Babcock tips $750m profit

Infrastructure investment group Babcock & Brown is on track for $750 million in after-tax profit in 2008, the company says.

The impact of write-downs and provisions, along with the sale of wind assets, will likely result in "all growth" being created in the second half, group CEO Phil Green said.

The infrastructure fund also announced a 58% jump in after-tax profit today for 2007, even as executive chairman Jim Babcock cited the "disappointing" share price plaguing the company and its listed entities.

Speaking at the company's annual meeting in Sydney today, Mr Green said the infrastructure division was expected to drive growth in 2008, accounting for up to 65% of net revenue, up from 45% in 2007.

City, businesses need to help out Jazz and Blues festival

Just a few years ago the Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival staged events such as an informal evening at the library with Rob McConnell, leader of Canada's great Boss Brass, and outdoor movies including Chicago and The Band's Last Waltz, shown downtown. These no-charge music-related nights were staged for the community and brought people together for some fun and enjoyment on warm summer evenings. This year, other than the Saturday day-long concert at Memorial Park, the festival has morphed into an elitist series of expensive concerts. For instance, the jazz cruise, Latin Night, Jazz Divas, Swing Night and Harmonic Nights would cost an individual $200 and a couple would pay $400 before beverages and other related costs of a night out. Do the City and the organizers not realize that many people in Oshawa are -- and will be -- facing severe financial hardship and that music is one area that can boost spirits and morale if only for a relatively short time? Yes, the musical acts are costly and producing such a festival requires significant funds, but what type of support are the sponsors giving? Are more companies needed and could the current organizations on board dig a little deeper for the sake of the community? And how about the City? This group saw fit to waste close to a quarter-million dollars in the Cullen Miniature fiasco, items which are likely not worth a dime on the dollar at the moment. more
