Australia business conditions tough, confidence off

SYDNEY: Australian business conditions stayed tough in April as sales and profits weakened, while confidence among firms fell to its lowest level since September 2001, a private survey showed on Monday.

The National Australia Bank's (NAB) monthly survey's measure of overall business conditions held at 7 points in April, equalling the lowest reading since December 2002 and a long way from last October's peak of 20.

NAB's measure of business confidence dropped a further 4 points to -8 index points in April. There were steep falls in retail, transportation and personal & recreational services, which swamped a still strong mining sector.

Measures of sales, profit growth and forward orders dropped sharply, though the sub-index of employment jumped amid a still-tight labour market, which was also pushing wages higher. more

You could therefore buy a car but you would have to compete to "win" a licence for that car, since the number of licenses was capped.

Needless to say, the penalties for driving without a licence are harsh and the auction process made car ownership a luxury that only the more privileged could consider. The authorities argued that their traffic problems were entirely abnormal. In the short term, Beijing proposes to alternate "odd" and "even" licence plates to ensure that traffic congestion during the Olympics is kept to a minimum.

Generally, the provinces were also pursuing alternative solutions such as an expansion of the underground and public bus networks, which all appeared to be quite efficient. We also experienced the high-speed experimental rail link that shuttles passengers from Shanghai airport to the City Centre in minutes. more

Business hub proposed

Goff sees a 66-city block land mass called Energy Park One that would serve as a hub for a national network of professionals and businesses.

That hub also would be a marketplace for renewable energy as well as research and development commerce.

Big ideas can sometimes take bigger funding solutions and Goff has asked the City Council to use a "metro district" taxation plan to help pay for some of the development.

Council gave an initial thumbs-up to the proposal last week at a study session to allow for special taxation districts, on a case-by-case basis, for commercial and some mixed-use developments within city limits. That was welcome news for Goff.

"It's the developer's tool of choice because he can get municipal bonding instead of paying for it out of his pocket," Goff said. more

More cautions on Cablevision's purchase of Newsday

Once again, there are some strong voices of concern in Long Island Business News about the purchase of Newsday for $650 million by Cablevision.

In an unsigned editorial on "Cablevision's growing empire," the Business News' policymakers say the "acquisition of Newsday means that the cable operator so many Islanders love to hate now holds more power over us than ever before." The editorial says "Cablevision is now the chief gatherer and disseminator of general interest news on Long Island. That is a huge responsibility and it's landing in the lap of arguably the most clandestine company in our region." It goes on to criticize Cablevision for not making its executives available for interviews after the deal was announced (Newsday didn't get any access either).

The Business News editorial ends by saying: "Newsday belongs to Long Island. more

"Crew Pass" developed to help boost local business in PA.

This pass was designed for the purpose of giving members of the cast and crew a discount for local shops and businesses in the greater Philadelphia area during the filming of the movie. The pass is to be good during pre-production all the way until final wrap is called. This is great news for local businesses who will have more success in boosting revenue with the introduction of the "Crew Pass'. To learn more about this offer, click here.

Resolved Question: Will my arcade business succeed?

I'm planning on renting some open space at the 40 lane bowling alley i work at to put in my own arcade games. Rent would be somewhere in the area of 800-900/month. We currently have games through a distributor but they all stink, because they're obscure games that are second rate at best. Also, there's little variety as three of them are shooters. I would be buying and assuming full ownership of about 8 games, one of which will hopefully be a pinball machine. The bowling alley has been doing good business, so traffic shouldn't be a problem, especially with kid's leagues, birthday parties, etc. I'm estimating the start up cost to be right around 10k and 800-900/month rent. The following is a list of games i think would be good, it includes prices after shipping ms. pac man - 900 crystal castles - 800 space invaders - 800 zombie revenge - 800 house of the dead 2 - 900 pinball machine - 2300 crazy taxi - 1200 (2) star wars racer (pod racing) - 3000 change machine - 600 Do you think in a busy bowling alley these games could make enough to cover the 800-900 rent and any repair costs that may arise? The location is perfect and my boss said i could do it if i can produce the games and pay for licensing. more

Resolved Question: Is that it finished ,all our hard work gone ? :(?

For the last year and a half my business partner and I have been working on our business idea, Bowling alley, we are both 22 and we live in sligo ireland, where we lived we noticed we had pretty much everything from cafes to shopping centres to clothes shops, bars and restuarants etc, but no real leisure facility's so we thought a bowling alley would be great, not long ago our local paper printed an article on how our town needs a bowling alley so this got us excited as we knew we have a market and it would be a success, we have done courses, completed a very good business plan with projections and all market research added, only thing is we are both 22 and have little money,we have been saving but we only have €10,000 to date so we needed help regarding investment to get this thing moving,we set up meetings with our local enterprise board and although they think its a great idea, they cant give grants to our kind of business, its got to be manufacturing for them to give any kind of grant aid, so this leaves us with the banks, I spoke to a good friend who works in a local bank and told him how we need €120,000 to get this open and he said there is no way any bank would give us that amount, not in todays climate,no chance,so we thought last chance saloon is a private investor,we have put our idea on a investment site, based for ireland and the uk but after 5 people being interested we have heard nothing back from these, its been very frustrating for us as we know we have a business that could be very successful, yet we cant seem to get the help, we have had every door shut in our face, to make things worse there is rumour going around that some fat cat business man with big pockets is thinking of opening one and has applied for planning, so after all our hard work and dedication, thats it gone as we cant think of what else to do ... i feel so deflated and down to be honest, life eh! more

