Brendan Nelson's spectacularly inept handling of the issue still means there is unlikely to be any such scheme in place by 2010 -- no matter how firm the Rudd Government's supposed timetable.

But the Liberals are now ready to argue they will support the introduction of an Australian scheme by 2011 or 2012 no matter what the rest of the world does.

The only question is how tough it should be. That's a pretty big and complicated question, of course.

However, it's a major retreat from the Opposition Leader's insistence of the previous few days that the introduction of any Australian scheme should be conditional on whether the other major emitters had made similar commitments. more

Corporate Crime Probes To Get New Guidelines

Filip is preparing revisions to the guidelines, known as Principles of Federal Prosecution of Business Organizations, after years of criticism from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

The groups argue that prosecutors have gone too far in their effort to police crimes on Wall Street and in corporate suites. Citing the collapse of accounting firm Arthur Andersen after it was charged with obstructing justice six years ago, business leaders say they have little choice but to yield to government demands.

In another prominent case, U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ruled that prosecutors had violated the rights of former officials at KPMG, who had been accused of marketing abusive tax shelters, by pressing the accounting firm to stop paying the employees' legal fees. more

Report: Ex-Sonics now “Thunder” Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle)

The former Seattle SuperSonics are being renamed the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to media reports.

Local television station KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City, citing an unnamed source close to the team’s ownership group, said the Sonics will be called Thunder.

The National Basketball Association team is headed to Oklahoma next season as part of a deal negotiated between the Seattle city government and the team’s Oklahoma-based ownership group.

The settlement ended an acrimonious lawsuit between the city of Seattle and the team’s owners. Under the terms of the deal, the team was granted an early exit from its KeyArena lease in exchange for $45 million with an additional $30 million under certain circumstances.
