Resolved Question: Why do the rich complain about higher taxes?

The rich should be paying higher taxes. If you’re a big corporation, states will actually give you incentives to set up shop in their states for job creation and economic growth. States even build special roads (some named after the company), specialized telecommunications systems catered to your business, increase your hazardous waste quotas, and countless other projects to satisfy the company’s needs. So, why shouldn’t the rich pay for that? Also, the rich have the loudest voices in Congress and can afford the expensive lobbyists so that laws get passed in their favor. Sure, corporations create jobs but that just means they’re profitable and can expand. Ultimately, the rich consume a lot more than the other two classes both environmentally and financially so they should absolutely pay most of the taxes…….. Rachel E - your statement is not true. Most wealthy people inherit their wealth. That's a known fact..... I should also mention that the rich have at least 8 times as many write offs as any other individual so in the end, they don't end up paying their fair share of taxes. On paper, it seems that way but in reality, it isn't......  more

Resolved Question: catering Job discrimination by travel distance?

One of my friends joined the hmgny catering company trough online registration filling out a form with name and address to get a job as a server. She has gotten a link to schedule an info session that did not work. Apparently you have to call to schedule the interview and she did but he tells her "You live in xxxx town it is not going to work, we offer gigs in manhattan and new jersey only", he asks her if she drives and she tells him used to work in Manhattan , no problems with that. But again he blows her off saying "we are distant, I don't feel like is a good idea, let's not do that". She didn't even get to talk about her experiences in this business or show him her resume, I think she got discriminated on the fly by where she lives even so she reassured him to be fine with travelling to Manhattan. It takes her bet 30 and 45 min by train to reach Manhattan. Bottom line she did not get an interview neither the job obviously. What do you think about this? Is it discrimination?  more

Resolved Question: When is McCain going to be honest on what caused this mess? Is he going to start naming names?

The Real Culprits In This Meltdown By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Monday, September 15, 2008 Big Government: Barack Obama and Democrats blame the historic financial turmoil on the market. But if it's dysfunctional, Democrats during the Clinton years are a prime reason for it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read More: Business & Regulation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obama in a statement yesterday blamed the shocking new round of subprime-related bankruptcies on the free-market system, and specifically the "trickle-down" economics of the Bush administration, which he tried to gig opponent John McCain for wanting to extend. But it was the Clinton administration, obsessed with multiculturalism, that dictated where mortgage lenders could lend, and originally helped create the market for the high-risk subprime loans now infecting like a retrovirus the balance sheets of many of Wall Street's most revered institutions. Tough new regulations forced lenders into high-risk areas where they had no choice but to lower lending standards to make the loans that sound business practices had previously guarded against making. It was either that or face stiff government penalties. The untold story in this whole national crisis is that President Clinton put on steroids the Community Reinvestment Act*, a well-intended Carter-era law designed to encourage minority homeownership. And in so doing, he helped create the market for the risky subprime loans that he and Democrats now decry as not only greedy but "predatory." Yes, the market was fueled by greed and overleveraging in the secondary market for subprimes, vis-a-vis mortgaged-backed securities traded on Wall Street. But the seed was planted in the '90s by Clinton and his social engineers. They were the political catalyst behind this slow-motion financial train wreck. And it was the Clinton administration that mismanaged the quasi-governmental agencies that over the decades have come to manage the real estate market in America. As soon as Clinton crony Franklin Delano Raines took the helm in 1999 at Fannie Mae, for example, he used it as his personal piggy bank, looting it for a total of almost $100 million in compensation by the time he left in early 2005 under an ethical cloud. Other Clinton cronies, including Janet Reno aide Jamie Gorelick, padded their pockets to the tune of another $75 million. Raines was accused of overstating earnings and shifting losses so he and other senior executives could earn big bonuses. In the end, Fannie had to pay a record $400 million civil fine for SEC and other violations, while also agreeing as part of a settlement to make changes in its accounting procedures and ways of managing risk. But it was too little, too late. Raines had reportedly steered Fannie Mae business to subprime giant Countrywide Financial, which was saved from bankruptcy by Bank of America. At the same time, the Clinton administration was pushing Fannie and her brother Freddie Mac to buy more mortgages from low-income households. The Clinton-era corruption, combined with unprecedented catering to affordable-housing lobbyists, resulted in today's nationalization of both Fannie and Freddie, a move that is expected to cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. And the worst is far from over. By the time it is, we'll all be paying for Clinton's social experiment, one that Obama hopes to trump with a whole new round of meddling in the housing and jobs markets. In fact, the social experiment Obama has planned could dwarf both the Great Society and New Deal in size and scope. There's a political root cause to this mess that we ignore at our peril. If we blame the wrong culprits, we'll learn the wrong lessons. And taxpayers will be on the hook for even larger bailouts down the road. But the government-can-do-no-wrong crowd just doesn't get it. They won't acknowledge the law of unintended consequences from well-meaning, if misguided, acts. Obama and Democrats on the Hill think even more regulation and more interference in the market will solve the problem their policies helped cause. For now, unarmed by the historic record, conventional wisdom is buying into their blame-business-first rhetoric and bigger-government solutions. While government arguably has a role in helping low-income folks buy a home, Clinton went overboard by strong-arming lenders with tougher and tougher regulations, which only led to lenders taking on hundreds of billions in subprime bilge. Market failure? Hardly. Once again, this crisis has government's fingerprints all over it. *In the original version of this editorial, the Community Reinvestment Act was mistakenly listed as the "Community Redevelopment Act". http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=306370789279709  more

