Former Naples chamber leader, banker laid to rest in Oregon

Edward J. Oates Jr., who championed Naples and dedicated his life to working for its people, businesses and causes, died this week in Forest Grove, Ore., and was buried with full military honors.

He was 77.

“He was Mr. Naples — he loved his community and his family," said Sharon Bryson, Oates' daughter.

During the 44 years that Oates lived in Naples, he worked at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, several banks including First National Bank of Naples and for the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce as president and executive director.

But that was just the beginning.

According to the obituary written by his family, Oates served on 89 civic and community organizations and boards, including the David Lawrence Center, the Fine Arts Society, the Collier County and State of Florida Heart Associations, the Humane Society, Naples Kiwanis Club and Naples March of Dimes, as well as city and county boards. more

Clarke, Minghella were show-business giants

Talented show business people die every week, but there were two major losses this week.

Science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke died in Sri Lanka, while filmmaker Anthony Minghella died from surgery complications in his native England.

Clarke, who was 90, wrote the novella "The Monolith," which served as the inspiration for the 1968 science-fiction film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

That was one of the films that made a strong impression on me when I was a youngster.

Minghella was 54, and while I didn't necessarily like all of his films, they were never uninteresting. While I was less enthralled than some with his multiple Oscar-winning, 1996 adaptation of "The English Patient," I did love his 1999 adaptation of "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

And he was also one of those interviews I'll never forget. more

I am 48 year old woman living in a smallish rural town in Tennessee. I am opening a computer business, as in repair, virus removal, sell some used laptops online, and generally help people in this area. Am in school right now,and will have more credentials that every other of the 4 homegrown computer shops in the area by next spring. The vision of this business is to allow us to reach beyond the "local" restrictions brought on by the economic landslide that took place here,leaving no jobs and no way to make money, but to accommodate the locals, and annual influx of traffic all summer. With that in mind,we have adopted a two pronged approach. The shop will be at our home,albeit small building beside the house set on 5 acres one mile from a beautiful lake. We are thinking to eventually expand to be an internet/coffee drop stop for all these passers by, but have to expand the building before that can happen. This area is also a hot spot for motorcycle riders, and we tend to have fairly heavy motorcycle traffic through here most of the year (thinking this population will need to USE a computer, not just hook up to our internet) The second prong is to create a website and ebay store to sell used refurbished laptops and accessories we can pick up for a good price and resell. Open Question: Las Vegas marriage and legalities??

