Two Businesses Get Awards For Hiring Veterans

Two businesses are honored for hiring veterans in the Tri-Cities. Energy Northwest and Columbia Engineers and Constructors, were the two winners on Tuesday.

Both companies got awards from the Employment Security Department, at a meeting from the Richland Rotary Club.

Energy Northwest has more than two hundred veterans working for them. Columbia Engineers and Constructors has more than fifty veterans, eight of them were just hired in the last year.

The state works with many companies but they felt these two needed to be recognized for their efforts.

"What we want to do is send our national guardsmen, off on their next mission not having to worry about their employer situation," said Karen Lee, Employment Security Commissioner. more

BRITISH businesses at the top of their sector are often household names. So it’s a little odd that Boodles — the jeweller founded in 1798 and which now employs its sixth generation of the family — is less wellknown than, say, the likes of Cartier, Bulgari and Tiffany’s.

Known or not, though, things are going well for this venerable seller of sparkly stuff: in 2007, Boodles opened its shop on Bond Street, and has others including one in the Royal Exchange, Sloane Street and Harrods. This is to add to shops in Dublin, Manchester and Chester, and its head office in Liverpool.

Its turnover last year was £45m. Even with an economic downturn looming, MD Michael Wainwright is confident this success can only continue. "This is a fantastic time for jewellery in London because such a variety of things are going on," he says. more

Landings are planned in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Gibraltar, Morocco, Monaco, France, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and India.

Euro zone business activity at 2001 lows

Euro zone business activity contracted more sharply than expected in July, hitting the lowest level since just after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a key survey shows today.

The euro zone's purchasing managers' index (PMI), compiled by data and research group Markit, slid to 47.8 points in July, from 49.3 in June, according to an initial estimate.

The drop, which indicated that private sector activity in the 15-country zone was at the lowest level since November 2001, was worse than economists' expectations for a result of 48.7 points.
