found out he may be getting laid off within this next month. No one is hiring and no one can find a job. My step dad used to own a construction company and was a private contractor, but he couldn't afford to keep pay for his contractors license and insurance. I am almost 8 months pregnant and i work part time as a nanny, i only make 300$ a month and that barely pays for gas. no one will hire me because i am pregnant. Starbucks layed off 6,000 people and closed 300 stores. Boeing also layed off over 1000 people. those are two HUGE businesses in Washington. I found out on Monday I am pregnant. I have a cafeine and nicotine addiction. Smoke a pack a day and drink about 8 cups (literally cups, not large size cups from Starbucks) of coffee a day. So since Monday, I have cut down to 2 cups of coffee a day and 8 cigarettes a day. I plan to slowly cut back and be off everything by week 3. I know it is bad to smoke and drink coffee while pregnant - fully and completely aware. I am addicted, I cut by 50% right away and I have a plan in place. But everyone is still being so mean to me. I am trying my best but everyone tells me there is just no excuse, I should just be able to quit everything immediately and there should be no 'weaning' and addiction is not an excuse to not immediately stop.
