Zim Farmers 'Chicken Out' Of Poultry Business
It is becoming increasingly difficult to run a poultry business because of the high prices of feed as well as drugs. But we are telling our members that it is cheaper to import feed from Botswana or South Africa." Nare said the bulk of the association's members are emergent farmers who have been in the business for about five years. Local stock feed producers and middlemen are selling a 50-kilogramme bag of chicken feed for an average Z$4,5 trillion.
Others are charging 280 in South African rand, 250 in Botswana pula or between US$50 and US$70 for a 50kg bag. Local producers have defended their high prices, saying their own production costs are rising as the economic climate continues to deteriorate: to ensure their own survival, they are pushing whatever costs they incur to farmers. more
Sangamo's Q2 loss widens East Bay Business Times
Sangamo BioSciences Inc.'s second-quarter losses widened to $7.4 million from $5.2 million the prior year, the company reported Wednesday.
The Richmond company brought in $2.8 million for the quarter, mainly from collaboration agreements with Dow AgroSciences and Sigma-Aldrich Corp.
In the prior-year quarter Sangamo (NASDAQ: SGMO) generated $2.6 million of revenue.
R&D expenses were $8.3 million for the second quarter of 2008, compared to $6.3 million the previous year. The company said the additional costs were used to advance Sangamo's clinical development programs in diabetic neuropathy and for its pre-IND programs to develop ZFP Therapeutics for the treatment of HIV/AIDS and glioblastoma.
General and administrative expenses were $2.5 million for the second quarter of 2008, up from $2.1 million the previous year. more
Business Column: We all crave java's jolt, but it's best to go easy
Going for a cup of coffee is as common for a first date as it is for an informal business meeting. When someone comes to your home, it's, "Can I get you a cup of coffee?" My sister-in-law, a stay-at-home mom in New York City, recently said if she didn't know how to make a pot of coffee she wouldn't have any friends.
Most of my friends grab a cup after preschool drop-off, though some diehards bring theirs in "to- go" cups from home. My 3-year-old nephew recently ordered himself an "apple juice grande with no room" — copying his mom who gets a grande coffee, filled to the brim. She doesn't mess around with milk. My husband has his first cup minutes after he opens his eyes. And I used to stop at the cart outside my office daily to get my fix. If caffeine makes us feel so good, it can't be all bad, right? Well, in addition to that wonderful jolt a shot of java can give you, it turns out there might be some real medical benefits. moreBrand's departure strictly business
Elton Brand's decision to bolt Los Angeles for Philadelphia leaves the Clippers in a mess, and delivers another blow to their forlorn fan base.
One can only imagine the anger being vented on L.A. sports talk radio and Clippers fan blogs:
"Brand disloyalty!"
"Another Carlos Boozer!"
"We got Falked!"
At first glance, it does appear that Brand (and agent David Falk) pulled a fast one on the Clips. After all, when he opted out of the last year (and $16.4 million) of his contract to become a free agent, Brand stated publicly that he intended to re-sign with the Clippers. Falk seemed to indicate his client would even take less money if it meant playing for a winning situation, citing Brand's admiration for the unselfish, veteran-laden Celtics after having attended Game 2 of the NBA Finals. more
Mixed sentiment found in business survey
A business sentiment survey has found that Irish business conditions are weakening overall, but that circumstances vary widely between sectors and even between firms.
According to the study by IIB bank and the Institute of Chartered Accountants, more than half see their business flat or improving, leading to the conclusion that the Irish economy is weakening but not in freefall.
It found that firms are still notably more upbeat about their own prospects than about the broad economic outlook.
