Business IT Guide: Sharing documents online

This extract is the first of several from the Business IT Guide to alert AccountingWEB members to the range of technology advice available from this government-sponsored site. It outlines the key benefits of sharing and collaborating on documents electronically and points the way steps to implementing a solution.

In a small business a lot of knowledge and expertise is held in the heads of key employees, and these people may be spread across the country. It's increasingly common for people to work from home and meet up every couple of weeks or so. This can present a challenge when a number of you need to work on a document in a co-ordinated way. Simply emailing documents from person to person is a one-way process that increases the number of different versions in circulation and does not support effective collaborative working. more

At Open Group: business and government face similar SOA growth pains

Public-sector organizations have a different way of life than commercial businesses, right? Having worked for both, I can say, yes, they tend to be driven by different objectives. But when it comes to SOA, things start to look awfully similar.

SOA still needs to prove its business mettle, even when there's no profit motive

I had the opportunity to attend last week's Open Group Enterprise Architecture Practitioner's conference in Chicago, and also participate in a panel discussion led by Dana Gardner and featuring Tony Baer, Eric Knorr, Andras Szakal, and David Cotteril.

Sick at Work: Paid leave is a dream for many workers, and

Rosa L. DeLauro, D-Conn., have introduced a bill, the Healthy Families Act, which would require businesses with 15 or more employees to give workers at least seven paid sick days each year.

"The public supports it," said Ruth Milkman, a professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the director of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment who has studied the proposed laws. "In San Francisco, the law was so popular that the people who were opposed to it didn't even mount a challenge. Paid sick time is a human need that is self-evident."

Kathleen Martinez, 43, is typical of the kind of worker who is most likely to lack paid sick days. The Antioch, Calif., woman works part time at two low-paying jobs, one as a pizza cook at a grocery store and another at a restaurant. more

Work Landscape Undergoes Change

28--How will the complexion of businesses change in the future if older workers stay at their desks?

Will there be more cases of age discrimination or will employers and societal views of aging people experience a metamorphosis?

"The challenge of employers today as this huge generation reaches retirement is how to keep older workers and in what capacity," said Scott Parkin, with the National Council on Aging. "Understanding the trend, will they still value the knowledge and skill of the older worker and want to keep them in some capacity?"

Parkin points to CVS Pharmacy as a "very forward-thinking" company that has developed a snowbird program that allows older workers to relocate their jobs during the year as they move north and south for the seasons. more