I'm not going to go into detail with names or anything, but here's the situation in a nutshell... I live in California and a guy I know went to Vegas in early November of last year and got married to this chick so she could have a green card. He's not inlove with her or anything, it was more of a "business deal" because of all the office work she does for him at a cheap price. Anyway, I found out she crossed the border illegally from Mexico when she was 15 or 16, she's now 27 & had never even bothered to apply for citizenship all these years!! Well, this guy owns a business & I'm worried about what could happen with this situation if the state or government found out. I also discovered that this type of marriage would be considered a "fraud" because you can't legally marry someone just to get them a green card, so therefore it would be invalid? So here's my question... he doesn't want to get in trouble, but he doesn't want to hurt this girl's feelings either. So if he got this quicky marriage in Vegas, would he have to have an annulment in Vegas, or can he get the annulment in California as well and how long would this process take considering they've only been "married" for a little over 3 months? I’m 18 years old I was raised by my grandparents from when I was two years old. My parents basically just abandon me. In short, the basis behind this is for another company outside the continental US wants to do Business inside the US over the internet, and I am going to be the in-between for which this parent company is permitted to conduct Business inside the continental US. Obviously there is allot going on here that I am not sure of. All I know for sure is, they want me to sign a contract stating that I am an independent contractor, open a bank account under the name of the newly registered company. Am an idiot or what? I was so naïve!!! I was one of the women that you hear about on t.v. and thought that my husband would never cheat on me because we love each other so much, WRONG!!! My husband cheated on me 3 times! The first time was when I was pregnant with my daughter. He went to Indianapolis with MY brother and fu**ed a stripper in a club! The second time he cheated was when I wasn’t talking to him because he was yelling and calling me names because our daughter peed on herself while visiting his father. So to get attention, he went to another strip club and drove a stripper to a nearby hotel, fu**ed her and cuddled with the stripper afterwards and he was explaining to her how he was in a sexless marriage. Take into account that I was healing from just giving birth to OUR daughter; she a month old! The third time him and his friends decided to take a weekend trip to Vegas, they went to the casino and strip club, and they wanted to make sure that after they were done partying that they had entertainment to end the night. So they hired an escort service for their entertainment. So they spent thousands of dollars on them for their midnight entertainment! Silly me, I took him back after only two days! We are currently in the process of trying to purchase a house so I decided to find out where all of the money was going so we can start saving, well load and behold not only did he cheat three times but he spent $20,000 on these females and entertainment!!! But yet he had the nerve to blame me for the reason why his business is not doing well and running out of money! I am emotionally torn and upset and confused on this situation! When I bring up how hurt I am on this issue his response is to either get a life, I’m psycho, or he’ll start calling me names like crazy b***h! When I tell him that I am in so much pain his response is: “you choose to feel that way, you don't have to feel that way.” Are you serious? If I was a female that just brushed the issue off and not cared then I would think that is a serious problem and I would doubt the love that I have for him. But instead he calls me psycho for hurting so much and bringing it up. Only 3 months has passed and I just want to feel loved again and not feel so much pain that he caused me. Ok so here's the story. I have been with my boyfriend for about 6 months and we are wanting to get married hopefully in august (i know it seems a little sudden but i really love this guy a lot) but there is a kink in our plans. when i first met him he had just gotten back from iraq (he is in the army) and is in the middle of trying to get a divorce. he married this girl about 2 years ago when she said she was pregnant, and they purchased a car together but he put it in his name since she could not be approved to have her name on the title. shortly after he got deployed to iraq , she said she had a miscarriage and that she was no longer wanted to be married to him and had apparently moved on to another poor unsuspecting solider. so anyways he worked out a deal with her that she could keep the car if she continued to make payments on it (which surprise surprise the entire time he was gone which was 4 months she didn't make one payment on the car and destroyed his credit). when he did get back from iraq me and him had met and hit it off pretty quickly and he explained his complicated situation and assured me that the divorce would be finalized next month (which would have been october we met at the end of august). he usually didn't come out and update me on the situation unless i asked so i asked him around the first of october if the divorce was done, he told me that the paper work got "screwed up" and would have to be refiled. after he told me this i kind of dropped the questions for a while but around thanksgiving time he was hinting that he was planning on asking me to marry him and giving me a ring, so naturally i asked him again if the paperwork had been filled out and turned in, he told me that it had and the divorce would be finalized that coming tuesday. of course since he had told me that it was done i started making plans for the wedding in august, my parents offered to pay for the wedding but since they were skeptical of my boyfriends past they wanted proof that he was in fact divorced before they did put any money towards a ceremony. well come to find out i see him text messaging and being rather "sneaky" about it and i ask him who he is talking to and he tells me a "friend from work". i glance over at the screen while he's not looking and i see his ex's name. i don't confront him right away because sometimes i like to think before i speak and i ask him the next day what she was messaging him about. he told me they were trying to figure out their taxes (which by the way he already done so i know that's a lie) and i say ok well let me see your phone to conform that, all his messages where magically missing. finally he fesses up that he STILL is not divorced and to "mind my own business" which of course enraged me, I mean if we're supposedly engaged wouldn't something like that be of concern to me as well? i continue to pry for answers and he tells me he intends to send in the paperwork again because before he didn't have the money to do it, which irritates me because i feel like that is not something to put on the back burner when you have plans to marry someone else. so long story short, here we are, beginning of february and it still has not been done and he has no date as to when it will be done, all he knows is he has some sort of family counseling class on the 23rd which is mandatory, but he told me he wouldn't be surprised if the divorce wasn't done in time for august and he might have to plan something for the winter. this really upset me and i cant help but get angry at him for lying to me about this whole thing and it makes me question if i am doing the right thing by marrying someone who is already being sneaky and underhanded about things when we have only been dating 6 months. Now that I'm older and working with more professional businesses I need a different email - but because I've been using my old account for so long it will be recieving emails long after I try to leave it. So this Friday I am meeting with this contracting company who has several contacts in the environmental field. I am not looking for a job, I have already accepted a position at an environmental consulting firm. I have never done an interview where I am not looking to get hired so this one is a little unique. The main purpose of this meeting is to simply network, get my name out in the work force, etc etc. I am not sure what to ask the person i will be talking to, so far all i can think to ask this person is how they got started in this business, what kind of environmental contracts they have, when they started contracting for environmental concerns.... and beyond that I am a little stumped. my previous employer lies about his location. Because of the nature of the business and the very low number of competitors, this makes his product sell better even though it is two different company names. On the second company's website (which is the one I eventually worked for) and is an all internet company, it says we are in a different location then we actually are and we are forced to lie to our customers. On top of that, if anyone asks who the owner of the company is (customer or not), we can't answer them and the call is eventually transferred to the supervisor who says she can't divulge that information, but takes their name and phone number for someone to call them back, but they never receive a call again. The owner is notified of the call and any details we have of the caller and the call never returned. Can I sue my previous employer for making me lie about these things? more