Resolved Question: Do I have to change my blog name due to copyright/trademark?

I created a new food related blog last month relating to food. Basically showing neat pictures of food and recipes found throughout the web and then giving credit to the sites/owners I found them. I was contacted this week, being asked to stop using the blog name I chose, as they started a business a year ago using the same word I chose for my blog title. They say they are already in the process of copyrighting the name and it is theirs. (I'm going to leave the actual name out of it for privacy reasons!) With a little research I've learned their claim of copyright is completely unjustified as names cannot be copyrighted. They can however be trademarked. I did learn with trademark though that it seems to only apply if we are offering the same services. His/her business is a catering company..mine is a blog talking about food finds. I spent a lot of time this past month building and writing for this blog, that if her claim is unjustified, I'd like to keep working on my blog and let us each have our own use for the name/slang. Any advice?  more

Voting Question: tbs - movie & a makeover question about one of the featured businesses?

A month ago or so (it may have been longer) I was watching a dinner & a makeover (on tbs)... Anyway, in the makeover part they featured a restaurant that had prepared meals that you can buy (I am sure a program) - but the most delicious vegetarian dishes... Very healthy too... Sounded like the catered to regular people and celebrities... Anyway, I thought I had written down the name of the company, but today when I went to look it up - I couldn't find it... Does anyone have a clue what I am talking about - what the company is? I tried to find it on the tbs site but had no luck... Any help would be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks  more

Resolved Question: Is this going out side his Contract?

I have a question, although i am in canada? maybe you can answer this questions. I have a bakery business (i am the sole propritor) my partner works for a contract catering company. we want to take over one of the contracts, but.... he's contract states "In consideration thereof, during the term of this contract and in the event of termination of this contract for any reason whatsoever, the Employee shall not (without prior written consent of the employer) at any time during the term of this contrat and for the period of 2 years from the date of such termination either individually or in partnership or jointly or in conjunction with any other person or persons, firm, or company, whether as principals, agents shareholders, or in any other manner whatso ever, directly solicit employment or accept employment from any camp or from any person associated with our contracted camps or sports locations or directly induce other employees to leave or accept employment with aforesaid" i worked for the same company as my partner in 2006, and signed the same contract, buts its been 2 years now. my question is this. if i went in with my business name and put a bid on this contract... and then had my partner in the kitchen "working" but not getting paid, but pay myself double to compensate for his wages, would he be considered going out of his contact terms??? does that make sense?  more

Resolved Question: Why can't people understand that Rep politician or Dem politician they're the same people?