Resolved Question: Need Advice for opening Party Business?

would love to have my own small dress up rental business for children to experience an extra special birthday. I imagine I would target more girls then boys with this idea but will also include boys items. What I would like to do is have the business from my home as in I would store the costumes, accessories and party supplies in my extra room. Then when people would like to rent a package I would either have them pick it up at my home or deliver it to them. For an extra fee I would deliver everything set it up and then after the party take everything down and back home. In this package I would include -Costumes (In the theme they choose) -Accessories (Feather Boas, Fairy Wings, Necklaces, Crowns...) -Invitations (Optional add on) -Games to Play -Craft Activity -Party Guide -Favors (Optional add on) -Table Wear (Tea Cups or Paper Goods, Table Cloth, Napkins....) -Decorations This would be a complete package but I would also set up individual packages if they only choose to have the costumes and tea cups for example. So the parents would be the ones to host this party but it would be easy as I would include lots to do and a guide. So this is my idea and I would love to start it out with just a few themes. But there are a few things I am still not sure about. I live in a small town in PA the population is 5,960 I would be willing to travel to houses out of my town but I would love to get business locally. I plan on moving down the road but this is where I will be living for several years. In this area there are no party things to do the only thing we have is a bowling alley. We do have a community center and places to hold parties at if parents didn't want to have the party in their home. I also don't plan to get rich off of this business either just want to do it part time and make some money doing something I love! I also know that I would need to get a business license but what else would I need to rent out these packages? I don't really know the nuts and bolts of what to do or how to find out more information about this. I am also going to be attending Penn State in Fall to get my education for a real career so not sure if I will be able to open my business until after I graduate which will be two years after this fall. But if I some how was able to open up while attending school the extra money would help out. Here is a link to basically exactly what I want to do only in a smaller scale http://www.simplypretend.com/ more

Resolved Question: I vented on my co-worker today should I feel as bad as I do?

recently my coworker expressed her unwelcomed opinion about me wanting to bring my 12 yr old daughter to the employee Xmas party. This event was held at a bowling alley which I feel is a appropriate place to bring my kid. I know that other people were thinking about bringing their children. As I was at work on Sat. this one girl takes it upon herself to ask if I was bringing my kid, not that it was really any of her concern, then she proceeds to tell me that it was not an appropriate atmosphere and that I should not be drinking around my daughter. I don't feel that I really needed to answer to her about anything that she was saying and she did also say alot more. I know that she was just being ignorant and I should of just shrugged it off. It was not just her concern ,but also a few others she was the only one who said anything directly to me. I ended up not going at all and there were some people at work asking me why today especially since it was my idea to have this at a bowling alley. I was so mad because the girl who started all of this was standing there saying nothing and she knew that her comment was the reason I didn't go I was just too upset and I wouldn't have enjoyed myself. One of the managers asked what happened as I was explaining the situation she walks in the room and she started up again with her opinion. I was so mad who is she to concern herself with my family especially when she has a drug problem. So we went into another room and I just vented on her I told her it was none of her business that she was to never talk about my kid with me and that she had no right to judge me and make accusations about me getting drunk around my daughter, which I was never planning on doing in the first place. I was so mad and the members at the country club over heard. Now I feel like an idiot for getting so mad that I totally lost my temper. Not to mention when this gets back to the GM I'm going to have to answer to him. Did I go too far or as a parent not to say that my behavior was exceptable was it in your opinion relatively understandable. I just feel awful now I haven't been that angry with someone I don't care about in years. more

Resolved Question: Will people invest in a new business if.....?

2 people need 2 to 3 million dollars to start up a new businesss. One is a graduate of college with a bachelors degree in business and marketing with out of this world credit and is 24 years old. The other is a 24 year old that didnt graduate college, but worked for a small corporation and worked his way up to a manager and opened a new store and made sales go through the roof for the company. The catch is that he has bad credit (not sure how bad), but with credit card chargeoffs and a car repo that are from about 4 years ago with everything currently current. Like I said I am not sure how bad his credit is but do investors look at personal credit or do they go by the business plan they have and go from there. Do they have a shot?? By the way it is a bowling alley in a very good area that should make good money.Neither person is me more

Resolved Question: I need homework help can anyone out there help me?!!!!!!!? This is the question?

Imagine that you have just bought a house in a new neighborhood. You do not know any of your neighbors well, but you do greet them on the street . You learn that the owner of a vacant lot on your block plans to erect a bowling alley and cocktail bar there. Although your neighborhood is a resiential district, there is no zooming ordinance which wopuld forbid businesses opening up there. You worry that such a bussiness will lower property values abd cause problems for the young children who play on the street. You learn that by getting enough signatures on a petition you can prevent the business from being built . You get the necessary forms and start down the street to get signatures. How would you go about persuading your neighbors? In the space below write the opening remarks during the FIRST MINUTE of your talk. Pay special attention to GETTING A "YES RESPONSE". THANK YOU more
