Jarden Corp. Q2 2008 Earnings Call
Thirdly we have the scale and purchasing power of the Fortune-500 company and can provide added value to our niche businesses, particularly compared to smaller competitors.
Finally, our disciplined approach passing some of these cost increases in pricing, helps drive the top line and protect the overall gross margin. The third area, I would like to touch on is balance sheet conservatism. Forbes ran an article on Jarden several years ago, highlighting our business as master of the mundane.
We believe that while fiscal conservatism may be boring or mundane, it provides a solid and reliable platform on which to grow market-leading businesses. We had an excellent cash flow during the quarter, with cash flow from operations of close to $100 million, which is particularly satisfying given with the second half of the year is our strongest cash flow period. more
Clayton Cosgrove’s speech to the Canterbury Export Awards 2008
It is always encouraging to see New Zealand businesses achieving success in the global marketplace.
Last year, my colleague Trade Minister Phil Goff spoke about Export Year 2007.
As a joint initiative between the Government and the private sector, it provided an important focus on exporting and the challenges that New Zealand faces.
The work continues for both government and business to build our economy into one that can successfully compete with the rest of the world.
The passing of the New Zealand China Free Trade Agreement in Parliament last week was an important development. China is the fastest growing major economy in the world, currently growing at 9.5 percent each year. China is already our third largest trading partner. Its middle class is now estimated to be more than 100 million people and growing – which will fuel the demand for New Zealand’s exports of goods and services. more
Australian Retail Sales Fall Most in Six Years as Lending Cools
Lending to consumers and businesses rose at the slowest annual pace last month in almost six years, according to a separate report by the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Consumers are cutting discretionary spending at department stores after being buffeted by record gasoline costs, rising food prices and Steven's decision to raise the benchmark interest rate to 7.25 percent in March, the fourth increase since August last year. Stevens said earlier this month there is a ``good chance'' the economy will slow enough to bring inflation back within his target range.
``The central bank has gone too far and should consider cutting interest rates,'' said Shane Oliver, chief economist at AMP Capital Investors in Sydney. ``I think they should cut rates by September. Inflation is yesterday's story.''

My sister, age 29 (and married) is having a baby in April (it's a ways, but she wants to have a list of names already). She likes older names that aren't used a lot and I like totally unique and original names. Possibly a good team for baby namin' business, but I'd like to hear your opinions on these names before I hand my list over to her (we're close and thought because I didn't get any part in naming my other two nieces), that I can help her with him/her. The problem is, the baby isn't fond of revealing anything to the doctors quite yet, so we might be having a mix of names (girl names, I tend to have a better time with). I've also think I've fallen into the bottomless pit of naming your kid something unusual and "unique", I have some alternate spellings on some names that are kind of common now. And I know that's not doing anything to make them original, I just like my alternate way of spelling because I like the way two k's look next to each other XD Anyhow, any names that are total "no's" or any names you like in particular? ~.~.~Boy Names~.~.~ Asher Axxel Barsidious (pronounced barz-ih-DEE-us or barz-IH-dee-us, which one do you prefer or just not at all?) Dakota Everest Kodey Ryker Xanthius (pronounced ZAN-thee-us) Xavier Zakkary ~.~.~Girl's Names~.~.~ Aizlynn Ashling Autumn Kodi Nikkole Nixon Noelle Oakley Sepia Sophie/Sophi/Sophia Timber Violet So, as I said earlier, any you like in particular? Some that you wish you could just destroy and throw into a bottomless pit? Please, I'd like to know before I hand them over to my sister. Plus, if you're feeling creative, a couple middle names would be right nice, too. =) moreVoting Question: I need help trying to find out what is should... I need a new Business name!!!?