You get all this mud slinging and propaganda from both sides calling each other names and what not but in reality it doesn't matter who gets voted in the office Rep or Dem, chances are it will be business as usual. It's not a question of who is more conservative or who is more liberal. The bigger picture is really the same one that we've been dealing with all these years. The HAVES and HAVE NOTS. And the ears of ALL Rep or Dem politicians are always open to the HAVES and not so much to the HAVE NOTS. You honestly think that neither candidates cater to lobbyists? I don't think so. Naivete.. hmmm You think I care more that Alito is in the office or that our economy is in the crap and that people are starving and losing homes? You think that being able to shoot or possess a gun is more important than soldiers dying in Iraq or that my parents can't get health care coverage? You need to get your priorities straight. I'm talking of matters of life and death and you're talking about issues of preference.  more

Resolved Question: What did he have to gain by lying to me?

I had been with my ex for 3 years. When we started in the infactuation stage things were great. We laughed all of the time and had fun. He and my 17 year old son did not get along. I tried to play peace maker but evventually my son moved out with his fatther so I missed my son's senior year. I chalked that up to he needed to go over there and it was not very far from our home. My ex choked him on 3 separaqte occassions and I was going to lose custody of him and my daughter so I let him go. I found a home and my ex purchased it in his name. Since we were planning marriage I felt like we bought it together. He is a chef (my ex) so I spent 2.5 years working on a business plan for a small event catering business. He started fights with my daughter. He choked me because I wouldn't let him take my daughteer's car. I left. He went to jail for a night. He keeps coming over here to my daughters house who has a week old baby. Why? He said he wanted me back. I was thinking about it and its a lie He lied to me by saying that he wanted to reconcile but he really just was watching my moves. He is divorced cuz he choked his first wife. He choked his pregnant girl friend and was going to court for that right beffore I met him and I didn't know it.  more

Resolved Question: Can a Boil on your butt get you sent home from boot camp ???

My son arrived at RTC 29 May 2008 in the PM. He phoned announcing his safe arrival later that evening. He phoned again Tue. 3 June 2008 and informed me that he was being sent home. I asked why and he briefly stated that there was a boil on his rear end that needed to be surgically removed. He then asked for the family doctor's name and number. I gave him the information he asked for, with exception to the phone number ( I did not have with me ). I then asked him when would he be sent home. He responded in a month or so, due to paper work that needed to be done. So; I asked him for the name and / or number of someone at RTC that I might contact to provide the remaining information. At that point he was hurried off the phone. The total time on the phone was less than two minutes. I am aware that the RTC has a system in place by which family contacts recruits via US Mail only. However I don't have an address, as he hasn't been assigned to a division yet. I also fully understand that the RTC has a rigid agenda and cannot cater to every whimpering need. However I am both confused and concerned in that; If a medical condition exist that warrants a recruit being sent home that there would be no information available, other than that given in such a brief phone conversation. At this point I have a host of questions: He's been at RTC for 5 days now. Didn't he get a physical prior to his departure ? Is my son simply confused and he will be treated for the boil. Then, if it doesn't heal he will be sent home ? Will he be allowed to continue training with his class until a decision has been made ? If not, what will he be doing for the month or so, while paperwork is being processed. Does it really take a month to process the paperwork ? If he is sent home; Will his contract with the Navy still be valid. i.e. A-school, signing bonus, etc. or will he have to start over again ? If he has the boil removed and has to start over; How long after the boil is removed would it take to get back into the RTC ? It's took six months since he was first recruited. Will it take that long again ? Is there a standard procedure regarding matters such as this ? If so, where can I find it ? Note: I contacted his recruiter and he informed me that once the recruit is in the RTC the recruiter has no jurisdiction over him. He also told me that he didn't have any contact with the RTC and even if he did they probably wouldn't tell him anything. The following is cut and paste from the Recruit Training Command FAQ section: What information will not be released if I call the Public Affairs Office? HIPAA STATUTE (Medical Records) Protected Health Information – The Health Information Privacy and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protects all “individually identifiable health information” held or transmitted by a covered entity or its business associates, in any form or media, whether electronic, paper or oral. Accordingly, Recruit Training Command (RTC) is unable to disclose any medical information about a recruit to an outside party without the recruit's written permission. PRIVACY ACT The RTC Public Affairs office is not permitted to release information on individual recruits which is protected under the Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C. section 552a. This includes all personal information related to a recruit's training record, medical treatment, official service record, or administrative separation processing. Family members and other interested parties may have access to such information only if a recruit has signed a written waiver of his or her rights under the Privacy Act. The waiver must list the specific individuals to whom release of personal information is authorized. Any recruit may request permission from a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) to visit the Legal Department and complete a Privacy Act waiver form. I'm not sure if he's given written permission to discuss medical issues with his mother or myself ( probably not ) And I'm sure he doesn't know anything about HIPPA or the Privacy Act Waiver. Fire razes two businesses in Brisbane's south