Open Question: How to search contents in XLSX files?

This is driving me around the bend. I cannot seem to search contents of xlsx files with either native Windows search or Google Desktop search. I track sales for a small business and download my customer lists - I've been just saving them in the Office 2007 default Excel format of xlsx. The problem is when I need to go back and find some data and I have a customer last name but nothing else. I used to be able to just run an advanced Windows search and it would find the entry on the spreadsheet and tell me which one. I can't get that information anymore without opening up Every. Single. Spreadsheet. and searching manfully for the text. Google Desktop is no help either. I don't remember having this problem when I used XP, but I sure have it on Vista and it's making me crazy. Do I just need to scrap the xlsx format and resave all my spreadsheets back into the old xls format? Please advise. Thanks! more

I have a good friend who runs his own small business (restaurant) and of course does all the interviewing, hiring, firing - he told me once that he could find out all the information on me any time regarding my work places, where I worked, what years I worked there, income made, financial information (liens, judgement, bk's), and of course all property owned and addresses I had over the past 20 years. I kind of figured you could get things like address info pretty easy, and also from credit reports get alot of financial data. But I doubted he could get the names, addresses of all my prior employers for my career, and income, etc. So he either ran a search on the 'net, or maybe used some background check service he utilizes for his business in hiring employees (atleast those are my best guesses on how he did it) and sure enough he emailed me not long after, and sent me all the detailed info, employers, even reasons for leaving, (resignations, terminations, etc) I was SHOCKED that all that damn info is available on all of our personal information history to every jerk out there on the internet (present company exepted of course, LOL) - Does anyone in businees know if indeed all that detailed info is easily obtainable like that on anyone, and what services or web sites provide all that detail to people (especially the employment, income stuff) ??The problem is what do you put into google to search on yourself to make it unique enough? I put my first and last name in quotes and get almost 300,000 pages returned. How do you search for just you on google, how do you make it unique for you only? ...took over a retail business for 6 months with another person (partnership, 50/50). did not work out and after 6 months the business went back to the original owner. no money was exchanged with the owner, all inventory purchased during our ownership was turned over to the original owner. we put the business in our name for 6 months, had an ein #, utilities, etc in our name, after 6 months reverted everything back to original owner. Open Question: My bank decided to close my business account. No bounced checks. No illegal activity. Why?

I have had a business account with this bank for almost a year (Ever since I opened the business.) My credit card processing gets deposited to them as does $15-20k a month in deposits/transactions. I received a letter in the mail today stating "At this time, "Bank Name" has decided to close your account because of special handling that is no longer economically feasible for us to maintain." It goes on to let me know when the effective date is, etc... I called the bank and spoke to the AVP that signed the letter. He couldn't elaborate other than to say the banks auditors made the decision. If you are in the banking business, I would like to get your response to why this might happen. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Is Murray Park owned 100% by Rangers FC?

It was formed as a seperate company to offset the cost and is entirely self funded, the company is called Rangers Youth Development Ltd - however the company is fully owned by Rangers FC. If a player comes through the ranks Rangers pay the company a fee, which goes towards the running costs of the company. Likewise if Rangers don't want to take on a youth from it, the fee goes to Murray Park from another club. Rangers invested £2.5 million in the company, and 4 other investors put in £1 million each. The training ground itself is owned wholly by the club. The company is one of a few under the ownership of the club, including the website, rangers media investments ltd (unrelated to the fans website of the same name), the retail business (now not operating, run by JJB) and financial services (again, carried out by another company).