Chapter 1 Snow. It was something you didn't see often in Los Angeles, California. At least I was pretty sure that it was rare. I sighed to myself as I stared out the window towards the ocean. I hadn't lived here very long, so what could I say about the weather. I groaned as the school bell rung and I took my seat in the very center of the room. Science. It was my worst subject, in fact I was never really ever good at things like Math or Science. I was much more of a creative person, I liked to read, write, sing, play piano. I smiled when I thought of the dance class that I would be starting today. My older sister Jennifer practically had to drug me in order for me to say yes to the whole thing. I loved dancing, don't get me wrong but ever since my parents were murdered and I had moved to California to live with Jenna, things had changed and it didn't feel right, I didn't feel right about asking Jenna to pay for it, but she just smiled and promised me that it was no big deal and that she could easily afford it. Suddenly a teachers voice rung out and I was shaken from my daze. “ Good Morning! I hope everyone here has finis...” This is when I began to tune her out. Not intentionally of course but it was not like I was really trying to stay focused. I glanced out the window again to see that snow was no longer falling and the sun was peeking behind the scattered clouds. I groaned and all of the eyes in the room turned in my direction. At first I hadn't noticed how much of a disruption I had made, but before long my attention was directed in the way of the teacher. The teacher cleared her throat as she glared at me from across the room. “ Is there something the matter, Miss Marxx.” I glanced at the playboy bunny look alike and sighed deeply. “ No, Ms. Thomson, I apologize.” She nodded and turned back to the white board to write down my name underneath the Detention slot. She merely glanced at me to see if I had caught her drift and I nodded. Then she quickly erased my name and began on with her lesson. The jocks in front of me laughed as the cheerleaders to the right smirked in my direction. They giggled to one another and whispered into each others ears. I had understood what Ms. Thomson had meant, they however had not understood this piece of important information. The rest of the day passed by quickly enough and soon the last bell had rung and I dashed my way towards my locker in attempt to arrive at it before my locker mate Amanda did. Mandy was a rude, skinny, cheerleader, with long platinum blonde hair and brown eyes. I really didn't think that she was something to gawk at, but people did, all of the time. Mandy approached slowly as her boyfriend, quarter back Donny Mitchell intertwined their fingers. Instantly I felt the urge to vomit. As if that wasn't bad enough, her outfit was simply atrocious and was defiantly not something you should let a child wear in a catholic school Mandy smirked as Donny touched her butt as she leaned down to get stuff out of her locker. I cringed and glanced away as I pulled my plain black shoulder bag across my chest. “ Have fun tonight, Savanah.” I grimaced as she walked away unfazed by what she had just said. My fist tightened and I slammed my locker door causing it to make a loud bang though out the empty hallway. I closed my eyes softly and took a deep breath before I preceded to run my hands through my naturally curly red hair. My blue eyes scanned the parking lot for Jenna's 2004 Red Corvette. It wasn't there, as expected from my older sister. Jenna and her business partner Alicia ran the hottest nightclub in the west side of Los Angeles. Therefore her day pretty much consisted of sleeping until eight at night and then going to sleep at seven in the morning. It was a hectic life but Jenna should handled it well. I smiled when I thought about it. My mother had always told me that we were night owls, all three of us. My eyes saddened as I thought about my older brother Matthew. He had just disappeared the night our parents were murdered. It was odd, but in a way this was the thing that kept me living day to day. Matt hadn't died, well at least he wasn't found when the police searched the house for his body. I smiled thinly as I walked across the busy LA street. Even though it was slit, my brother could still be alive and that was the one thing I prayed for every night. “Jenna, I'm home!” I screamed as I flopped my bag in the living room. No answer. I sighed and tip toed past a sleeping Jenna so I could put my converse in my closet. Slowly I made my way into the bathroom to observe the crazy mess that I called my hair. It was curly alright, every single piece of it. I glanced at my eyes and shuttered as a chilled breeze entered the room. I set down the mirror in my hand to place my hand on the paint covered mirror that was hanging above the sink. “Jenna, why don't you just take the mirror down, instead of painting over it?” Jenna shook her hethank you for answering! :) moreVoting Question: Any ideas for new business NAME.?

However, my upbringing was not always about making sacrifices; there were other significant values that my parents taught me, including being honest, compassionate, trustworthy, and self-disciplined, to name a few. They also taught me about having respect for myself and this particular value was at the root of a recent momentous shift in my life philosophy. My brother is a Foster School of Business graduate. He visited me a few months ago and told me about all the creative things that were happening in Silicon Valley since he works at an investment firm in Palo Alto, California. I was fascinated by how high technologic comapanies tried to improve the "end user experience" by taking advantage of art and design to create amazing devices, softwares, and websites. I was immediately hooked. Since then, I have been researching and talking to my brother about various career paths and related college majors that will allow me to use art and design to participate in creating iamazing and advanced products. I had found my passion and source of momentum. The biggest obstacle now was to tell my parents that I was not going to pursue a profession in law, finance, or medicine, and that I wanted to pursue a passion in art. I was ready to take this challenge out of respect for myself. This is just a bit of an essay I wrote so it might sound confusing. :) I just wanted grammatical revisions :) moreVoting Question: Need A Creative Day for My Hair Business?

I just saw a vehicle advertising a house-cleaning service called "Dust in Time". I think that's a creative and memorable name. Do you know any others? moreResolved Question: Could some of you "elitists" out there explain this to the rest of us?
Regarding the fact that Roman Polanksi was regarded as above reproach by some due to this "exceptional talent" at moviemaking, someone posted the following answer: "liberals think if you are intelligent, creative or artistic you should be put on a pedestal" That's very true. I've noticed a number of liberals believe in what Feredrick Neitschze would call, "the rights of the exceptional"- that is, intelligence, creativity, exceptional talents render certain human lives as more valuable than others...in fact, such qualities (in the minds of some) place those individuals above reproach Interestingly, this is not only true of certain liberals (i.e, Thomas Friedman; Joe Queenan- I know Joe's a Democrat). Conservatives too (for example, H.L. Mencken, William F. Buckley, Leo Strauss, or that douche with the bow tie- what's his name?) seem to take the Neitschean perspective. As do some libertarians. There's one Southern author (a former conservative stand-up commedian) seems to believe this as well. Despite the fact that he's Southern, he thoroughly despises his less educated brethren-"hicks" he thinks of you. Then there's also that radio-host douche in Cincinatti or Cleveland (?) who was a self-described "militant right-wing Catholic"...now he he's a self-described "militant conservative libertarian" and he now despises the Church ( *shake head* LOL ) ...Oh, and do you remember that business with that Welsh or English actor who lost a fight to a couple of drunks in South Dakota? (He once bit the nose off a reporter and got away with it). I can't say his acting is anything special, but you should of heard the Brit "soccer hooligans" ranting about the fact that their hero was arrested for assault & battery (after getting caught on tape)- He's apparently the bad-boy of English soccer (I think he went around giving the opposing team bloody noses when the ref's back was turned) ;)"If you are asking if I think Roman Polanski should go to jail the answer is yes" Fair enough :) moreResolved Question: plz give a little work to your creativity... suggest a creative name for my business?