Queensland Fire and Rescue says it took three hours to control a blaze that gutted two businesses, and badly damaged another, in Brisbane's south.

Senior operations coordinator Kevin Devitt says crews were called to two fires - one at a dry cleaning business and one in an adjoining antique shop, at about 2:00am AEST.

He says the blaze quickly spread to a tile warehouse nearby.

Mr Devitt says 42 fire officers have been fighting to control the fire, which proved difficult in the early stages. "Being a dry cleaners that gives us a concern that the building had chemicals on board but we were able to ascertain early that they weren't involved in this part of the building," he said.

"The hard part for firefighters was that it was on two different streets and two different businesses."

Police closed Old Cleveland Road between St Leonards and Wellington Street. more

MCOT English News : Thai advertising business to grow 7-8% in 2008

BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) - Thailand's advertising business, languishing during the past two years due to the country's ongoing political uncertainty, is expected to enjoy growth of around 7-8 per cent in 2008, a senior official in the industry said.

Witawat Jayapani, president of the Advertising Association of Thailand, said that the confidence of manufacturers had improved since the country now has an elected government.

Goods producers are now able to lay out business plans several months in advance while they could only map out short-term plans when the country encountered political problems, Mr. Witawat said.

Advertising business growth during the first quarter this year retreated some 7 per cent as the new government was being formed but it is hoped that the business would rebound during the current summer and during the Songkran festival, Thailand's traditional New Year which falls in mid-April, and would become bullish later this year, he said. more

Industry watchers expect SIBOR to dip 0.5 percentage point in 6 months

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Interbank Offered Rate or SIBOR is expected to dip a further 0.5 percentage point over the next six months. Industry watchers said this will present an opportunity for homeowners and companies to refinance loans on their properties. The US Federal Reserve recently cut its benchmark interest rate to 2.25 per cent in a bid to prop up the American economy. And this has indirectly put a drag on SIBOR - the rate at which Singapore banks lend to each other. Financial planning firm SingCapital expects SIBOR to slide by some 0.5 percentage point in the short term, from the current 1.425 per cent. Alfred Chia, CEO of SingCapital, said: "In the next 6 months we expect SIBOR rates to follow the Federal Reserve's although not at the same quantum. The current interest rates fall is to combat the sub-prime issues in the US. more

Excluding holidays, birthdays are the No. 1 everyday occasion when businesses send greeting cards to customers, according to a national consumer survey recently completed by Hallmark Business Expressions.

Combining a birthday greeting card with an offer is even more effective, with 75 percent of respondents agreeing that a card with a discount during their birthday month would make them more likely to do business with the company.

"Birthdays are a natural opportunity for businesses to reach out to their customers," said Marc Wagenheim, product marketing director for Hallmark Business Expressions. "Birthday greeting cards make a lasting impression and encourage repeat business."

Implementing a birthday greeting card program has had great results for the one retail store, Busy Bee in Springfield, Mo. more
