Hamas's Mish'Al, Iranian Foreign Minister Back Syria Over Golan

The Palestinian people, and I say it here and in everywhere, the Palestinian people will not accept any deal or settlement that forfeits land, or Jerusalem or the right of return, or forfeits the complete sovereignty of our Palestinian people on their land.

These are principles. Therefore, the Americans and Israelis are trying to go against the current. They will discover that they will go from one failure to the other. This is what we are witnessing; they are failing in many places, they are failing in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan and with Iran and Syria and Sudan and with any force that says no to American hegemony and Israeli threats.

We say, in the Hamas Movement, and with all the Palestinian resistance forces, and the majority of the forces and the Palestinian public opinion, we are insisting on breaking the Gaza siege. more

Tories still second best in Haringey

The Liberal Democrats had a bad day in Tottenham, coming third in the voting breakdowns and dropping to fourth in the London List, where they finished behind the Green Party with less than 10 per cent of the votes. But in the west of the borough, the situation was markedly different. The Liberal Democrats' Monica Whyte took the top spot for the Enfield and Haringey seat on the GLA with 32 per cent of votes in Hornsey and Wood Green, just ahead of the 30 per cent taken by Labour's Joanne McCartney. Ms Whyte said she was "delighted and grateful for the confidence the people of Hornsey and Wood Green showed in me".But it was not enough to place her any better than third overall in the race for the GLA seat. The Liberal Democrats also came third in all the borough-wide postal votes.Justin Hinchcliffe, chairman of Tottenham Conservatives, seized on the results, claiming his party was racing ahead while the Liberal Democrats' share of the votes headed for the doldrums. He said the results reflected a comeback for the Conservatives, overtaking the Liberal Democrats in the east of the borough for the first time in seven years. He added: "These results are very good for Labour, extremely encouraging for us Conservatives and appallingly bad for the Lib-Dems."Haringey is slowing returning to two-party politics. more

Resolved Question: what do you think about blacks voting rights running out?

Citation: An act to enforce the constitutional right to vote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States, to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes, July 2, 1964; Enrolled Acts and Resolutions of Congress, 1789-; General Records of the United States Government; Record Group 11; National Archives. Johnson, 12/07/1963; White House Photo Office Collection; 11/22/1963-01/20/1969; ARC 192493; NLJ-WHPO-A-VN013; Lyndon Baines Johnson Library; National Archives and Records Administration. How to use citation info. (on Archives.gov) This act, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964, prohibited discrimination in public places, provided for the integration of schools and other public facilities, and made employment discrimination illegal. This document was the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction. In a nationally televised address on June 6, 1963, President John F. Kennedy urged the nation to take action toward guaranteeing equal treatment of every American regardless of race. Soon after, Kennedy proposed that Congress consider civil rights legislation that would address voting rights, public accommodations, school desegregation, nondiscrimination in federally assisted programs, and more. Despite Kennedy’s assassination in November of 1963, his proposal culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson just a few hours after House approval on July 2, 1964. The act outlawed segregation in businesses such as theaters, restaurants, and hotels. It banned discriminatory practices in employment and ended segregation in public places such as swimming pools, libraries, and public schools. Passage of the act was not easy. House opposition bottled up the bill in the House Rules Committee. In the Senate, opponents attempted to talk the bill to death in a filibuster. In early 1964, House supporters overcame the Rules Committee obstacle by threatening to send the bill to the floor without committee approval. The Senate filibuster was overcome through the floor leadership of Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, the considerable support of President Lyndon Johnson, and the efforts of Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen of Illinois, who convinced Republicans to support the bill. A transcript and recording of President Kennedy's speech is available online from the John F. Kennedy Library.
